Be prepared to wait! During my visit recent visit, I was asked to arrive 25 minutes early. However, I ended up waiting for over an hour from the time my appointment was scheduled (this doesn't include the 25 mins that I was asked to arrive early) before being seen. I understand that unexpected delays can occur, but it would be greatly appreciated if patients are not asked to arrive early only to wait for such an extended period of time. As patients, we understand that doctors expect us to be punctual, and we strive to do so. It would be beneficial if the practice reciprocated by being more mindful of our time. If staffing shortages are causing scheduling challenges, perhaps adjusting the number of appointments per day could help alleviate this issue. They need to implement measures to improve wait times in order to enhance the overall patient experience and ensure that everyone's time is respected. read more

Dr. Ostempowski (great doctor) did my Full Knee Replacement 3 years ago. He recently moved his practice to Excelsior Orthopaedics. This was my first time seeing him since he moved. Office appears to be well organized and clean. Staff was friendly. Check-in was quick. Didn't have to wait too long to be called. Waiting room wasn't too crowded when I got there but was crowded when I left. Guess I got lucky. Fortunately they have free wifi to keep you occupied while you wait. I recommend completing and updating your medical history on their patient portal to avoid having to fill out paperwork when you get there, especially if it's your first time going there. read more

I didn't have a chance to call the office during normal business hours, so I called after hours on Friday, October 1st. I have recently been placed on antibiotics and pain medication due to an infection after carpal tunnel surgery. I called to inquire about a possible refill on a medication until my follow up appointment on Monday, October 4th. When the call was answered and I explained my situation, I was treated as if I was a joke, chuckled at, and told very rudely that they don't fill any medications on the weekends. I do not appreciate the hostility or the way I was spoken to by the after hours on call doctor (?) and expect all patients to be treated better and with a lot more respect. Receptionists were nice enough, can't speak to quality of care because no one would see me. I was referred to Excelsior by my doctor to have pins in my leg from prior surgery checked out due to pain and 3 doctors at Excelsior declined to see me without saying why (my insurance was accepted). I had to call the office to find out I was declined. The receptionist was kind and told me it usually takes 3-5 business days to hear back from a scheduling request (which I had not been told originally) but when I asked why I hadn't been informed that I was declined until I called to ask, just defaulted to "It takes 3-5 business days to hear back"... despite just having told me they heard back. Had total knee surgery Friday, July 23rd with Andrew Stoeckl/Excelsior. From the outset I was completely comfortable with the amount of care and personal attention I received. Dr. Stoeckl asked about my level of activity before my knee got really bad and understood that I wanted to be active again before I was too old to be active again! They took a multitude of xrays and then i had a consult with the dr. I asked whether a partial was a possibility and he informed me that I was way past a partial. All my cartilage was gone and I had pretty bad arthritis under the knee cap. He explained the surgery process thoroughly and then asked if I had any questions. From there I was set up with surgery, which I changed with no problem, so I could see my grand-baby, born during Covid. Pre-op went well, I don't remember anything and then I was being transferred to their condo unit in the Mosey. Talk about being pampered. Got lunch as soon as I got there. A PT came in mid day and ran through the exercises and then we ordered dinner from Giancarlo's, which was sooo good! The nursing care was phenomenal, round the clock care; they took care of whatever you needed. I had a nerve block so I felt absolutely nothing till late the next day. You're discharged at 9 the next morning, so you're on your way back home pretty early. The surgery came with a walker, a cane and a bag of helping essentials (extender soap sponge, sock assist, grab bar) even though they tell you to get these things before your surgery (??). I had pt on Tuesday following and Matt Alessi assisted me through a bunch of exercises. He was gentle, knowledgeable and made my first visit a breeze. I was extremely nervous about my pt, and he took that all away. I'm feeling good about my recovery. read more

Had to be a certain amount of time after another procedure. Instead of Dr apologizing for mistake he lays into me that I should have told the scheduling person how to make appointment. Excuse me?!? A patient should be telling your employees how to do their job? He went around that circle a few times and spoke louder and louder over me. Then he starts to rail about how in the 14 years he has been there scheduling can't do anything right. This sounds like an internal issue to me and a Dr who failed customer interaction. When I called and they made me speak to "patient" advocate who was certainly not advocating for me. I relayed incident and I realized she wasn't paying attention so I asked he does she think this behavior is correct? Wait for it ... She says "what behavior?" Palm slap to forehead. I tell the lovely advocate to refund my money I had prepaid for procedures, cancel my three existing appointments. They had one more go at gaslighting. I just told you the Dr spoke to me in an unacceptable fashion, why would I reward him with money? I have other options and I will take advantage of them. Then I hung up. I sprained my calf muscle -- I was told I needed X-rays (to ensure I didn't break a bone) and a Dopler (to ensure I didn't have a blood clot) -- injury was 100% muscle related -- the building is an edifice to the power of great insurance -- let's do every test and bill for everything possible whether it's necessary or not. After an exam by a PA (who knew less than I did) -- I was told to get physical therapy to strengthen the muscle. I called to make an appointment and was told they were booking 4 weeks out ! Seriously, I strained my calf muscle but need to wait a month ? It will be healed on it's own by then .... The person who I spoke to regarding the appointment for physical therapy was flippant and showed no concern about making an appointment a month later. They are useless !! read more

Well, I had the left shoulder operated on-Dr Reed said this was the worst torn rotator cuff he'd ever seen, and it took quite a bit longer to repair. He said he came pretty close to sewing me up, and scheduling a shoulder replacement! Eek! It seems that if it could be torn, it was, and if it could hold arthritis, it did. As with my first operation, Dr Reed took the time to show me on the MRI, what he had done, he even showed me photos of the operation, of the damage, and the repairs. He earned his paycheck that day, as even I could see the damage! And, as before, at every post op check, all my questions were listened to, and answered. I told a physicians assistant at my GP, who had done my surgery. She knew him-she had been a nurse at the local hospital Dr Reed had done his residency at. She said all the nurses loved him, because he listened to them, asked their advice on patients, and acted on that advice. It's a few years later now, I will always have a bit of loss of range of motion in my shoulders, but no more pain, no more living on Advil, no more ice packs at 3am! read more

I was referred here by urgent care after I fell on my wrist Memorial Day Weekend. Their immediate care hours were great as I could get in to have them review the fracture urgent care had identified over the weekend. Fast forward past the long wait and rushed visit --I scheduled a follow up appointment 2 weeks later as the fracture was deemed "not severe" and should heal on its own. No appointment reminders at all from this office. I understand this is my responsibility, but most offices call and remind or even call to confirm the appointment. Not here! Thankfully, I had a reminder set on my calendar for myself. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I called the day before and cancelled the appointment. I intended to call back and reschedule, but life happens. Fast forward to today, a week and a half after the cancelled appointment, and I receive a bill in the mail for a $50.00 no show fee! Billing department- Patty- was quick to verify the no show fee. I told her I cancelled and that I received no appointment confirmation/reminder from them. She interrupted me, ignored my concerns, and then said she'd adjust it off. No apologies, no explanation and then hung up. But had me get X-rays then back to the room where I waited for another hour. I have been a patient with this practice for a year now... I was told by one Dr that if my name was Josh Allen I would be taken care of already and that was a few months in. I have had to call and beg for my paperwork each and ever time it has been needed for me to give to work the following shift I worked. I have had paperwork that is needed take aproxamitly 3 weeks when it's needed the next day. I have asked numerous times to speak with Upper people in the practice. Sometimes I get Sandra.. mostly I get Anita ( who is great and sees that the company is incompetent pretty much as a whole) I am consistently lied to by staff of things being done when the are NOT... I have requested to Seapk to the CEO David Uba... I was actually told today to stop calling by Lisa in Billing even though I am a customer. Upper management needs to know that the employees can't do basic tasks and the last one the didn't do so far has cost me 11 days pay and counting... they were supposed to fax over the appeal to the NY State insurance provider which they didn't... then they had the audacity to tell me that it was sent on MAY 25th ( They knew on 5/17 that the information needed to be provided within 3 days) They never faxed it over until TODAY 5/30 & That was only because I got a call from work letting me know that they have me on an unpaid status pending the paperwork getting received and approved and u til it is done I'm not going to be Paid! I spoke with Anita who saw that they did Nothing and sent it over today via fax. It has been one issue of incompetence after another and they need to reimburse me for my lost pay. I bills to pay and I can not be penalized because of ignorance within a company. After a year of being tortured by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, I visited Dr. Kelly to see what I should do. He confirmed that I had CTS, and suggested surgery. I had nerve testing done prior right here at Excelsior, which showed nerve damage, and confirmed the need for surgery. The Dr. who does the nerve testing is great, too! So, I got everything set up. Up to this point, my fingers had been numb and/or tingly for a year, and the pain I had been dealing with was so bad that I could barely hold a pen on some days. I would frequently wake up in the middle of the night with arm pain, and be on the verge of tears from it. Wrist braces no longer worked, Biofreeze would work for a while but not all day. Dr. Kelly did the hand surgery endoscopically and the result has been amazing. The pain is gone, the tingling and numbness is gone. I'm 3 weeks out and though the surgical site is sensitive it doesn't hurt. I can hold a pen again, and sleep without being awoken by throbbing pain. It has been such a relief!! Though I'm still healing, I'm looking forward to the fully healed result. A couple things to note: 1. Dr. Kelly knows his stuff, but you will always wait, for more than an hour past your appointment time to see him. At first, I thought this would be irritating, but just download solitaire on your phone and watch HGTV in the waiting room and the time will fly. 2. Excelsior is mostly a 1-stop Shop. They do various diagnostic testing here, they have an outpatient surgical center, and they even have OT & PT right on premises. Get it all done here if you can. Makes things super convenient. 3. They have a patient portal which makes communicating easy. 4. Don't be afraid if you need to have a procedure done. For me, it's already worth it! Ask questions, have faith that you'll have a good result. And good luck! read more

I went on a medical leave of absence from work for my shoulder and neck. I dont care about name dropping because theyre scam artists at least at the transit location. Frank Luzi was my doctor who admittedly was a knee and hip specialist, not spine. Did xray, ordered pt, went along for a few months without fully getting better. At this point Im talking to his pa Victoria and she wants wants to go for further imaging which i agree needs to happen. I go for the MRI and there were complications, pain (normal) and numbness (not normal, caused from the MRI machine). Mind you, this whole time, the office is writing notes for me to stay out of work until further notice. Get the results, Victoria talks to me like Im a child, doesnt believe me that I had numbness come from the machine, and makes me feel like im the asshole for denying sedation especially when they wont acknowledge my concerns like a doctor should. I was released because they dont have the knowledge to help me further, but still through their tone try to make me feel like the asshole. Then when it comes to releasing MY OWN HEALTH INFORMATION, they ignore multiple requests to send me my information and send me a letter telling me to pay 15$ and they will fill out paperwork. Not ONLY did I have to tell them they were trying to extort me for my own information, but they then wrote in their information to the company handling my disability case, that " He has no work restrictions" EVEN AFTER THEY WROTE ME NOTES FOR MONTHS TO STAY OUT OF WORK. This company is disgusting and makes me loath doctors all the more. I hope karma is alive and well for all medical "professional". I went to excelsior for Total Knee Replacement. I cannot recommend them enough. A very thorough diagnostic appointment, followed by a session with Megan my outpatient coordinator. I chose to use the on site surgical unit with the hotel stay instead of the hospital . Every need was met , the round the clock nursing staff at the hotel was great ( Gladys is 5 star ) Jo came and gave me PT and PT training the same day and appointments for the next 6 weeks were set , she is just so thorough and kind. I was released with absolutely everything I needed to be home . Dr Pula was exceptional . He checked in a few hours after the surgery . The entire staff is friendly , helpful, concerned and encouraging. The non hospital option was perfect for my life and I am grateful to be given the choice ! read more

The Amherst After-Hours Emergency "clinic" was great. Very attentive and compassionate, and especially impressed that the person who fit me with an immobilizer explained what the cost to me would be because my insurance paid only about 80% of the balance. At the follow-up appointment after the MRI, the doctor did not meet with me, which might not have been an issue, except that the PA did not explain anything about the specific injury, continued care, or what to expect as the injury healed. I expected that something more supportive for my sprained knee (and partial tear) might be suggested, but nothing was. She indicated that she would contact the PT Department for them to contact me to schedule PT and no one in the department is available sooner than 5 weeks. This is the first injury of its kind that I have ever suffered so feel pretty uninformed. Dr. Stoekl was the assigned physician. read more

I was referred here by the ER after they treated me for an injury. They saw me in their Express department the following day. A PA looked at the X-rays and told me I had to follow up with a podiatrist in a few weeks. Although I was at the office for over an hour I had less than 10 minutes with the provider. They scheduled my follow up for a few weeks. Then 2 days before the appointment they called me to reschedule but they couldn't see me at the office I scheduled for and wanted me to drive to one of their other offices because he had a surgery now during my appointment. I told them I would reschedule but it had to be I. That office as I've already been inconvenienced by the cancellation and I'm not going to drive very far out of my way to accommodate that doesn't value his pervious appointment. I just called to make an appointment regarding low back pain and was told that they don't treat low back problems.

This is a very difficult review for me to write. I have seen/dealt with both sides of this Orthopedic practice, the good and the bad. In March of 2005 I had an accident that caused a compound fracture to my left leg. To say it was ugly would be an understatement. I won't get graphic however there were protrusions emanating from my leg. I was taken to Mercy Hospital at 7.20am. Long story short, I was told I needed surgery to fix the protruding elements. Side note here - I worked for a physician that was "on call" many weekends however he was never in Buffalo to respond to those calls. I did not work in his medical office, I worked at his "side hustle", where he spent much time ignoring surgery calls and so on. When I was told that I was to have surgery my initial response was "F**k!" "I will be here for hours". Not so. Lisa Daye was the "on call" ortho and she was there by no later than 10am. I was, after speaking to her, in surgery by no later than maybe 11am. She repaired my leg with pins and rods and staples and skin sewing. Have no clue how long the surgery took. She came to clean the aftermath in the evening by herself and spoke to me about what she actually did and why it was necessary. I have nothing but kudos for her! My leg works! Better than the lazy one on the other side! My issue with this practice is that I sent my husband here. He is having issues with his knee. Arthritis. Or so I am told. Won't go into old stories. In the past he has received a steroidal shot in the knee and sent on his way. Now the NP - he no longer sees any MD - says that he will no longer receive any sort of steroid. He NEEDS a gel shot. The "gel shot" appears to be a moneymaker for anyone practising medicine. It is costing us $1100.00. We have a high deductable. We need to order it from a "special" warehouse/pharmacy in Amherst. Per Independent Health. I have read up on this hyaluronan sham and it appears to help at most, 30 percent of the injectees. Of those, only 20% have long term alleviation of pain. By and large, this organization sucks. Try and call them. Just for Sh*ts and Giggles. You will never reach a human. You will wait longer online and for call backs then I waited for reparative surgery. Lisa Daye is/was the absolute best to happen to me. I wish her well. read more

I must begin by stating that I love my doctor at Excelsior and that the one and only reason I visited the practice is because I followed him here from his last place. The parking lot is vast and plenty of handicapped spaces prevail. I parked near an island with a fountain this January day and was stunned to see that sidewalk not shoveled, in fact icy patches stood out! I was not looking to take a spill so walked with the cars. Inside this new, spotless and attractive building was a maze. Turn right for stairs, or take the elevator on your left to go upstairs, walk to the desk, turn left if you want this right if you want that. That is essentially the dialogue heard every time you made a step. The staff was cheery and helpful. At the intake desk, I was informed that the information I took the time to fill out before my visit, online as implored, did not completely make it. Say what? The woman proceeded to rattle off a list of possible medical conditions, some involving bodily fluids, all loud enough to violate HIPPA. I quietly said no to all just to end the interrogation. "Your social [security number], for billing purposes?" Which I was to recite aloud, in the presence of others. Then a booming, "Do you work?" OMG, is that how you ask a grown woman if she is employed? And NONE of that information made it across the internet? Why did I waste my time filing all that out ahead of time?! Meanwhile, the intake area was such that I could clearly see the computer screen of the other staff member across the desk, who processes patients as they leave. I feel strongly that this entire area should be private. Any questions should be in a private room, not in the center for all to hear. And in such a loud (albeit friendly and sweet person's) voice. After my visit -- which included a knock-knock and unnecessary brief interruption of the six minutes reserved just for me -- I was directed through the maze to the medical device department downstairs. Again, the staff were friendly as I was directed left right left over down. The woman at the last desk I visited was assisting someone, but informed me there was a 15 minute wait and the item I need is not covered under insurance, and lastly announced the price of it. I slunk out of the building and sighed a deep cleansing breath of relief as I made my way back to my car avoiding that sidewalk by the statuary. read more

I was in and out in less than an hour of my appointment. Everyone was nice, and Jason Hooper was informative regarding my upcoming knee replacement in my left leg. Due to pain in my right knee, which also needs a replacement, I thought, and Mr. Hooper agreed that a cortisone injection would help with my recovery. Dr. Gambacorta did a ORIF on my left fibula and did not medicate me adequately for pain after the surgery. I was totally traumatized! He was rude to me when I talked to him after stating "You are not in pain!" I am a registered nurse and I am told that pain is what the patient states. He a rude, sadistic man that doesn't care about his patients! I had to go the ER after the surgery to get pain relief! The pain of the bone breaking was nothing compared to what he put me through! I'm going to do my best to give the short version of my experience. I attended sessions in the Occupational Therapy section for trigger finger. My OT told me there was scar tissue in my hand that needed to be broken up and every session he would massage so hard I was close to tears. I would wince, I would complain and every time he would tell me it has to be done and to take a breath. I would joke around that they should have something for people to bite down on it was that painful. I think even the other patients in the therapy room got annoyed with me complaining of the pain. He had me convinced that I had to do it and even encouraged me to have someone do this for me at home. After weeks of appointments with this being part of every visit. I went back to my physician & said I'm not seeing an improvement & I'm ready for a surgeon. I went to a highly regarded hand surgeon in the Excelsior building and he had an assistant with him who feverishly typed as he spoke about his observation of my hand. He mentioned gentle massage and that you do not want vigorous massage on it. I told him of my experience with OT and he said 'there is no scar tissue. You did not have an injury did you? Or surgery? Then there is no scar tissue. It's inflammation.' This got me thinking... did I waste my time & money and prolong healing & be put through excruciating pain for nothing? When I left my dr appointment I went to the OT office next door. I asked to speak to a supervisor and one of the team leads, who had seen me in the facility at my regular therapy visits , listened to my concerns. She told me she would discuss it with the department manager. Well this version isn't short but I want to be honest and list what occurred. So a week or so later a woman called me who I thought was the department manager. I saw online that she was just another team lead so that disappointed me. Anyway... she asked me what it was that I wanted. I said I felt like I wasted my time and money, and went through pain for nothing. I said I wanted 2 things... I wanted them to make sure the OT didn't use such extreme pressure on others and that I felt I wanted my co/pay money refunded. (Just to give you an idea of the OTs strength, mine measured in at 55 on my dominant hand and 25 on my hurting hand on my initial visit. I think it was a pounds of pressure measuring. Well my OT said his maxed at 165. So that is a huge difference to me. ) A few days later this woman called me back and said there was nothing they would do. They talked to the Dr and he said that scar tissue comes when inflammation is trying to heal. Which although true (I found through Googling) but that is the opposite of what he told me. She also said that the OT I received was protocol and that since I received the services then we were done and there was nothing they would do. I did express once again that I felt I should be reimbursed by at least the copays. She asked me why I did not complain to them during my treatment sessions, to which I replied that I trusted my OT and when he told me it must be done and it is painful but will help healing, I trusted him. I could tell the woman was tired of taking with me. She wasn't getting anywhere and neither was I. It's been several weeks and I am not posting this in fury. I'm looking back in it rationally. I do believe that it comes down to a matter of examining a situation, acknowledging that they understand my concerns and offering something as a small compensation for the miscommunication, misunderstanding, and overly aggressive technique that caused unnecessary pain. They said they talked to the OT and asked him to be careful of the pressure he uses going forward. Yet she of sorts ended the call with a too bad so sad tone. I told her I was disappointed and not happy. I refrained from using any names here because the people were nice, they just didn't seem to want to champion for me in any way as to the unnecessary pain they acknowledged I went through. Super disappointed, still have hand issues (after an excruciating cortisone shot) and I recently got a letter from them saying the hand surgeon is out on a leave right now. I'm thinking about seeking treatment elsewhere as I feel if I have any other issues along the way with them it will be too bad so sad. read more

I just switched to Excelsior from UB Medical Ortho (see my Yelp review for UB Medical-they are horrible-DO NOT GO THERE} and after suffering for a month at UB Med; thrown into casts on both my arms and not having them even wanting to check my broken bones' progress during the month; no call backs for even emergencies; extremely rude staff; and the doctor's assistant who took weeks to finally call me back and then she literally lied to me after she initially kept refusing to return my calls, I could not be happier with EVERYONE at Excelsior than I am. I wanted to go to Excelsior when my accident happened on May 26th, but Kenmore Mercy told me to go to UB Med. I wish I had listened to my instinct and gone straight to Excelsior. read more
