I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience at Neiman Marcus. What was supposed to be a…read morespecial birthday gift from a friend turned into an unnecessarily frustrating and unpleasant experience from beginning to end.
First, my order was canceled TWICE. When I placed the order for the third time, I was assured that the perfume was available in-store and that I could pick it up that same day. However, after placing the order and waiting for my confirmation email, I discovered that the perfume would not actually be available until October 7 because it was not in stock at the store.
When I called customer service, the representative advised me to make sure my name was listed on the order to avoid any issues at pickup.
Unfortunately, the experience only got worse when I arrived.
The associate at the pickup counter asked for my ID and order number. As I was pulling up the information on my phone, she suddenly turned away to assist another customer without saying a word or even asking me to wait.
When I told her I had the information ready, she responded, "Okay," but it wasn't clear whether she was assisting me or the other customer. When I asked, "Are you helping me?" her response was, "I can help both of you at the same time."
I found this response extremely unprofessional and dismissive. Every customer deserves proper attention and basic courtesy, especially at a store that prides itself on providing a luxury shopping experience.
The situation became even more frustrating when she couldn't locate my order under my name. I provided my friend's name, since he had purchased the perfume as a birthday gift, and she was finally able to locate the package. However, she refused to release it because my name was not listed as the purchaser and insisted that I needed to show the purchaser's ID.
I completely understand that stores have security policies and procedures, and I respect that. My issue was not with the policy itself, but with the way the entire situation was handled.
I tried contacting my friend, but he was unavailable at that moment. When I explained that I would return later and asked for my ID back, the associate responded, "It's not my fault," and suggested canceling the order so I could purchase it again.
Seriously? After two previous cancellations and three attempts to purchase the same item, her solution was to cancel it AGAIN and start over for a fourth time?
I explained that this was not an acceptable solution.
Only then did she finally contact a manager. After explaining the situation, the manager pointed out that the purchase had been made through my Neiman Marcus account. I confirmed this and showed that I had access to my account and the order confirmation emails.
The manager instructed the associate to release the perfume. However, even after receiving that instruction, the associate continued questioning the decision, stating that I was not the person whose credit card had been used.
The manager had to instruct her a second time to release the item.
Eventually, I received my perfume and left.
To make matters worse, the condition and presentation of the shopping bag were equally disappointing, as you can see in the attached photo. After everything I had already experienced, even the final presentation lacked the care and attention to detail one would expect from a luxury retailer.
I want to be very clear: I am not asking Neiman Marcus to disregard its policies. I am asking for professionalism, respectful communication, consistency, and reasonable problem-solving.
There is a significant difference between enforcing a policy and making a customer feel dismissed, inconvenienced, and unwelcome.
Neiman Marcus is a luxury retailer, and customers should be able to expect a level of service that reflects that reputation. Unfortunately, this particular location fell far below those expectations.
What should have been a joyful experience picking up a birthday gift became an exhausting and unnecessarily complicated process.
Luxury is not just about the products you sell or the prices you charge. It is also about how you treat your customers.
I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously and provides additional customer service training to ensure other customers do not have to go through a similar experience.
