Paid over $400 plus tip for services I didn't ask for and didn't get what I paid for. Kevin the owner was my stylist and an apprentice did my color. Long story short, I asked for a toner to fix the warmth on my blond job plus a trim, received PARTIAL HIGHLIGHTS in a chunky Avril Lavigne red and was charged approx $400 before tip. Kevin was visibly uncomfortable but didn't offer to fix anything. Didn't even realize how bad he was until I went to get it fixed at a better salon and was charged $190 for the toner I wanted and a more drastic cut that took twice as long (Kevin's color faded after a week and I decided to cut my loses). Strands is a fantastic salon and the location may be off the beaten path, but it is a primo location. I'll cover that later. My stylist Cate relocated from a salon that closed in Clayton. I've been with her for over 15 years, so why not follow her. The reason I like Cate so much, is that she hand scissors my hair and only uses a clipper to trim up my neck line. So many stylist use clippers with attachments when doing a mans hair and I do not like that. To get a quality cut, my hair has to be cut with scissors. Why I said it was a primo location, it is located next to Louie and Sasha's, so you can have lunch or go to a relaxing Happy Hour. On the other side, you've got Kaldi's for a good cup of coffee. read more

I requested to have my daughters hair appointment rescheduled via email for another date. Instead of anyone getting back to me, they went ahead and charged my card for $113. Upon receiving the charge, I called and requested to have a refund. I was hung up on countless times by Tom (receptionist) and Tom refused to answer my call. (I informed Tom that I have poison Ivy on both arms and cannot put the phone to my head, therefore I have to have it on speaker phone and talk louder so I can be heard. He took it as me raising my voice.) I called from another number and he continued to do the same. Needless to say, they stole money and refused to refund as no service was provided. Just got my hair cut & colored by Natalie and I love it! She is very perceptive and really knows what she is doing. I got my first hair cut from her back in February and it was the first time I have left a Salon LOVING my hair, usually it takes me a day or two to adjust but she knew exactly what I wanted. (The cut was called the Bombshell). Today I got a trim to maintain that lovely cut from February and had my hair colored. I wasn't 100% sure of the names of the colors I wanted or the proper hair terminology but when I described the look I was going for and showed her some photos, she grasped on to it right away and knew what to do. I definitely recommend making an appointment with her if you are looking for a new stylist. Overall the Salon itself is great as well. It's got all the feels you would expect from a salon (ie. nice chairs, lighting, mirrors, decor) The products they use are amazing, I personally love Caviar. I'll even comment that the bathroom is very nice and clean as well, since that might be important to some people. They offer their guests water, and the other staff are friendly as well. Ps. I've been here twice now and I love the ambiance, the glass of wine, the hair massage, Diva (the sweetest pup eveeer), and Natali really spent an insane amount of time giving me exactly what I asked for. I had some unfortunate box dye problems (long story), and both she and Kevin really took the time to strategize the best color and treatment for me. The products they use are amazing! I just moved to the st. louis area and was looking for a new salon. I have very short hair, and do almost nothing to it (no product, very little maintenance). Ahead of time, i checked the price and it said a female haircut was $30-$70 and a male haircut was $20-$50, I never go in expected to be charged for a male hair cut, but usually i look at the different rates and expect to be charged between the two/on the lower end of the female haircut because my hair is very low maintenance. i go in, and get my haircut. it's great. my hair looks good, and the hair stylist was nice. but charged me $80. which is above the maximum listed on their website. now with haircuts you're in an awkward position because you've already received the service, so i paid it, but will not be returning. i expect for businesses to be honest, especially if they have prices listed on their website. it would be better to put "$30+", at least it wouldn't be a lie then. read more

Came here because of extreme damage and split ends. Really happy that my stylist didn't just cut two inches off and call it good, instead she spent forty minutes combing through each section of hair and taking off all the damage across each layer. I don't write a lot of reviews, but when I do, it's usually because the place is really, really good or really, really bad. Strands was AMAZING. I came in and the receptionist had me fill out a self-assessment about my hair (what products I use, styling tools, daily routines, what I want my hair to look like, time I want to spend on my hair, etc.), which was great because it showed the stylists were interested in my hair outside of the salon. Then I sat down with Maria Knight, my stylist, and she went through my assessment with me and asked a few questions. She then pulled out her iPad and we went through some pictures to make sure we both had the same hair cut/style in mind. After we both determined we were on the same page, she gave me a fantastic scalp massage and washed my hair. After she cut my hair, she explained how to style and do other fun things with my hair, which is helpful because I am terrible at maintaining my hair once I leave the salon. Bottom line: Maria really listened to what I wanted and simultaneously elevated my hair style. I told her I didn't want a drastic hair cut or some cutting-edge, hip look. Just something classic and conservative, but refined by her artistic vision/opinion. She listened and I got a beautiful hair cut with everything I wanted and more from her added suggestions. The price was more than reasonable based on how I was treated. Great salon. I'm definitely going back for as long as I'm living in St. Louis. read more

I have been frequenting Strands since 2005 and have never looked back! I'm a little elitist when it comes to hair care, it is of course the first thing that people see when I'm walking down the street, so I think it's really important. That being said, I need for my hairstylist to be HOT. I mean, noticeably hot because someone who is hot, has to have hot taste, and that's whose hands I want in my hair. It could help that the stylist is my friend, but... Maria is hot. And she makes me hot. Maybe it's just because of association but I truly believe that it's because she is touched with the gift of hotness. This is not to say of course that Ninfa, or Kevin, who are both hot as well would not do as great a job on your head, in turn making you hot. It's pricey, but 100% worth it. Over the years they have become like family. They've been doing my hair since I was bald, they styled my best people's hair for my wedding, they cut my teenager's hair and give her any colored hair extensions she wants, making her hot in her own little teen aged way and they will cut my babies hair. I had an awful knot in my hair, I mean a 4 x 4 inch nightmare that was tight to my head after a long illness. I called Kevin and pleaded for help. He said right away that he and his team could help and to come on in. I went and he had Angela work on my hair knot. She was amazing and stuck with it for the whole 2.5 hours it took to get it out. Hannah from his team also jumped in to help whenever she was free. Kevin kept checking on me and making suggestions. I was ready to give up a couple of times, but Angela kept me motivated assuring me she could save my long hair. Not only did she save my hair, but also washed and conditioned it with the best scalp massage I have ever had. They all really helped save my hair and my day.
