I went today to ethos salon at clayton, keeping my hopes up, hoping it is not going to be like my previous experience at different salon 1 year ago. Yes one year ago, cuz god forbids for someone to cut my hair shorter than what i want or make a wrong hair cut. Well let me tell you this, i went to Ethos and left the salon a very happy customer. My hair dresser's name is Mary, super nice listens to concerns and give suggestions. She has soft hands, brushed my hair without pulling it, very attentive to details and gave my the perfect hair cut ‍, much appreciated. This is not all. Hair ritual starts by having hair and shoulder message followed by hair oil massage. Shampooing constitutes of using Aveda Shampura that smells really good, hair scrubbing and putting a hot towel after finishing shampooing. I found this place through Yelp reviews and proximity and I've always found Aveda salons to be very consistent - great training, service and products. Ethos delivered on all fronts. I trusted Mary to chop off 2.5 inches off and bring my straw color back to a deeper brown and she nailed it! She also did a brow wax and tint while my hair color set - win-win! The products smell amazing and they give complimentary hand massages or facials while your conditioner sets. I will definitely keep going here and I also signed up for the VIP service, which gives you a selection of monthly services plus discounts on products and injectables for a set monthly amount. This will be a long one, but thorough! Backstory: I just want to start by saying in the past I've been incredibly skeptical of going to salons in general. My cosmetologist friend yelled at me to start going so I wouldn't damage my hair. I went to salon after salon and wouldn't return mostly because the stylists would talk me out of cutting my extremely long hair because they were afraid I would hate it. Until this salon, I never went to the same place twice. Ever. So, after I moved, I went to an Aveda Salon close to my house and had a bad experience. My color faded quickly and again, the stylist nicely refused to chop off my hair. I knew I wasn't going back and I was hesitant when a friend recommended Ethos Aveda Salon. The Review: I made an appointment and got in pretty quickly. The salon was beautiful. Relaxing, chic, and the lady at the front greeted me and offered an assortment of beverages. Then, Cheryl. Omg, first and foremost, I told her I wanted something edgy and professional. SHE CUT MY HAIR OFF, like I asked and I was so happy someone LISTENED TO ME. Not only did she cut it, it looked awesome. She also dyed it a vibrant red and she made suggestions that made sense. She also explained what she was doing and why. After all was said and done, she did offer me products but I didn't feel like I -had- to buy something, even though I did. I booked another appointment. I went and everything was great a second time. We did touch ups and went a bit shorter on my hair. Tonight was my third visit. I decided to switch things up a bit on Cheryl and go brunette. We discussed it and decided on a color and i knew ahead of time with the vibrant red, I would still probably see some red after the new dye. But, my hair didn't take it like it should've. We did it a second time and it still didn't take. And I was panicking because it was getting close to closing time and I didn't want to keep the staff but I didn't want to leave in tears and be upset with the money spent. Especially because I'm leaving for vacation next week and wouldn't have time to come back in and didn't want to have to pay to come back in. Cheryl did it one more time and went a shade darker than our original plan and FINALLY, the red was minimal and didn't look like an Aveda color tornado reeked havoc on my head. After 2-1/2 hours, I am SO happy with the way it turned out. Cheryl is phenomenal with both cuts and colors. She spends as much time as needed to make you comfortable and make you happy with what you get. The only ding I have is just the price. I'm still acclimating to paying this much, but you get what you pay for, for sure. Quality and reliable service describe Ethos Aveda salon the best. I happened upon this place when my regular place a few blocks up the road did not return my phone calls after several tries. I was broken-hearted since I really do love seeing my stylist and she always did a fantastic job. I was hesitant at first but gave this place a try anyway. I was due for a trim and I wanted some side bangs. When I called, the woman asked me what type of stylist I wanted. I am not picky so I told her to just assign me to whoever is available. They got me in the very next day which was great! I came in and was immediately greeted and checked in by a friendly personnel at the counter and then my stylist was notified of my arrival. He was busy finishing up with another client but 5 minutes later, he came and got me. We had a few minutes of consultation time and then he took me to the shampoo room. This is around the time I've made a good distinction between mediocre service to a great one! Ethos Aveda is definitely one of a kind. I have been to several salons around the area who have claimed to provide quality and relaxing service but I feel like I have never had any of those until I set foot inside this salon. The shampoo room experience is fantastic. First of all, there is a sign that respectfully asks the client to not use their phone while in there for yourself as well as others (for complete peace and relaxation). Then there is the relaxing melody playing in the background (flute music yesterday). On the wall facing the wash chairs is a replica painting of Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night. The room is filled with fantastic scents as well. Then the stylist will start with the shampoo and conditioner ritual. Yes, ritual! At Ethos Aveda, they don't just shampoo and condition your hair before starting with the rest of your services, they give you a completely new and relaxing experience that is unlike any I have experienced before. After shampooing and conditioning your hair, you get a choice of either a mini facial or a hand massage. I have had the pleasure of trying both and they are equally lovely! Then comes the scalp massage with your choice of oils: lavender or peppermint. You take 2 deep breaths and comes the invigorating scalp massage. I am generally at a loss for words at this point. Just when you think it can't get better than that, it does! When you get back to the chair, the stylist will give you a short but oh-so-satisfying neck and shoulder massage. I would say this is my favorite part but I honestly love everything including all the services I have received from this salon. I have been in to see Steven (my stylist) a couple of times for a cut and I always leave happy. Yesterday, my appointment was for color. He was very careful during our consultation process since I have had some major bleaching and colors done over a year ago and my hair was a combination of some colors of red like they were last year, some darker variety in the middle and of course, my natural color several inches closer to the top. He used 3 different pigments with different intensity to make sure that I get an evenly vibrant result. He did tell me that he couldn't guarantee a very vibrant color but I was pleasantly surprised with the end-result. I went with a vibrant copper, more toward their intense lines and I love it. He was patient, asked someone else for extra advice/opinion and explained to me why he was using the different pigmentations on each parts of my hair. When he was done and my hair was dried and styled, the overall color looked even and I couldn't be happier. The rest of he salon staff have always been friendly and great. Second, the worst of the news, she is no longer with Ethos as she has moved back to her home state. I would still 100% recommend you visit this place and give their other hairstylists a try. I spent an extremely long time in their Salon for highlights, cut, up-do and while my mom had the same thing done so I witnessed the other hair specialists in their prime. I was going to another Aveda salon that had lost its appeal when I found Ethos Aveda. With its location in Clayton and the many 4- and 5-star reviews, my expectations were very high. I'm happy to write that those expectations have been met and exceeded in many areas...except one. Pros - The staff members are all professional, friendly and willing to take the time to really discuss your hair. If you're like me, your hair is part of what makes you the person that you are. These people not only LISTEN, they also really know what they're doing. - The business space itself is very inviting. The shelves in reception are always stocked with the latest and greatest Aveda products. The reception, salon and shampoo areas are always clean. - Text reminders of your appointment! Thank you for not leaving a voicemail! - This ain't Fantastic Clips, honey! You're going to be pampered. It's going to take an hour (or longer). You're going to feel/look fantastic. Be prepared to pay because your stylist has earned it. Cons - The music videos. Instead of having music piped through a sound system, the salon's music is played via music video on various televisions throughout the salon. The problem isn't the sound quality; it's the videos themselves. For instance, when I arrived for my appointment tonight the video for "Rock Me Amadeus" was playing. Now, Falco has its place in the world...I'm not sure where that place might be but it's not in a high-class salon in Clayton (Falco was followed by Kelly Clarkson's 'Miss Independent', to give you a taste of the line up). Please, just get Spotify or Pandoria or any other music streaming service and let the stylists pick a station. Almost 1 year later I wanted to provide an update to my original review. A few things have changed... (1) My stylist, Britanny, got promoted to the artistic director of haircolor. (2) My hair color is better than ever! (3) Ethos got some new music (it's important to have a good soundtrack) :) (4) My skin care routine. I've adopted Aveda products and had great results! But most things have stayed the same (which, in this case, is GOOD): (1) Thorough consultation about cut and color (2) Mini-facial & hand massage during shampoo (3) Mini-shoulder massage before haircut (4) ... see my original review, it details everything :) I've had a couple special occasions occur on the day of hair appointments in the last year that Britanny helped me feel very prepared for. Most recently, I went on a nice date and she demoed the Aveda make-up line on me which was great to experience and made me feel fabulous for a fun night out. I can't begin to emphasize the importance of the relationship I've created with Britanny as my stylist. She knows my likes and dislikes and has ideas about color changes when I arrive, which I almost always am up to try because I've had nothing but great outcomes! I've found she is equally prepared to take over and suggest a cut/color for me (when I feel indecisive) or listen carefully to my feedback and deliver exactly what I wanted. This is the worst hair salon in the St. Louis area. The only nightmare experience and poor customer service I've ever experienced. Really disappointed that this place exists - hopefully not for long. The lady in the front desk - Melissa - apparently the manager have zero customer service etiquette. She is rude and mislead me into charging me more. It seems like I wasn't the only one who had this experience with her. After repeatedly requesting "masters" level she went ahead into my account and put me with a senior level hair stylist without my notice. After the nightmare I had with the hair stylist damaging my hair - Melissa decided to go ahead and still charge me senior level and lied to me that per my request of someone experienced masters level she thought it was best to change my hair stylist to a senior level. On top of that she kept arguing with me over the phone the next day as I tried to let them know that she should not do that to customers. She started laughing at me over the phone and told me that if i call again she will call the police - exact words - then hung up the phone She even made fun of her boss saying as "grown dude" when I asked for him to call me. Absolutely uneducated and poor in any level of etiquette. Disgusted by her attitude and lying behavior. The hair stylist - Tiffany - she was sloppy and messy. I just needed my roots touched up and added some highlights. But she damaged my hair and made it into four different shades of color from perfectly blonde with highlights. Its hard to believe she's their senior level. I had my hair pieces falling to my face from the foils. Even the foils coming off my hair. The top of my head looks bright but the two sides the roots are still untouched around my face. She used wrong color, and instead of giving me more highlights she took away the highlights I already had. She disappeared for more than 20 minutes without telling me anything while I had the bleach on my hair. I still had some bleach in my hair coming home with a severe headache. She changed my hair color from blonde with highlights to ashy, brown color. Please stay away from this place unless you want to experience horrible salon service and get tricked and get charged more than you are told at the time of appointment. Melissa is extremely rude and have poor customer service - you will experience that once you're in the books to get service and ready to pay at the checkout. When they mess up, good luck getting treated like a professional. They just want your money and ways to charge the customers more. I called afterwards and talked to the manager. She said she was the one who made the appointment and would not have told me the incorrect price, so they can't refund me the difference. I went to an Aveda Institute for skincare and I have been to 10-15 different Aveda salons across the country. This is by far the best, and the most authentic experience. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and offered Comforting Tea (and a refill!) I received a scalp massage both before and during my shampoo, as well as a warm towel on my face. My haircut was perfect. I booked my second appointment immediately. I took as friend's mother for a facial while I got my haircut and she liked it so much she is taking her sister there for hair services. I would also ignore that bride-to-be's comment. They complain about everything, are never happy when they get exactly what they ask for, and want everything for free. read more

I got my hair cut and highlighted this past Thursday (4/6/17) by a level 2 (the second highest level) stylist, and I am extremely dissatisfied. I splurged, spent over $200 (not including tip), the most I've ever spent on a hair style (even more than I spent when in Manhattan), thinking this would guarantee me a decent product, but instead it ranks among one of the worst experiences I've ever had. My highlights look okay (though they're a tad brassy despite my voicing my wishes that they not be). My cut looks terrible. I wanted to go shorter. I gave my hairstylist some guidance re: my preferences but otherwise told her to use her professional judgment as to what would look best on me. She didn't seem willing/able to do this, repeatedly asking me questions such as, "How short do you want your shortest layer?" I'd expect more confidence/guidance from a stylist at this caliber salon. Also, because I was going from long to short, the stylist did a quick dry cut to ensure we didn't waste color (totally understandable), but then she didn't go back to do much additional cutting later (like she initially stated she would), because it, "Looked really good!" Though I questioned her methods, upon leaving the salon, I agreed that my hair looked pretty good, so I left somewhat happy. But then, the next day I noticed that my short haircut isn't cute at all, has no shape, and is incredibly uneven. There's a piece in the back at the nape of my neck that is 1" longer on the left compared to the right, and I didn't ask for an asymmetrical bob. Additionally, my cut's really choppy and uneven on the right side and almost blunt, with very little layering on the left side. It's so disappointing. I tried to tell myself that the cut would grow on me, but then, on Saturday, after trying to style it again, I confirmed it is every bit as bad as what I thought on Friday, if not worse. At this point I decided to call the salon to express my dissatisfaction, something I have never, ever done before. I told the receptionist what had happened, and I requested that my haircut be fixed by someone other than my original stylist, because I felt she hadn't done a good job, therefore I didn't have any confidence in her. She checked with a manager and promptly called me back to tell me she could get me in with a new stylist the same day, which I really appreciated. But these were the only things I appreciated. This receptionist was extremely defensive as I respectfully tried to tell my story, cutting me off with comments like, "Everyone is human." And, "We've never had any complaints about this stylist before." When I tried to ask whether she thought the new stylist she booked me with would be able to have more confidence and be more precise with cutting short, fine hair (my problems with the original stylist), instead of trying to answer my questions, she snapped back with, "All of our stylists are good with short haircuts," and "He's the only person we have available - do you want to come in or not?" She actually hung up on me as I was still speaking. This receptionist never once apologized for my dissatisfaction (customer service 101), and because of her rude treatment, I didn't feel comfortable coming back for the correction with the new stylist. When I called back to cancel my appointment, she didn't seem bothered at all. She almost seemed relieved. Apparently my business isn't important to Ethos Salon, so I'll be going elsewhere for someone to fix my hair. It's just extremely disappointing that I wasted so much time and money here and on top of that am leaving with such a bad taste in my mouth re: the customer service I received. read more

I really wanted to like this salon since I love Aveda products and usually the service that I receive from other Aveda salons that I have been to. I was going to hire this salon for my wedding day since it is is so close to my wedding venue and I thought they would be the right fit for what I am looking for. I decided to go and get my haircut to check it out prior. I understand hair will grow. I get that. My problem is this: I am getting married very soon, like a few months that will come long before my hair comes back. I asked for a trim of about 1/4 inch because I want my hair to be as long as possible for my wedding day. I don't know how I could have stressed to her more that I wanted length and this was a very minor trim. Well, she ended up butchering my hair. During the cut I tried not to cry. I kept saying, "it's so short. How much did you cut off?" She claims she only cut 2 inches. Well, she definitely cut off about 3-4 inches of my hair, which has taken me years to get so long! Also, what part of "only a 1/4 inch trim" did she not get? And "I need my hair long for my wedding day!" I am so upset I can't even breathe right today! I had already ordered a custom made hair chain specifically for my long hair to wear in lieu of a veil and now it will not work! So several hundreds of dollars wasted on that not to mention my ideal wedding image completely ruined. Also, While their website says that you will receive a head and shoulder massage prior to your cut, and a makeup touch up, you will not. I received a hand lotion-ing (I don't think I can call it a massage since there was absolutely no pressure applied. Also, strangest shampoo of my life. It was as if she was just barely poking at my hair. But she was very nice so I just figured she was gentle or something and didn't say anything. So not only did this Aveda lose my regular business, they also lost my referrals, my bridal party, and the fact that I would have bought pretty much every product they sell! I did email the manager, whom just responded to me and said someone would be in touch to talk with me about the experience so I will update accordingly. Update: I was contacted by someone this morning 10/4, (after John's response to this posting) and was told that the hairdresser, Lisa, gave a completely different recollection of events. According to her she only took off no more than one inch of my hair and I was so pleased with her cut that I asked her personally to be my wedding stylist. Well, let's get to the facts of this. Lisa wanted me to hire her to style my wedding party privately with nothing to do with Ethos because she does private styling on the side. Before she chopped my hair I was like, sure, if you are going to save myself and my bridesmaids money that day, let's talk and see what you will offer us- no guarantee but let's talk. But after I got home and saw the butcher job, obviously that was not going to happen. While I thought she was personally very nice, I am not happy that she is being untruthful in this situation about everything that happened that day. I wish her version was correct because then I wouldn't have had to write this review to spare others. They offered me a complimentary bridal trial. While I appreciated the offer, I declined. I want the person who will actually style my hair for the wedding to do my trial or the trial seems pointless. I arrived at 12:30pm, the time I scheduled because a friend of mine had an apt. at the same time. Apparently they had it in their system for 12:15pm and wouldn't take me because I was late. An upscale, welcoming salon! My husband, son and I love the staff at Ethos. Ronnie and Lauren cut our hair but I would honestly let anyone color and cut. The reception staff are welcoming and friendly. The salon staff is up to date on current trends and techniques. They are always heading to an Aveda course. Ronnie and a Lauren listen to my hair ideas and will respectfully guide me in the right direction for my style and what my hair will allow. I receive numerous compliments on my coloring, highlights and cut. Did I mention the complimentary facial or hand massage you get while you're getting your hair wash! Amazing! read more

Last month, I, along with my bridal party, had our hair and make-up done at Salon Ethos. I cannot say enough about what an amazing job they did. I am Indian, with long, thick hair -- finding someone who can style it well has always been difficult. Stacy did a tremendous job of styling it into a low-side bun and it lasted the entire night. Heather is an amazing make-up artist.. unlike, many Indian brides, I prefer my make-up natural and simple.. which is exactly what she did. Again, even some of the harshest critics in my family thought it was perfect. The other three stylists working that day styled my bridesmaids' hair - each of them was extremely happy with the end results. The salon was very accomodating - scheduling my trial a few months before, setting up a comfortable space for us to use for breakfast on the wedding day, and so on.. An excellent little salon is a great part of Clayton. Great products and friendly staff. As with any salon, WHO you work with is as important as where you go. I've had great luck with men's haircuts, but I've talked to woman who were not happy with their stylist. Products are high quality and services are not cheap. It's first class area with lots of other stores and restaurants nearby, so it wins for convenience. Definitely worth a try if you are seeking a new salon. Would NEVER go back to the salon. Had the sytlist Sarah and she did a terrible job on my hair! She completely destroyed my hair, the color looked terrible. I have been coloring my hair for the 15 years and never had someone screw up so bad. I paid over 400 dollar to go to another salon for a color correction. The owners at Ethos were great to deal with and were very understanding and refunded the money. She charged me 300 dollars for ruining my hair. She acted like she had experience doing ombré but in reality had no idea. read more

I was a client of Lauren. I moved to St. Louis a year and a half ago and found ethos. I travel for business and found myself in the position to have to reschedule my appointment twice in the past year and a half. While I was attempting to reschedule, the owner called me and explained " it would be best if we parted and you found a new salon" I was baffled - he explained that because I chose to go to a different salon it was challenging for Lauren to do my hair. ???? I've been getting my hair done for 25+ years and have only lived her for a little over a year- completely baffled an owner would call me and ask that I leave because I went to another salon while I was traveling out of state? Truly shocked but certainly wouldn't recommend a salon that treats well paying customers like this. If you ask to reschedule an appointment beware- even if you give a few days notice as I did both times. They are so busy they can pick and choose whom they service. Wow. read more

I am very impressed by Salon Ethos! I have been a couple of times and my stylist is always very attentive to my needs . I not only received one of the best haircuts I have ever had,I also was given a complimentary shoulder and scalp massage!I left looking great but I also felt great ! What an amazing place! I went there with stainless steel roots done two weeks prior by a upscale salon and John and Zac owners were so delightful ! My master stylist Brittany made me feel comfortable and at ease even after seeing the chemical disaster. Never once did she do the "Drama OMG nonsense " she just went about doing what a well trained master stylist does miracles! After I went home that night and washed my hair with my amazing Aveda shampoo/conditioner purchased at Ethos,my color washed out because of the first salon stripped my hair to its pigment.I called and told Zac I need help they made arrangements and Brittany stated late to get my hair to perfection at no cost to me. Even though going in it was a horrible mess caused by a not so professional salon they took care of me till it was amazing!! Thank you so very much for your fabulous well maintained welcoming salon!!!They know fashion begins with fabulous hair!!!
