This review is based on my first had experience as a customer of this business on Saturday, October…read more26, 2024. The art gallery is just one component of the Visual & Performing Arts Center (VPAC) at Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) Westside Campus. It doesn't really make much sense to have a listing for the gallery when there's not even a listing for the VPAC itself, or even for Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) Westside Campus at all. The gallery is barely mentioned on the VPAC web page, and after attending a performance at the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall, I'm still not sure where the gallery is located. Typical lack of curation by Yelp. At least the address is correct this time.

This review is for the Visual and Performing Arts Center in general, not specifically the gallery…read more I saw a production of "Bat Boy: The Musical" here and was impressed with the space. The building is very modern and has an interesting design. There are various spaces for different types of art within the center. I was in the theater, which was comfortable with big seats (not those tiny things like in Broadway houses) and the sound, lighting and temperature were great. The production of "Bat Boy" was also great. There is a gallery in the Visual Art wing and there is also a concert hall in the building, which I didn't get to see. This is a really cool building and definitely something the campus should be proud of.

We let her know back in January 13 of 2015 that we would have a guest list of 65 and that she would work with us since the minimum was 75. She showed us two different rooms, my fiance and I let her know we wanted to use one room for the reception and the other room for the wedding ceremony. We told her our wedding date would be April 22, 2016, she told us that the dinner price would go up because of the year and month we decided on but not by much, she told us that that wouldn't be a problem since people usually don't get married on a Friday so we would be able to have both rooms, however, she told us if a bigger wedding party were to want to hold their wedding at their establishment on the same day as our wedding, we would be forced to use the smaller room for the reception and the wedding ceremony. We told her we would need to talk about this, finally my fiance and I emailed her and decided to finally put a deposit down. I emailed Margot on March 16 of 2015 and let her know that we would like to put a deposit down for April 22, 2016, Margot proceeded to tell me that that day was booked and that we would have to pick a different day even though she told us that we would've been forced to use the smaller room if someone with a bigger wedding party booked the same day as us. She also let me know that the minimum is 75 period even though she said that she would work with us because we had a wedding party of 65. I let her know that that was absurd and we decided to go with another wedding venue, she proceeded to tell me that all contracts do these types of changes and to read a contract carefully, that the minimum has change and she told us this from the beginning even though she said she doesn't want to turn business away and that she would work with us with the minimum amount of people we had. At that point I stopped emailing Margot and my fiance and I actually put a deposit down with a better establishment that won't screw us over and that because we put a deposit down that the whole place is ours period. The Matrix should know better than to do business like this, you just don't say one thing and do another thing, it's very shady. This is how you don't do business.

I make trips to Danbury 3-4 times a year as part of an event I organize and host in the area that…read morebrings 100's of out-of-towners to Danbury. Since 2004 I have stayed in at least a dozen of the different Danbury area hotels at least once. I have been recommending the Maron as a primary option to my mailing list since 2009 when I first started staying at hotels in the area, and renewed this suggestion for Maron as our "primary" option since I relaunched my events in 2022. As of March 2025 I'm giving The Maron an indefinite time out after my most recent experience - which resulted in a stressful, chaotic interaction on-site and my having to pivot on the fly to scrabble for alternate accommodations. Unbeknownst to dozens of guests who thought they had iron-clad reservations on the weekend of March 7-9, the Maron was sold to another company (Riverbank) in Feb-March 2025. Due to the sudden change in ownership/management, the new owners of the Maron 1) decided to do room renovations to over 2/3 of their existing rooms on site while staying open. They also 2) said that reservations made with the former owners/management were not compatible with their new computer reservation systems. That meant 3) the Maron was overbooked by an unknown amount of reservations - possible in the double digits - and what's worse 4) they didn't inform anyone who had existing Maron reservations in advance that the hotel was double/triple-booked and that they couldn't guarantee rooms to anyone, whether they had an old or new reservation or not. I walked in at 3:30pm for check-in and there was a crowd of over a dozen potential guests all being told this crucial, urgent info for the first time - in the Maron lobby and not by email, or phone. I asked one of the staff, point blank, "so this means that a reservation I made three months ago that was confirmed does not guarantee me a room at your hotel tonight?" The staff member shrugged and said yes. I referred to what was happening as a disaster (I used stronger language than that) and the staff member had the pique to tell me that, actually, it wasn't a disaster, and that he would be unhappy to see me seek accommodations elsewhere. He spoke to me as if I had a guaranteed room at the Maron waiting for me (I didn't, according to him!). I rebooked with another hotel on the spot, and several other guests did the same. Other people I knew that stuck with the Maron that weekend told me that they booked them into not-yet-finished rooms. And that the staff on site didn't actually know which rooms were still in progress and which weren't. So they were walking guests upstairs to their rooms, telling them they could look at the room first and then decide if they wanted to stay in it. This meant the staff asked the guests to do a room inspection on their own and check that the heat was working, that there was electricity (lights, televisions); that there was a working phone in the room; that there was hot running water and that the toilet was flushing properly. I don't know if these guests were getting room discounts for the "privilege" of playing Deal or No Deal with their Maron rooms and checking them out with the staff watching them do it. Another friend who persevered and lucked into a room there told me he had a room with no hot water, no heat, and a flooded bathroom before he got to the room so the rug outside the bathroom was soaked. Not a great look. In addition there was no coffee station or amenities of any kind (I suspect they didn't have any staff including cleaning services that weekend). Walking into the hotel was like walking into a tomb, or the Overlook, or the set of The Sting where they were faking a false front hotel. I understand that the property didn't want to close for renovations because of optics and because the Riverbank didn't want to lose business. But their decision to work through it was disastrous. It ruined 2 decades of customer trust in the blink of an eye for many regular guests that were hosed that weekend. Including me, and dozens of other people that chose the Maron because of my recommendations over the years. As I mentioned, I organize an event in Danbury. More than half of this group that comes to Danbury to attend travel at least 60 miles or further to do so. Many come from as far as the tri-state area, New Jersey, PA, Vermont, Maine, and DC. As part of my promotion for my events I send out listings of suggested local vendors - restaurants, shops, services, etc. that I say are reliable and worth supporting when we visit. The Maron was on that list among other area hotels as usually the top suggestion. After the trainwreck of an experience in March 2025 I cannot recommend this hotel unless and until their renovations are complete. Maybe. But honestly, it would be difficult to want to come back after the terrible first impression the Riverbank brain trust gave long time Maron customers that weekend. V unprofessional.
