We sought out a reliable long-haul flight to the Philippines since there are no direct flights to the country from Chicago. My family flew multiple airlines decades past to the Philippines but our most recent trip with EVA air is possibly one of the best in-flight experiences we've ever had. Average travel time to the Philippines which include flight time plus layovers average 18 hours. That is significant and any travel time within this range is considered an ultra-long haul flight. With aging parents in their 80s plus the travel time, we considered a few things. Budget and comfort were the two big ones. We can't afford to fly a family of 4 out in business however we opted to spring for premium economy. In 1992, EVA air was the first airline to offer premium economy seating. Over 30 years later EVA continues to perfect the premium economy experience and it shows in their service, amenities, environment and food. Service and food options were superb. The amenities and comfort are worth the extra expense. If you choose to upgrade, EVA air offers an exclusive premium economy menu which you'll have early access to view and select your meal by pre-checking through logging on their website. The premium economy dining experience is gourmet quality. For added convenience you have your own power source for USB and 110V outlets near each seat. Premium also offers upgraded personal care kits with a pillow and blanket set, larger seat pitch with greater recline, footrests and exclusive bathroom with upgraded bathroom toiletries. We requested wheelchair assistance for both my parents since the both of them, although able to walk, have limited mobility. Dad is on a cane and mom can only walk short distances. The staff on EVA air were extremely patient helping my parents navigate transport as they were coming on/off the plane. EVA flight attendants were ready to assist when my parents needed help with accessing the amenities onboard in addition to catering mom's dietary restrictions. Wheelchair assistance was available every step of the way between connecting flights and airports. It made traveling easy and stress free. Yes premium economy comes at a premium. The upgrade will cost a few hundred more per person but it is worth it especially when taking a long or ultra-long haul flight. The key is to fly during low season to get the best deals. For this flight we were allowed two large checked in bags with weight limit of around 50 lbs and one carryon. I can't remember the carryon weight limit but you can check the website on their FAQ page.

We had a great experience with Eva Air flying from Chicago to Guangzhou China with a layover in Taipei. The Boeing 777-300ER basic economy seats had nice leg room (33" pitch), but if you want to go for premium economy, those extra roomy seats (38" pitch) almost look like they are worth the healthy premium. The attendants and in-flight service and entertainment were fine. The food was quite good and included two hot meals and a cold sandwich. With comfortable seats, the 16 hour flight to Taipei went by relatively quickly once you are able to nap some between movies, music, and the meals. From my experience to date, I'd rate Eva Air slightly over Korean Air (which was also satisfactory but with less comfortable seats) and any foreign airline over the US airlines for long haul flights. We also flew Eva Air on the return trip from Hong Kong to Chicago and again with a 3 hour layover in Taipei. The long 13.5 hour leg was also on a Boeing 777-300ER. The seat pitch was a bit tighter by 1-2 inches compared to the outbound flight and I learned the degree of comfort actually depends on the version of the 777-300ER you get! Upon some subsequent research, there are 4 versions of the 777-300ER and only 1 version has the 33" pitch vs 31-32" for the other 3! Otherwise, food and service and entertainment were again quite fine except for one meal (a Korean-style BBQ beef with rice which was mediocre). Flying Eva will likely also mean a layover in Taipei and their international terminal is state-of-the-art, classy, and comfortable, and so that is another plus. Overall, I'll say 4.5 stars, a great airline, and I would enthusiastically fly with them again.

We sought out a reliable long-haul flight to the Philippines since there are no direct flights to the country from Chicago. My family flew multiple airlines decades past to the Philippines but our most recent trip with EVA air is possibly one of the best in-flight experiences we've ever had. Average travel time to the Philippines which include flight time plus layovers average 18 hours. That is significant and any travel time within this range is considered an ultra-long haul flight. With aging parents in their 80s plus the travel time, we considered a few things. Budget and comfort were the two big ones. We can't afford to fly a family of 4 out in business however we opted to spring for premium economy. In 1992, EVA air was the first airline to offer premium economy seating. Over 30 years later EVA continues to perfect the premium economy experience and it shows in their service, amenities, environment and food. Service and food options were superb. The amenities and comfort are worth the extra expense. If you choose to upgrade, EVA air offers an exclusive premium economy menu which you'll have early access to view and select your meal by pre-checking through logging on their website. The premium economy dining experience is gourmet quality. For added convenience you have your own power source for USB and 110V outlets near each seat. Premium also offers upgraded personal care kits with a pillow and blanket set, larger seat pitch with greater recline, footrests and exclusive bathroom with upgraded bathroom toiletries. We requested wheelchair assistance for both my parents since the both of them, although able to walk, have limited mobility. Dad is on a cane and mom can only walk short distances. The staff on EVA air were extremely patient helping my parents navigate transport as they were coming on/off the plane. EVA flight attendants were ready to assist when my parents needed help with accessing the amenities onboard in addition to catering mom's dietary restrictions. Wheelchair assistance was available every step of the way between connecting flights and airports. It made traveling easy and stress free. Yes premium economy comes at a premium. The upgrade will cost a few hundred more per person but it is worth it especially when taking a long or ultra-long haul flight. The key is to fly during low season to get the best deals. For this flight we were allowed two large checked in bags with weight limit of around 50 lbs and one carryon. I can't remember the carryon weight limit but you can check the website on their FAQ page. read more
We had a great experience with Eva Air flying from Chicago to Guangzhou China with a layover in Taipei. The Boeing 777-300ER basic economy seats had nice leg room (33" pitch), but if you want to go for premium economy, those extra roomy seats (38" pitch) almost look like they are worth the healthy premium. The attendants and in-flight service and entertainment were fine. The food was quite good and included two hot meals and a cold sandwich. With comfortable seats, the 16 hour flight to Taipei went by relatively quickly once you are able to nap some between movies, music, and the meals. From my experience to date, I'd rate Eva Air slightly over Korean Air (which was also satisfactory but with less comfortable seats) and any foreign airline over the US airlines for long haul flights. We also flew Eva Air on the return trip from Hong Kong to Chicago and again with a 3 hour layover in Taipei. The long 13.5 hour leg was also on a Boeing 777-300ER. The seat pitch was a bit tighter by 1-2 inches compared to the outbound flight and I learned the degree of comfort actually depends on the version of the 777-300ER you get! Upon some subsequent research, there are 4 versions of the 777-300ER and only 1 version has the 33" pitch vs 31-32" for the other 3! Otherwise, food and service and entertainment were again quite fine except for one meal (a Korean-style BBQ beef with rice which was mediocre). Flying Eva will likely also mean a layover in Taipei and their international terminal is state-of-the-art, classy, and comfortable, and so that is another plus. Overall, I'll say 4.5 stars, a great airline, and I would enthusiastically fly with them again. read more
No issues, with anything, although there was a slight delay taking off because of a mechanical issue. That probably added another 45 minutes to the flight to Taoyuan International. Aside from that, I found my seat to be comfortable and the lavatories to be very clean. The employees were generally friendly and the beautiful flight attendants, I've never seen so many on one plane. The food was above decent and I guess my only complaint was the small wine pours, I wouldn't say it reminded me of communion but I switched to beer and they just gave me the entire can. And Taiwanese beer is very crisp and refreshing. This was my first time flying Eva and I was very impressed with their non stop emails and texts leading up to the flight. Moreover, the app user experience wasn't too bad. I'm looking forward to using Eva going forward and I hope to visit Taiwan, to enjoy the beauty of that country. read more

First time I ever flew through EVA Air. Like all of the Asian airlines it seems like there is a mandatory layover in the country of origin. EVA was no exception and we flew from O'Hare Airport in Chicago to Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan. The plane we flew on was enormous we were in row 56 with at least 10 rows behind us. In the economy section where we flew they have 10 seats across in a 3-4-3 seating arrangement. EVA like all the airlines lately have been going with no frills for the economy class. The seats are very tight as they try to maximize the number of bodies they can fit on each flight. The aisles are so narrow I was forced to pick up my tiny carry on luggage and carry it down the aisle as it kept catching on the seats on both sides of the aisle. Their restrictions for carry on is insane, 7kg or 15lb max. My small carry on was less the 1/2 filled to fulfill the 15lb maximum weight. You are also allowed a purse, small backpack or bag not to exceed 5kg. You are allowed 2 bags or boxes per customer not to exceed 50lbs. As usual you can tell who the Filipinos are by their balakbayan boxes. My wife and I each had 1 suitcase & 1 balakbayan box both within the 50lb or less weight restriction. We were individually presented w/a menu of what was to be served along w/a menu selection of both alcoholic & non alcoholic drinks on our 15hr flight. The menu presentation was kind of cool, but unfortunately the food wasn't very good (typical airline food). The service however was excellent. Be aware before booking with them!!!! Called customer service today, and spoke to representative. Representative put me on told multiple times, and eventually just gave corporate phone number without the knowledge if it's a working number- 5625656000, called that number - "NON WORKING NUMBER". Checked online and found a totally different number 800-695-1188, called multiple times and unable to reach any representative and would automatically hang up on me a couple of times. I flew on July 1 to Bangkok, Thailand, via Taipei, Taiwan. I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive because it was my first time utilizing EVA. Why was I apprehensive? Well, the total commute time was going to be over 24 hrs total!! What if it's a lousy airline, and I'm stuck with them for the duration?!? I am very happy to report that it was not only a good experience, but probably the best flying experience I have ever had. Their very professionally trained on board attendants are excellent. They turned the whole experience, my dreaded anticipation into a very pleasant memory; which I was very happy with. My first leg of the journey was a direct 15 hr flight from Chicago to Taipei. How do you confront such a long journey? Well, just like with a complex multi step problem, you break it down into pieces. The time period was broken up with meals, snacks, water, juice, coffee, wine, tea and soda breaks. It is up to you to fill in the in between time periods. You stand for a while, you watch movies, and/or you take a nap. I purposely reserved a red eye flight, a little after midnight, so that my body would be tired from the onset, to knock a few of the first hours out with sleep. Then, presto! About 23 hrs later I was landing in Bangkok, ready to haggle with a taxi driver about driving costs to my hotel. The first leg of the trip was, I kid you not, a hello kitty flight. The outside of the jet had hello kitty, as did the head rests, utensils, pillows, and yes even toilet paper. I am indifferent to hello kitty but some of the other passengers(not just the kids) were enjoying it. What did I learn from this flight? That all airlines based out of the USA are not only cheap but also greedy. Many years ago they cut out most amenities because of very low profit margins. Over the at least past 10 years fuel prices have been extremely low. Was the fuel cost savings passed on to consumers? NO! Did they stop nickel and diming you for food, headphones, drinks? NO! Did the level of customer service increase? NO! The truth is they simply pocketed the profits and never returned any taken away amenities to consumers. And to add insult to injury they started to push their credit card offerings on to you and put merchandise magazines on planes to sell you junk!! Next time, if I see a foreign carrier going to same place as a domestic carrier, my choice will be obvious. As long as people keep buying tickets and not shopping around then American based airlines have no reason to change their very profitable formula. So much for being customer service oriented by this greedy bunch. More domestic destinations need to open up to foreign carriers to compete for your hard earned dollars. All things remaining equal, the choice would be the foreign based carrier who is customer service oriented would win out the majority of the time. If a domestic carrier refuses to give you what you want, then someone else deserves the chance to earn your dollars. Would I fly EVA again? In a heart beat! Whats there not to like? Great customer service, delicious meals, good selection of movies, very clean plane including restrooms, good snacks, no pressure to sign up for a credit card or to buy junk out of carrier merchandise magazine. read more

I've flown EVA a number of times, and was very excited when they launched direct service from Chicago to Taipei. The level of training among staff is some of the best I've experienced anywhere, possibly the best of any airline. The only real cons are: - they usually cost more - you have to fly through Taipei, which is a great place, but you don't get to stay. It always costs less to fly through than to stay. That said, having flown a lot in Asia, I'm always relieved when I find a deal on EVA. Pro-tip: Book through an independent agent and not with the airline directly and you'll save a few bucks. I remember walking out of an EVA office in Taipei and across the street and getting a much better deal. In fact, if I remember correctly, the woman at EVA apologized they couldn't offer the same price I saw online and actually recommended the place across the street. That's how good their service is. read more
