You could throw your chair in the fire, a donkey rode through the dining area and fireworks went off while a duo sang romantic Spanish tunes. The pirate would cut the top of the wine bottle off with a flourish of his cutlass and pour you a glass. Of course the food was great too. When we arrived in Menton we were told the restaurant had closed down and the property was for sale. We drove to the restaurant anyways and were thrilled to see it was still open by the Pirates son Ricardo who was closing up for the evening. And there was a menu with very reasonable prices. We made reservations for the following Friday for me and my teenage son and daughter. The location by the sea is unbeatable. We parked out front on the street in a reserved spot around 8:30. There was a couple there before us and we could see their shrimp and sardines (a specialty) were on the grill as we walked in. We started with sardines and shrimp, both delicious. My son had the grilled duck leg that was fall off the bone delicious. My lobster was grilled to perfection with an accompaniment of nicely spiced grilled eggplant and red pepper in olive oil. Our ice cream dessert was a perfect finish to a memorable evening even though we didn't throw our chairs into the fire.

9/10/15: This is the restaurant serving the Best Western Hotel Prince de Galles. You're probably…read morethinking oh, Best Western hotel huh? Let me tell you, this restaurant is as fancy schmancy as most any high-end hotel restaurant out there. It sits on the French Riviera beach, which is breathtaking in itself. We were completely surprised finding a restaurant like this here, especially since there's really only one or two other nice restaurants in the entire area. To be honest, yes, we found ourselves here after exhausting all other choices on Yelp, but we were extremely pleasantly surprised. Both my gf and I ordered from the "Discovery Menu" which were prix fixe selections that included a starter, main course, and dessert for 36.00 EUR each: 1. Fish Soup, Rouille Sauce and Fried Bread (Soupe De Poissons De Roche, Aioli Et Croutons): A traditional dish from Southern France. The soup was very very very flavorful. Never really had fish soup like this before--the soup was so thick with fish flavor that it actually felt a little like a chowder. There were no other solid pieces of anything in it though--just the super flavorful broth, though I imagine they blended something into it to make it that consistency. It was served with extremely hard crouton bread and mayo. The bread was so hard that it hurt to eat and we just used the table bread instead, which was excellent. Delicious. 10/10 2. Foie Gras, Candied Figues and Sweet Yeast Bread (+3.90 EUR) (Terrine De Foie Gras Grille): The foie gras terrine was one of the best we've had during our vacation. Very rich, of course, but with plenty of fat at the sides and marbled in. The plating was beautiful, dried flowers and all. The candied fig was perfect, but unfortunately the brioche-like bread was overly dense and dry. 8/10 3. Lamb Shank Braised, Mashed Potatoes with Truffles Flavour: The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked, and the potatoes were great. Unfortunately I cannot remember much beyond that. 7/10. 4. Iberic Porc Selection "Pluma de Pata Negra", Deep Fried Potatoes: My gf believed this was the best "pork chop" she has ever had, and that's saying something. Very juicy inside and crispy on the outside. Amazing sauce too. The fries were so well fried that she couldn't stop eating them, and again, that's quite remarkable. 10/10 5. Pavlova Aux Fruits Rouges: Looked beautiful, but simple in construction: an egg white meringue cookie with various candied berries on top. Tasted great. 7/10. 6. Cannelloni Cremeux Au Citron De Menton, Nage De Fruits Exotiques: Kinda like a fancy Italian cannoli, but covered in sesame seeds. The shell was quite crispy and well made. It sat on top of a fruit puree which was quite refreshing itself. Definitely Asian-influenced. I personally hate sesame, but I can appreciate their skill and expertise in preparing this one. 7/10. Having two 10/10's is quite remarkable if you've read my other reviews. I think given the excellent food and beautiful seating outside by the beach, I think this place is quite exceptional. 5/5 #french #france
