Price is the largest selling point here, there are great deals for practically everything on the menu. The portions are very generous and you can probably get two meals out of a large fried rice brining the cost per meal to less than $5 which is a GREAT deal! The food is pretty good, but not the best you can get around either. The service is very fast too, I haven't ever waited too long while I was there. The ambiance is a little dated, but I'm fine with it because it reminds me of a lot of good family owned Chinese restaurants I've been too. I highly recommend giving it a try! Rather disappointed. We've eaten here many times over the years but hadn't been for a while. Today we finally decided to dine in for lunch. It's still a simple, hole-in-the-wall kind of place that's a little rough around the edges and that's fine. ...part of its charm. We got the orange chicken and garlic chicken lunch specials. Both plates looked pretty good. The garlic chicken and crab rangoon were fine. However, the fried breading of my orange chicken was so tough that the little plastic fork would just bend against it. I finally ate my first piece of the chicken and it was bone and/or cartilage. That happens sometimes with fried chicken so i spit it into my napkin and moved on. Then i saw a hair on my plate that was not ours. I brushed the hair aside and moved on. I tried to eat the chicken again. Each piece had that tough breading but the insides were also tough. Tough, hard, stringy, and chewy. Then i looked over at the Sriracha bottle. The tip was covered in some kind of black gunk. Came here on a sunday evening for some quick General Tso's. The location is good. They seemed busy, but most of it was for take out. My friend got the egg rolls and all that she had to say was - "The egg rolls leave much to be desired". I would have to agree. The General Tso's combo came with an egg roll and fried rice. Is it just me or has the quality of fried rice around town just gone down of the last few years. The chicken was good, but the rice was very bland and you could barely find any green peas or carrots in all the "yellow" rice. Prices are decent, but I've had way better chinese food for the same price. Service was very sloppy. We did not get any take out, which they specially asked us about. This is hands down my husband and I's favorite takeout on campus. When in college, we'd grab food from Happy China as often as once a week. Now that we're moving out of state, I'm so sad to say goodbye and it was on my list of must haves before we leave. I even ate Happy China on my wedding day. My boyfriend really wanted to go here for dinner the other day, so I found myself dragged along. I got their curry chicken plate, which was honestly pretty good. The rice was nice and soft and there was a good amount of curry coating the chicken and vegetables. The egg roll was practically dripping grease, so I felt pretty gross eating it but it got the job done. Our dishes were served on styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery, which was kind of wack, but whatever. The place was a little dirty. There are several good things: Huge portions, fresh ingredients, convenient, large menu selection, on-line ordering and a delivery option. Students in the area get a lot for their money. Unfortunately, the three star rating is because none of the tastes stood out. The Hot & Sour soup was loaded with great ingredients, but the broth was very bland--almost like dishwater. I didn't eat it. The egg rolls tasted fine, but scant in filling. The entrees could have used a little more zing (not just hot--but overall flavor.) Happy China has a lot of elements that could make it 4-5 stars. If they focused on more flavor, they could get there! read more

Happy China did not impress me. Located near other competitors, I thought they were going to be another option for my go-to Chinese food, since there are so many other options, but I was wrong. Their food tasted bland & they were not generous with their portion. I got their Chicken with Onion and what they actually gave me was "Onion and chicken" because it consisted of 80% onions and 20% chicken. The overall dish only tasted sweet from the sauce--not enough savoriness. I hope that they will improve this. read more

Came into town after 2200 and wanted a place that would deliver in time before everything closed down. This place came in with he highest rating compared to the competition. Placed an order for delivery in it arrived within 28 minutes. He order was easy to place and the delivery was speedy. Food was pretty good. Beef and broccoli and steamed dumplings. Price was fair. The only weird thing I've never seen before is they stapled the beef and broccoli container. Seems like an odd choice. But it held the container together. All in all, Happy China is a decent choice for typical (Americanized) Chinese food. Last night I wasn't feeling so well, so I decided to look for something quick to pick up for dinner. Having spent my early years in San Francisco, Chinese takeout has always been a fixture in my monthly dinner rotation, and is something of a comfort food to me- I always want hot & sour soup when I'm sick. I found the Happy China menu on hungryboiler.com and put in my order online. At the time, I actually thought I had ordered it for delivery, so in the "special instructions" box I put "Back Door". I had actually ordered takeout, and so Happy China called, texted, and left me a message to clarify. I appreciate that they took that effort rather than just letting me wonder why my food was never delivered. So I ended up driving there to pick it up. They were (understandably) a little delayed by the delivery/takeout confusion, and so I waited 5-10 minutes for my order. I wouldn't recommend eating in, as the dining room is pretty shabby and less than pristine in terms of cleanliness (although I wouldn't worry about food safety). On to the food: Hot & Sour Soup: Big portion with plenty of the typical vegetables, and a nice helping of mushrooms, which were fresh and well cooked. However, the flavoring was off for me, rather than the tangy sweet/sour that I look for in this soup, the only note I tasted was spicy. Steamed Dumplings: Came with 8 dumplings. These were not my favorite- the dough was very heavy and they didn't give us any dipping sauce! It's hard to mess up dumplings though, they were still very satisfying and I finished two. General Tso's Chicken- Generous portion size, well cooked (crispy) and a good bit of brocoli in there to help you deny the fact that what you are eating is fried chicken drenched in sugary sauce. Tasty. Mixed Vegetables with Tofu: Vegetables were fresh and well cooked, plenty of tofu chunks. Sauce was decent if not memorable. Overall, food was satisfying, portions were very large, and prices were great (all this for less than thirty dollars and my husband and I can easily get three meals out of it). I would go back to Happy China for takeout for ease of ordering and location and fresh, decent food (skip the soup next time!). read more

Delivery Time: 15 minutes from call to arrival (shockingly fast) Portions: Massive Price: inexpensive ($7.50 for entree+ spring roll+ fried rice) Taste: average I was pleased with my meal! I can't stress enough how huge the quantities were. Also, the delivery was lightning fast! Update: 2/8/15 I've ordered from Happy China a few more times. There are two positive qualities that I can't stress enough. #1: the portion size is overwhelmingly massive. #2: the delivery is very fast(maybe because I live right down the street.) It's important to recognize Happy China for what it is: Chinese fast-food. It is not a sit-down, fine-dining restaurant. It's a cheap in-and-out place. With that being said, the expectations for such an establishment must be held to a fast-food type of standard. The sauces probably come out of a can. Each individual order probably wasn't made by hand with the care and consideration that you would expect from a fine-dining establishment. It may lack some of the unique spices and flavors that could be expected at much more expensive restaurants. It's simple Chinese-American fast food. By that standard, Happy China knocks it out of the park. Under the category of $5-$10 Chinese-American takeout restaurants, Happy China is simply as good as you can get. 5-stars.
