Liebling is my favorite clothing shop in Burlington. I don't have many pieces from the shop…read morebecause the clothing isn't exactly Vermont-esque and it can be expensive. That being said, if I were still living in a city, I would dress from head to toe in Liebling-style garb. Vermonter Kara Alnasrawi opened Liebling a few years ago. Kara is an ex investment banker who met her husband in Germany (thus the name of the shop). She saw a gap in women's fashion offerings in Burlington and decided to open a clothing shop with items she would wear. I'm so glad she did, because I share her taste in fashion. The brands Liebling carries have clean, simple lines, are made of high-end materials and indeed offer "casual luxury" like it states on the store's website. Sweaters are cashmere, denim is Japanese, shirts are made of silk or fine brushed cotton. The cut of the clothing is flattering but understated. I'm a big fan. Still, in a state where 90% of the inhabitants shop at TJ Maxx and similar bargain stores, I wonder how this shop stays afloat. Regardless, I'm so glad it's here to remind me of other places and lifestyles. Designers include Helmut Lang, Rag & Bone, ALC, Raquel Allegra, Mother Denim, NSF, Goldsign, Inhabit, etc. And the store is now carrying Isabel Borland Jewelry. I went to college with Isabel and I love her aesthetic!!!! I'm so pleased Liebling is carrying her. Her jewelry complements the clothing perfectly. The few other women's shops in town that compare to Lieblling are Monelle (Nantucket-style clothing, lots of whites and navies, stripes, nautical cuts, cotton, linens, and some fancy dresses. Casual elegance); Whim (a bit more trendy, less classic than Monelle, less luxurious than Liebling. More in lines with Ecco); Ecco (trendy mid-range brands) and Jess Boutique (hard to describe, more flowy and mature with prints, not my bag but a lot of people love this shop). The only men's shop that is comparable in the Burlington area is Michael Kehoe. Burlington isn't exactly the fashion capital of the northeast. ;)

No greeting, no interest in me as a customer whatsoever. I wasn't alone. Another woman about my age had to chase down a sales person to help her find a sweater in the color she wanted. We looked at each other as what appeared to be the manager fawned over one woman trying on dresses for a wedding, and the other devoted her attention to their "favorite customer" who had come in after we had. I finally said to the other ignored customer, "I must look like I'm not here to buy clothing." I was looking forward to getting some help putting together a wardrobe, and trying things on after a year of online shopping. It's not that hard to get Halston. I'll stick with online - the customer service is better.

Focusing mostly on women's apparel, this store also has a section for menswear and children's clothing and there is even a pretty large selection of home items. If there are people with you who are bored with shopping, they can sit down on the main floor and visit with the birds that live in the store. The clearance center has some good deals and there are often items on sale on the main floor, but the real deals are found in the basement. I've seen items priced as low as $20, and there are usually racks of clothing that are 40% off. Most recently, I found some very pretty items that will be put away for future gift giving. The price points for the clothes are mostly on the lower end, but they do have a few moderately priced pieces. The price ranges for shoes vary from low to high end for things like Coclico shoes. Nice selection, spacious store, and obviously an ideal location...but for boutique prices, the…read morestaff should be a little more knowledgeable/helpful. I bought a dress here that seemed flattering even though the straps were way too long. Of course, the girls working that day all assured me it looked gorgeous and would be an easy fix. They recommended a few tailors in the area and suggested I could even try making the adjustments myself, even though I'm not much of a seamstress. Later I went online just to comparison shop (turns out the dress is available elsewhere for cheaper, but not in my size) and in the process realized that I was wearing it entirely wrong...it does a kind of funky wrap thing, which explains the 10" of leftover fabric. If a store is going to charge hundreds of dollars for a dress, shouldn't someone working there know how to display it and help others try it on, or at least pause before recommending hacking the thing to pieces? It seems like they're just on auto-pilot to say "yea, yea, looks great" but don't really know anything about clothes. Which is to be expected at, like, H&M...but not someplace charging these prices!
