The American Serbian Club was formed by the many Serbian settlers who immigrated to the US after…read morethe first and second world wars. It was a gathering place for a few generations of Serbs in the Buffalo area. As new immigrants started coming in the late 90s, they were drawn to the club, as well. There were many memories made in that Tonawanda street building. People from the community recall birthdays, wedding showers, baby showers, retirement parties, and many celebrations over the years. A lof of Buffalonians claim to have "grown up" in the Serbian Club. Two couples, kumovi, and good friends, Dusan & Stephanie Ristic and Boris & Dragana Zinaja, stepped up and decided to purchase the club, therefore continuing the 70+ year tradition. Without any prior restaurant/club experience, they hope to reestablish the club as a welcoming gathering place for Serbs born in Western New York, those who have more recently come to the area, and all other people interested in learning about Serbian culture and traditions in a warm and relaxing environment where they can feel at home.

We are here to volunteer at "A Taste of Life", a fundraiser for Roswell, specifically for lung…read morecancer research and treatment. The whole first floor and courtyard are set up with beer, wine and a few hard liquor choices. There are tastings in each of the three rooms and the courtyard. Some of the tastings are: bruschetta with assorted toppings, Bavarian pretzels with a cheese sauce, a smoked turkey wrap, 4 different wood fired pizzas,macaroni and cheese, several cheese platters, a really beautiful dessert table with mini fruit tarts and chocolate eclairs, Mexican street corn, mini cupcakes, jerk chicken bites, empanadas. Of course the most important part of the evening was hearing an inspirational story from a 17 year survivor and her battle.

Deciding to attend the kid's fishing derby wound up being quite the catch (wink). The pond was…read morestocked with walleye, and normally contains bass, blue gills, koi fish, etc. The rules were that the biggest fish caught by a kid wins the tournament. With the biggest fish caught (twice) being an 18" large mouth bass, needless to say those kids did not flounder (wink). If a fun, free day of fishing with your kids or grandkids isn't enticing enough, the Club also cooked up hot dogs, french fries and hamburgers, gave every kid a very generous door prize and awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers trophies. Not too bad for free, and these conditions will bring me back next year, hook, line and sinker (wink). No good fishing expedition could be that good without embellished fishing stories to boot, and my son got his first lesson here. Not only did he catch his first fish solo here years ago, but now he can claim the fame of the only kid to catch a 14.5 ft. Hammerhead Shark. Well, no, but when he really wanted to win the tournament, I told the judges he caught that fish and then winked at him with a smile. The judges had a good laugh, but later my son said to me, "Dad, do you think they believed you about me catching a shark". They don't have to, kid, every fisherman tells tall tales. Like the fish they pretend to catch, fisherman too often fall for the bait (wink).

I first found out about the Massachusetts Avenue Project when I was looking for place near me to…read moredrop off kitchen compost. MAP is one of the drop-off locations for the City of Buffalo's residential food scrap collection program. If you'd like to participate, you can bring your scraps any time and look for the orange bins on the outer side of the fence. But MAP is more than just a place to drop off compost. It's an urban farm on the West Side that provides job and leadership training for low income youth. It also hosts cooking classes and gardening workshops, and a seasonal farm stand. You can also rent space in their farmhouse and/or commercial kitchen as well. I believe you can contact the org to request a tour of the farm (suggested donation $5), though I got a chance to see the grounds and go inside the farmhouse during MAP's annual seedling sale, where they also had outside vendors. Even though we didn't buy any seedlings (my recent track record with plants is not so great), it was still a fun visit. My three-year-old was interested in MAP's resident chickens, the demonstration beehive, and in the baby cows that were visiting the farm that day. We also purchased some food from one of the outside vendors, and some honey made by MAP's own bees. I'd definitely recommend being on the lookout for other MAP events if you're interested in locally grown food or edible gardening.

M.A.P. is an urban garden that is trying, very successfully IMO, to fill a "food drought" that is on the west side of Buffalo. They sell fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs and even chickens for awhile. Every room had carving stations and buffet lines, some rooms had shrimp cocktail and hors d'oeuvres. Multiple rooms had a bar available cocktail waitresses and waiters with different hors d'oeuvres and seating or pub style tables for people to eat at. After a day of mourning the Buffalo Club sure did know how to cheer everyone up and celebrate a life that will be sadly missed!
