They were loved, warm in the winter, cool in the summer.

Unless those are met, we do not take a vacation. On last Saturday, we went to Petsmart to get some dog food and cat food. My wife found this lovely dog that she would not leave without her. Art and Paws Animal Rescue went through all the questions about our living environment to make sure the dog was going to a right place, made sure that we were committed, not compulsive and showed us the papers with medical history and everything. Lulu is so happy being with other brothers and a sister and fit right in without hesitation. There are some dog rescues that only concentrate on making dogs adopted but Art and Paws Rescue really care for the dogs and we felt the right thing as dog owners. I went the day after Christmas to do my meet and greet and spent an hour with her asking questions. I never felt rushed. I never felt like I was irritating her, she was just fabulous. Everything this rescue does seems to be top-notch. They even feed a high and more expensive food which completely impressed me because puppy nutrition is so important. We adopted our new dog Jet here and had a positive experience overall. Everyone we met was kind, and it was clear the staff genuinely cares about the animals despite limited resources. Jet was clean when we met him and appears to be in great health. We also appreciated how understanding the adoption coordinator was about allowing a proper meet and greet with our senior dog Gus (15 years old, 14 pounds, and very dog selective), which helped us feel confident in the match. This shelter is very full and many dogs have been waiting a long time (6 months to 2 years). Compared to shelters that get more attention and donations, this location in Desert Hot Springs is less visible and easy to miss, and many dogs are housed outdoors in extreme desert conditions. We only met Jet because we came back multiple times and asked for a full tour. I understand it can be stressful for the dogs, but the reality is many won't be seen otherwise. Jet was not what we planned to adopt (we originally came looking for a small female), but he's a calm 50 pound sweetheart and we couldn't be happier. If you're considering adopting, take your time, ask questions, and ask to see all available dogs. And if you're not in a position to adopt right now, please consider donating or volunteering, this place truly needs it. I hung up, and decided to call Animal Friends of the Valleys to see if they could give me numbers for who to contact. I was immediately connected to a woman named Tara. She was so kind! I could tell she has a good heart. She was understanding of my concern for the injured bird. She took down my info and informed me that someone would be there to pick up the bird. About 20 minutes later, the bird ran off. I am assuming it was just stunned after crashing into the window. I called back to cancel the service, and Tara answered again. I came in yesterday during their Pawlooza event for the zero dollar spay and neuter fee. I was there for a good 30 minutes looking at all of their dogs carefully deciding on which one would be a good fit. Unfortunately that ate into 330 which I guess they don't do any interactions 30 minutes prior to closing, which would've been good to know upon my arrival at 3. I was actually ready to adopt the dog, but they advise that I need to interact and prior - no problem as I came in the next day like they recommended. I came in, interacted with her for a good five minutes I knew she was the one and so went straight to the front desk to adopt. I was assisted by CRISTINA which is where it all went downhill. I had politely gave her the details that we were in yesterday, but couldn't adopt due to needing to interact and so I'm here today and seeing if they would extend the fee where she had rudely responded " it doesn't matter it ended". I was taken back because this was literally like a minute into our conversation where she was already acting this way. I left it at that. I continued with the adoption process with her and for an additional 5 minutes, I was standing there with no progress and had asked her is there anything she needs from me and she said if I filled out the application where I had said yes it's right here and gave her attitude back by saying "you never asked for anything" because at this point, I'm matching her same energy. The process took an additional 45 minutes because she kept chatting with multiple colleagues that were sometimes not even important work details and even had interrupt their conversation a few times to continue the process. Overall terrible experience and if I was her, I would've looked more into the situation - it's not like I was there during the event yesterday and simply was indecisive and then came in today. It was because they wouldn't let me adopt her that day which again I understand they have rules, but there should've been an exception made. Even then, beyond this detail, there were the additional ones that I described that just would've made the experience terrible anyways. She needs to seriously reconsider a job working with people if she's going to act this disgusting.

Take pictures of everything, because you never know when it might come back to bite you. I recently adopted a beautiful dog who, unfortunately, wasn't compatible with our sweet Lab that we've had for 8 years. Because it wasn't working out, we made the decision to return the dog. When I first received her, she was extremely skinny. I could see her bones, and honestly, my first thought was, "What were they even feeding her?" But because I wasn't familiar with her breed, I thought maybe that was just how she was built. After we returned her, I was shocked to have someone call for a welfare check and be told that an animal cruelty complaint had been made against me because the dog was supposedly returned skinny. That really hurt and frustrated me because I would never intentionally hurt an animal. Of course, they don't know me personally, but I know the kind of person I am and how much I care about animals. So please take this as a heads-up for anyone adopting: Document the condition of the animal when you receive them. Take pictures and, if possible, keep any paperwork or records you receive from the shelter. You just never know what could happen if the adoption doesn't work out. I'm sharing this because I wish someone had told me this beforehand.
