Go Ask Alice is a boutique in the middle of Downtown Santa Cruz. It has herbs and oils along with some trinkets and incenses and several other goodies for your witchy needs. Upon walking in, there is a definite Wonderland theme throughout the store. All of the items for sale are organized by brand and by what they are. The store is also relatively big. You'll usually see the cashier at the register or sometimes working on their laptop near the door. The service here has always been very friendly and hospitable. They can walk you through on what you are looking for and recommend something you may not have been looking for as well. The prices are a bit on the higher side for some of the things here, but some other things you will find at a very good price. Overall; a fun shop for gifts or for yourself. Went in yesterday for the first time with my boyfriend because a friend recommended I check it out while in the area and also so I could pick up some ingredients for them. The energy here is unmatched and I could've stayed in this place for hours! So much to look at and great people to talk to. This is a new, interesting store. I was drawn in by the name and the fact that there's a little mushroom shaped table and stools right outside the doors. I like the black and white striped painted path on the floor. It's very Alice in Wonderland, along with the pretty paintings on all the walls. They sell all kinds of spiritual home decor, incense, clothing, and paintings. I like the store itself, lots of good witchy stuff in there but my last experience there was pretty bad. When I went up to the register with my friend I saw the "Feel Free" bottles and told my friend not to go down that path because of how addictive it could be. The herbalist that worked there, a short man with a curly pony tail, began to lecture me on kratum for 5 minutes refusing to ring up my items until he was finished mansplaining. I told him I know enough about Kratum given I'm taking a Psychopharmacology class at csumb and have done individual research and he shamed me for being a student and trusting the information taught by my school. By the time he was done lecturing me there were multiple other people in line also waiting to be rung up. He was incredibly rude and had no reason to butt into my conversation with my friend. I've never felt so belittled in a store before and I've worked in customer service for over 7 years, it's not that hard to mind your own business. read more

He said oh they sell candles and whatnot. I love, love, love metaphysical stores, so of course I had to go in and wander around. The prices aren't bad. My friend and I were looking for some drops to help with sleep and relaxation. We had passed by many times before and sometimes came in to browse around but never found anything we really could justify needing. This time we came in with a purpose and spoke to the woman working and wow was she great! I didn't get her name but she really helped us out and she was so nice to hang out with those few minutes she helped us. She took us around the store telling us about a few different drops, asking questions to better understand what we needed them for and even walked us through all the ingredients. In the end we ended up getting two different drops and oh boy do they do the trick! A few drops and my friend was out! Restful sleep accomplished. On a side note I had been messing around with lotions while we went around and found a great CBD stick for pain and injuries. I had recently hit my wrist and noticed some swelling and limited movement. A few seconds in the store massaging my wrist and later that day I noticed significant difference in my wrist! Swelling had definitely gone down. I'll need to come back for that! Another side note: the woman helping us had the coolest teeth jewelry! It was so subtle but very pretty I almost didn't even notice it. She says she does it herself so if your curious now you know! This place has pretty cool stuff and some cooler people. read more

NOT a dispensary. Australian-owned and operated, this is one of only four stores in the US. Like the name of this place, you can get legal herbs that purportedly do all sorts of things! I had heard of a few and have tried a few myself, and well, it worked for me. The shop itself is in a strip mall of sorts across from one of the large parking lots. Next door to Hula's Island Grill, all types of herbs line the wall as well as tinctures, bindis, etc. Ones I can recall from memory include: * Cat's Claw * Maca * Kava Kava - Great stuff! * Damiana * Wormwood - Yes of the absinthe variety * St. John's Wort * Mugwort * Blue Lotus There were also herb cigarettes for about $8.95 a pack. It was my first time visiting this shop and I'm glad to say I did. They have a lot of hippie yogi attire but wayyyy overly priced. They also sell some herbal tea and some herbs. I drifted in here in the process of wandering up and down pacific avenue. This is my Alice story, if you want a just the facts kind of review, skip to the bottom: I'm not a big fan of better living through chemistry, and also have a deep skepticism regarding herbal supplement thingys. To be honest I was drawn in by some of the fashion items. Anywhoo after watching me poke around a wee bit the counter woman and I started chatting. Some of the herbal items are things that my great grandma used back in the old country, like chaparral (we used it ,as far as I know anyway, as a seasoning). She had an profound knowledge of all things garden and herbal related, and took the time to actually hear what I was saying instead of just discarding my concerns as ignorance. After some time I decided to by one of the herbal thingy's. It was only seven bucks so I felt I had nothing to lose. I'm glad I did. That stuff totally worked. Now, back to the just the facts review. Go Ask Alice is one of the older and better run places of this type on pacific. The owner's been around a while and she runs a tight ship. They have a ton of herbal products for various things and the staff are especially knowledgeable. Not necessarily the best pricing per se, but this is made up for by the excellent advice and knowledge of the staff. There is a small but tasteful collection of art and fashion items available, which makes it worth a browse even if you are not terribly interested in herbal stuff. This place has a nice selection of various herbs at reasonable prices, with lots of suggestions and information on usage. I came in looking for something that would help my focus without keeping me up at night (I'm very caffeine sensitive, and ginseng gives me insomnia), and the guy who was there talked to me about the many herb options. He was fairly knowledgeable, but not completely familiar with all of them. I have been trying what he recommended (rhodiola), but haven't seen much of a result yet. I don't expect anything to happen overnight, but at least I'm not wired for hours or unable to sleep. They had herbs for all sorts of things -- energy, libido, focus, stress, etc. They also have jewelry and clothing. The clothing was pretty cool and definitely quality, but not really my style or price range. Overall, good selection of stuff with a lot of information. After speaking with the girl inside and she schooled me a little more than I was expected I bought a few of there pill forms and gave it a whirl. Funny that this place is listed as "jewelry, women's clothing, and henna", because that is... not really the point of this place. They do have a bit of those things, but mostly what they sell is herbs, tinctures, etc, and they are my favorite place to get that sort of thing, as they have a huge selection, for all manner of purposes. What I like is that they don't go too deep into hippy BS - unlike a lot of stores that sell that type of stuff, their posted signage states benefits for the things they sell that are, more often than not, actually scientifically accurate, at least anecdotally. They've got tons of loose leaf stuff for making your own teas, as well as powders and premade tinctures, for reasonable prices, and their employees have always been super knowledgeable whenever we've had questions. The store was so cute and had such a wide array of stuff that we didn't even have time to look over it all. The staff member was very helpful and enthusiastic though and we ended up picking up two tubes of lotion made up of natural ingredients, including essential oils that ended up working really well for us. My boyfriend's hands are especially dry and we were able to start seeing results after only a day, even though he's tried many other products before. literally the worst customer service. I've been in this store and it was okay, pretty cool products but all very overpriced. A couple of days ago I walked in that store with my friend and right away the employee gave us the nastiest look and told us to leave our bags at the front of the store. That is not okay. If you have real evidence that someone is stealing, that is the only situation in which you can tell your customer that you suspect that they stole something. The employees are SO unprofessional. If you're going to have a "hippie" store you might as well not have the employees have the worst vibes in all of Santa Cruz. This is an amazing place. I just ran across it while browsing the area. I had no idea such a thing existed. I spent about 15 minutes perusing the walls-everything is organized by category and displayed on different wall sections and although the owner offered to help, she left me alone so I could absorb it all independently. Which I really appreciated. There were informational laminated sheets that allowed you to search by ailment and after I was ready to pick things out, she was very helpful, but not pushy. I immediately felt very comfortable, even with personal matters. So far, my husband and I tried some of the herbal capsules for energy. He is usually impossible to energize, but they worked. And with no crash like I get with caffeine. We actually got the entire front yard cleaned up in two days, which hasn't been touched in almost a year! They also do some of their herbs by mail, which is great since I'm not very close. They are on a street perpendicular to the end of downtown, convenient, but may be missed. Definitely worth the search. I am already planning a return trip to get more "energy pills." I hope they do well. We so need an alternative to big business drug companies. read more

Lots of really cool stuff. All of it really overpriced. This is an upscale boutique with high-end artwork, tinctures, herbs, incense, clothing and other crafts. We were on vacation. First a Couple came in before me which the girl had a small shoulder bag and I was just looking around and the employee in the front asked only if she can put her bag aside for policy yet that was never a policy.
