My previous go-to mechanic tripped me with a quote of $575 for the valve gasket cover replacement (I assumed they meant the entire thing, not the rubber seal). So I went to this place due to reasonable prices. Their labor prices are also more competitive. The only downsize is that they don't do appointment. Otherwise; so far so good.

I used to come here regularly when it was under the previous management because they were always…read morequick, honest, and fairly priced. Unfortunately, that has completely changed. I brought my 2019 VW Atlas in for a simple oil change before leaving on a road trip and was charged $166. Before the service, I was told it would be somewhere around $160-$166, and, conveniently, it ended up being the highest quoted price. Then I was told I was getting a "discount" because it was supposedly going to be over $170. That didn't feel like a discount--it felt like a sales tactic to make an already overpriced oil change seem reasonable. This is now the second time I've been here since the change in management, with two different vehicles, and both times I heard the same explanation: "We're under new management, so prices are a little higher." A little higher? That's a huge understatement. I would have left if I wasn't pressed for time but I went ahead and bit the bullet and that ruined the rest of my day knowing I got cheated. Afterward, I compared prices with other local shops and found that the same service was available for significantly less. Had I known that beforehand, I never would have agreed to pay $166 for a routine oil change. It's disappointing to see what used to be a trustworthy, fairly priced shop turn into a place that seems focused on charging as much as possible. If you're considering coming here, ask for the total price before they begin any work and compare it with a few other local shops first. You may end up saving yourself a lot of money. On a side note, like I said...Afterward, I called a few local shops and found quotes ranging from about $90 to $120 for the same service, making the $166 charge here even harder to justify.

(Anthony is great too, btw!) For reference- I drive from Seal Beach cuz I trust and love this place so much! They are honest and show you all their work. They always show me exactly what the problem is before fixing it, and make recommendations (with prices) and how urgent the work is or isn't. They do my oil changes at an unprecedented speed and even my brand new tires were done quite fast. I have a Subaru and they've never had a problem with my parts. The only thing I had to order were my tires (I use special S&Ms)... and they only needed one day. I have referred others that have Toyota and Kia, and they have no complaints. The prices are more than fair.. sometimes I feel like maybe I'm robbing them!! My neighbor that I referred was quoted engine work at other places for well over $1000... she got it done with BC for less than $700 and it was done in a few hours versus all day. These guys never cease to amaze me! They're stuck with me now!

I had a wonderful experience at CAL Auto Service, thanks to Bryan…read more I needed the crossbars for my roof rack installed before my upcoming move. Since it was right before the Fourth of July holiday, I knew they were extremely busy and already had a full schedule. When I explained that I was moving next week and was on a tight timeline, Bryan went out of his way to fit me into his schedule, even though he was very busy. He installed my crossbars professionally and charged me a very fair price. I truly appreciated his kindness, flexibility, and excellent customer service. The waiting area was also clean and comfortable, with complimentary coffee and snacks, which made the experience even better. If I had known about CAL Auto Service sooner, I would have come here for my vehicle repairs as well. I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking for honest, friendly, and reliable service. Thank you, Bryan!

A Japanese car, truck, van -- needs to be treated with TLC. Most Japanese cars, if you treat them…read moreright with regular maintenance, will give you a long and beautiful life. But the ones serviced at Cal Auto Service don't just live the longest -- they're the happiest. People wonder, "How does your Toyota/Lexus/Subaru/Honda/Acura last so long?" Simple: it was serviced and taken care of by Peter, Brian, and the rest of the team at Cal Auto. This spotless, comfortable shop in Santa Ana, Orange County redefines what a mechanic should be. The owners and employees treat every Japanese car like their own -- doesn't matter the age, the tech, whether it's fully loaded or stripped down. You feel like the world's top surgeons and the world's greatest detectives are working on your car, making sure it leaves better than new. The consistency is the cherry on top. You'd think, "I'm only getting this treatment because it's my first visit." Nope. It's white-glove service every single time. Spotless bathrooms. Water, hot coffee, snacks. A waiting area that's actually comfortable. This place makes the dealership service center -- or any third-party mechanic -- feel out of vogue. Like Latin: a dead language. And there's total transparency. A full, honest explanation of what's working and what's not. This isn't the dentist who tells you your mouth is full of cavities because he wants to drill his way into your wallet when nothing's actually wrong. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is how Cal Auto rolls. They'll give you honest recommendations and an accurate forecast of what your vehicle has ahead of it. And if you just want an oil change and nothing more -- they listen, and that's exactly what you get, with the proper care your car still deserves. And if you're still not sold -- Cal Auto uses only the best OEM parts for your vehicle. They will never, ever bolt on some knockoff third-party Amazon part or rig your car up like Frankenstein's monster just to get it sparking and running. This review is based on 15 visits over four years. I always felt assured that my vehicle and my wife's were in the best hands -- from routine oil changes to actual car emergencies. They never wasted my time, and never wasted theirs. Every question gets a real, thorough answer. I drive 45 minutes from Los Angeles -- a city where mechanics are a dime a dozen -- just to go to Cal Auto. And honestly, anyone in Southern California -- San Diego, Orange County, LA, even up to Santa Barbara -- should be making that drive too. That's the price of admission if you want the holy grail of auto shops. A true diamond in the rough.
