We had a appointment on December 19, 2021 to get our pictures with Santa. When we arrived the staff was really rude. We were there at 10a for our appointment at 1010a. The staff were talking to each other giggling and messing around. When they finally acknowledged us they said "do you need something " in a very unprofessional tone. We told them we were here for our appointment and they said "we're sorry but Santa has a event at 1030a so we would need to wait.. " Our appointment was at 1010. I was there early so what does my appointment have to do with his event 20 minutes after my appointment?Please have an adult with experience that can be supportive to the staff, with giving some suggestion on what they should be doing.. read more

We love that we can view our photos right away and make our selections on the spot. Our pictures come out great every time! I'm going with a 3 star to be fair. Trying to make an appointment for my Senior was quite difficult. We called at least 5 times over a period of 3 weeks, and the phone rang......we'd leave a message each time. With no call back :/ So of course we tried to go through the website, and also emailed studio directly. No reply, not even an automated one. So.... we kept trying....and FINALLY I GOT A HUMAN!! Yaay!! I mean relieved ! I was so excited I made an appointment first crack, and didn't realize it was on a day I had 3 dr appt, in Kailua, Ewa, waimanalo and now throw in a trip to pearlridge !!! We got there and checked in. Filled out a short sign in. And got right into our shoot. I love Jon. (I think that's his name) he suggested poses, cuz we're clueless. And they made my son look so handsome He suggested backgrounds that matched outfits, and poses we never thought of. Ok another reason for the low score. I question the owner's integrity when it comes to getting a refund for canceling a gig. Been trying to get in touch with John for over two going on three months now for my refund. John has been dodging me ever since. When I get in touch with his staff to talk to the person in charge, he suddenly stepped out of the studio. Two stars for the service at Kahala Mall Easter bunny today. The guy during Christmas... the adults who did the photos were way better. They have literal teenagers running it today and disorganized would be an understatement. We had an appointment for 11:50 which was not honored. They let walk ins, half a dozen of them go before us even though we had an appointment set for over a week and a half. Why bother having an appointment? Would give it one star but I'm giving an extra star because the man who did the photos during Christmas was good. This Easter photo sesh is a mess though. read more

We had an appointment yesterday, Dec 17 for 5:45pm - Kamakana Alii location . The rain was pretty bad and I'm so sure they know that. I tried calling them before my appointment that we were at the parking lot and there is no way of getting out of the car. I called the number (the only number) for million times. I also left a message, but no one got back to me this morning. I mean where was the courtesy to call me to see if I was going to keep the appointment with the bad weather? As soon as we got to the location, the door is close, of course........ Great!!! Hmm @ 6pm? As far as I can remember, the place doesn't close at 6pm because when I made our appointment there was later time slots. But whatever. The fact that we got ready for nothing. The struggle of trying to call them and to get my kids out of the car while it's raining is very disappointing to see a door shut. I spoke to Daryl today from the Pearl Ridge location, thanks to him that he was able to reschedule us for another day. CROSSING FINGERS! I better not see any door shut again. We were there for the collaboration photo session with Masaki Formals and had my sons dressed in kimonos. They were so excited to take pictures with a sword. LOL ‍ I was really worried about my son taking photos and the time allotted since it was only a 15 minutes session. My youngest has autism, and I was worried how he'd react to the situation that day. He had his challenges that morning, but the photographer and the assistant was so helpful and most of all extremely patient with him. I am so happy with the photos that were taken. Very disappointing. Came in several weeks ago to take passport photos (time sensitive). They said come back in two days cuz they have to send out. Came back two days later. No customer service; bottom line; no photos yet; "did we call you?" No; but I was told to come I. Two days. "Well no one called you cuz it's not ready it takes at least one week!" Come back two weeks later. No photos. @dud we call you?" No but I figured it's only passport photos so two weeks should be sufficient time to produce. Very irritated. Took my son to see Santa yesterday and although he wasn't having it, I must admit that Santa was amazing and very patient with him thru all his crying and screaming lol the staff was very awesome and patient as well. We met Sarah at a baby expo at the Blaisdell. She was great. She was very warm and friendly, and we won a free metallic print from Newborn Studio, so of course we wanted to get photos done so we could collect our free gift. The appointment went great. Sarah was very patient. Our daughter did okay, but needed a few breaks. The photos also came out pretty good too. However, we asked about the free print, they said they would work on it, and we never heard back. I have tried contacting them several times, and have never heard back. I think that is very poor customer service and lying to get customers is just terrible. read more

Our school was in dire need of a new photography house. We had already entertained two studios and Jonathan Bello, owner, contacted me from a recommendation from one of our staff. There are several reasons why we are very pleased with Expressions, and it began with our initial contact with Mr. Bello. 1) His jovial and friendly manner had our faculty feeling the aloha. We weren't just a number to Expressions. And as we began setting up our senior portraits dates, the novel coronavirus happened. 2) He was able to accommodate our concerns and opened up the studio to come to our campus as an additional safety measure. 3) While on campus, Expressions expert team of photographer Darryl and touch up artist Jo provided our girls with the same friendliness we had from the get go, and also their professionalism with every appointment from faculty and staff to student. 4) the quality of photos are amazing! They are not rushed and the photographer is an actual photographer who knows about lighting, movement, aesthetic. We've had issues with past photographers rushing our families. 5) The families get to look at their photos and choose which one is featured in the yearbook. The kids are happy with this. I'd like to update my review, and give the venue another star. The owner did reach out to me to apologize for my experience. The fact that he takes into consideration all criticism (even the lowly yelpers), and cares enough to try and make things right, I believe that's deserving of coming back to fix my rating. ***Update***^^^ Brought my daughter to take pics, and there wasn't many bgs to choose from. She's just a toddler and there were 0 props/toys to try to get her to smile or anything. Although the photographer was very nice, he didn't seem to know how to deal with kids who didn't want to be photographed. We had booked for what I assumed would be an hour slot in the afternoon (of course it was finished much faster than that since my daughter didn't want to sit nicely). We sat waiting for a long time after to see & pick our photos. Another 2 families had finished being photographed before a girl came to help us in the front. The girl wasn't friendly at all and dressed unprofessionally (jeans/tank top shirt that you could see her bandeau sticking out from every angle). She asked "You know about the birthday club, right?" To which I responded no. She went to grab information but then said they were out. Pulled up the pics, then later came and asked me for the numbers of the pics. I said I didn't know exactly what numbers (was not informed in the beginning that I would have to tell her the numbers) but I'd point them out on the screen. I tell her which package I want, and she asks what sizes for the pages. I ask what sizes there were since there was nothing I had that explained what was on 1 sheet. She comes back with samples of the sizes but was unsure about how many were on a sheet. At this point I felt like she was irritated that I had so many questions about what I was going to be getting. I was irritated that it sounded like she was guessing. The pics came out okay but didn't come until days after the date on the receipt said it would. I was told that it was senior portrait season so they were busy and backed up. Which was fine, you get what you pay for. It seemed like they were just trying to get everyone in and out as soon as possible. The rest of the staff seemed nice. The couple people that I talked to that seemed to be more knowledgeable, were very helpful with my questions. All together though, my experience was not great. Maybe because they only recently moved to this location and then were bombarded with senior portraits, things seemed out of place. Who knows. read more

This is an account of how a great portrait studio lost my business due to its chaotic business practices. Some background first: I have been getting family and holiday portraits done with Expressions Portrait Design since my son was an infant. In fact, I was very pleased with my November 2015 family portraits (see related review). Another set of family portraits taken in April 2016 were also amazing, and I love them. Today, however, I have made the decision not to do business with Expressions for the foreseeable future. This is why. I had been an existing member of the birthday club and wanted to make another birthday club appointment for my son, who turned 4 this month. The birthday club promotion was excellent: every year, during your child's birth month, your child could get a free 8x10 photo. On July 11, 2017, I tried calling Expressions, hoping to reach their Windward Mall location. I could not. That prompted me to leave a wall post on Expressions' Facebook page asking about the birthday club (and asking about why I could not reach the Windward location). There was no response. A few days later, I coincidentally received an email from Expressions inviting me to join their birthday club. I called Expressions and explained that I was already a birthday club member and wanted to schedule a portrait session. i found out then that the Windward Mall location was closed. The person I spoke to (male) told me that the birthday club now costs $100, but that fee was good through the child's 13th birthday. He said that since I was already an existing birthday club member, however, I could come in this one last time for a free 8x10 photo. The $100 fee would be charged next year if I came in, according to him. I thought that was a great demonstration of business goodwill and happily agreed to book my son's session for today, July 24, 2017. The person on the other line located my account and booked me. A few days later, another employee (female) called to confirm our session. My husband showed up today with my 4-year-old son. The person greeting them asked if they were there for a senior portrait. Huh? No, birthday club session, please. Then that person said there was no session booked. I then walked in and joined my husband and son. The person then asked us if we were there for a family photo shoot. Huh? No, still the same-- birthday club session, please. A very sweet employee there told me that the cost today would be $100. I told him that someone on the phone told me it would be free and that I would have to pay $100 next year. He went to the back of the studio, I'm guessing to talk to a manager. He then returned and said the cost would be $15, but that I'd have to pay $100 next year. I tentatively agreed. Then I asked him about what benefits would come with my Expressions membership card and my Five Star App as a result of this session, and he could not answer any questions. He told me Expressions' policies and prices were still being hammered out. At this point, I started feeling that getting a birthday club portrait done today would be a waste. A few minutes later, the employee returned to say that there would be a watermark on the $15 8x10 and that if I wanted a clean portrait, I'd have to pay the $100 this year. By this point, I wasn't mad, but I had just heard enough. The "free portrait" that was the basis of my entire trip to Expressions had turned into a $15 portrait, which had turned into a $115 portrait. No thank you. It was so easy to walk away. When I told the employee I was not going to do a birthday club session today and was likely not going to in the future, he was apologetic. None of this was his fault, though, and I felt bad for him. I don't know exactly what is going on with Expressions right now. But until they figure out what they're doing, this once-loyal customer will not be back. read more

My childrens school chose to use Expressions Portraits for school pictures this year and we are very disspointed with the quality of pictures, the lack of communication, and a problem about returning money not being handled correctly. One of our sons missed Fall pictures due to his class being quarantined but was able to be there for make up day only they were not allowing cash payment anymore and to pay with a credit card you now needed to pay a fee. I called and left a message to order my sons pictures and they never called me back and therefore we missed the deadline to purchase his pictures. Spring picture day rolls around and this time I paid ahead of time to ensure getting both of my kids' pictures only for the same childs class to be out for quarantine once again. I called to get my money back and they still have not refunded after speaking with their staff multiple times over the last 2 months. We did receive one picture for the child who was there and to say the quality was poor is an understandment. Still have not received a refund for the child who missed. Very dissappointed! read more

Overall just unprofessional. I took my senior portraits at a pop up shop at my school. They gave me a flyer that said they would be emailed to me within 9 days. It took them 17 days. I called several times, they said they would get back to me, but they never did- ever! After probably my 6th or 7th call I finally received an email of my photographs and they were all poorly edited! I took them in front of a green screen and you could literally see the green through my hair. If you aren't required to use expressions for photographs, I would go somewhere else. read more

First of all I ordered my son's school portrait in late September. I didn't receive them until November at which time I had to again follow up because they didn't give me all of what was ordered. I left messages but still haven't received the missing picture to date (January). Now the telephone voice message makes you run around in circle, ie press 1 if missing something. Then when you press 1 it takes you back to the main message etc. Very unhappy with quality of picture too. It is like a home printer quality. read more

This review is for photos with the Easter Bunny (2019) on the Sears/Downtown side (what's with the new names? Hehe). First off, I made reservations and paid online. When we get there, there is only one line--there isn't a separate line for reservations. Hmmm, that's interesting. My husband went to the front to ask where the reservations line is at but that employee didn't know anything about reservations. The same employee came down the line passing out order forms and I informed him that we didn't need one b/c we paid online. He didn't know anything about that. As we got closer to the bunny, the same employee said that his co-workers didn't know anything about online reservations or payment. WTH. Who did I give my $45 to?! I double check my email confirmation and bank account. Ok, Expressions Hawaii. After taking the photos, I tell the employee helping with photos at the computer that I paid online. She said ok, helped us with our photos and told us to stay right next to her computer so she can just hand our photos to us instead of going to pay the cashier next to her. So, she knew about the online reservations/payments and the others didn't? I guess if Expressions will be handling next year's photos, they need to lock their systems/procedures in place and communicate with the employees about what services they have/don't have. And a separate reservation line like the previous years help! No use having them if you're not gonna use it. read more

Customer service here is very poor. Photographer is not very friendly nor professional as we thought it should be. It's our first time here for our daughter one year old picture. The photographer is clueless she doesn't know what she were doing, she doesn't have the setup or suggested how we should pose. All she does is just take the picture, she have no suggestion at all. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED! had a Santa photo taken on 12/24/2018 at Kahala Mall. We purchased prints and the photo CD. The customer service wasn't very good to begin with, considering they weren't busy and it was during the holiday season...besides...they had Santa! I was going to purchase more photos but it was CASH ONLY! We didn't get a chance to look at the photo CD until a few days later and it was the WRONG PHOTO! I immediately called them but since it was cash only, they didn't have any records. Thankfully, I had taken one from my phone and told them the date and time. Kimberly was nice and took down all the info. No one called me so I called a week later. Spoke with Aiyana and she had me send her the photo so she can find the photo since I provided her the date and time from my phone. I even called to make sure she got the correct info. I also sent her the wrong photo to compare. Another week has passed and no phone call. No email or phone call from them. I finally called again and per Aiyana, the manager, they're still trying to get find my photo AND take care of other problems! OMG...how much more do I need to provide you? I gave you the location, date, time AND what the photo should look like! At this point in time, where shall I send the Santa photo to? It's almost a month later?! I am definitely NOT ORDERING next year if they're in charge of the kahala mall Santa again. I may just be that person to have the child sit on Santa's lap and take photos on my own. In fact, I may just use the one from my phone! But I paid $10-$20 for a photo CD that I was supposed to take with me. Definitely disorganized place that needs to get organized if I am not the only one that got screwed. Update: it's almost a month later and they were still trying to find the photo. Finally i get an email from Aiyana and needed my mailing address to send me another photo CD. At this point, I just want to get this over and done! I asked for a reimbursement. Instead of mailing me a check, I HAVE TO PICK UP MY REIMBURSEMENT! What kind of company is that? They can't send me a damn cashier's check or some other payment? I have to spend more money on gas AND time to get my reimbursement of $20-$30?! Really?! I AM NOT RECOMMENDING this place to anyone unless they get their act together and make some changes. read more

We've been working with Expressions for the better part of 5 years and it's their outstanding customer service & true kindness that keeps us coming back. We love all of their Christmas and Easter Bunny photo ops -- we have made it our annual tradition to dress up and go to Kahala Mall for these and I have always loved that Expressions is innovative to evolve with the everchanging landscape of both technology and health concerns. Seeing their plexi-glass adaptations for the newest season of photos was a relief -- a new norm for these kinds of photos. We also felt reassured seeing staff disinfect the whole bench before my kids sat down to take their pics with Santa last year. Booking appts online is such a great leverage of technology - makes my life so much easier and efficient! For my son's newborn pics, we worked with Expression's newborn photographer at their studio on the West side and it was a pleasant experience for my husband and I. We loved that she worked with us to assure we could include our personal elements of our favorite sports team and props. It was comfortable, efficient, and affordable. To continue the tradition, we worked with the owner, Jon, for my son's first year birthday photos. My normally super smiley son is difficult to photograph because he's painfully shy and literally shuts down in front of the camera lens. Not discouraged at all, Jon pulled out all the stops. He brought out every prop, every toy, every whimsical noise, every bribe -- my son remained stoic and gave us a few pouty faced pics. Even though the issue was my son and not Jon, he still felt so badly that we didn't get happy boy pics! He felt like he let us down, but really it was my own stubborn boy. We accepted my son's stone cold face as his authentic self, and those were the pics we used at his party and remain on our walls at home years later. When we recently heard that our favorite Masako Formals kimono company (we are longtime loyal customers of Masako Formals) was doing a collab with Expressions, we had to jump at the chance to support Expressions again! Booking was a breeze on the Web site. I had a last minute request to change our appointment that they were able to accommodate on the same day which was amazing. Every reception staff and photography staff were just on point. Super encouraging for my daughter and very organized during a visually chaotic day with lots of moving bodies. They were effectively running the kimono pics and the Easter bunny pics with a good amount of staff, and there was a lot of communication to me as far as what to expect with different wait times during the process. They had a great system for touchscreen navigation of picture selection, and I really liked the "green" method of using a dry erase marker to jot notes for pictures that we wanted to order. Everything was very clean and I appreciated the attention to pandemic precautions. I saw hand sanitizer and wipes readily available all throughout the studio, and all the staff were wearing masks +/- face shield which was great. My daughter and I had a great "mommy & me date" spent at Expressions and we are so happy to have some special photos taken as keepsakes. Photos are so affordable here. You can leave with great quality photos taken at an affordable price at a comfortable pace. They have different packages for every budget, and you're often able to leave with the prints on the same day. Looking forward to doing our Easter bunny 2021 pics this weekend! read more

We have been going to this company for many years for Easter, Christmas, and family photos, and the service has always been exemplary. I reviewed the other postings before starting this, and observed some with negative feedback. What I can say is that no company is perfect, and there will always be unsatisfied customers. What makes Expressions special is their willingness to go above and beyond to remedy any issues, and the outstanding everyday customer service. Our photographers have always been very patient and kind with my young daughter, and have gotten smiles out of her for all of our pictures (not an easy task). One time we had an appointment set during the Christmas season, and somehow things got mixed up and it didn't pan out. The owner (Jon) immediately came down to the store from the Santa Pen, and spoke to us personally. (The other employee Bryce was awesome as well) I'm not going to go into details on what was done to fix the problem, but my wife and I were more than satisfied, and left happy at the end of the day. He basically utilized his own personal time to get things taken care of. I would wholeheartedly recommend this company and the employees to anyone wanting a professional photoshoot/ Xmas/Santa photos.. A+ read more

The whole experience was just not what I expected it to be. From the moment we got there I just had a feeling it was not going to go well. Earlier that morning I called to make an appointment for a family portrait... There were 6 adults, my baby boy and our doggie. The guy sounded very professional and excited that we were coming in for a photo session so I thought it would go well. From the start up there was only one person working there... as the cashier, the photographer and everything else. We choose the 5 pose package and was expecting greatness for a $250 package. She wasn't the best of anything, here are some reasons to back up my argument -same generic poses -not personable, very shy -told her to call my dogs name to get his attention, nope all she did was wait for him to look her way... at the very end she finally found a toy to get his attention -didn't direct us to stand straight, lift our heads up, stand closer, etc... Seriously I wasn't shocked when we got to see the proofs. What did shock me was that in our photos you could see everything... the different backgrounds, the lights, the poles, the floor and everything else. Not one photo was perfection. Luckily another lady was there to help us and I complained to her. She talked to her manager and reassured us that they will fix the 5 photos that we choose by stretching the backgrounds so it won't show 3-4 different backgrounds. Problem solved right, WRONG! That same day their lab emailed us a proof of a edited photo and needed our approval. So we called and gave the OK... however that sales person forgot to tell that lab technician because we get a call a week later asking us the same question. Seriously that is already more than 3 strikes... We were already fed up with everything so we decided to talk to the manager and explain the service we got wasn't acceptable. He offered us a free sheet with our package but then agreed with a discount instead. So we had to wait a bit longer for our photos and when I got there to pick them up I mentioned that the manager was giving us a discount. You think they would have notes in our profile... hmm guess again! So the sales lady did not want to refund us the discount until she got an OK from her manager. I waited at their studio for a good 20 minutes then I finally gave in and said to call me when they are ready. So half an hour later we get a call and they would refund us the discount but we had to go back to get the refund. You can tell my frustration level is reached beyond its peak. I was just so excited for this place and it was just not what I was expecting it to be. This place needs a serious makeover on their staff and their policies. This place is awful. We paid $500 to have 1 hour family Christmas photo shoot. We walked away with ~50 photos and they are all awful. The photographer did NOT give any direction or posing during the shoot, we were rushed in and rushed out. The wait to get our package was super long. Came here for holiday photos and am glad we did! Was hesitant not knowing how they would come out, but Shelby was a great photographer and captured great shots to use for our Xmas card. It was a great deal for getting prints and a CD of the pics so you can print your own. She also did a really good job with our toddler, he was smiling so nicely in the pics and we never would've gotten those kind of shots trying to take our own. Super professional and fun. We had a big family portrait with 8 adults and 6 young kids. Our photographer Daryl was very easy to work with and really good. They obviously had experience with kids because they knew exactly how to wrangle them together and get them to focus for the pictures(which I thought was gonna be impossible). They offer good value with many different options to choose from. What I thought was gonna be a difficult and tiring experience turned out to be kind of fun. Probably not ever using them again. We got there and it took a while for them to serve us and set up the background. Then when the photoshop it started they seemed to not know how to pose us and engage us. In the end I felt like I ended up commanding the shoot- thank goodness I have a background in photography and know what I like. They are good for simple and static. If you want more dynamic, fun and creative maybe try and book and out of studio session. What I figured would take a little over and hour took almost two hours. We were starved and ready to run out the door at the end. I'm hoping they don't mess up on the order- they had someone in there complaining about that as we waited after the shot to choose our photos. read more

Expressions studios Pearlridge downtown was very good to me. You can be assured that they care about their customers and about the quality of services they provide to you. I was disappointed with our very first session and didn't purchase any portraits. A few days later, I received a follow up call from Heather, the manager at Expressions studios. She was very understanding and open to hearing about my experience and feedback. She took it upon herself to make things right and offered me a reshoot with a free package deal. She reassured me that she cares about their customers and wanted to give each and every one the best photography services that they could get. On my reshoot, I worked with Shelby in photographing my 3 month old. A difficult task. But Shelby was very polite, professional and patient. She offered different backgrounds, settings, and props and even let me feed my son in the middle of the session when he got fussy. The photos came out great! I totally recommend this place. They really do care and are willing to work with you if things don't turn out exactly the way you'd like.
