They have exotic brands from around the world along with rare and older brands that the big box grocery stores don't carry. I don't know how they do it, but the quality and freshness of the vegetables and perishables are top notch given such variety. We used to shop at Whole Foods in Monterey, and we like the small specialty shops like Elroy's in Monterey and Jerome's Carmel Valley Market, but Star Market is a combination of both worlds. Whole Foods has gotten corporate with an overemphasis on their own brands. Star Market doesn't really have their brand so they are extremely loyal to local brands which makes the shopping experience feel like a tour of Monterey County highlights. I also like the very practical way they're running their business. Few frills, very clean, and high quality. In fact, it feels very nostalgic to walk in, like a movie set from the 1970's which makes me feel that this is still a family owned and run business. If you're looking for a truly unique experience that is different from the Albertsons/Lucky/Safeway/Nob Hill sameness, then you have to do yourself a favor and visit Star Market. They taste exactly like the chicken nuggets at McDonald's. I got the10 piece for $4.99 which to me was a great deal. The nuggets were fluffy, crispy, had a perfect amount of crunch in its skin, tender and hot when I ate them. I will definitely try them with their $9 lunch combo meal, and for that price it's unbeatable. They always have what we're looking for with very reasonable prices. From packages food, to fresh produce, to paper goods. This S&F has always served us well. I will say staff can sometimes be hard to find outside of the checkout area. So if you are having some trouble finding an item, you might be on your own. But when you do interact with staff, they are friendly and helpful. I just wish there were more of them working the aisles. Parking lot is a bit iffy. It's busy and people often park really poorly either taking up 2 spots or parking so off to the side that you'll have trouble getting in/out of your car. But honestly, this Smart & Final is a great resource for your bulk item needs. Especially if you come early in the morning. You can often easily get in, grab everything you need, and get out much quicker than you could at other bulk item stores (you know what one I'm talking about).
