Evening Star Kennels should have higher ratings, in my opinion. I'm so glad that although I read most, if not all the reviews, I chose to disregard them and just let my gut tell me if I should move forward in getting a pup from this kennel. Evening Star was celebrating their 40 year anniversary and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get another Vizsla at an outrageous promotion. My first Vizsla was adopted from a family who wanted to give her up and even then, I don't have background info on my first V. I adopted her at 6 months and she is now 7 years old. The pup from Evening Star would come with health clearances from both sire and dam. Another review mentioned their photocopies as being questionable, but for me, that didn't matter. I imagine other breeders would just photocopy their documents as well. I read a couple of reviews deterring people from getting pups from Evening Star because their dog developed cancer. I pray that none of my pets get this, but I even have family and friends who got/had cancer. Speaking with a representative from South Coast Vizsla Club, they confirmed that all breeds can develop cancer. (I had contacted several Vizsla organizations including Vizsla Club of America when I was researching breeders.) I did ask Gaila even though they were celebrating their 40 year anniversary, why such an amazing promotion? She said their anniversary was July 26, if I remember correctly, but also they were taking a 3 weeks vacation and she preferred that she found good homes for the puppies before they left. Although she had people to care for all her dogs, she thought best to get homes for the puppies before their trip. Lastly, Gaila sends you home with a bunch of goodies for your pup along with some instructions. For me, she even included a couple of things for my 7 yr old V at home. I felt like I was treated like someone getting one of her pups at her regular rate! My boyfriend and I adopted a Vizsla puppy from Evening Star Kennels this past week. He is such a sweetheart and so well behaved for a puppy. We have both wanted a vizsla for a long time and when we saw the anniversary sale post on their Instagram account, we reached out to Gaila right away. She explained the process to us so we filled out our application online and she reached out to us after she had time to review our responses. We made an appointment as soon as possible, had time to experience the puppies personalities for about 10 minutes, and picked out our perfect puppy for adoption. They gave him a quick bath while we got the paperwork filled out and they gave us some helpful information on how to clean his ears, etc. Gaila gave us a blanket, a toy, and a few other little items to help Scout feel comfortable his first few days at home. We were also able to purchase a bag of dog food from Evening Star Kennels and they even loaded the giant bag into the trunk for us. We took Scout home and read all the super helpful information Gaila provided in the red folder of paperwork on how to train your puppy, supplies to make sure you have, etc. Overall, this has been an amazing experience and we already love our sweet, snuggly puppy! My Vizla, Einstein, originally named "Watson" by Gaila, was purchased in 2019. Gaila was very knowledgeable about Vizlas and educated me on how to take of him. He just turned 3 and he is a joy. Please be aware when purchasing your puppy from Evening Star. My family had to put down our extremely loving 6 year old Vizsla due to lymphoma. Lymphoma in dogs is genetic and upon reading other reviews, I can see our dog wasn't the only one experiencing this type of cancer. When multiple people come forward about the death of a young dog, you would think Evening Star would stop breeding this genetic line of dogs. My family is devastated by this loss and I would like to bring awareness to anyone considering purchasing a puppy from Evening Star. I got my vizsla from evening star in 2015 or so. Best dog ever but unfortunately she developed lymphoma at age 4. It was very aggressive and even with he chemotherapy she only had a life span of 1 to 6 months. Everyone knows how costly it is to treat canine cancer but I did it anyway until her quality of life became unacceptable. My vet said to let the breeder know about the diagnosis because it is important to know since lymphoma runs in certain breeds. I did but I wasn't satisfied that she took the diagnosis seriously. I still miss my Zoey but I won't go back to Evening Star because I would be worried about something like this happening again. read more

I fell in love with our first Vizsla 13 years ago. Aja came from EveningStar . Gaila was helpful and wonderful. I would call regarding vaccine needs, and what was needed for routine vet visits. She was always helpful. Due to my husband and my work schedule, we even paid for the trainer service. Aja was our girl, well trained, even temperament and ZERO Health problems. Just a Velcro fun loving girl, who was included and invited in every aspect of our lives. She welcomed the spouses my children picked, and the newborn grandkids. Aja was Our empty- nest beautiful elegant girl. I was asked all the time where did I find such a perfect girl. I referred many friends, who are now happy V owners. Aja passed away in March, she was in my arms. 13 perfect years. No hip issues, no organ issues, no temperament issues. I wrote Gaila to inform her and sent pictures of my sugar face. She wrote me back. Our house was so empty! We were starting quarantine, without our girl. I called Gaila for her advise on getting a new Vizsla, I wanted another female with similar temperament. Gaila remembered my girl! She had a pup from a fantastic breeding with 3 other breeders/ co owners. She said " Paris " was very similar to my sweet Aja. I drove up, and was so surprised and amazed to meet little Paris. She had been trained, and we were already bonding. Paris and I drove an hour and a half to get home. She didn't make a mistake or throw up. I stopped a couple times for her. It's not Gaila's fault if a puppy throws up, or poohs. You have a living breathing young puppy. Bring a crate, if you are going to flip out about a mistake in your car. Paris loves to get in my car. ( during quarantine, we would get out of the house to go see stuff from a far) Paris loves it! She is absolutely another sweetie, and she is gorgeous. We are life jacket training now... for paddle board rides. One step at a time. I feel people are expecting a robot perfect pup, when they pick up and pay a Breeder. I feel people are also thinking the Breeder is going to " talk" you into something, and spend an entire day with you. You need to know your stuff, After welcoming this super smart dog in your life, you might need assistance to find your patience. It's worth it. That is not Gaila's job. Frustrations come with puppies and training misunderstanding. If you let a young puppy run too much, they'll get tired for you, but you'll have acl, and hip issues. Gaila includes everything you need to read and follow to have a healthy dog. If you don't follow it, don't blame someone else, blame yourselves. She includes the pedigrees, so you can see the Grand Champions, champions and the cross breeding into other Vizsla lines. She walks you through the important stuff to fill out. That's her job. You are to make the pup a healthy home. You can not leave a V in the backyard, or a crate all day. Don't get this breed if you are looking for a dog to entertain you when you want it. They need to be touching you most of their puppy days. This dog is like a child. I see reviews regarding Golden Retrievers. These are older reviews. A lot of Golden Retrievers in our large dog park down in San Diego County have ACL surgeries, even double ACL. I witness the launching of tennis balls for hours with puppies. Riding bikes with young pups running by the bike. It's a shame. As the golden and Cream Goldens are having serious paw ISSUES and nail splitting. VARIOUS cancers and growths as well. In my area, they are willing to pay for chemo, surgeries and second surgeries. It's a tough breed, because I think people are wanting very white dogs, or pocket sized Goldens, less fur, etc. We have one gal who waited a year for her golden, and traveled to the east coast for a big healthy Golden. She has Huge Big furry 100lb males! I respect Gaila for stopping the breeding of Goldens. It is a breed with issues. They are lovely, but not my choice. Don't figure those reviews into a Visit to EveningStar for a Vizsla pup. Do your research and don't waste someone's time window shopping and not being serious. I didn't have to pay for a reservation, or dog viewing fee? That's just not true. I WAS willing to pay for our special lifetime friend from an AKC recognized Breeder. We recently lost our beloved Vizsla Guy of 12 years and were researching Vizsla breeders in Southern, CA. I inquired about a male Vizsla puppy and the owner emailed me back and had one available. I called her a couple of hours later and she was short and rude to me, but said she would send photos. I emailed her two times within the next few days following up as I never heard back, and got a generic response via email saying there were only female puppies remaining. I do not conduct business this way and we will be getting our Vizsla elsewhere. Not to mention $2,500 is a rip-off!! read more

We have a female Vizsla who is dying now from a metastasized sarcoma, that she developed at 8yrs. old. She is now 9, and we will have to put her down any day now because she is miserable and in pain. We've never had to put down an animal/family member before in our lives. We love our Vizsla, Zoe, with all of our hearts! She is the most amazingly beautiful soul. When we contacted Evening Star Kennels about Zoe and our concerns over her cancer, via email - they couldn't even be bothered to respond to us!! Our neighbors across the street from us also had a male Vizsla that they purchased from Evening Star Kennels, who died from a mast cell tumor on his leg. These Evening Star Vizslas are dying from cancers and other serious health issues far before they should be! People need to know about this, and also the uncaring dismissive attitude at the puppy mill that is Evening Star Kennels! We have pet insurance, thankfully - but still we have spent over $50,000 dollars in trying to keep Zoe alive through chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation treatments - you name it! All to NO avail. As we watch her suffering and knowing that we will have to put our very beloved furry family member down soon - we are experiencing a plethora of negative emotions regarding this breeder and Zoe's horrible situation now. We purchased our Vizsla in the fall of 2012...He is our third one we've owned and by far the best personality! The downside was he had giardia for the first 6 months we had him, followed by allergies (food and environmental) and droopy eyelids (a breeding issue). Also had growths on his tail that were benign, but has forever changed the look of it. Expensive is an understatement, but we love him! More than likely, we will not get our next V from ESK. I purposely held off on my review to really see how she would turn out after the excitement of our new dog wore off. Beware: this breeder also uses the name GoldStar Kennels. My hope is that this review will save a prospective vizsla owner from the pain and heartbreak that my husband and I have suffered over the past several months. We were completely and totally in love with our baby, Rudy. He died two weeks ago from three separate congenital heart defects at 8 months old. Whether his issues could have been detected before he came home is unknown. How the situation was handled after his health problem was discovered leaves me without words... There are so many things looking back that were red flags. When we went to pick Rudy up, he was covered in dandruff and he had horrible gas. We immediately took him to the vet who told us he was unable to process the food he was on. We switched him to a higher quality food and his skin and digestive problems cleared. This is something that the breeder should have noticed and attended to before Rudy was sent home with us. It was a fluke that Rudy's heart problems were detected. He contracted giardia and we took him to the vet to receive fluids and antibiotics. At the same time, our vet discovered that Rudy had a serious heart murmur (grade 5). A month later, Rudy came down with another stomach bug and needed to return to the vet for more fluids and antibiotics. At that point, the vets drove it home that his heart sounded very bad, and we needed to have him checked by a vet cardiologist immediately. When we called Gaila to tell her the news, she had no concern. If anything, she seemed burdened by our call. My husband told her that she needed to reimburse us for the cost of Rudy as stated in our contract as we were looking at several thousand dollars of vet bills. She said she needed "proof" and that her own vet needed to verify what we were telling her. Our vet's opinion and word (we go to a very well known practice of 3 vets, all whom were in agreement and ready to speak with Gaila). A few days later, we drove to Pomona to have Rudy's heart scanned by a man Gaila recommended (so he could "verify" the problem). He did verify and she did send us a check. This put a very, VERY small dent in what the total costs of this whole ordeal has been. A few weeks later we saw one of the the best vet cardiologists in LA (luckily our vet is well connected). Rudy was found to have 3 separate congenital issues, each one serious in its own right. It was impossible to swallow this information. He was put on a medication to lower his blood pressure and a mix of several other medications to lessen his irregular heartbeat so he could get to a point where he could be put under anesthesia. It took two months of switching medications, watching poor Rudy suffer from uncomfortable side effects and visits to the cardiologist every two weeks that ranged from $200-500 each visit. We fully trust that he was in the best hands possible as far as his veterinary care. Rudy was declared ready a month ago for his surgery (balloon valvuloplasty) which was the best chance he had to live a healthy, normal life. The surgery is long, extremely expensive, and about 80% of dogs with Rudy's condition end up with drastic improvements following the surgery. We were hopeful in every possible way, we lived for the day he would be cleared for surgery, and losing him was an impossibility. Rudy did not make it through the surgery. Because of the way his heart was formed, when the balloon was inserted into his valve, an artery burst and he bled. They were unable to stop the bleeding, despite countless attempts. We are still struggling to process what happened. We assumed Gaila would want to know the outcome of Rudy's operation, but she never responded to our messages. She did not even have the courtesy or decency to send her condolences or share any of our grief. Worse, she would not allow us to contact the other owners of puppies in Rudy's litter who may also have a similar defect and if left untreated, they will die within a year. Furthermore, she will most likely breed the dogs who passed the congenital issues again, despite this being reckless and irresponsible in every way. Now, in the aftermath of this horrible event, we have spoken with several vizsla organizations, kennels, and breeders and have found that this breeder is well known within the community to be irresponsible, and to produce puppies with health problems. If only we had known. We will do whatever we can to keep others from having an experience like our own. That said, after having the short time with Rudy that we had, we are vizsla owners for life. We wanted longer with him, but never would have wanted any other. He was the best. We have done so much research at this point and know that the next puppy we get will come from a responsible breeder who treats each puppy like her own. So don't get me wrong, we LOVE our Vs and will do what we can to extend their lives without suffering and pain. Our Vs, two "littermate" sisters, so Gaila says but they look and act nothing alike. I asked Gaila to address my concerns about having two growing female sisters in the same household. What I thought was a consultation with my girls' breeder was taken as confrontation with Gaila, and she "cut" off communication with me. One of our 7 year old V's has severe hip arthritis secondarily caused by hip dysplasia, which wasn't noticeable until AFTER the "two year" guarantee. Most of the hip issues don't come out until after they are "fully" grown, hence two years old. Her sister V limps awkwardly around and I am sure will have some hip problems, too, but in Gaila's defense, I haven't confirmed her gait issues. So my pup isn't your V, but who is Mommy and Daddy V of a V bought from Gaila at Evening Star Kennels? I am telling you so you can think twice before buying from Gaila. Don't even go there! All V puppies are cute and irresistible and are seemingly healthy puppies, but I advise you get your Cute V or other pup from someone else, she has no interest in legacy of her pups, but will hide behind biblical phases. read more

Ok, my experience was not horrible but it definitely opened my eyes to what a breeder (ahem, puppy mill), should not be. My boyfriend had contacted Gaila because she is listed on the AKC website, so he felt she was reputable. She tells him that she has a 3 yr old male up for adoption (we were apparently the first people she told about him). Anyways, my boyfriend and I decided to go meet the dog thinking we would adopt him as it is really hard to find a Vizsla puppy right now. Well, we show up and were greeted by these amazing, friendly dogs. One of them jumped right into our car! It was adorable. Gaila was kind to us, yet very condescending to a couple she was on a phone call with when we first arrived. She invited us into her office which is where we stayed the entire 1.5hr visit. She had some amazing, friendly dogs, not going to lie. BUT, when she asked her husband to bring in the 3 yr old, this dog came CRAWLING into the office with his tail between his legs, looking like he was about to be scolded and scared to death. He put his front legs on me, had his face right near mine, and just stared out the window. It was honestly scary, not knowing if he'd bite or not. He eventually got down, but something was off. He would not accept a treat, wag his tail, and looked petrified for the first 45min. She did bring in a sweet girl to help ease him, and he eventually started playing with us, licking us, etc. But he smelled, and we learned that in his 3 yrs of life, he was not potty-trained nor was allowed to sleep in the house with the other 27 dogs she had. He was only a kennel dog and was used for breeding a few times. Why??? These dogs are such social creatures and need human interaction and love!!!! The abuse this dog has endured, I can't even imagine. When she mentioned she was selling him for the cost of a puppy ($2800!!!) because of his bloodline, we thought she was joking. Even paying that much for a Vizsla pup is too much. When she said she would have a litter available each month, that's when we realized this is essentially a glorified puppy mill. Sure, she shows her dogs at AKC events, but that does NOT mean she is a reputable breeder. Please do your research and not count on the AKC to point you in the right direction. After that visit, we hopped on yelp and saw everyone else's reviews and it made so much sense. If I had the money, I would have bought the 3yr old to take him to a shelter where he could find a loving home. That poor dog does not deserve the life he has. All she is doing is in-breeding her dogs and selling them for a pretty penny. Please do NOT go to her. read more

After reading the above reviews, I'm astonished - and saddened - by how closely some mirror my own experience with Evening Star Kennels. My wife, two sons and myself became interested in getting a Wiemeriner puppy during the spring of 2008. The puppy was to be a companion for my mother-in-law. She lives alone and although in her late 60's, "Granny Kaye" is very spry. Evening Star was our first contact with a breeder and after our phone conversation we were very impressed with Gaila. It was the last time we felt that. Within a month Granny Kaye had a beautiful female Wiem puppy she named Karma. Granny Kaye and Karma were inseparable from then, until Karma died three weeks ago. The problems started right from the beginning: The wrong birth date on the paperwork, the dandruff and skin problems, terrible diarrhea, and Karmas' gas problem became legendary. The second year it got worse: Rampant toenail fungus, mouth sores and she seemed to stop growing. Karmas' third year was when the real nightmare started: the first of three tumors, loss of appetite, frailness, very slow healing and even the slightest scratch left a scar. The vet bills had now passed $12,000 and Granny Kaye was considering taking in a border to offset the monthly vet bills. We decided to take Karma to a well known vet in Orange County. It was here we learned about Addison's disease and what we could expect in the near future. Before we left his office he asked if we got Karma through a breeder. I said we did and he asked. "Let me guess, was it Evening Star Kennels?" By the end of that conversation I realized the truth about all the shoddy / missing paperwork, unreturned calls and endless health problems that plagued Karma were no coincidence or string of bad luck. In her fourth year Karma died in surgery. To make a buck these people create dogs destine to a lifetime of pain and misery, immeasurable heartache to those who make these dogs a family member and a devastating financial burden in vet bills. If Karma is more that just the name of our poor puppy, these people should be worried. read more

We could not be any happier with our now 21/2 year old Vizsla from Evening Star Kennels! My husband and I have had many dogs and the puppy we got from Gaila is the most beautiful, smart, gentle soul that we could ever imagine! We literally paid over $200 to just view a puppy for 5 minutes! Deposit was not fully refundable even though the breeder was not out of anything when we backed out of the deal, (within 5 days). The pups were still marketable for another 4 weeks and the breeder could easily find another customer. What the breeder collected and kept was excessive and a reasonable, ethical person would have returned the full deposit given all circumstances. Save your money and read the reviews first. read more

When my husband and I found out we were going to have to put down our beloved 12-year old Yellow Lab, we started looking for a dog to fill the hole in the family. She was our 9-year old Golden's best friend and big "sister" and we were all heartbroken. GoldStar Kennels is also Evening Star Kennels. My fiance and I picked up Pre on October 1, 2010. We were told by Gaila that he was born on 3/20/10 and his brother was just bought the week prior. We had never gone through this process before and put too much trust in the breeder, Gaila. She said she would not AKC certify him but we could do and pay the registration. She also told us he already had his 3 year shots. We corrected her, as Pre was only 6 months and should not have had these. She told us it was her mistake and he only received his first year shots. When we picked up Pre, he was in a large cage with 2 other Weimaraners. We looked around and could see much smaller cages on the south end. We were so excited to finally get Pre that we didn't think anything of it at the time. Later, we found out that the puppies were kept in these small cages and never interacted socially with other dogs or even with the breeder. Gaila told us to keep Pre on Kirkland food. This was our first mistake. Pre's gas was so terrible. She told us that was due to nerves and the environment was still new. After a couple of weeks, Pre stopped eating, had trouble digesting food and was throwing up on our morning walks. We brought him to a vet and found out that the Kirkland food cannot be digested by these puppies and unfortunately made Pre very sick. I decided to take a closer look at all of the information Gaila had given us and noticed on his shots slip that it stated his birthday was 1/1/10. It also stated that he did indeed receive his 3 year shots. The box asking if the dog had been microchips was also checked. The vet check twice and no micro chip was found in Pre. I called Gaila to speak with her about the shots and she said that she must have given us the wrong slip. We also inquired about the date of birth and she didn't have a good answer for us. She said she would look at her paperwork and verify his birth date, as well as faxing us over the correct slip for Pre's shots. Gaila has never faxed over a new slip or information on the clinic that gave the shots. She didn't have an answer for us about the microchip and told us that Pre was born on 3/20/10.... Of course she could not/would not fax over any documentation confirming this. Pre had extreme separation anxiety. This was from being locked in a cage/crate outside for the first 6 months of his life, never being socialized or cared for. After doing more research and participating in SC Vizsla events, we have been told that Evening Star Kennels is pretty much a small puppy mill. This broke my heart but was still so happy to have saved Pre. I would never recommend this breeder. read more

Stay away from Moonlight Vizslas, the owner is an angry person who feels she can tell you how to raise your animals and will chastize you for asking relevent questions. Do not recommend this breeder. We love our vizsla, BUT there were so many red flags when we picked him up! There were 4 adult dogs on the property that had been debarked! She used to breed weimaraners but would not even engage in a conversation about this breed which I found very odd. She gave us so many cheap products to go along with our 5500 dog purchase it was somewhat absurd. Cheap wet food for the road. Our dog supposedly was trained for 4 months. He had such severe separation anxiety that he busted through 2 types of crates. He was not house broken and had loose stools. This breeder houses a puppy mill and it hurts me that we supported her practice. The only sincere person on the Property was Sal. I agree with previous reviews that she tends to hide behind biblical phrases and is totally in it for the $$$$$ read more

Like the other reviews, I did not do enough research and evening star was the only member in area of the golden retriever club of America. I love my two Goldens but we have had constant health issues from the get go. My male is allergic to almost everything and has been on prednisone so much that his own steroid system has shut down (Addison disease). My female had a bad urinary tract infection and needed to be on antibiotics for 3 months when she was a pup. Then developed thyroid problems and has been on that medicine for 4 years. They just turned 8. As with all the their reviews I love them dearly but I would never recommend evening star to my worst enemy. When we drove in I had a bad feeling but did not listen to it. If you are looking to own a Golden please, please look elsewhere read more

We purchased two golden retrievers many years apart from this breeder. Both puppies had severe case of worms when we brought them home despite being told they had been dewormed. Both dogs had severe skin and food allergies. Both had thyroid issues. And both died or will have died of aggressive cancer. Our first Golden developed a brain tumor at 7 years old and died same week diagnosed after suffering 17 seizures in a single day. Our second beloved Golden was just diagnosed with melanoma when getting her teeth cleaned and given 2 months to live. She is 10. Wee were naive to think the high costs charged by this breeder meant it wasn't a puppy mill. While The personality of our beloved pups was amazing, the health issues caused us thousands of dollars and devastating heartbreak. Thankfully we got our third Golden from a different breeder and he is healthy as a horse at age 7 and has had NO health issues. Just goes to the vet for shots! We bought a beautiful golden retriever female from this kennel and she is 10 years of age and still plays and acts like a young girl. My husband and I felt that she might need a buddy to help her stay active and happy and since she has always enjoyed the company of other dogs. We desided to return to Evening Star since we had such a great experience last time and we received a warm welcome and even a returning client discount. Our new boy Charlie is absolutly adorable and 16 weeks of age happy and playful. He got a complet bill of health from the vet. He let me know that we really got a quality pup. I highly recommend this breeder to anyone who wants a beautiful, healthy puppy. read more

I've been waiting years to write this review because every time I think about my Vizslas I get very sad and upset but it's time because Vizslas are becoming more popular......Our first interaction with evening star was in 2007, my husband bought me my first Vizsla, Sequoia. She was the most beautiful, athletic, smart and the sweetest girl. When we first brought her home we noticed she had horrible gas like other reviews have mentioned, come to find out, it was the Kirkland food Gaila told us to keep feeding her. We switched over to other food and she got better. Then when she was only five years old she got a bump on her leg, within a week it grew double its size. We took her to the vet and come to find out it was a type of tissue sarcoma, cancer. She had a very aggressive type of cancer and it was terminal. Within a week she stopped eating and she started stooling on herself. She was in so much pain and miserable that only after two weeks of diagnosis we had to put her down at the young age of five. It was absolutely devastating to my husband and I, she went too quickly and without warning. We contacted Gaila to let her know that this happened and to make her aware. She responded by saying she had never had any health issues with her dogs and this must've been some anomaly............We took her for her word and when we were ready we went back to evening star to get another Vizsla. I should've known that day about all the red flags I had seen but I was blind to them at the moment. I noticed there was a Vizsla in a kennel that she mentioned was returned because it was aggressive and they were trying to re-train the dog, make it less aggressive. 1st off....aggressive..?? I have never met an aggressive Vizsla, they're the complete opposite. I brushed it off and we took our beautiful Brandy home. After having Brandy home for a month, we noticed the horrible gas again. Then she started growing a lump on the bridge of her nose. My husband and I got worried because that's how it started off with Sequoia. We took her to the vet immediately and they diagnosed her with a cyst due to the fact that she had a congenital malformation on the bridge of her nose. Essentially the bridge and bones of her nose didn't fuse completely during development. We again contacted Gaila, she seemed bothered. She wanted to know if we were asking to return the dog, we said no we just thought it was IMPORTANT for her to know that we had 2 dogs from her with problems. Like I mentioned she seemed bothered and not concerned. Brandy ended up having surgery to remove the cyst, thankfully it was benign. Before the surgery I also noticed she started baring her teeth and growling at me every time I tried to get her out of her crate or put her in her crate. She lunged at me a couple times as well and tried to bite me . I immediately tried to correct the behavior but she persisted. My husband who's the dog whisperer and who has trained many dogs in his life tried to dominate her and make her submit and every time she growled. He worked with her every night. It got to the point where we were in denial, "it only happens around her crate etc". After she was a year old we decided to get another Vizsla but this time we had made up our minds, we were not going back to Evening star. The vet mentioned their problems were most likely breeding related and we had that impression ourselves. We found another breeder and we spoke of the aggressive behavior from Brandy. Our new breeder was shocked and said you only need to correct this type of behavior once with a Vizsla and they should learn. We went over our methods of training, correcting etc with her and she said we were doing everything right. Anyway our Brandy ended up biting my father in law when we were out of town, she drew blood this time. It was awful but my father in-law brushed it off because he's a dog lover and we kept trying,we did everything to correct this behavior. Then one day she bit my husband (who's considered the "alpha") it was a bad bite, she opened up his hand. This sadly was the last straw, If she was willing to bite her alpha male and did not learn to correct her behavior after a year of consistent correction/training we knew she was never going to learn and one day she would bite someone else, god forbid our kids or someone else's kids. The vet and us knew there was something neurologically wrong with her....we had no choice but to put her down for fear she'd bite again. I can't even tell you how horrible it was to do this, how devastating. Our hearts again were broken and our poor kids had to deal with another dogs passing away too soon. I loved those two girls so much and we don't regret having them but I'm saddened they had their problems and had to leave us soo soon. I am also upset at evening star for their irresponsible breeding and practices. I'll never recommend them. Trust me there are better breeders my current one is the best. read more

I purchased my Vizsla "Frisky" on Valentines day in 2015. He was healthy until October 2016 when he started vomiting and having diarrhea on a daily basis. His diet was changed thinking it was food allergies to no avail. He eventually went to a specialty vet. and was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). His parents were Pierce and Faith. Frisky is a very loving dog but this disease has really changed his (and my) quality of life. He is now on about 6 medications a day and while the vomiting is now controlled the diarrhea persists. There is no cure for this disease so you are left with trying to manage it... For Life. The cost as you can imagine is through the roof. Had I read any of the Yelp reviews for this breeder I would have selected someone else. read more

We recently just went through the process of getting our new Vizsla puppy and decided to go with Evening Star Kennels. We have owned several Vizslas in the past and absolutely love the breed. We interviewed many different breeders including Evening Star. From the beginning Gaila was very easy to work with and allowed us to take our time and do our research. We visited the property with our close friend (who is a Veterinarian in San Diego). We were pleased with the facility and the pups. We got an opportunity to meet the puppy's parents and they were very well cared for. As most breeders you could tell they were very passionate about the process and how they do things. Some might be intimidated by this but we were looking for that in a breeder. Part of my research was looking at online reviews. The yelp status for Evening Star had me concerned but noticed the reviews on google and Facebook were very positive. I wanted to make sure those positive reviews weren't fake so I contacted families that made those reviews. 90% of them returned my message. They were all VERY positive and shared their stories with me (as well as pictures of the dogs over the years). This gave us the comfort we needed and finalized things for our puppy. We also decided we wanted to enroll our puppy in Evening Star's training program. We have never done that before but figured since the training is on the property it wouldnt be dramatic for our puppy. We meet Saul the trainer and he explained the process in detail. Finally after a month of training we received our puppy (Saul delivered her and walked us through the training steps). Needless to say we were shocked on how well trained she was. We have a 2 year old and 4 year old so the training has been vital introducing her to our family. She came crate trained, dog door trained, knows sit/down, no bite, no beg, her name, etc. She immediately slept throughout the night and only had two minor accidents in the house. Both Saul and Gaila have been great post delivery off our puppy. They are there to answer any questions we might have. Overall I couldn't be happier with the breeder and our new family member. We plan on getting another Vizsla in a couple years and there is no doubt we will be going through Gaila again. read more

When we bought our Sterling, one of the cutest Weimaraners I've ever seen from Gaila, we were the happiest people on earth. This is back when they used to breed Weims, I don't think they do anymore. Like Alison S. said, I wish we would have done more research before hand. I'm going to make this short, our beloved Sterling died from Bone Cancer at 6 1/2 years old. However, he suffered from many maladies in the 6 1/2 years he was here on Earth. We spent, GET THIS, $18,000 on Vet bills during that time. And we were seeing specialists for everything from brittle toe nails (broke 12 nails in that time, from the cuticle and needed Dr. care) to skin problems. And, no, it wasn't a diet problem either. We home cooked for him, chicken, rice, green beans, yogurt and coconut oils, plus other stuff I can't remember right now. Same story as above, Gaila could give a damn, even "put-off" that we were bothering her. The ONLY thing that mattered to her was the $1000 we paid for our Sterling, after that, we were strangers. And once again, like the other posting, once we started talking to Vets, Friends for Pets Weimaraner Rescue and a few others, they all were aware of Gaila's Evening Star/Goldstar atrocities. As a matter of fact, when we went to Friends for Pets Weim Rescue, we started to tell her our "Sterling Story", and she stopped up in mid sentence and said "Evening Star huh?". CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Gaila's down near San Diego, and FFP is in Sun Valley, yet FFP was VERY FAMILIAR with Evening Star. DO NOT EVEN ENTERTAIN THE IDEA OF THIS PLACE!!!!! WARNING!!!!!! read more

Wow,I cant believe some of the reviews on here. I bought my Vizsla from Gaila about 4 years ago. He has been great,! He is very healthy no issues what so ever, so smart & sweet. He trys to sleep between my wife & I almost every night. She will kick him off & he will sneak up on my side of the bed and lay right next to me all night. Bought a 3yr old Golden, retired breeding dog. Drove up to Evening Star, questioned immed to ourselves why they didnt bother to ask us anything about ourselves. We bonded with our golden immediately but the price was twice as high as quoted over the phone prior. By this time we bonded and just couldnt drive away without her. She was car sick the whole way home, vomited and salivating the 2 hour drive. We realized then she had never been on a car ride. When we brought her into our home, she ran into the sliding glass door,not breaking it, ooch...obviously she had never seen one before Definetely not potty/house trained, though they said she was, crate trained obviously is not close to potty train... 3 months to house train and were still not there. Our darling addition continues to hide in corners of the house, but is starting to come to us after 3 months, we still have to put the leash on in the home for her to come with us into another room or go to eat. The positive to this is that she is a fantastk outdoor dog that is obvious as to how she grew up As far as our vet is concerned(very concerned)this 3yr old golden has only received one shot in her three years...When i called evening star, she disagreed but stated she didnt have any records to send to us. We have now changed her food from the cheapest food they gave her to a nutritious higher quality, her coat is not shedding now... Thank god we rescued her from this breeder!!! read more

I don't know why, but my last Review about Goldstar/Evening Star Kennels was removed. All I can say is, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BREEDER. Bought my Beloved Sterling from them in 2005. When Sterling was about 8 months old, he started getting really weird symptoms. First, it was Diarrhea, so we thought it was the food. After changing his diet several times, to no avail, we tried putting pumpkin (recommended by our Vet) in his food. This helped, but only for a few weeks. He suffered pretty much his whole life from the runs. Next, at about 10 months of age, his toe nails started to crack and break off, really brittle. Again, after spending another $800.00 in tests, there was no answer (and we tried several Vets). I can go on, and on, but it would take forever. All this didn't matter to us, WE LOVED our Sterling....... On October 27th, 2011, we had to put our Sterling Down. Bone Cancer. It was this time, when we took him in, we were going over Sterlings past. The Vet (different than the first few) told us it sounded like Addison's Disease. He asked which breeder we had gotten Sterling from, but before we could answer him, he said "it wasn't Gaila from Evening Star was it?". Need I say more? I just hate to think my Sterling suffered his whole life due to POOR BREEDING HABITS. read more
