We sought out a reliable long-haul flight to the Philippines since there are no direct flights to the country from Chicago. My family flew multiple airlines decades past to the Philippines but our most recent trip with EVA air is possibly one of the best in-flight experiences we've ever had. Average travel time to the Philippines which include flight time plus layovers average 18 hours. That is significant and any travel time within this range is considered an ultra-long haul flight. With aging parents in their 80s plus the travel time, we considered a few things. Budget and comfort were the two big ones. We can't afford to fly a family of 4 out in business however we opted to spring for premium economy. In 1992, EVA air was the first airline to offer premium economy seating. Over 30 years later EVA continues to perfect the premium economy experience and it shows in their service, amenities, environment and food. Service and food options were superb. The amenities and comfort are worth the extra expense. If you choose to upgrade, EVA air offers an exclusive premium economy menu which you'll have early access to view and select your meal by pre-checking through logging on their website. The premium economy dining experience is gourmet quality. For added convenience you have your own power source for USB and 110V outlets near each seat. Premium also offers upgraded personal care kits with a pillow and blanket set, larger seat pitch with greater recline, footrests and exclusive bathroom with upgraded bathroom toiletries. We requested wheelchair assistance for both my parents since the both of them, although able to walk, have limited mobility. Dad is on a cane and mom can only walk short distances. The staff on EVA air were extremely patient helping my parents navigate transport as they were coming on/off the plane. EVA flight attendants were ready to assist when my parents needed help with accessing the amenities onboard in addition to catering mom's dietary restrictions. Wheelchair assistance was available every step of the way between connecting flights and airports. It made traveling easy and stress free. Yes premium economy comes at a premium. The upgrade will cost a few hundred more per person but it is worth it especially when taking a long or ultra-long haul flight. The key is to fly during low season to get the best deals. For this flight we were allowed two large checked in bags with weight limit of around 50 lbs and one carryon. I can't remember the carryon weight limit but you can check the website on their FAQ page.

We had a great experience with Eva Air flying from Chicago to Guangzhou China with a layover in Taipei.  The Boeing 777-300ER basic economy seats had nice leg room (33" pitch), but if you want to go for premium economy, those extra roomy seats (38" pitch) almost look like they are worth the healthy premium.  The attendants and in-flight service and entertainment were fine.  The food was quite good and included two hot meals and a cold sandwich.  With comfortable seats, the 16 hour flight to Taipei went by relatively quickly once you are able to nap some between movies, music, and the meals.   From my experience to date, I'd rate Eva Air slightly over Korean Air (which was also satisfactory but with less comfortable seats) and any foreign airline over the US airlines for long haul flights.   We also flew Eva Air on the return trip from Hong Kong to Chicago and again with a 3 hour layover in Taipei.  The long 13.5 hour leg was also on a Boeing 777-300ER.  The seat pitch was a bit tighter by 1-2 inches compared to the outbound flight and I learned the degree of comfort actually depends on the version of the 777-300ER you get!  Upon some subsequent research, there are 4 versions of the 777-300ER and only 1 version has the 33" pitch vs 31-32" for the other 3!  Otherwise, food and service and entertainment were again quite fine except for one meal (a Korean-style BBQ beef with rice which was mediocre).  Flying Eva will likely also mean a layover in Taipei and their international terminal is state-of-the-art, classy, and comfortable, and so that is another plus.  Overall, I'll say 4.5 stars, a great airline, and I would enthusiastically fly with them again.

The seat pitch was a bit tighter by 1-2 inches compared to the outbound flight and I learned the degree of comfort actually depends on the version of the 777-300ER you get!

I am writing this review with gratitude to a representative who went above and beyond, along with his co-workers, to help make our flight happen as planned. I wanted to write this review as soon as I got back, but I have been busy until now. United Ground department, I hope Samir didn't get in trouble for spending an extensive time helping a customer. His compassionate ways have made my mom's relocation possible. I highly encourage recognition of such working ethics. Good workers make great companies. It was the weekend of May 30, 2026, flight # UA2373. My mom was a frail disabled senior over 80 years old. I came to NY to fly her to CA, as she had been requesting. The flight was long, she got very tired and became very difficult to deal with. She was walking around the area with a cane, being uncooperative with me. She found Samir Mezzi and got very comfortable with him. She only trusted him and no one else. Samir was on duty but was very willing to help her. My flight was close to departure when she refused to enter the TSA checkpoint for the security screening process. When I explained to him the situation, he didn't hesitate to help, he was very determined to successfully help us fly. After some time spent being patient with my mom, he called his colleagues to figure out some ways. They figured to team up and help us out. There were several of them, from various departments. They comforted her, were gentle and patient with her. They even bought her a soda. The TSA checkpoint was successful. The manager of United Airlines came and offered solutions to the challenging situation, of a complimentary onsite hotel stay or delay it, in wanting to help make the flight an easier and more comfortable experience. She was also very patient and genuine. We passed the TSA checkpoint and went on with proceeding to the check-in gate. I wanted to let her know of my decision, but it would be a hassle and leave my mom for a moment to come back to talk to her. So, I didn't. I hope she understands. But I did speak to her about my appreciation. Samir kindly helped my mom all the way until she was seated on the plane. He said some comforting kind words to her before he left. We appreciate everything he has done. My mom is now happy and healthier living in CA with me. Congratulations to United Ground for having such a stella worker. He well represented the department and the airline. Thank you, Samir, his coworkers, United Airline manager, United Ground, and United Airlines for making it possible. Much appreciated.

Leading up to our trip, we kept receiving email confirmations that everything was on time no issues at all. Then, the moment we arrived at the airport, we were blindsided with an email saying our flight was CANCELLED. No warning. No heads-up. Just canceled. The only options given were to rebook or take a refund. The earliest available rebooking wasn't until Tuesday, which completely ruined our plans, so we were forced to take a refund and book last-minute tickets with United Airlines costing us significantly more money out of pocket. We were told our baggage would be transferred to our return flight, which added to the confusion and stress. Unfortunately, it didn't end there. On our way back from Puerto Rico, we were scheduled again for a 12:29 PM flight. Throughout the day, we kept getting delay notifications one after another until the last update pushed the flight all the way to 2:59 AM. We waited, checked in, and then unbelievably the flight was CANCELLED again. At that point, there was little to no help from staff. We were told to go to the Spirit desk, leaving us scrambling around the airport, trying to figure out how to retrieve our luggage from baggage claim, rebook flights, and then go back through TSA all over again. It was chaotic, exhausting, and completely disorganized. Once again, no available flights until Monday or Tuesday. Rebooking with Spirit would have meant more delays, more uncertainty, and more money wasted with zero guarantee the flight wouldn't be canceled AGAIN. So we had no choice but to request another refund and book with United Airlines spending even more money just to get home. This entire experience was stressful, expensive, and completely avoidable with proper communication and customer support. Spirit Airlines showed zero reliability and zero accountability. Never EVER flying with Spirit again. The "cheap" price is not worth the headache, the risk, or the extra costs you'll end up paying in the end. Huge thanks to United Airlines for actually getting us home safely.

But this had 150+ HD movies, including some new releases. I'm on a bit of a Marvel kick at the moment, and there was a section for pretty much every recent MCU movie. The video consul also had a plethora of TV shows to watch. Suddenly my 13-hour flight didn't look so bad. The flight attendants soon came around to give each passenger a zippered pouch containing an eye mask, ear plugs, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste. Definitely not too shabby. They also handed out menus for our flight. Considering this was an international flight, I was hoping we could get some meals on it. But these meals surpassed expectations. We got two full meals with a pizza snack during the longest legs of our trip. And the meals reflected our destination. The Indian and Middle Eastern fare was pretty delicious, with the chicken biryani and rice pudding being my faves. We also got free beer and wine on the trip, which helped a bit with trying to sleep on the flight. The chairs in coach were decently comfortable, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Boooo. Everyone at Virgin (they are actually employees for Continental, I believe, but with all the mergers lately that may have changed...) have always been nice and helpful. Organized boarding system, rarely a line to get to the counter, and every single time I've flown from ORD, the Virgin crew has been lovely. I swear they hire femme-bots as flight attendants, they are all crazy gorgeous (and yes, they are all great at their jobs, too!). The only thing I took a star off was for the ORD lounge. If you fly Upper Class or are a Gold Member, you get to use the lounge. Now, I realize that with one flight a day, only in the summer, they can't set up their own lounge, however, they share it with Swissair, and it's just sad. I know, total #firstworldproblem, but if I were paying full price for a ticket (which I never do....Watch the sales!), I'd be annoyed. Last time I was in there, they were out of almost everything to eat, were out of bottled water, and had all but a few bags of peanuts left. This, again, is because they are a shared lounge, so it's first come first serve with all the other airlines. I've flown out of Boston, and they also have one flight a day to LHR, and man, that lounge is incredible. Small, but just wonderful- it's a shared lounge as well, but Virgin runs it, and it's awesome. (also, if you ever get the chance, the Virgin London Arrivals Revivals Lounge at LHR is insane, and the London Virgin Clubhouse for outbound flights should seriously be on your bucket list.)
