I had a very good experience taking lessons from Excel. Dave, my instructor, was awesome. He is a very patient person and that's exactly what you need when you are learning to drive. I highly recommend him for an instructor. To this day, I still use his advice when I'm on the road. He has definitely made me a safe and alert driver. The only problem I had was with the online payment. I put my deposit down and it took 6 weeks for anyone to call and schedule a time. Now there was a long wait (4 weeks) because you are basically fighting with all the high schoolers to get a spot. But once I called about this, I was set up for a schedule right away. I would give a zero if I could. we were promised a home pick up for the driving portion(it's why the school was chosen at a higher price). That is a lie. My child was bounced around instructors, one of them physically and verbally assaulted her. The instructor she was assigned to had no openings most of the summer because she "wasn't working." We tried to schedule and were given final drives available after school started, not conducive. I was refused service or a refund to take my child elsewhere for the drives. I just finished wrapping up my Behind the Wheel Hours with Jennifer Grammer -- 10/10 would recommend her! I came in with a few hours of driving under my belt and had the goal of being prepared for obtaining my license within a couple of weeks. Since I'm a student over 18, I'll be taking the road test with the DMV, and Jennifer was an even better instructor than I could've imagined to get me ready on such short notice. Jennifer was engaging, patient, and really showed genuine care for her students, both on the road and off of it. She really takes the time to get to know a student and what their driving goals are, and she does a great job at directing drives that prioritizes balancing what a student needs to learn and what they can do to achieve the goals they set for themselves. read more

Do NOT use this driving school. They are awful! My daughter is enrolled in Excel Driving in Western Springs and always has an extremely difficult time scheduling her behind the wheel. There is one driving instructor and she is NEVER available! When my daughter tries to schedule a drive she is given a date 4 weeks out. My daughter is involved in many activities and this instructor offers no convenient times at all. Then, my daughter had to cancel one drive because she woke up with the stomach flu and now they are charging us because it was not 24 hours in advance. I guess she should have gone and brought a vomit bucket along. They will not allow her to schedule any drives now until this is paid. This is my third child that has used Excel and my two older children never had these problems. This place is awful. I do NOT recommend Excel. read more

This driving school makes promises they can not keep. They are not efficient, helpful, flexible or timely. This school was not able to meet my kid's drives. They canceled on him multiple times and he was not able to meet his requirements in time for his test. Finally we go to take his test and they did not submit his paperwork to the state. Do not use excel, they are not reliable. This has been the most frustrating, and upsetting experience. read more

Beware of this place before you purchase any classes! End of June, I purchased 3 hours adult behind the wheel class for my daughter who is a college student. Because my daughter needs to go back to college so she needs to finish the classes before the end of Aug. When I called Excel Driving School the lady on the phone told me that most classes were full until Sept in my area, except one instructor who was still available for teaching in July. She said if you were not able to schedule classes in July you could always cancel and get a refund (without mentioning cancellation fee). So I purchased the class because in the back of my mind I could always cancel and get a refund (no worries no charges). Unfortunately the only instructor who was available to teach quit before my daughter could even schedule a class. When my daughter called and tried to get another instructor she was told no instructor was available until Sept or she could cancel for a refund (without mentioning cancellation fee again). So my daughter cancelled the class for a refund. Yesterday I received a refund. I paid $180 for the class but the refund showed $170. I called the office and explained the situation. My point was that it was not our fault to cancel but it was on their end (the instructor quit and if they couldn't provide classes in July and August so they should provide a refund without charging us cancellation fee). The lady on the phone told me that they charge $10 for any cancellation and there was nothing she could do. I feel the way Excel Driving School running the business is wrong. Here are the two main points: 1. Excel Driving School shouldn't charge customers cancellation fees when they can't provide services. 2. Excel Driving School shouldn't mislead customers by saying you can always cancel and get a refund (without mentioning cancellation fee charge) before customers buy classes. When customers call them and they provide a refund they should let customers know whether there is a cancellation fee or not. read more

I tried to schedule a behind the wheels driving lesson for my son today and the scheduler gave me a hard time. They promised a lot when I enrolled him and now when they have my money, giving me a difficult time to schedule lessons which is not expected of a driving school of this reputation. I was on a call 30 mins with the scheduler Samantha who could not even schedule a lesson for my son and said her manager will call back. Looks like they don't have enough driving instructors and keep making excuses. New reason she gave me is that I need to teach my son driving on my car before they would train her with their instructors. This is ridiculous ! The reason I enrolled him in their driving school is that my car does not have a second brake and he should first get his steering wheel and brake control with the driving school first and after that I can train him further and comply with the 50 hrs of mandatory training. I wish the manager calls back soon to resolve this. read more

I'm surprised to see so many terrible reviews, but it looks like most of them are a couple of years old. Our son has been taking weekend classes at Excel and it has been a breeze. Scheduling behind-the-wheel classes has also been easy and my son really likes his instructor, Leo, who came highly recommended by more than one person. After the first btw lesson, they've scheduled subsequent lessons directly with our son to hold him accountable. The pacing of the lessons has been really good, and gives our son a chance to drive with us in between. All in all, we've been very pleased with our experience! read more

Wonderful experience for our twin daughters. Leo was their driving instructor. Leo is courteous, punctual and encouraging, everything you would want for your 15 year old new drivers. We started during the height of COVID, in July of 2020. Classes were on-line, but they were great. Our girls zoomed them like they zoomed school, no problem. Driving started later in the fall semester. As they got more experience with us behind the wheel, Leo would schedule driving time. We was very accommodating with scheduling and we just set it up by texting between our phones. He would offer tips and suggestions for them to work on, we would follow those, and we could tell that with driving with us and with Leo their skills were improving each time. They turned 16 in the spring and we were able to have their last drive/test soon after their birthday. We were provided with the paperwork and everything was clearly explained to us. Top notch place, convenient and pleasant experience. I will recommend Excel to others who are looking for a quality driving instruction facility! read more

I have now had 2 of my kids go to Excel while learning to drive and have been happy with the experience. This time with the pandemic and all we were left to scramble getting our drives in so that my son could get his license when he turned 16. I called the school and they recommended Kiran Haq as someone who could help. She went above and beyond to squeeze us into her schedule and was absolutely fantastic in her instruction. If you ever wanted to learn stick shift just because it's a skill you don't already have, come drive with Roy. I picked an early Sunday morning where there is less traffic, the roads around the office are empty enough to learn. The car is a very new Corolla so the clutch and shifter are very smooth and easy. As a first timer, we went around the lot. Roy keeps you at ease even if you stall the car. The value of what I got for what I paid was excellent. My only wish was if I has a way to get a hold of someone as I arrived early and the office was closed. Roy arrived on time and we were driving right away. if you feel you need another hour, he is flexible. I will most likely be back before I buy a manual car. read more

If you're in need of driving lessons this is the place to go. As an adult learning to drive for the first time, I took the 6 hour bundle anticipating I would require additional lessons and was pleasantly surprised to find this was not necessary. I believe this to be as a result of my instructor Dan Covic. Dan was fantastic, I feel as a adult my nerves and apprehension were on the higher level than that of a teen learning for the first time however his presence was both calming and reassuring. He is as involved as is needed but caters for confidence building within the learning process. By the end of our lessons, I felt assured in my skills, even while learning in our ever challenging winter season and passed my exam on the first try in just a matter of weeks. If you are searching for a school for your teen and want to put your mind at ease that they are in good hands or an adult learning for the first time i'd highly recommend Excel and suggest you specifically request Dan Convic. read more

My daughter is a student at Excel LaGrange and we have had a wonderful experience with Bill K. (instructor) and a somewhat difficult experience scheduling driving time. I signed myself and two teenage daughters up 2 months in advance for a car care class. We drove 24 miles last Saturday in 9 degree weather to make it to the 8:30 am class. We sat at the location for 40 minutes and no one showed up. Meanwhile I checked email and voicemail to make sure I hadn't missed a message and called Excel and the car care center repeatedly to find out what was going on. Excel opened at 9 am and finally answered the phone around 9:15 am. Of course they had cancelled the class two days prior and never bothered to let us know. There are obviously some issues with organization on Excel's end as it took her 10 minutes of digging through records to confirm that yes, I had indeed registered in advance. Gee, thanks. I expressed my extreme disappointment with driving 50 miles for nothing and re-arranging the entire day for the 3 of us who had planned to attend. There did not appear to be an abundance of remorse nor was there much of an apology from them. I was promised a call back from a manager. Needless to say, I am still waiting... You might want to consider Top Driver, I know I will in the future. read more

I had my driving lessons scheduled with Miss Kiran Haq. I was going for my first time driver license. In spite of being first time driver, She always made be comfortable and had confidence and trust in me when I was behind the wheels. She always set short term goals for my weak areas and worked on it gradually. Her words of encouragement were always beneficial which help me develop confidence. I wish I could say I've had a positive experience with the Excel in Wheaton but that has not been the case. My driving instructor gave me little feedback, randomly QUIT before I could finish my hours, and left in his place was an overbooked, overworked, critical woman. I had several sessions with her, and requested to have my last soon, but her only availability was several weeks away, and because of this timing, my LAST session I needed before I could get my license was postponed several months (I was previously on track to get my license in two weeks). I have several younger siblings who will need driving instruction soon, and when they do, I will tell them, "go anywhere except Excel." read more

I would not use Excel driving school. They have promised to call me 3 times to set up my daughter for driving. They still have not called over a period of a month. They make promises that the driving instructor will call to set up times to begin driving, and the instructor never calls. They seem to be too busy to actually do what you have paid for them to do. I have 2 other children that will be learning to drive, and we will NOT be using Excel. If you have other choices in your area for driving school, choose those. My daughter just completed the driving and classroom course for new drivers. This course was ok. I must say I was disappointed with the driving portion. They never took my daughter on the highway or taught her how to parallel park. My daughter's school schedule was full, so we were unable to take the course there. If this lace fits your scheduling needs, then it's an option. Just be warned you may have to pick up the slack in terms of driving lessons. read more

This is NOT the place to go if you have a busy schedule. I paid for (8) BTW classes and after the 1st drive the instructor said the 2nd drive would be in 10 days. Long story short, 10 days between drives was the norm for this instructor. I had to argue to switch instructors and then (2) classes were canceled by the new instructor and times weren't available to switch because "he's really busy". Again, I had to argue to get the classes that they canceled rescheduled. Sandy is the only person who is helpful there. read more

I had my first lesson with Excel this morning. My teacher, Dan, was excellent - he put me right at ease and paced the lesson in a way that made me feel confident while stretching my comfort zone. Because I have anxiety re: driving, my instructor must be able to assess my abilities accurately, set goals that I can meet successfully, and know how to introduce a challenge in a way that makes me feel confident. All three criteria were met this morning and I scheduled my next batch of lessons right away. Figuring out which package to get was a breeze and everyone I have talked to in the office has been friendly and helpful. read more

We had a disastrous experience with the Excel driving school located South of the Naperville North High School. Our son enrolled in the Summer program. And now it's October and still has not sit behind the wheel and operate a single session of road test. Excel seems to be happy with taking 3 time the cost compared with school and run with it. They kept on playing phone tag with us. They promised to call us within a week, but they seems to be overbooking their instructor and never call us back. The latest is Coach Floyd, which called us 3 weeks ago and never got us back. When we press them, they said this is their policy that they don't "rush" the schedule like the school does. Anyone who finish within a year is "good". This is ridiculous as I don;t believe stretching this program so long would have any benefit to the kids. Avoid this private driving program and stick with the one offered by school. read more
