My daughter has been going for a few years now and her math and reading have taken off. My wife and I credit this Kumon center as a major part of that. Friends and family are so impressed with my daughter's reading ability at ages 5,6, and 7 they they've entered their children in the program as well.

What: after-school supplemental Math and Reading program. This is not a tutoring center so don't…read moreget confused. You can do both programs or one. After an assessment, your child will be given daily worksheets that build good study habits and understanding of fundamentals. There is one instructor and several assistants. My 5th grader has been doing Kumon since the summer before Kindergarten. She is doing 6th+ grade level math. I find it helpful because it is daily practice of fundamentals. It is most evident after the summer when everyone returns to school and has forgotten everything, while my child jumps right in with everything fresh in her mind. Because she is ahead of everyone, this gives her confidence at school as Kumon gets harder, and makes her feel good about herself. This daily reinforcement is important and I equate it to brushing your teeth - you just do it. Even on your birthday, even during holidays. Each packet only takes 10-20 minutes depending on difficulty. She will do Kumon until she finishes it (probably high school). We started Kumon in California and since moving here 2 years ago, we have been very impressed with the instructor, Scott. He is very involved with helping the children and runs a very organized center. He always touches base periodically with the parent. In California, the teacher's center was a paper nightmare, the parents were instructed to wait outside (there was nowhere to sit) and she was always to busy to have a conversation with you. Price: both programs for $230 per month. You can do just math only or just reading only if you prefer. Ambiance: large space with seating for parents in the front area to *quietly* wait for their child to finish their work with a viewing window and main area for the students and the assistants. If your child is older, you can also wait in your car but you must be available and not just drop your child off unattended. Location: I don't know why Yelp lists as Anthem Hills, but the sign on the door is "Green Valley Kuminside plaza behind Osaka Japanese Bistro, next to Lazy Dog Pet Grooming. Plenty of parking available.

It's quite a change in his academic progress and his enthusiasm for school. He says Yayy every morning when I tell him what day it is, and that's school day. He started reading when he was four and a half. I don't have to ask him twice when it's reading time at home. Somehow Challenger got him to feel like he is having fun when he reads or works on the worksheets. He is able to explain to me errors he makes on his worksheets at school, and able to show me corrections. I am happy with his academic growth at this school. I like that the school entrance is locked at all time. You can't get to the front desk before you get approved to pass through the locked entrance There were couple times I had issues with admin. At first, I didn't know the school required uniform shirt and pants. I only ordered my son uniform shirts and went to buy him pants from a clothing store. One day he came home in someone else's pants with no note to explain why his pants were changed. When I called, that was when I was informed about the mandatory uniform. I was upset at how they made him change into different pants at school, and how they didn't have the courtesy to call me to work out the uniform issue. Another time was when I received a past due notice, and a warning of my son's school termination if the past due was not taken care of by so and so date. I was not made aware of the due. When I called the school to take care of the amount, I was told that it was from the one day that we picked him up late. Ms Brenda always calls me back in timely manner. For how happy my son is at this school, I can look past all the admin issues I have had.

My father-in-law, whom I consider one of the smartest men I've ever met (attorney and real estate mogul), encouraged me to sign up my daughter for Kumon. He said it's all about repetition, and he was right. Kumon has been a trusted math and reading tutoring system that has been around for 50 years. My daughter started when she was 3 1/2 years old, and she has already exceeded my expectations 100 percent. Kumon is an after school program too, so a child or teen any age can benefit from it. Each center is individually owned, and I really like this one on Silverado Ranch. The lead instructor is Michael Morrison, and he runs the center. The first step is to call him at the center and he will set up an appointment to assess your child. When Grace was assessed, he does at when the center is not doing any tutoring, and he can meet with my daughter and myself. You can choose either math or reading or both. We chose to do both, there is a monthly payment plan, but we choose to pay 6 months in advance and received a discount, coming to $1500 total. We are finishing up our first 6 months and will be signing up again. It is totally worth it, I feel my daughter has a huge academic edge already. We plan to complete the entire course over the years to come. At this tutor center, I am pleased with our tutor. My daughter goes to Kumon twice a week for 30-50 min, and always sees the same tutor Ms. Freya. We love Ms Freya! She is very professional, friendly and keeps the little ones on task in a nice manner. My daughter seems to learn a lot from her and listen to her. Overall, this center seems to have consistent tutors with very little turnover. That says a lot about Micheal, he must be a good leader to his team. Parents can wait in the lobby, there is a glass so we can see our kids hard at work and keeps everything done with our kids in plain view. that means a lot to over-protective moms like me. Lastly, I would like to point out that us as parents have to be involved with their Kumon work. There is homework, and if your Kids are as young as mine, you must be with them to help them through all the homework. If your kids are older, they are more independent with their homework. Thank you Michael and Ms. Freya for expanding Grace's math and reading skills. She is starting off on the right foot, and is building great foundation study habits.

It is amazing to see how far this school has come. I feel that the skills I learned from attending this school from 2nd grade through middle school have carried with me until this day. My reading and writing skills are strong and this school truly prepared me for college. As an adult now, I read quite often for fun. This academy truly focuses on a classical education, which is not a focus in public schools today. Scholars learn cursive and multiplication/division starting in second grade. These skills stay with them for the remainder of their schooling. This academy does a nice job focusing on building the skills they've learned brick by brick each school year. Now as an adult, I hope to send my own children here one day so that they can experience the same type of educational experience I had in my childhood. American Heritage Academy has a warm, friendly feeling the moment you walk in. Scholars are beyond excited to come in each day and see their classmates and teachers. It is a school that is rigorous, but students look forward to coming each day because of the special, nurturing environment this school provides. It is a very family friendly school, and you can be as involved as you wish to be in your child's education.

My child is somewhat awkward like most preteens and has been hurt by the very unkind words of peers. The teachers that we had at both schools were GREAT (6th grade teachers at Coral and 7th grade teachers at Pinecrest.) No complaints there.
