I had to replace my battery before coming here is the reason why they weren't working. And this guy fully knew that. All I needed was to drive my car a few more miles for the results to show. Rather than explaining all this to me he told me he will just go ahead and test my car for smog. If I go anywhere else others will reject me. But since I'm korean like him, he's making an exception. I had been coming here to get my smog check since 2019, and subsequently every two years since. Never had any major issues, except that the guy wouldn't really say anything. I felt it was rude, but as long as I got what I needed, I didn't mind, as typically I was in and out of there within a few minutes. However, this last time, he checks my vehicle and doesn't say anything until the end when he puts down that the catalytic converter had been "tampered." Odd, considering I've never replaced the cats AND he's the same person that conducted the visual inspection the last 2 times. When I asked for clarification, he told me I needed to go to the dealer and get the cats there. Again, odd, considering that there are aftermarket CA CARB approved cats. I would highly recommend reading the one star review before going to this place. The service here was horrible. A older man kept repeating "we can't touch". I understand the language barrier but as a business it was unprofessional. I simply asked for a oil change but they seemed to try to sell me on other services that I did not need. Maybe for being a woman they expect me not to know anything. When I informed them that I had brought my car a couple weeks ago to a different mechanic. Another guy went to go check my car and gave him a look as if it was fine. Then they both talked for a bit and kept repeating the same issue to me. This guy treated me like garbage. I have an old vehicle that means that many smog stations don't have the right equipment to check it. I called ahead and gave them the year, make, told them that they checked it last year. I asked him if he was ready and able to check this year. He said come in, gave me a time. I did, he made me do some of the work of turning the engine off and on, holding the brakes etc which I have never heard of before at any smog station nor did anyone else that was being serviced at that time had to do. After about 40 mins of this, he told me he wasn't going to go forward with the check, he denied ever having worked on it before. I told him that he most definitely did, he denied it again and asked for proof which I found outrageous. The proof is in my sticker and undoubtedly at the DMV. why would I make it up? Irritable angry older Asian gentleman ..he decided to change me $58 when the add says something less and different . Then he said my car was broken and he had to do "extra" things..then he added $8.00 because his device wasn't working properly. When asked about why it's more than quoted on line and also the additional $8. He flew into a rage and told me to go and don't come back after wasting an hour of my time . Don't go or at least ask ahead what's he's charging ...this was a small time petty con but just not having the rip off today. Owner is honest, gave me same price that he quoted over the phone a couple of days before. Worse smog check ever. The owner or worker side not even try to smog my car. After looking under my hood he saw an after market cold air intake that is California Carb compliant he just said to go else where. I then informed him that it is carb compliant for the state of California. Not sure if he know how to use his machines, or look up the part of my car but I took it else where and the other guy had no problem with it & my car passed no problem. May I say my car is a 2011 335i BMW that many performance part makers follow state standards. read more

Decided to go later like they stated and he took about 40 minutes for two cars before me and when he saw me, he asked me if I could wait longer so he could help another customer that came after me. He stated he couldn't find a piece to my car and had me waiting over a hour for him to just tell me to go somewhere because apparently my car model isn't common and "failed" me. He couldn't just tell me he didn't know my car and wasted my time of 2 hours overall. He was raising his voice at me and kept getting irritated, unprofessional. Paid about $45 dollars with added tip. Prior to this, had been going to STAR Smog on Sunset and Alexandria. The place has since closed down, but doing service with Ben has made me realize they were charging me extra. I used to pay upwards of $60-$70 (with coupon they send in mail advertisements). Koreatown, Excel Smog review: I will never return to Excel Smog. From reading others' reviews and based on my own experience, it can be assumed that the owner of Excel Smog fails female drivers on their smog check. He acts as if there is something wrong with the car by saying a part has been "tampered" with, even though the emissions portion of the smog check all pass. After he failed me twice for declaring EACH TIME A DIFFERENT PART had been "Tampered" with and required I see a mechanic (preferably one at Excel Smog) I took it to my mechanic who cautioned me that the Excel Smog guy is being deceitful. Then I took my car to Triple AAA and had two different mechanics confirm that my engine was in great condition, nothing was "tampered" and I passed all my emissions. Clear smog check as usual. DMV sent me my registration A-Okay. Excel Smog was totally wrong. I went back and asked for a refund, the owner of Excel Smog said that sometimes he makes mistakes but he never makes refunds. I told him I will be giving him a bad review on Yelp. Then he threatened to report my vehicle to the DMV for having "Tampering" in my engine. I was shocked that he was threatening me like this--I don't even understand how he can be this insane. I told him I was horrified that he would threaten me, a young woman, for asking for a refund when he admitted he made a mistake to fail my car twice. Triple AAA and the DMV both said he was wrong for failing my smog check (twice!). Excel Smog does bad business and I will never return. I would caution others to stay away. read more

I came here for a standard smog test. The gentleman who helped me was very nice. With that being said, my car failed the test. I was told to have something repaired, drive around for a few hours, and then come back to be retested. My car had been in perfectly fine condition and had never failed a smog test before. Instead of going to an autobody shop for a costly repair, I turned to Yelp and decided to retake my smog test elsewhere. (I went to Smog One on Hyperion). My car passed with no issues. I don't like posting negative reviews, especially when the staff is friendly, but wish I would have gone elsewhere first. read more

Very nice guy and great customer service. He was able to work with me and explained my situation. It was fast for the smog I think it took like 10-15min. But it also depends on how beat up your car is. The location was found easily and the waiting room is clean in comparison with other places. And actually has a accessible bathroom just in case you got the runs. Was able to make it to the DMV right before I had to go to work because the dmv was just a 3-4 min away depending how heavy your foot is. I went to this place to get my smog check and it didn't pass wish that was strange my car is a new model BMW. On my previous experience with other places my car never have any issues it always pass the smog check. So this older men who is doing the smog check told me to drive the car for two hours because it was cold and need to be worm so the smog check system can work. so I did but I also notice that he was telling others cars the same thing. Well I drove the car for 3 hrs I went back and still the same, at the same time I notice the other cars they were also there in the morning when I went to the 1st time and guess what they also there car didn't pass ether. These guys sabotaged my friends car! Brought it into the shop in perfect condition for a smog test. Literally just had a tune up not long ago. When we brought the car in the dude starts doing things under the hood. I've never done a smog test so I'm thinking this is normal right. Now I know he had no reason playing under the hood. He's supposed to use a flashlight and just look and verify that things are where they should be. No touching anything under the hood according to another smog tester I consulted with. When we got there the car ran PERFECT. When we left the power steering was leaking fluid. The guy was like "Lucky for you we can fix it here." They're scammers.
