I wish there was a notes section when ordering online to indicate how much spice you want. Both the dishes were very mild in my opinion, and I would have liked to make note that I'd want it to be spicy. But other than that both dishes weren't bad. There wasn't any indication on whether the chicken dish would come with a side of rice, but the reviews mentioned it does come with rice which it did. The waiters are so kind and helped us decide exactly what we wanted which was nice when the menu is extensive as theirs! The food is authentic and delicious. I have sampled the majority of Chinese restaurants in the Lafayette/ West Lafayette area and have found Peppercorns Kitchen to be the absolute best. In the mood for Sichuan on a cold Sunday evening, my son and I perused Yelp and decided to give Peppercorns Kitchen a try. Even before we entered the dining room, we knew we would be getting authentic Chinese cuisine, because the dry erase menu board at the front of the restaurant was written exclusively in Chinese characters! There were only a couple of other occupied tables in the large dining room, so we were seated at a booth relatively quickly. The menu was expansive, and we took our time looking it over, but eventually we each picked Hot Stone Beef, with sides of rice, and waters to drink. Before tax and the otherwise unexplained "18% service charge" our bill was $49.87, which felt reasonable for what we got. The restaurant was massive in scale, with two dozen or more tables sprinkled across a warehouse-sized dining room. The walls and ceiling supports were painted a stark white, and other than a few stylized Chinese characters hanging on one side, the walls were nearly devoid of decoration. Red lanterns hung from the black-painted ceiling, contrasting with the gray tile floor to give the dining room its only real splash of colour. The men's restroom was even more utilitarian than the dining room, where rather than decoration, it instead had a giant, 2ft rectangular hole cut in the drywall, showing the bare wall studs and the back of the drywall of the room next door. In short order, our meals were delivered, and they looked and smelled fantastic! The hot stone bowls were large and well-filled with an assortment of tender beef, black mushrooms, green cabbage, and red peppers. My son and I both agreed that our dishes were perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of mouth-tingling Sichuan peppercorns, giving the whole package a delicious, spicy flavour! My only complaint about dinner was the lack of real table service. If we wanted a refill on our waters, we had to flag someone down. When we wanted boxes to take home our leftovers, we had to flag someone down. The only time waitstaff came to our table unbeckoned, was to wordlessly deliver our bill. PROS: generous portions, excellent flavours CONS: Service at the restaurant was so laughable, I would not have given even a 10% tip, so to be automatically charged 18% for service is, frankly, insulting. As a result, I am deducting a star from my review. Overall we found Peppercorns Kitchen to be Good, and feel that it has the potential to be a Great restaurant if it made radical improvements to the attentiveness and customer service skills of its wait staff. read more

It's been more than six years since I patronized and reviewed this restaurant. Our experience last time was less than great, so we found other Chinese restaurants to patronize, but my wife was never completely satisfied with the food she got. We never found another place that sold walnut shrimp in sweet sauce, which she had here and really liked. So we decided, after a lengthy absence, to revisit Peppercorn's. My wife, of course, had the walnut shrimp, and she said it was just as good as she remembered it, which was very good. Last time I had the shredded pork, mistakenly believing (from the yelp photo) that it was pure pieces of pork and no vegetables. This time, I had what I should have ordered last time: the orange chicken, which was much better. It was mostly chicken, but did have some broccoli in it, so it was reasonably appealing to the carnivore in me. Both meals came with steamed rice, an improvement over the last time, when they charged a dollar per person for rice. The incorrect yelp photo, by the way, is still there. Let the buyer beware. The last time we ate here, we dined in. Now, thanks to Covid, my wife and I don't eat indoors in restaurants any more, so we got takeout. One of the things I didn't like about our last visit was the mediocre service; I don't know whether that's improved, but, since we didn't dine in, it wasn't an issue this time. Our order was ready on time (in fact, it was waiting for me when I arrived) and was completely accurate. (Perhaps they still charge the extra dollar for rice if you dine in; I don't know.) In short: a definite improvement over our last visit. I'm glad we eventually returned, and we certainly won't wait very long before ordering takeout again. I'm only sorry that neither of my two favorite dishes (lemon chicken or pineapple chicken) are on the menu, but the crispy chicken in garlic sauce looks interesting. read more

A 5-star Chinese restaurant in Indiana is not the same as a 5-star Chinese restaurant in California. Now, with that in mind, Peppercorns Kitchen definitely fulfills my craving for authentic Chinese food here in West Lafayette. Although the lamb meat and beef meat can be quite tough/chewy, the flavor is still there and it does remind me of Chinese food in Cali. Being a college student that misses the comforting Chinese food at hime, I was pleased with everything we've ordered here, setting aside the chewy meats, as the savoriness was satisfying. This place completes my longing for authentic Chinese food, and I'll definitely be returning to try more of the menu items. There is an 18% automatic gratuity applied but not too big of a deal. Got Peppercorns Kitchen after SO long and the wait was worth it! I called them on phone to place my order and they let me know that my food will be ready in only 10-15 minutes (yay!). The pickup was contact-free and awesome. When I entered the restaurant, there were tables marked for pickup and you just had to find your order and pick it up! We got a Crispy Chicken with Garlic Sauce & a Chef's Special Stir Fried Chicken. I was a little worried that the dishes may be too dry or too oily - but none of that was true! I absolutely loved both the entrees, they were perfectly cooked & still warm!! They sent a rice box with each of the dishes. Their packaging was super nice so that if any of the sauces leaked, they would still be in the packet, which wouldn't seep through. The prices were a little bit steep, but definitely worth it because the quantity is a lot, so you can either share with multiple people or eat the food over multiple meals. Ordered from grub hub for on a random weeknight at 720 which I thought was a peak time and was pleased that it arrived by 8. I ordered Mongolian beef and unfortunately came out very sweet and oily and did not have the regular fried glass or rice noodles I have typically seen it come with The Kung pow chicken also was a little bit sweet and not spicy enough even though I chose and spicy and this came with a lot of wet sauce which I thought was a little interesting as well The dumplings which are really Gyoza were fine and the crab Rangoon's were par for the course If I were to order again I would choose something different the portions however are fair considering the prices the pricing is in line with other Chinese restaurant competition in the area read more

Our food was not good. The egg rolls were over done to point of being burnt on the outside.. Even the pot stickers were hard and not tasteful. The worse was our two entrees. Mine was the Mongolian Beef, which was stringy,tough and several pieces had to be spit out into a napkin. Plus I had no veggies except a plate full of onions.My wife's beef/vegetables were the same,beef tough,stringy and several pieces were not edible. Also the vegetables were few and far between. This was probably the most difficult rating I've ever given. I wrestled between 2 stars and 3 stars for hours, if not days. I really wish we could incorporate 1/2 stars. I arrived in West Lafayette at approximately 6:00 p.m on a Friday night. I was famished, having not eaten a morsel all day. I was craving Chinese, and turned to YELP for help. There were many options, but most weren't rated very high. Peppercorns hooked me with a bunch of appetizing photos. When I walked in, I had mixed feelings. The decor lacked something. I can't put my finger on it, but it definitely lacked something. On a positive note, the place was nearly packed, and I'd estimate 90% of the customers were Asian, so I figured it had to be authentic. I ordered the Crispy Chicken with Garlic Sauce. It came out on a twice-chipped plate (two huge chips). A chipped plate isn't as bad as a chipped glass, but its still an issue to me. As I mentioned earlier, I was famished. I spun the plate so I couldn't see the 2 chips, and dug in. On the menu this is listed as: Crispy Chicken with Garlic Sauce. It should be listed as: Salty Chicken with Oil. Way too much salt and way too much oil. Don't take my word, check-out my photo and you'll see the oil. I did not like it. But too be fair, I've never ordered Crispy Chicken anywhere in my life; so maybe this is exactly how it is supposed to taste. On a good note: service was awesome. There were tons of friendly, and attentive workers scurrying around the place. Some of the best service I've experienced anywhere. I wish I ordered a different dish, something I've tasted before. We lived in Beijing twice for 1 year each time. We LOVED the city and the food. We also attended Purdue - but - like a really long time ago - back when there was an extreme dearth of decent Chinese food in the area. So now we have a kid who is looking at colleges, so we took her to visit Purdue. We rolled into town a little late, but we had seen the menu for Peppercorns Kitchen, and we hoped that it would be worth the wait for our dinner. Just a short block or so from our hotel, I'm happy to report that the food was AMAZING! I mean even the "mixed vegetables" we ordered were all about vegetables we used to get in Beijing rather than those nasty tiny corn cobs American-Chinese restaurants throw in. Lotus root and black fungus (I know - the name is bad - but it really isn't that weird. You know the strips of black veggies in hot and sour soup? That is "black fungus" - just a kind of crunchy, yummy mushroom) with onions, peppers, broccoli, celery, jicama, carrots and button mushrooms! So good! AND they had Jing Jiang Rou Si (京酱肉丝) - which they call "Sautéed Shredded Pork." I don't think we've every had this dish outside of China - and it was fabulous! We also got 重庆辣子鸡 - Chongqing popcorn chicken - extra spicy - for us and an authentic noodle dish for our kiddo. Our party of three ordered takeout on Saturday night (1/27/24). Two of the meals reportedly were fine. Mine was so bad it was an embaerrassment to the one who had suggested Peppercorns. My order was Kung Pao beef. Many of the slices of meat were 3 inches long x 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide. Bite-size for a goat perhaps.The majority of the beef was as tough as shoe leather. One piece I couldn't even bite through and it was discarded. Make no mistake, my meal was flavorful. Were it not for the quality of the meat it would have been splendid. The meat was so bad I am reluctant to even honor this establishment with one star but in order to publish this review, a star rating is mandatory.
