I considered this liquor store to be out of my way - compared to some others I frequent - except for when I occasionally go to the nearby Trader Joe's. Since I was shopping there today, I figured it was time to visit... I won't be using that "out of my way" line any longer. For me, this store compares favorably to one I frequented when I lived in Dutchess County, Viscount. The whiskey selection is extensive, and they let you know that with the running total on the wall. I saw some harder-to-find bottles, but at the same time, two of my regular go-to bottles were absent. There's certainly enough other options. I really like the organization of the liquors as well. Everything was easy to find. Similar to the whiskey, the wine selection is also impressive, including the New York wines in their own area. Though once again they didn't always have specific ones I like but enough other options to satisfy me. The card was easy to get. They scanned my driver's license, I completed and signed a sheet (note that there is an option to select or not whether to receive e-mail notifications), and a minute later, I had my card, plus some unexpected discounts on the bottles I purchased today. Service was great and the ambiance is solid. This store is massive with every kind of spirit or wine you could want. I came here for the bourbon and barrel picks they are rumored to have. Well, I am here to tell you, the rumors are true! They have a ton of barrel picks. I grabbed the Green River barrel pick and the 1792 full proof barrel pick. I tried the Green River. Woah, it's delicious. It comes in at 132 proof but it drinks much lower and has all the complexities you look for in a great sipper bourbon. Worth the trip! Selection is outstanding! Prices are okay. This is what brings me back. I like to support small family owned businesses whenever I can. However, I cannot find wines produced in Sicily in the smaller stores. Sometimes, they may have one kind. We enjoy and want to support Sicilian wine makers. Store is huge, but easy to navigate, especially with a shopping cart to hold selections. Plus the store layout and organization are excellent. Signs are abundant and useful. The store is well lit, and the displays are both functional and attractive. Prices and descriptions are displayed well. Staff is available on the floor for consultation, if wanted. Employees are knowledgeable and helpful. It is a pleasant experience shopping here whether you want to get in and out quickly or browse. I found the wines produced in Sicily quickly in the larger Italy section of the store. Over 20 wines were available. I selected six reds. I also selected 4 Pinot Grigio from the Pinot section. And a Prosecco. Checkout is efficient. There are significant extra savings if you are registered. I saved $18. The friendly cashier asked me if I wanted carry out service, and I said yes. Exit 9 is a great big space with a broad selection. Today I took the time to inspect the perhaps 3 dozen choices of Islay scotches (that's the stuff that taste like medicine). There were some drool worthy bottles that go way beyond the usual brands stocked by the familiar distributors. Unfortunately, Exit 9 is much more expensive than my regular store (Purdy's in Saratoga Springs), giving me little reason to shop here. Today I did a head to head comparison on a liter of Evan Williams bourbon. It's $16.44 here, $13.99 at Purdy's. That's a 17.5% difference. They do have a frequency card that gives you $90 back after you spend $3000 but by then I will have overspent by nearly $450. read more

After shopping around at some of the local wine and spirits shops, Exit 9 is really tied for first place with All-Star. But in the "Thanksgiving Challenge" this year, Exit 9 was the winner by a mile. I was looking for some esoteric wines. An interesting non-malbec Argentinean wine and something good from Sicily for under $20 a bottle. I got a 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon and a white wine from Sicily which was dynamite. Plus, Exit 9 continues to carry White Horse Blended Scotch for only $20 a bottle. With gas back at $2 a gallon, I can still justify the trip. Good thing I don't live close by! Always spend way too much in here, not because prices are super high or outrageous, they just have a terrific selection of liquor and wine...huge, huge selection. They don't have everything (because I've asked about x or y and they didn't have it), but dang they have A LOT! Prices are better here than I can find at most of the liquor stores in the Queensbury/Saratoga areas so whenever I'm down this way, I almost always stop in to restock. Lots of special events held here for free tastings of both wine and liquor. You can join their frequent buyer's club and get email invites to special events and of course fbc discounts. They always have lots of people working to help you find what you need and I never spend much time in line at the register...which leaves me more time to get my drink on!!! Exit 9 Wine & Liquor was the final stop before stocking up the cars and driving up to the rehearsal dinner and wedding at the Inn at Erlowest in Lake George, NY. Exit 9 is a family-owned liquor store that has grown over the years, and is now housed in an old 37,500 square foot Linens-N-Things storefront in the Halfmoon / Clifton Park area, north of Albany, NY. This store is huge, and it was great fun wandering the aisles while stocking up on necessities for the weekend's festivities. I left my brother-in-law to comb through the numerous choices of craft beers, while I looked over the bins of wines from around the world, and gazed longingly at the various bottles of Scotch whiskies. *drool, foam, slobber, pant* I got a quick education on Argentinian wines, and picked up a bottle of Catena Malbec to enjoy over the weekend. Now why would anyone go to this huge liquor store on the day before Christmas? The answer is simple... Your spouse asks you to. The parking lot was almost packed. Cars were backed up trying to get into the parking lot AND out of the parking lot. But the place is so huge that there is no bumping into people shopping there. Staff are well versed in where everything is. A quick question to a stock boy on where to find the sherry and I'm directed to the back wall where the big sign says Dessert Wines. As I scan the shelves for the particular brand that my wife has requested I hear a friendly voice asking if I need help finding anything. I pull out my slip of paper with the first, second and third choices listed and all three are pointed out to me on the shelf. As I approach the checkout counters I see there is a stream of people pushing their shopping carts with five, ten, even fifteen and more bottles of booze, into a checkout queue. The line is actually moving at a normal walking pace. Before I know it I'm at the top of the queue and a spotter is directing me to one of the ten registers that is open. With a friendly smile, and a holiday greeting, I'm checked out with my single bottle of Savory & James Amontillado and on my way. Somewhere there's an elderly wine shop owner crying quietly into his cabernet sauvignon, I'm sure. That said, I do like to save money. As to whether or not you'll like Exit 9 Wine and Liquor, I guess it comes down to what you're looking for in a liquor store. If you want ambiance, go elsewhere. Come here for the fantastic whiskey selection, or for the array of inexpensive wines. Five stars for the whiskey selection, which offers a vast range of scotches, bourbons, ryes, and Irish & Canadian whiskeys. All the usual suspects, plus lots of bottles you won't find in most stores, everything from $25 Rittenhouse Rye to 21-year old bottles costing hundreds of dollars. For comparison, I'd say selection is at least as good, and possibly better than, All-Star Wine & Spirits in Latham. Three stars for the selection of other liquors (gins, vodkas, tequilas, etc.), which is narrower and more typical of an average store. As for wines, it really depends on what you're looking for. I'd guess that 80-90% of the wines here are priced $20 or less, with most being in the $10 - 15 range. If you're looking for a special bottle, or a highly rated wine, this is absolutely not the place. If, on the other hand, you're looking to take a flier on an inexpensive wine to go with a simple weeknight meal at home, they've got you covered. read more

I say place lightly, its more like a shopping mall of its own with everything you could possibly want from a wine or spirit. The staff is more than willing to help locate a particular brand and even check the back room or ask other employees for help if they are having trouble - Legit this place is just incredible. The prices are as fair as it gets too. If you are a fan of any particular spirit or wine give these guys a shot and chances are you'll not only find the same brands but yes they are indeed a few bucks cheaper or sometimes even several dollars less. You're gana want a shopping cart while you're here too.. its like a grown ups candy shop in here. They also have a rewards card that starts piling up just by shopping here - a must go place for anyone who is into any kind of liquor or wine connoisseurs.. I totally left out the cigar room they have which seems really cool but I'm not into them so don't have much feedback. Go check this place out, you'll surely love it from the friendly people there (I was asked by one to have a random free tequila tasting - really? Browsing through this Half-Moon warehouse uncovers the most delightful treasures in New York and other wines, worldwide champagnes, and unique cordials. It is pricier than other liquor warehouses downtown, BUT it is so orderly, clean, and presented with thought and consideration for the client's experience that I just keep going back. The most wonderful part: if you have a question, the staff can actually answer your question/get you an answer/help you to find/order/etc. It makes shopping such a pleasure. Try this place! I ordered a few things for curbside pick up. I arrived and called the number and was told the order would be right out. After waiting 20 minutes I called again. Finally the order arrived. I watched quite a few people go in and out of the store during those 20 minutes. Why have curbside pick up if no one pays attention to it? At least they got my order right. read more

A warehouse in lack of service, not in low price. Not a great selection, just a lot of space with the same old stuff (I was stunned to find unfindable items at Empire Wine). And make sure you know what the right price is, and demand it at the register, because there's no guarantee they'll be accurate. Stopped in to buy a Greek Retsina wine, was told it was $7.86 and the $6.86 price on the sign was just for members (which I knew wasn't true, but Exit 9 seems to resent correcting its errors). Just went along with it, but thought I'd give them a last chance (I wasn't going back because of other customer service horror stories, like the employees who do nothing but gather by the registers and discuss their social lives), went back for two more bottles and they hadn't corrected anything. At checkout finally got an employee to work and actually check the sign, and at long last they admitted I was right. I mentioned the previous ONE bottle I'd gotten before, and was told by "Mike" that I would have to drive all the way back to the store, with my receipt (long since thrown out) if I wanted that corrected. His attitude seemed to be that I was trying to steal the grand total of one dollar from Exit 9 (and better to keep one dollar than one customer). This is hardly the only problem that's made me give up on Exit 9. Customers are treated as an interruption, don't expect any help here (even asking where something is) or knowledge from the teeny-bopper staff who seem too young to buy their store's products (in contrast I was happily surprised by the amazing knowledge at Empire, knowing even the least known items like "amizaki"). I had asked about a Spanish wine, and gone through two employees who didn't know the location and didn't want to be bothered. Finally I got someone to call someone else, and looked at other wine as I waited. They never showed up, and on the way out I saw the person who was supposed to help. He said he'd been waiting for me to come over to him! In summary, don't even bother. The prices are realistically far from a great deal (not even a good deal), and price is about their only selling point. You can do far better just about anywhere else - and that includes the corner liquor store. read more

Here's the deal- this store has outstanding selection and variety and I regularly shop there. My issue and complaint is that the staff- without exception- ranges from disinterested in customer service to downright surly. If it wasn't for their tremendous selection I would not go here. There is plenty of staff on hand but not once has anyone acknowledged me as I browse or ever ask if they could help me. If they are working together on the floor they are usually conversing with each other so to gain their attention to ask a question can be difficult. The cashiers are the worse, there is absolutely no customer service or pleasantries at all. They are often talking to each other over your head as you check out. So they get a 4 for selection and good prices but a 1 for customer service. Wish I could go elsewhere nearby and not give them the business. read more

I really like this place, it always has exactly what I want, and it usually has it for better prices then anywhere else. I'm always mad at myself when I shop else wear and then go here cause I usually could have saved 5 or more dollars. I was also super excited to find that they had George T. Stagg in stock because its extremely hard to find (or so I'm told) and all I had to do was e-mail them and then ask in store...because its in the back room. This place has every and any type of wine and liquor you can possible want. Their selection is the best in Clifton Park, and the cheapest too. I heard that Empire's prices are lower but it isn't conveniently located for me. I particularly love that they have every wine section labeled off by regions in the world. I am always at their California section and Italy section trying new and different wines. The staff member that helped me was extremely knowledgeable. It is hard to fine people like that, that really know their stuff about wines. I find if I talk to someone that knows their shit #1 have a long and interesting conversation and #2 end up buying more wine than I originally went in to get. It's in a huge space since moving from its original location, and while they do have a lot of inventory it does feel a bit too big with a fair amount of unused space. I always thought warehouse stores meant better prices but not here. The same bottle of wine I buy at All Star in Latham for $9.98 is $11.89 at Exit 9. That's fairly significant and since I consider this wine my "house" wine I use it a lot to entertain. Overall in terms of service and pricing I prefer All Star. Exit 9 used to be my go to place.. Lately hasn't been the most friendly or helpful. Last Thursday was my last visit ever. Pasted staff at least ten times and not one hello, or can I help you. Cashier at register 3 was the first to say hello, approx 9:45 am. Upon completion of the sale, she said, 'there you go', no thank you, so no you're welcome. Upon walking out, she sarcastically said, 'have a nice day', then mumbled something else, then had a laugh with the other cashiers. There's a few sayings... I have to give experience there today 0 stars. The cashier was rude and actually raised her voice to me..I have been going since they opened . There prices are not as good as another discount store in our town but it was my place I always went when I needed something. I spoke with the manager who was a true gentleman and he said they have had problems in the past with this particular individual. He stated that she is rude to others and rolls her eyes at the customers. Well, it may be time for her to go or have a duty that does include dealing directly with costumers.I am sad to say I sill not be going back there .
