To preface what I have written here, I am genuinely upset that I cannot rate this establishment zero stars and am instead required to surrender at least one. I believe this tragic tale will adequately explain the dietary disaster that is this buffet. Apparently even my suffering has a character limit. I have eaten bland, stale, overcooked, and undercooked food before. But this was different. This was not a restaurant meal. This was an endurance exercise disguised as a buffet, seemingly designed to test how much disappointment the human mouth could endure before declaring independence. Had you blindfolded me, transported me thousands of miles east, and told me I was dining in a Soviet Gulag, i'd have found the explanation oddly comforting. At least then i'd understand why refrigeration, seasoning, and optimism were apparently bourgeois luxuries. Frankly, I suspect Gulag prisoners may have had more confidence in their rations. The fish was the warning. It had been boiled into submission and deposited in water so suspicious I wondered whether the kitchen had mistaken broth for whatever liquid happens to be nearby. The fish looked recovered from a forgotten municipal swimming pool. It did not look cooked. Then came the peanut chicken. The exterior was crispy, with the golden-brown armor of something fried in hot oil. Then I bit into it. Raw. Not slightly pink. Not questionable. Raw. The outside had apparently been deep-fried to escape the uncooked interior, while the two halves of the chicken lived separate culinary lives. It was as if the kitchen had deep-fried the concept of chicken while leaving the actual chicken completely uninvolved. One side had experienced the fryer. The other had been granted diplomatic immunity. Then there was the mayonnaise. It no longer resembled mayonnaise in any sense. It looked like melted American cheese that had been left beneath a heat lamp until it contemplated its own mortality. And then there was the flavor. Rancid. The buffet became an experiment involving the human gag reflex. It had not merely failed to serve mayonnaise. It had failed mayonnaise. The crab Rangoon was perhaps the evening's most challenging dish, because there was no crab and barely anything inside. It was a fried pastry shell containing a spiritual absence of filling. These were not crab Rangoon. They were crab Rangoon's abandoned housing. And then came the macaroni and cheese. Or what remained of it. This macaroni had been on the buffet so long I became convinced it had been placed there during a previous administration. The noodles had dehydrated beyond recognition. The cheese had receded into historical memory. I have seen macaroni and cheese become dry. I have never seen it become archaeological. This was a fossil with elbow noodles. It looked as though someone had taken a perfect mac, removed every trace of moisture and waited patiently for it to qualify as a building material. By this point, I wondered whether I had misunderstood the establishment. Perhaps this wasn't an all-you-can-eat buffet. Perhaps it was a historical reenactment titled, What If Lunch Were Prepared in a Soviet Labor Camp by Someone Who Hadn't Been Paid Since 1947? If so, congratulations. It's impressive. The experience had the bleak atmosphere of a Gulag ration: food present, nourishment implied, pleasure forbidden. Yet even that comparison feels unfair to the Gulag. Here, everything pretended to be something it was not. The fish pretended to be dinner. The chicken pretended to be cooked. The mayonnaise pretended to be cheese. The crab Rangoon pretended to contain crab. The macaroni pretended it had not been beneath a heat lamp since the Bronze Age. It was a buffet constructed upon lies. Every dish seemed to ask, How much worse can we make this? Every subsequent dish answered, Allow me to demonstrate. Eventually I stopped asking whether the food was good and asked whether it was alive. Every bite became a negotiation; every plate was a gamble. I arrived hungry and left with profound respect for plain rice, tap water, and going home. I entered as a customer. I left as a witness. I had seen it all: fish in mysterious water, chicken somehow both deep-fried and raw, mayonnaise transformed into rancid melted cheese, crab Rangoon stripped of crab, and macaroni and cheese excavated from an abandoned bunker. Some restaurants give you a dining experience. This place gives you a survival story. It looked upon the basic human expectation of please give me something edible and responded with culinary treachery. One star feels unnecessarily optimistic. If there were an option for i'd rather eat whatever the Gulag was serving, i'd select it with both hands, provided they could assure me the chicken was actually cooked. And if the Gulag itself ever opens a competing buffet, I sincerely hope they have the decency to put the chicken on the heat long enough to cook it. I'll be honest. We chose this place based on the name alone. We'd been on a Geocaching trip in the Frankfort area, and were looking for a place for lunch, saw the sign that said "Everything OK" and my wife and I both burst out laughing. I'm not sure why, but that sign STILL makes me laugh, a week or so after our visit! The staff was exceptionally friendly, kept our drinks topped off, and seemed to appreciate the face that we chose their restaurant to dine in. The buffet was large and well stocked, and one of the better small town Chinese Buffets I've stumbled across. It was typical "Americanized" Chinese food, still, it was hot and tasty. There were some American items on the menu, also. A nice selection of fruit and dessert, for us, it was the perfect break in the day. While I don't think anything pushes it to a 5 star review, I do think it's well above average and we'll certainly stop in when we're back in town. read more
