I wish I could give at least four stars but let me explain... First, I've been to this salon maybe four times and I've NEVER seen anyone leave with hair that didn't look amazing. Second, the staff is super professional and cheerful. Natasha, the owner was very polite when I called to say I wasn't satisfied with the way my hair had turned out. However, after reading a couple other reviews that seem to echo my issue, I feel I need to enlighten those looking to make a decision whether to go here or not. I have 4B/C hair that I never wear straight. I also have various curl patterns and texture throughout like most naturals so when my hair is in it's natural state it shrinks a lot but by different degrees throughout. I came to Evolution for a cut because I had some breakage in the middle. I had washed my hair before and blowdried it lightly. When I got there Tiffany said it needed to be blowdried more. Now, this is MY fault for not stating that I didn't want my hair straight, because everything in me knew this would not end well. And it didn't. I can tell that Tiffany is amazing at cutting hair, she went through and made sure everything was even and I left with a seemingly good cut (although I thought it was way too short because again my hair shrinks a lot in the natural state, another reason I should have never agreed to having it straight when cut) . Anyway, I washed it a few days after and DISASTER. No one would believe that my hair had been professionally cut, it was so uneven and some strands were almost bone straight. To cut a long story short, the lesson is to know your own hair. I know I never wear my hair straight so there is no benefit to my hair being cut when it's straight. If you wear your hair straight these are the ladies for you. However, if you;re like me and you mostly wear your hair in the natural state, I wouldn't suggest getting a cut here. As Natasha explained, they were trained to cut hair when it is straight and they do that very well. Next time, I will find someone else for a cut because when I've cut it when wet the results were always satisfactory. read more

It took me a while to write this review as I wanted to rectify this matter with Natasha but unfortunately she has not made an effort to resolve this issue. I have been going to Evolution for a while now maybe two years and I can honestly say that for each visit (monthly or sometimes every other month) I walked out of there paying around $250 (includes tips for both the stylist and the shampoo girl). I'm giving Natasha and Evolution a one star because eventhough I have always been satisfied with my hair, I have recently become a bit perturb with their customer relations skills. What got me ticked off is being charged $2.50 for being 5 minutes late!...without being notified that there were late charges in 5 minute incriments. With all the notifications that they bombard my inbox with,one would think that if they have decided that it's a new policy to charge a late fee in five minute incriments that the customer would actually be notified. I'm a VERY DISAPPOINTED being that I'm a very loyal customer that pays premium at this salon and also tips very well I may add.Natasha the owner does not take into consideration that parking is ridiculous and you have to pay by the darn meter so that's additional money out of your pocket. Now if Natasha was a "savy business woman she would know not to "nickle and dime her loyal clients especially if they tip well, considering her high price list. I mean any smart business person would know that's a turn off when a client feel as if they are being robbed. I have called and left messages for Natasha to speak to her about this charge before I go back but she has not returned any of my calls. We've had a professional and personable relationship so to think she would ignore my messages only confirms that she really doesn't care about her clients and only care about the money and every smart business person know you cannot make money without developing a trusting relationship with your clients allowing you to have a loyal client base. loved it- My stylist was Jhavuanna my hair is notoriously unpredictable. Its natural, fairly long, thick and straightens to silky-blowin-in-the-wind smooth but i'll be damned if it will do a spiral curl for anything less than an old school stove iron that's been cooking on max for at least half an hour.. needless to say, i struggle with the local Dominican spot because yes- they will wash it and dry it for me because I'm lazy- but what about when i want it to look actually nice, not have half of it broken off AND have it last longer than the time it takes me to get up from the chair and walk to the door?? Jhavuanna to the rescue!!! In her consultation, she was very knowledgeable and made helpful recommendations. What came next is what showed me the true quality of this salon - It was the first day of training for the woman who washed my hair and unfortunately, after she washed, conditioned and blew dry there was a lot of residue left over. Jhavuanna immediately rewashed my hair. Then it was re-conditioned and blown out by Vanessa - also super sweet and very knowledgeable. The only way you can judge the true quality of a salon, is what happens when something goes wrong. Mistakes can always happen and I couldn't have been happier with the way the staff handled the situation - timely and professionally with the final outcome and the health of my hair as most important. But yes, the final product was fantastic - lovely loose spirals, great shine, and wonderfully light weight - COMPLETELY worth the price and I definitely do not mind paying for great service. Also it was exceptionally clean, (they do not play pimp with the barbicide!! SO good to see!!!), everyone was super nice and friendly and I really did enjoy the experience. I figure, If I'm going to pay a significant amount of money (read: significant= more than $20 lol) to get my hair done, they better do a damn good job and on that, I am completely satisfied. I never do reviews but feel this one was worth my time and can hopefully save some one else from a disaster. I was recommended by a friend because I needed to get a great haircut for an upcoming trip and came here about a month ago. I have natural hair that I NEVER wear straight and at the time I had experienced some breakage but my hair was armpit length. I told the stylist that I'd prefer not to blow dry my hair because I never use heat on my air plus I thought it made more sense to cut it in the natural state because then you can properly assess how the cut will look. She disagreed and against my better judgement I went with her. In the end I wasn't that happy with the cut, because it was a lot shorter than I had asked for. It was pretty much a TWA, I had unknowingly big chopped from arm pit length! Anyway, hair is hair and it will grow back. The problem is however, fast forward a couple days after and I decide to wash my hair, step out of the shower and realize that some of my hair remained straight, while as type 4 hair does, the rest had shrunk and curled. What had seemed like an even cut was now a mess with some parts obviously longer than others and HEAT DAMAGE!! For the life of me, I can't understand why they deem it necessary to straighten (blow dry) your hair before cutting! Anyone who understands natural hair will understand that this isn;t necessary if you dpn't wear your hair straight because not only won't you see how the hair is really being cut (different sections of your hair shrinks by different amounts) you also risk heat damage. Needless to say, I am really unhappy with my experience and have will not return here. I hope the management can learn from this and offer the option to have your hair cut in the NATURAL state, the way it grows out of your head! read more

When I saw that flat iron I thought, "she cannot know about this wool on my head." But as I sat through the styling my hair was feeling like silk. The end result was a smooth, bouncing and behaving look fit for a hair magazine cover. The style lasted for more than two weeks - quite impressive. After three consistent experiences with Miss Tiffany, I was bragging to my friends and family about how Tiffany can press the "hell" out of anyone's hair. I have watched her press out natural beyond the elbow, thicker than mine - GOD Bless her!!! The owner, Natasha has received multiple Blessings from GOD in natural haircare, styling and consulting her clients. Natasha has without fault pressed, twisted, colored and cut my hair like no other hairdresser in NYC. While she is making me over in her chair, she consistently offers tips about at home haircare. Additionally, she reminds me about why some products are not good for my hair type. "Versatility" is her strength. With every visit EVOLUTION asks me "when have you last combed your hair?" I always respond, "not since I left here or I do not remember." But I always leave looking remade. Beautiful first experience with Evolution! The salon is a hidden jewel in its space. * Natasha KNOWS what she is doing! She is both talented and knowledgeable at her craft. * The staff is warm and professional * They are efficient and fast without sacrificing quality service * Superior client service I am a loyal customer to a particular salon that I have frequented for the past several years. But recently having taken braids out of my hair for a year a half, I wanted to let it breath. Not wanting to perm my hair, I went to my usual salon for a blow out and flat iron, hoping my stylist would be able to get a relaxed look. But my virgin natural hair was resistant to the desired result. Leaving me with a look that cried out for a relaxer. Depressed and at my wits end, my sister suggested I accompany her to see Natasha the next day. Reluctant to spend the money a second time for what I feared would be the same experience, I was in for quite the surprise. Natasha not only was able to give me a relaxer equivalent look, but she styled it as if it was cut in a particular style (which it wasn't). I was so happy, I was near tears. I would (and will) recommend this salon to others. The biggest problem is how am I going to leave the salon I've been patronizing for years to be a new client of Evolution. I found Evolution green room salon off of google, I googled "African American Hair Salons" and I found a bunch of listings and for some reason I decided to go here. I am an incredibly anal person about my hair styles, and for a very long time I would put my own tracks in and go to the local salon near my house and get it cut, but I was gluing the tracks in, and inevitably it began to take my edges and my hair out. I've wanted a short hair cut for the longest, but for some reason it seemed unattainable because of how damaged and short my hair actually was. I decided to go to Evolution to see if there was a possibility, When I got there I was greeted by "Natasha" who was really friendly and very helpful with all of my questions, She recommend a Mizani relaxer and a cut and some tracks for the front. The entire process was actually a breeze and the entire staff was very welcoming and it was well worth the money. Natasha cut my hair so nice, I'm actually amazed. When I got to work that day, all of my coworkers loved it and so did my mate. I don't think I'll ever go anywhere else to do my hair, this was by far a 10, and as a matter of fact, I noticed everyone that walked out of that salon, there hair looked flawless whether it was short, medium, or tracks, Its just an overall amazing salon, and i'm sooo blessed to have found it. Natasha is the best hairstylist I know. Yes! she is incredible with all types of hair because she eats, sleeps and breath hair. Natasha has been my stylist for many years, yes she is incredible so I have followed. Here is a short story of how Natasha became my stylist. I use to go to a salon and my stylist wasn't Natasha. I would sit in my stylist chair and I began to notice Natasha's clients, how she would just make their hair so beautiful. They always left the salon looking good. After some time, I began to wish Natasha was my stylist. Don't get me wrong, my stylist was good but not great. So guess what? I waited patiently and one day my stylist went on vacation and said I could pick another stylist in the salon to go too while she was away. So who do you think I chose??? Yes!!! Natasha and I've been happy with my hair ever since. My hair is natural so I alternate between curly and straight looks. You're probably wondering what happened when my stylist came back what did I do? I didn't go back, I was honest. I thanked her for her time, gave her a card with a tip and told her I wasn't coming back. Evolution is a salon with a professional and punctual staff so you're not wasting your entire life there. this is an AMAZING salon. look no further ladies (of color and otherwise, of any and all hair types - the diverse array of people who were there while i was all left looking and feeling like stars!). i went yesterday for the first time and am still on hairstyling cloud nine. the stylists at evolution are professionals through and through, and the salon has a wonderfully welcoming vibe. they listen to you, give you good advice, actually do what YOU want them to do, are exceedingly kind and friendly, have a very warm and positive attitude and in short make what can be a stressful and unpleasant experience fun and uplifting. they use only organic or natural hair products (as much as possible - i.e. there's no such thing as a natural relaxer), which are available for sale at reasonable prices. additionally, they do indeed give you 20% off the first time and have various ongoing specials thereafter. they offer waxing (i didn't try it, but their facilities are very clean and hygienic - i'm sure they'd do a good job) and nails as well, and on tuesdays and wednesdays you can get a beautiful mani/pedi for $25. additionally, as far as salon prices go, theirs are quite reasonable and you definitely leave the salon feeling like your money was well spent. my hair looks and feels healthy and i love the cut they gave me! go now and be beautiful and happy! read more

I've been going to Evolution off and on for over 8 years. Off because I've had short kinky hair that doesn't need a stylist besides my own hands and protective styles where I just leave it alone, and I also moved away for a couple of years. When it comes to flat ironing my natural 4c hair, I can't trust anybody else, including myself! Natasha has always run a tight, professional ship. I'm always offered a drink, ranging from tea to water. The receptionists are pleasant, regardless of who's at the desk. The women who patronize the salon are friendly. And of course, the actual services are impeccable. My hair is super finicky. It's as 4c as 4c gets. But it's also medium-fine and high porosity. Simply the worst of all worlds! And because it's fine but also wiry and easy to tangle, it requires extra TLC. The stylists here intuitively work accordingly. They never use fine-tooth combs or brushes to detangle. Those tools can be a 4c haired girl's worst nightmare! Nowhere in the city have I seen the salon use a wide tooth comb without me telling them first, except for Evolution. As others have stated, the prices match the quality. Though, I've seen many shops that charge more for a flat iron and with worse service. And lord those shampoo girls can scrub! It's always a treat going to Evolution. Truly a god-send for natural haired girls. read more

I have been living in Brooklyn for 5 years and have been searching for a salon since I got here. I've tried high end and low end and this salon is stellar! This place is like an undiscovered gem! They use top quality (primarily natural) products and they are educated about how to work with the hair of women of color (straightened or natural - they are equally great with both, which is RARE). Everyone there is warm and friendly and helpful - there was none of the "hard sell" I seem to encounter in most salons. The salon is very clean and comfortable. Also, they don't waste your time - they do a great job and get you on your way. It's the first time in a long while that I had a really relaxing experience at a salon and also walked out with beautiful, healthy hair. I knew, right when I walked in the door the first time, that I was in good hands - all the stylists had beautiful hair and so did their clients. The services are reasonably priced - not cheap, but well worth it. You don't walk away feeling like you've been cheated. If you're not sure which stylist to go with, I recommend Naidra - she does a beautiful job and during your consultation (and throughout your visit) she really listens to what you want and makes suggestions that are right for you and your tastes/lifestyle. After trying another salon in Brooklyn. I was referred here and i must say my experience was amazing. The staff is very attentive, the environment is very Zen. I gave this other Brooklyn spot three chances to get their customer service act together. I mean its not like i was going there for free. I am not one to name drop but i will say this, Evolution knows how to treat their customers. Understands the word 'CUSTOMER SERVICE" I appreciate and love a salon that understands the concept of TIME and does not make you wait for hours after you have made an appointment. A place that even if they are not running on TIME will ensure you are comfortable and constantly offer you something to drink while TIME goes by!!!! Now to the hair, I went in with what i knew was going to be painful decision to have to cut my hair all off after another salon (dominican) ruined my hair. Sharntai was amazing in that process, practically holding my hand wand ensuring me i was going to look fabulous!! I did and i do. It has been a complete transformation and i feel sexier and more confident. Don't know if i will go back to long hair. I've been a regular Saturday patron of Evolution Green Room from the very first appointment. They captured my attention from day one with their excellent customer service, friendly staff and welcoming environment. They take my time seriously along with all those of their other patrons. I have an official appointment time for my services that factor in the amount of time that they will take. I am never left waiting an inordinate amount of time, and I'm ALWAYS satisfied when I leave. The fact that the salon uses all natural products is a bonus. I went into the salon the very first time simply interested in maintaining my regimen, but I quickly learned that their methods are holistic. They really do care about the health of your hair. I went from relaxing my hair for over 20 years to transitioning to natural and I've never been happier. To be clear, Evolution is not only a natural hair salon, I've seen women come in for weaves, braids, relaxers and color, and they've all left happy! Let me say I recommend this place whole heartedly! Okay so I seen my cousin at another family member birthday dinner and I loved her hair and asked her where Can I go to get my natural hair straightened like that and she told me all about Natasha who is the owner and the stylist who ended up doing my hair. So immediately I took the number but didn't call right away I needed to pick a date that I definitely had the time to do it, anyway I booked an appointment with Nyasia and she was very helpful. Fast forward now I arrive 30 minutes early I was greeted by Tiffany first and then Natasha came from washing a clients hair to shake my hand and introduce herself, she was very pleasant. I got a wash deep treatment blow dry and press, I am very pleased with everything about this company from the great customer service to the decor and they offer you something to drink more than once while in the chair waiting. I must say I've been a natural for 3 years and never did this before because I'm a girl that likes her twist out and high puffs but I will go back in three months as recommended! read more

I recently went in there for their Tuesday $45 special . First let me say when I walked in , I felt welcomed . The Manager (Top Stylist) knew exactly , what I wanted & she called her assistant Justina (I think that's how u spell her name) to start working on me . The assistant was a sweetheart she explained everything she was doing to my hair . Explaining the shampoo she used , to the treatment I was getting . After she was done , she offered me tea , water , or coffee . I asked for tea & she made it so delicious . The hospitality at Evolution Green Room & the service I received ,makes me want to become a regular there . On top of that they also have Facials & Waxing !!! Looks like I'm gonna have to call my girlfriends & set up appointments , because facials & waxing are our thing . I give this salon 5 STARS !!!! If you haven't visit there yet , I suggest you do so . Evolution Salon truly is as good as it gets!! After I experienced a mishap in my bathroom with an at home texturizer, I decided all I really wanted was to get back to natural ASAP. I have now visited the salon twice and I have to say Natasha is a miracle worker!! She's patient, understanding, and actually listens. Natasha gave me a haircut that kept my length but gave me shape to hide all the straight pieces I had overprocessed. The prices are a little high but you get what you pay for including a full on consultation before anything is done. Also, she runs a tight ship which is worth its weight in gold....GONE are the days of spending the entire day in the salon. I am in and out of there in an hour and a half with cut, color, and shampoo/deep condition/style. Where else can you get SUCH amazing service? My decade-long avoidance of hair salons is over! Natasha Paul turned it around because she made me look and feel badass without the physical / psychological torture that I have come to associate with salons and having a Jupiter-sized mass (no joke!) of kinky black hair. I jumped in the deep end with a dramatic trim and all over highlights that made my hair look modern, multidimensional and healthy. I finally found that nurturing and fun place where one feels comfortable and trusting, but inspired and adventuresome all at the same time. 'Nuff Respect to the professionals that can pull off that kind of miracle repeatedly with each customer (newbies, like myself, and the regulars who have been telling me to go to Evolution for years). If you need color full or hair line its the place to be to get it right. I'm from Atlanta, hair mecca. So I've experienced a lot. Evolution has an excellent ambiance and the people who work there are generally very kind. However, the rent is just too damn high. I'm pretty sure they know it, too. The better stylists in ATL will give you a discounted rate if you pay for the month and come at the same time each visit. For example, I could pay my stylist in ATL $80 for the month and come every other week for a wash, conditioner, and press. I think if Evolution did that, business would be through the roof. Most of the stylists are really strong, the space is kept up beautifully, and there's no riff raff or anything to worry about. But they have REALLY got to come down on those prices in order to gain more loyal customers...and please stop trying to sell folks add-ons and other stuff. We can barely pay for the service we came to get! read more
