We need more stores like this in every town: eco-friendly, sustainable, carbon-neutral, and plastic-free! They sell a variety of household goods, skincare and beauty products, and so much more, with the emphasis on good-for-the-planet and good-for-you. I had run past this shop and driven by many times, always saying to myself that I needed to drop in when it's open (which by the way is 11am-6pm), and finally got a chance to during the Capitola Art & Wine Festival. There's so much more in this store than I expected, and it's a lot bigger inside than it looks from the outside. Not only do they sell a lot of specialty and everyday items from quality and earth conscious brands, they also are a refillery so you can pop in armed with your own bottles/containers to refill with everything from body lotion to laundry detergent! It's awesome! Ethos is also a Certified B Corp, donates some of their proceeds to environmental nonprofits, is locally-owned, and women-owned! So many positive reasons to support and check them out! IMHO Love this store! Every time I come in, I can always find something new and exciting that piques my interest. On this particular visit, I was intrigued by the Eucalyptus Steam Cubes. They are "natural clay cubes that dissolve releasing essential oils for an awakening and refreshing shower." I happen to love the smell of eucalyptus! Okay I'll give it a try. I could either buy a glass container filled with 9 cubes for $29.95 or buy an individual cube to try out for $3.20. I opted to buy two individual cubes. If I want the cubes to last, I can break them in half to make them last longer. I like that idea. I'll let ya know how I liked 'em! read more

I've been here twice and last time my daughter and I purchased the witch hazel. She liked it and we came back today to refill it. While they were out of the specific formula we purchased another and the lady working was very helpful and kind. Her name was Mafer and she made our experience special with her outstanding customer service! This store is truly unique and has many products at reasonable prices. This is one of my favorite shops in the village! At first it was just a fun shop to look in, but after a few visits, I now get some of my staple products here. My favorite product I've discovered is the charcoal bar shampoo. I was skeptical at first, but gave it a try and I am so happy I did. This is now the only shampoo I use. It works well to clean my hair and I feel good about using it because it doesn't break the bank and is good for the environment too. I highly recommend getting the bamboo soap dish so that the bar stays dry and lasts longer. Aside from bar shampoo and conditioner, they have a good range of locally made bar soaps - that all smell amazing. They really have products for what seems like just about anything. Makeup, house cleaning, laundry - love the dryer balls, skincare, lunch packaging. And, it seems like there is always something new when I stop in. Sales associates are knowledgable and helpful, and always very kind. Great shop! read more

Absolutely love this store and all that it stands for! It's not common to find small local shops like Ethos that focus solely on products that are eco friendly. They have a section for home goods, skincare, makeup, etc. I actually came back to this shop just to take home these reusable cotton pads! They had a pack with all black, all white, and rainbow. I personally loved the rainbow pack and this is such a great way to reduce my use of single use cotton pads for applying toner and removing makeup. I don't live local but love coming into this shop anytime I'm in Capitola. It's a must! I love all of the sustainable and clean products they offer and their mission of zero waste. I've recently been looking for more natural beauty products and was having a hard time finding a body lotion in a store near me or online. They had a great one here! And it was nice that I could put it in a reusable glass bottle. As this tiny company themself explains, Ethos is all about "sustainable living, low-waste organization that includes a retail shop, art and workshop space, and consulting services." One visit to their quaint little shop in downtown Capitola will help you understand this noble vision. Everything product they carry is aligned with their mission. We stopped in while strolling around downtown. Initially, we wanted to compare this shop to one in Sacramento with much the same goal. Every aspect of Ethos was thoughtful, with items on the shelves like reusable straws and water bottles, candles and many refillable items people could bring back time and again. There's a BYOB (Bring your own bottle) refill station, too. They have a big focus on art as well and I love the exterior and interior design of this place. I am overall, very pleased with Ethos. I will say that their website is a bit of a heavy lift, as you have to keep requesting for items to load at the bottom - but that being said, I really liked the type of stock they carry and I feel the pricing on the items matched the quality. All the items I ordered came totally plastic free and packed very well in a brown envelope. The beautiful card (for my mother's holiday present) was packed separately in brown paper, and the bar shampoo and conditioner was wrapped in a brown bag and taped shut - which I really appreciated. The kooshoo scrunchies are amazing. I had purchased the plastic-free kooshoo hair ties from another retailer and found them to wrap on the tighter side. For me, the ties aren't my favorite, but the scrunchies are perfect. They're on the tighter side, but I always have two issues with scrunchies, one - they slide out because they're not that tight, and two they don't stand up very well. These have a lot of bulk to them and wrap tightly - I really like them. I could smell the wonderful shampoo and conditioner bars when I opened the bag and I really like them. I'd ordered bars from another retailer and really found that smell to be overwhelming - these smell like heaven. The only slight neutral for me is that the conditioner I chose doesn't wash out as neatly as the Plaine Products do, so I have to detangle more. I will say though, I much prefer to use bar soap hair care over a pump + container. Finally, I liked the Nudi spoolie and plastic free mascara. It was definitely subtle, but it smells devine and I don't have the same issues with mainstream mascara, which itches and causes me to pull out lashes. I will say it does have a bit of a learning curve - but all in all I'm a fan. I most definitely will purchase from Ethos again, especially since they're local (ish) to me! read more

This place is so rad. It is aesthetically very charming. Clean and tidy interior with a minimalist vibe. I looked at nearly every single item in this shop and took my sweet time perusing. I bought quite a few items because, how could I not? I love that they have refill options and I'd like to go back and try some of those products out, too. This a store focusing on sustainable zero waste products. Hence the name. While there is street parking, this store is not even a block away from the beach, which means you are not going to find street parking available unless it's like four in the morning. There is a surface lot more or less directly across the street but well, the beach traffic fills that one up as well. Like a lot of things in this part of capiltola, you are best served by finding a way here that does not involve driving. While this store is small, it's impeccably curated. That is to say well laid out. They carry a range of goods from health and beauty stuff to home décor, Frisbees, games, and clothing. So pretty much something for everyone. There are some good things here, particularly in the bath/body section. Generally speaking the items are higher cost (but higher quality) then you'd find elsewhere. For example the bamboo toothbrushes work very well, won't kill the all life on the planet, but do run from five to ten bucks. Tasteful, decorative and long lasting for sure, but whether or not that's the price you want to pay to try to do something to save the planet is up to you. All in all it's worth a browse and makes a good fit with the neighborhood. Bonus points awarded for being ocean friendly at the beach. read more

They have so many things that I've seen or read about online, all collected in one place! Prices are the same as I've seen online too, so you're not paying a premium. Leaf razors, Pela phone cases, solid dish soap, replacement heads for dish scrubbers, solid shampoo and conditioner, plus bulk lotions, oils, and other products. They sell dropper and spray bottles for your homemade products. I'm pretty into this stuff, and some items were new to me, like plastic-free mascara -- whaaaat??
