The signage was very helpful and pointed me to exactly where I wanted to go. I was not sure if this was place to check out by donation or for a cost, but was excited to see that it was free of charge. It's a quick stop off and you can totally check it out spur of the moment like me if you are on your way to or from something else. This is located in an alley near Hoyt and Hewitt, kind of close to Cafe Wylde. Its not incredibly large, but there is a lot to check out in a small space. I am a lover of unusual food products and this was right up my alley, haha. There were many cool things to check out, I could certainly have spent more time but was on my way elsewhere. The person behind it all was very nice and shared how this place came to be. I even got some tips on how to find my own unique foods in the future. Best of all he had a few unique products for sale and I came away with some fun treats to try later, including a hot tamale bath product. He reported that he plans to continue to stock a few unique products to sell, so I will definitely be back to check this out in the future. Stop by if you are in the area.

I guess they recently remodeled, we tried a few times before we managed to catch them open and ready for business. Plenty of easy parking out front. Not too hot inside on a warm day. There were some samosas for sale on the counter. It has a separate seating area and some things for grocery type things and household items for sale around the edges. On the day we visited we were the only diners, but lots of people came in to use the store part. We both ordered the vegetarian combo. It was large and filling. It came with a beet section, which is something I have not experienced at other Ethiopian restaurants. My favorite part was a dark brownish item, but unfortunately I do not know what it is called. I also really enjoyed the salad section. I am not aware of other Ethiopian places in the area and the person behind the counter let me know that many people come from northern cities to dine here. It's nice to have this in the area. I know many people that are curious about Ethiopian food and it is nice to have a place closer to take them to experience it. Glad to have found this hidden gem.

In short A solid Ethiopian option in an area that has no…read moreother options. In long They just started serving food last spring, judging by their Instagram. This parking lot has had tons of interesting food options over the years, and still does. Alem heavily diversifies the area with the first African I can remember in this neighborhood, and still the only Ethiopian I can think of for miles and miles. Parking's free, and you walk in maybe thinking it's still only a store--look to the left, and there's now a casual, low-key dining area cordoned off with chest-high screens. 6 tables. Last night it was groups of friends, all clearly revisiting the food of the old country. Everybody had the big combo platter in front of them same as every other Ethiopian place you've ever been. One table called for coffee, and it came out smelling amazing in a gorgeous service set. They sat chatting and laughing until we left, even though they had already finished eating when we arrived. I love the friendly hang vibe here. The food is solid. All your familiar favorites--stewed meats, veg, chicken leg, hard-boiled egg, white cheese. No random iceberg-mix salad here, though, which is cool. The spicy injera appetizer, served cold, really hit the spot. I'd love more seasonings in the food, and more tartness in the injera. And I wouldn't mind things coming to the table hotter, either. It's rare to find flavors on the milder side like this at an Ethiopian place. But we demolished a huge platter of food and it was easy to enjoy. The market has all kinds of stuff--weaving, spices, traditional clothes, just a huge variety of things like a mini bazaar. The people here are so warm and friendly, just the nicest and kindest. I'm so happy to have Ethiopian near me.

Now back to their incredible staff in the bakery. I would have given 5 stars, but the first cake I went in for was a disappointing experience. For birthday cakes I normally like to do a cupcake cake in the shape of the age they are celebrating. So when I was put in charge of bringing a cake to celebrate my place of employment's second anniversary I thought I would go with the same idea. The woman who took my order was nice, but she was taking my order while talking to another employee about some trip they were planning. I normally wouldn't mind, but clearly she wasn't paying attention because when I picked up the cake I was very upset that it was just a plan cupcake cake, not in the shape of the number "2". I had no choice but to take it since I was expected to bring it in that day. They really made up for it a few months later when I ordered a cake for my daughter's 6th birthday. I ordered a unicorn cupcake cake in the shape of a "6". There was a hiccup when I went to pick it up. I can not remember clearly what the issue was, I think their main decorater called in sick or was otherwise unavailable. This time I set the pick up time for the early morning to give time in case something went wrong. Good thing I did, because they didn't have the cake ready and needed the extra time. And they went above and beyond. It was a beautiful cake! (Pictured) I loved the creativity and my daughter loved it! My older daughter's cake order went through without any issues a few months after the last birthday. It was a flower cupcake in the shape of a "10". (Pictured) She loved it and I was happy that the entire process went through smoothly. We no longer live nearby, but wanted to give their cake decoration team a shout out! Thank you so much!

Every single employee that I interacted with on Friday 4/24/26, both in the store and at the gas station were rude, cold and dismissive. The woman with long white hair walked by and gave me the dirtiest look ever. The bald guy that was getting the liquor locker seemed very annoyed to be doing his job. He seemed very short fused. The fat woman with red hair at self checkout was very inattentive and seemed more interested in her conversation with a co worker than actually doing her job. On top of that she's cranky as hell. The twig with long brown hair in the gas station has ATTITUDE. I don't know if someone ruined his day but he was very obviously annoyed and not very approachable. Go somewhere else to get your gas and groceries where you're appreciated as a customer. Thank you. Google removed my review!!!
