She demands respect and attention from the kids (no staring off into space during this lesson), which is a nice change from the typical soft spoken and somewhat lackadaisical way people treat kids these days. If you're looking for a TRUE horse lesson and not just a pony ride where you sit and stare off into space while someone else does the work of leading the horse (although, they do that too)- this is a wonderful place! The horses are all great to work with, the ranch is beautiful and the prices are right. I highly recommend Horse Country Farm!!

There are paved paths and clear routes to trails and the beach. We ended up walking them down to the river, which had a lovely sandy beach, which was such a surprise! There were benches and tables down there, which I am sure are very coveted in the summer season. For a nice fall day, this was the perfect spot! I would love to come back here with some takeout and enjoy a lovely meal on the river. Very dog friendly, great views, and awesome amenities (water fountain, showers, trails, easy signage, bathroom). What more could you want!

From that first camp experience, we quickly signed up for lessons for her, myself, and my husband. Today, we happily board two horses and a donkey at the farm. The camps are a kid's dream--hands-on, fun, and thoughtfully run--and the events are creative and memorable (I made a clay mini of my horse!). The grass is suspiciously lush--either Bellevue sends its best landscapers, or money really does grow on trees here. Seaplanes hum in the distance, a reminder that some tech bros have evolved beyond Teslas (Though there was a Tesla who pulled in behind and in front of me while I was parked here and just took photos from their cars). I wanted to go horseback riding for my birthday. I found Stillwater Ranch by searching for trail…read morerides. I am so happy I did. This place was EXACTLY what I was looking for. The owners, Barbara and Dalton were so nice and down to earth, They are true animal lovers just like we are. They have over 20 horse, 3 dogs, 2 mules and they offer it all. This isn't your 1 hour trail ride up a dirt road and back. This ride is 3 to 4 hours long, through trees, down what looks like animal trails in the woods, you criss cross through the woods and clear cuts in the Skykomish River Valley then you head up mountain to this amazing lookout and have lunch. I rode a wonderful gelding named Bernie. Bernie's a Missouri Fox Trotter and he was super sweet. Chris rode Comet, she's a Tennessee Walker. Chris said she floated. You can see for miles up on "the rock". When you look down into the valley and see just how far you have ridden, you are amazed. Dalton said it is probably 5 miles. The lunch is amazing, it's from the Sultan Bakery and it is one of the best lunches I've had. Sitting up on the rock just me, Chris, and Dalton was so relaxing. We became instant friends. Stillwater Ranch offers a variety of rides that include river rafting, fishing, moonlight rides, overnight camping and much, much more. You can ride in all seasons - We are looking forward to a winter ride when the valley is covered in snow. They are even starting a wine dinner ride - woo hoo. The next time we need an equestrian fix, we will look to Stillwater Ranch to supply it.

This farm camp is so much more than just riding lessons. Kids spend hours learning real horsemanship--caring for the horses, doing groundwork, and understanding what it takes to run a farm. Lisa teaches them everything from horse anatomy and health to tack, equipment, and riding etiquette. They also help take care of the farm's chickens and ducks--looking after broody hens, meeting the chicks when they hatch, and collecting eggs from "their" birds. This program isn't for everyone. If you're looking for a once-a-week class where your child simply shows up, hops on a horse, rides for an hour, and goes home, this isn't that kind of program. It's more of an animal farm lifestyle camp, where kids are given real responsibilities and the freedom to learn through experience. Not all kids may do well with the independence and lack of constant parental supervision, but for those who enjoy hands-on learning and being part of a group it's an incredible opportunity. Do I pay so my kids can clean the horse stall? Yep! And it's worth every penny. Because work ethic, responsibility, and respect for animals (and others) are lessons that go far beyond the barn. But most importantly, my kids (even the teenager) can be just kids at the farm. With all the deadlines and pressure at school and organized sports, the farm is just "simple". Also, where else my kids can witness a tiny bird hatch right in front of them (sometimes on the palm of their hand!) and build a real connection with animals much bigger than themselves through patience, care, and trust.

The comprehensive experience of learning to care for and ride horses, combined with the various responsibilities of farm management, has fostered remarkable growth in her character. We've watched her develop greater independence, reliability, work ethic, and both physical and mental resilience, and we couldn't be more proud of who she is becoming. What began as horseback riding lessons has evolved into a formational experience that I now believe every child would benefit from. Lisa has transcended the role of instructor to become a true mentor and significantly positive influence in our daughter's life. Her guidance has helped our daughter flourish in ways that extend far beyond the barn. We feel fortunate to have Halo Hills in our community and wholeheartedly recommend it to parents looking to either introduce their children to horseback riding or to provide them with an environment that naturally builds the confidence, resilience, and life skills that will serve them well in all future endeavors.
