The largest sill was for the window above the kitchen sink, so it's highly visible. Both sills were scratched prior to me picking them up. As soon as I saw the largest sill in the shop, I noticed the scratches even though the sill was covered with a lot of dust from the fabrication. The biggest scratches were two 6" parallel lines. I figured they came from the machine used to do the fabricating. I mentioned the scratches and Miza advised me to mask them with a Sharpie. He said something to the effect that no one would see the scratches. I put the sills into my car. As I was driving away I told my friend in the passenger's seat that the sills were scratched. She said she saw the biggest scratch on the kitchen sink sill right away before I mentioned it. Also, one of the dog ears on this sill wasn't squared. Before I left Affordable Granite, and before I had time to really contemplate their workmanship, I picked out another remnant because I figured I have them fabricate another sill from a different remnant. I pointed it out to Miza. He indicated that he understood, but he didn't mark the remnant with my name as was done before. I asked him if he was going to mark it, but he said he'd remember. When I texted him a week or so later with my measurements he had forgotten which remnant I wanted. He asked me to describe it. I described the remnant in a text, and then I never heard from him again.

I have worked with many contractors over the years and my experience with Spruce Box was one of the worst I have worked with for small projects, due to a lack of good project management, quality control and professionalism in addressing quality of work issues. The painting of doors was terrible (trying to use cheaper paint than agreed upon and without tinting to match existing) and remain so, even after painting of some doors three times. They sparyed doors in my garage instead of a shop ( assuring me the results were equivalent) but the painting was a disaster because the painter worked for residential developers and not high-end interiors. Why did they hire this painter for my job and why did they not fire him after his many mistakes??? The hardware installation required re-installation in several instances due to not reading instructions and or lack of experience installing hardware. Trim Paint on the exterior siding and the chimney enclosure requires a second finish coat of paint. The patio door paint is discoloring and scratches off easily - probably due to prep or number of coats of paint. Bathroom door swings open by itself. On the plus side, the crew was generally friendly, kept the house clean and corrected their work when I pointed it out to them. however, many mistakes should have been caught by them. I believe overlapping scheduling of projects led to a rushed job and was even told as much by the crew on a couple of occasions. Response to the issues during the work was minimal and required my constant attention. Now (5 months after the work) and a walk through to identify the issues, I am told by Xavier (owner) that they had barely broken even on the job financially, and would they therefore would not follow-up on the correction of mistakes or paying me to make these repairs on my own. They no longer return my calls, and have essentially ghosted me. This might happen with a bad friendship but should never happen in a business context. I WOULD NOT HIRE SPRUCE BOX NOR RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE FOR ANY PROJECT BECAUSE THEY ARE UNPROFESSIONAL, DO NOT STAND BY THEIR WORK AND THEIR HIGH PRICES ARE NOT COMMENSURATE WITH THE QUALITY OF THEIR WORK.

We contracted with Weitzer for a kitchen remodel, and everything we learned to look out for when…read moredoing our due diligence ended up being done right. Being located in SE Portland, they have experience in dealing with houses that are over 100 years old (as is ours), and Weitzer's in-house cabinet shop means that they can custom build a solution for each project. From the first day, through the finishing touches, we had a lead carpenter who was here doing most of the tasks himself or with other Weitzer employees when needed, coordinating with and directing subcontractors, and communicating with the project manager who planned the remodel and created the schedule. Communication with my wife and I, and everyone else involved in the project was first rate, and a big factor in a successful, timely remodel. After they took down the plaster on the walls and ceiling and pulled up the floor, the lead carpenter consulted with other experienced Weitzer project people to make sure everyone was in agreement on planning for what to do with the hundred year old framing that they found inside. Our peace of mind at having new wiring, plumbing, and beams, studs and joists to keep everything correctly correctly supported is a, emotionally, a huge component of this job. Based on conversations with their own employees and with subcontractors, Weitzer is a good place to work, and pays their subcontractors promptly - which is apparently not always the case in the construction world. The payoff for the customer is that the employees all seem to enjoy working together for the greater good, and skilled subcontractors are willing to be flexible with the inevitable scheduling hiccups to show up when needed and keep things moving along. Since most tasks cannot be started until a previous step is complete, Weitzer's scheduling is able to be realistic, and can be trusted. There are far more moving parts to this kind of project than I could have ever predicted myself - adjusting floor joists, rerouting wiring to fit a modern lighting plan, using the right kinds of insulation for thermal or acoustic purposes, choosing paint that will stand up to the rigors of kitchen cabinet use, laser measurement for countertops, leveling the ceiling so that crown molding in different parts of the room does not interfere with cabinet doors opening and closing, matching window and door trim to other parts of the house - Weitzer's team coped with it all, and were not fazed by any of the things that could not be known until the old walls and ceiling came down. This kind of job is not cheap - but Weitzer's bid was right in line with other design-build firms that we contacted, and in watching the project as it went along, I developed an appreciation for all the components of the budget, and how they added up to the total cost, and contributed to a successful project.

I am a School Counselor at the highest poverty, elementary school in Gresham. We are a very busy, high-needs school. I love my job but have been struggling organizationally with it as I have been working in a small room with piles of office supplies, therapeutic tools, paperwork, clothes, shoes and games stacked high. It was a chaotic environment where I could never find anything when I needed it, and kids were always tripping over things. It was stressful and I often found myself dreaming about "if only I had shelves....." Then Kitchen Concepts came into my world. Dave heard my plea of desperation. He came out to my place of work and saw the need. He measured and designed a beautiful plan that included many shelves, drawers, two desks and all the storage I need to succeed. And the best news? He told me he wanted to donate all the materials and the labor. This undoubtedly would have costs thousands of dollars but he decided to donate everything as he saw the real need of a local school. Dave told me that due to ongoing projects, he and his right-hand man John may not be able to complete all the finishes, minor details and fine-tuning of this project due to time constrictions. I totally understood. John and Dave (two of the kindest and most genuine guys you will ever meet) came down to my school to install the cabinets and literally didn't take a single break. They worked like crazy for HOURS and did every every sort of finish, minor detail, fine-tuning and touch-up possible. The outcome was (and is) absolutely stunning. Immediately the quality of my work with kiddos has improved due to the beautiful welcoming space, the ability to find things when I need them and a calming feeling for students as opposed to a chaotic one. I highly suggest this wonderful family-owned business to anyone and everyone out there. They care about our community, give to our kids, work hard, are generous, kind and create a beautiful product! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Kitchen Concepts for being the incredible business that you are. You make a difference. To anyone looking for a quality product, please chose Kitchen Concepts.
