Wow Kai did such an amazing job on my cut and toner it made me rethink my standards going forward. Super detail oriented and really took their time to feel out exactly what I wanted (even when I wasn't sure myself at time lol) while providing a relaxed atmosphere where I felt comfortable asking for small adjustments or advice. My hair looks fantastic and the whole process was a great time! read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. I came into this salon with healthy hair and a simple request. Highlights. What I left with was a chemical war zone on my scalp and hair that looked like it had been through a haunted car wash. The stylist completely botched my color. It was patchy, uneven, and flat-out fried. I looked like a spaghetti squash that had been left out in the sun. Worse. I went back to give them a chance to fix it and it somehow got even worse. The stylist acted like they had never seen a toner in their life and honestly seemed like they were not in a sober state to be handling bleach or scissors or any other living creature for that matter. I ended up going to another salon just to undo the damage and they were horrified at what had been done to my hair. After spending over six hundred dollars and enduring two appointments from hell, my hair is still damaged beyond repair. Think straw with commitment issues. Do yourself a favor. If you value your hair, your time, or your dignity, run in the opposite direction. This place should come with a warning label and a fire extinguisher. read more

They got my daughter in the next and did a wonderful job on her first color appointment.

Thanks to the artistic gifts of Lillian, my hair is going to look fabulous for the holidays. Not only is she a great detail oriented stylist, but she also has a gift for hair coloring and for communication. I've had the same hair coloring done for many years and decided it was time to make a big change. I stopped in at One Six One, told them what I wanted done, and the two stylists at the counter decided Lillian would be best choice for me. I had my first appointment with Lillian today and went home with a gorgeous hair cut and a spectacularly beautiful rich hair color. Her expertise along with her kindness and her attentive listening skills really lifted my spirits. I love the calmness and simplicity of this salon, so although my former stylist left a year or so ago, I decided Salon One Six One was the kind of place I wanted to stay with. I made the right choice. read more

Great experience with har styling for out of town wedding. The stylist did a great job with a he bridesmaid updo for my daughter with special needs. I really appreciated that I didn't have worry about her or my hair and both held up through the evening. (Honestly my only issue is that it was a little tricky to make the appointment I needed. But everything worked out great!) read more

Charlie is the best in St. Louis and I hear great things about the entire team in this Salon. There are plenty of Aveda products which will be explained and offered but never pushed or forced. FINALLY I've found my STL salon!!! I got my hair cut by Sally yesterday. She listened to everything I had to say, made suggestions and I walked out of there feeling like a million bucks. I can't stop swishing my hair around haha. The salon itself was clean and beautiful. I like that they use Aveda products rather than things with harsh chemicals. Getting an appointment online was super easy and convenient and the salon did a great job of sending reminders. Thank you Sally!!!! Can't wait to come back! read more

I moved to St. Louis a year and a half ago and have been searching for my perfect hair stylist. I've been going to another place over the last year, and they did a decent job, but not exactly what I wanted. This past week, I took a leap and looked up some places on Yelp. I came across this one and made an appt for same day. Let me just say that this place is super cute. My stylist, Emma was adorable and did SUCH a wonderful job with my hair. I love how my hair looks and it's exactly what I requested. I'm so impressed and glad to find my go-to salon. read more

I cannot recommend Salon One Six One enough! The beautiful space, the knowledgeable staff, the quality products, and the fantastic services--everything about your experience here will be top notch. Charlie is the best stylist I have ever had. For the first time in my life, he helped me to truly understand my hair. This place is a true gem. Give it a try and you will find your new forever salon! read more

I visited them last week (1/23/18) and I am disappointed in this place. I was excited to find an Aveda salon so close to my new home. I thought this would be my go-to salon. I had winter dried hair and split ends and wanted a good 2-3 inch trim and to keep my layers. Now my hair is 5-6 inches shorter which is not a big deal to me but I have clearly communicated that I wanted layers & I have no layers. Just a U-shape in the back. Sure, it looked nice the day the stylist cut my hair and took 40 minutes to style it but I am a get up and go to work person who spends days often in a hardhat so I always go for the layers because it is effortless to make it look nice. Now I must wait it out while my hair grows longer and I will go back to my old stylist near my old home in Clayton. The stylist told me to come back or call her if I had any issues but I am not risking losing even more length to her. The pricing is what you would expect in an Aveda salon but the haircut not so much. Right after the haircut, I noticed the cut was uneven and she made some adjustments. Although very subtle, it is still not even. And the biggest disappointment of all was, I woke up the next day and I had split ends all over in the front. Blunt scissors? I don't know. I am not the expert. I can only speak for the results. I am sad this place didn't work out for me. read more

Dominique was fabulous, honest about what she could do , how lopng it would take and open about how she wanted me to be happy with the results! It's not like I was asking for much haha.. to go from died black to letting my natural grey/white come through and making the rest of my hair blend in with it while I was going grey/ white and do as much as she could in one day(5-8 hours). No small request tyo be sure! She was fabulous!!!! I can not say enough about how wonderful I was treated by Dominique and Charlie, and all the stylist there!! I will absolutely reccomend them and the salon to everyone who asks and already have;) read more

I moved from Tokyo where we have so many fantastic hair salons. My main guy in Tokyo was so awesome that it took me 5 months to get over him and finally got my courage to try new salon here in STL...well I wish I came here sooner!!! At this point, because of the dry air and difference in water, my hair was in a mess like I had never seen in years. Charlie the owner took my appointment in very smoothly and appointed Dominique for me. She took time to listen then got to work right away. The whole process was very relaxing, perfect amount of conversation, too, which I find it hard to find for customer service in general in the US. She recommended getting intense treatment which I still can't believe how well it worked on my hair...I mean it looks, feels and smells so so so good to the point that I can't focus on my work.lol For the cut, I told her that I'd like minimum hair cut basically just for the damanged part of my hair. The result? PERFECTION. She even kept the faceline that was made 5months ago, made it even better. I highly highly recommend this place and especially Dominique. So happy that now I have my new stylist to go;) read more

Initially, I found Salon One Six One because it was on my way home from work. My first appointment I was paired with Mykala and it couldn't be a better fit! Mykala always listens to me and looks through inspiration photos that I've picked, but she is also great about coming to the appointment with thoughts of her own - and now we know each other well enough that I trust her completely and always let her work her magic. I love coming to this salon because the stylists really work hard and help one another by giving opinions and suggestions when asked. Everyone seems to have a really friendly demeanor and great sense of humor (Mykala, especially). The owner, Charlie, cares about his people and always stops by for a laugh and a joke (which I love). This place is a gem and I would recommend it to everyone! read more

Highly recommend Claire for both cut ($45) and color. She was able to deliver above and beyond what I wanted for my dark, straight shoulder length hair. She also takes the time to understand what you want, and I learned quite a bit about color theory and styling tips. The salon itself is very spacious and bright. You are greeted as soon as you come in and offered a drink (water, tea, beer, wine). Lots of street parking. read more

I had the same stylist at another salon for 12 years who has taken a leave for health reasons. Wanting to stay in the city, I found this salon and was fortunate enough to land with the lovely Emma. I loved the salon right when I walked in and Emma immediately made me feel welcome and comfortable. Lots of questions and active listening on her part, knowing I was a new and nervous client. I love Salon One Six One! Charlie makes my hair look GOOD!!!

Today, I had a great experience at Salon One Six One! I'm new to STL and got a recommendation for a stylist from a co-worker. Leigh was an absolute pleasure!!! So sweet and asked lots of questions before even picking up the scissors. It's always nerve-wracking to try a new stylist but I had immense success. The salon space was cute and very tidy too. Mykala is the best when it comes to my wife's hair. Being a little harder than most hair, as she is mixed with african american and asian it is very hard to find someone that can understand and cut accordingly. She also cuts my daughters hair and it has never looked better. Nice inside area and I feel very comfortable waiting for the unveiling everytime. Great place, high recommend. read more

I cannot remember the last time I walked out of a salon so happy! I got exactly what I asked for! Claire is very sweet, totally made me feel comfortable with conversation & I have to say she has the patience of a saint listening to my requests and dealing with my indecisiveness! I wanted to make my appointment with Charlie after looking at their website as I have had so many negative experiences at other salons. He seemed to be the one to "work Magic" ~ Claire is now my go to girl and I HIGHLY recommend her and this salon in general! All around awesome experience! read more

Claire listened to what I wanted, while also giving her professional suggestions and opinions. I'm usually unhappy with my hair cuts because they come out shorter than I asked. Dominique is great for short hair! Easily the best person I've found in StL. Short hair can be difficult, especially if you get a bad haircut. Mykala does a great cut and an amazing highlight. She listens to what I want and if I say a trim, it's really just a trim. They offer a full line of Aveda products and will be glad to explain them, but there is never pressure to buy. read more

I request an appointment on Yelp and they were able to take me very quickly. The salon is stunning with tall ceilings, hardwood floors and bright natural light. It's set up really cute inside. I wanted a brighter look for summer and Mykala was my stylist. She took the time to listen to my hair concerns, study my hair and give me Aveda product recommendations based on my concerns. She was patient with me, super personable and did an amazing job. My hair turned out SO pretty and I bought some of the products she used on my hair. I highly recommend this salon and Mykala. She was wonderful! Thank you. I can't wait to go back! read more

I made my first visit to this salon yesterday after trying out several other salons in St. Louis to find the right "fit" for me, and this place is definitely the one. Scheduling was easy; I messaged the salon on Yelp and received an email back in a few hours. After leaving me a voicemail to schedule, the salon also texted me, which was fantastic. For actual services, I had a cut and all-over, dimensional color with Dominique. She was friendly, professional, and most importantly, HIGHLY knowledgeable about her craft. I have been searching for a stylist that would "give it to me straight" about my hair: What's the best color blonde for my skin tone? What cut best flatters my face? When am I going to have to sacrifice length for color? Dominique consulted me on all aspects, taught me why my hair was (mis)behaving in certain ways, and helped set some hair "goals" in terms of achieving blonde without bleach, getting more length, etc. I appreciated that so much; hair is really an art and a science, and I've been seeking that level of expertise. The end result was fantastic -- my color looked enhanced but natural (not faux/forced), and my strands were finally feeling healthy. The salon is also adorable, with great decor and a bright, inviting atmosphere. I was offered coffee, tea, beer, wine, water, etc., and had a great display of wonderful Aveda products to shop from (nothing was ever "pushed" on me, either). I've found my "hair home" for sure and highly recommend Dominique and the salon overall! read more

I love Charlie and his salon. I've been to him probably five times for cuts and two times for color since discovering his place. His haircuts and color are always what I ask for and my hair looks great not just the day of service but for months afterward. Plus the prices are really reasonable. I've searched for a good stylist for years across multiple cities and I've finally found the person who can give me "dream hair." For what it's worth I've been wearing my wavy hair naturally curly for over a year and Charlie is great at cutting it so it accentuates the waves. I'm already worried about what I'll do this coming year when I move from STL temporarily! read more
