This review is about the Ethan Allen store but also is a 'fan letter' for talented interior designer Val Hartl who is on staff there. Working with Val was as joy-filled an experience for professional interior design and home goods buying as we've had across the six cities we've lived in with eight homes among them where we worked with skilled independent interior designers. Rewarding for us too as Val guided our decisions for an update of our home office and in the process we discovered finishing touches of pillows and ottoman for our great room.  Also spirit lifting for us because Val made it easy and fun as she created design schemes to consider with options assembled for us to take home to look at in our spaces. The result is something that feels "...just like us only better..." in ways we could not have envisioned without her help.  Val's listening and communication skills are great as was her patience and good humor in dealing with a couple "at the end of their designer rope" by the time we walked in the showroom.  (In our defense, this was after dilly-dallying with an independent designer who across three months and several hundred dollars fee had delivered to us no usable result.)   It required only a couple of visits to the Ethan Allen design workroom in a week's time and with Val's creative guidance we had selections made and orders placed for area rug, chairs, upholstery fabrics, leather and even details, Val sees every detail, like finishing trims on custom pillows.   If I could still dance (we'll get back to this), I'd do a happy one.  FREE DESIGN SERVICE = PRICELESS:  Design service is free here and it is also priceless for homeowners to work with an experienced professional.  The drill at any Ethan Allen is when you walk in the person at the showroom desk will welcome you and if you don't have a designer appointment scheduled, they will call up a designer to offer as much or as little assistance as you want as you browse the store. You can call and schedule an appointment with Val, and we recommend it, but she assures us that all of her colleagues at the Boise store are great to work with if you walk in. Fer shure. So a designer in store can also help provide insight that the web catalog cannot, not just for furnishings but also fabrics, area rugs, lighting and window coverings. BRAND / BUYING AUDIENCE:  Perched at the upside of mid-range or low side of up-range for price point with products for buyers across all ages and stages of home ownership from starting out to feathering family home nests to scaling down in empty nester mode and with styles from mid-Century to contemporary to transitional to classic. But Ethan Allen was not a brand we used much in other homes in cities where we lived and shopped furnishings in premium brands above this price point working with independent interior designers to make it easy to do given my limited mobility. (I have had multiple sclerosis since college days and umpteen decades later mobility and energy are both challenged and design professionals did the 'legwork', metaphorically and actually, to narrow down options.  There's the "if I could still dance..." tie in from opening.) Ethan Allen wasn't on their professional radar (the brand didn't offer incentives to 'the trade') and that means only occasionally was the brand on ours when buying on our own.  But limited access to quality furniture options in Boise led us to the Ethan Allen here in 2016 and the good product and customer care experience then led us back now. LOCAL STORE OWNERSHIP MAKES THE DIFFERENCE FOR CUSTOMER CARE:  This is one of very few Ethan Allen stores that are not corporate run but with local franchisee and the proof to customers of local ownership is sometimes in the pudding of problem resolution.  To share example from our 2016 experience when a handsome leather ottoman arrived with welt seaming problem the store offered apologies and immediately proposed the option of a leather tradesman fixing the seaming or having the item replaced.  We chose the latter and they let us use the original item while we waited on replacement to arrive.  Very nice. This kind of customer care supported by local ownership makes all the difference. If you have heard or read online of bad experiences with Ethan Allen service elsewhere, those are likely corporate run stores. Here local owner calls the shots. All good. ACCESSIBILITY: Accessible parking spaces alongside the building meet ADA standards. For the most part furniture in displays is spaced to maintain 36" clear as ADA requires - and is more comfortable for all shoppers. Loo is accessible. I have been shopping with Ethan Allen for over 10 years. The two main stores I used were corporate owned and in Scottsdale and Chandler Arizona. We moved to Boise last year and purchased about $7000 worth of furniture and this year about $3000 worth of art. We were not happy with two of the art pieces (which were about $700) and asked to return them. I was told I would be charged a 30% restocking fee and basically was advised by the designer "you should have used our free design services." We were told unceremoniously by the store manager they would not waive the $200 restocking fee regardless of how much we have spent at EA or planned to spend (had been looking at about $13k of additional purchases). What I have learned from this experience is a) don't purchase from this store as it is not corporately owned and you will not really receive a high level of customer service or grace. b) Stick to corporate stores like RH.com in Salt Lake, Utah or Pottery Barn (Boise) who do offer a high level of customer service. One of the reasons we shopped at EA was the excellent customer service we received in Arizona. The quality as some reviewers have discussed is not really any better than Pottery Barn particularly in their "wood" products. We purchased a 'teak' outdoor coffee table and two matching chairs (were going to buy the matching stools but will not be doing this now) and they are already 'chipping'. Good quality teak should not 'chip.' I agree with some of the reviews about poor customer service in store -- I found that up until you buy something the sales people in Boise are very attentive, after that good luck finding out when your product has arrived. Lead times for products are very long. I don't recommend purchasing from the Boise store. Unfortunately they just don't give you much leeway if you want to return something which is not the case at corporate stores. Let's face it sometimes you may think something will work in your home but it doesn't -- most stores allow returns with no penalty. RH is one store that excels at free returns even when it means shipping large items or picking them up. This experience with Ethan Allen Boise has unfortunately been strange and very negative -- the store/manager lost the sale of a $1500 (I cancelled a still in process piece after the debacle over the restocking fee) art piece and future purchases of $13k for a $200 restocking fee. I worry they may need the restocking fee more than the sale of furniture. read more

I have made 4 separate purchases of living room furniture from Ethan Allen Boise over 20 years. My experience is this. Two of the 4 purchases were big problems for me. They use high quality material, fine workmanship then poor design and no quality control. In fact functional design control is Nada. Staff is always friendly and willing to help except they have no trained service personal to deal with design and function problems. Boise staff consists of sales and delivery people. I will not shop Ethan Allen anymore, Pay Top Dollar and then be sold design problems straight from the factory . read more

The results were amazing and the furniture completely transformed the room! Sita suggested fabrics and colors I wouldn't normally think to consider normally. We have nothing but rave reviews for our experience at Ethan Allen in Boise. Sarah Eggert was our design consultant and she had such a vast knowledge of the products and listened to all of our needs. She made suggestions that perfectly reflected what we hoped to achieve. The result was stunning and we love it! When we encountered problems with the quality and workmanship with the sofa, she was very responsive in resolving the issues. She worked with her management to resolve the problem quickly and to our satisfaction. She maintained constant communication with us so that we knew what was happening. His furniture, fabric and rug choices have really enhanced our personal style and made furniture shopping fun again! The quality of Ethan Allen furniture is superior to all the other brands available in the Boise area. All of the furniture is well made, sturdy and beautiful, master craftsmanship make them classic and durable for decades. I love that I can order what I see in the showroom or customize the fabric to meet my decorating needs-so many choices, it's good to have a great designer to help me choose. I didn't actually order anything from Ethan Allen. So, I can't speak to the customer service beyond the show room floor. However, the representative I dealt with when looking for a particular bed had an air of arrogance and snootiness about her that is usually reserved for the LA or NY scene. It was totally unexpected, inappropriate and off putting. As I recall, she kept mentioning that her "big clients" in Sun Valley were the majority of her business. Frankly, I could care less. I was ready to buy something and spend cash that day, but I simply refuse to do business with people with that kind of attitude. On a side note, I was impressed with their selection and customizability of their different lines of products. Overall, the quality was high, but the customer service was a hurdle for me to get over. read more

Over 20 years I've had consistently exceptional service at Ethan Allen in Boise, from designers to receptionists to delivery crew. The furniture is well-crafted and durable, and the furniture craftsmen obviously take pride in their work. Most recently, Design Consultant Jennifer Quinn was a delight to work with. I ordered a custom sectional. Was told it would be ready in 3 months which would have been early January. We're still waiting for it. There have been delays for fabric and multiple unexplained delays. When I call, I have to speak to my designer to find out what the most recent delay is. I am told I am unable to talk to the manufacturing department. When I called corporate customer service I was referred back to the store. It's now scheduled for March 7 I hope I eventually get it. This is a $7000 sectional (ridiculous, yeah I know). I expect better customer service and feel like I paid for it. Update: I received the sofa on 3/9/16. It is beautiful and very high quality. The delivery company did put a small hole in it but they are fixing it with minimal inconvenience and no charge. I am very happy with my couch. That said, the entire experience should have been better. read more

If I could rate Ethan Allen less than one star I would!!! We ordered a cabinet from the Boise store Dec 31, 2016. We were told it would be about 90 days. After March 31, 2016 we got NOTHING, not even an email from EA. So mid April I called sales lady told me it would be on the next truck. Well it is May 20, 2017 no calls, email or cabinet. We realize that our little ole cabinet is not much BUT we will NEVER ever buy anything from Ethan Allen again. read more

Five stars. We bought a dining room table about 8 weeks before Thanksgiving. We were told there was no guarantee of a Thanksgiving delivery. We understood that but would take our chances. The table was exactly what my wife wanted. When you buy furniture at Ethan Allen you are buying quality furniture. It isn't premade and in a box somewhere. We learned this week that the table will make it by Thanksgiving. Woo Hoo. The bad news is that the chairs won't make it. But it was the owner who called us and she told us that she was very sorry and she would make it right. She went above and beyond to help us have a Great Thanksgiving with our family. I am reluctant to say what she did because it was beyond our expectations and a business owner can't always do these things. Suffice it to say that we are still thrilled with Ethan Allen furniture and the Voise location is amazing. read more

After ordering some furniture at this store (desk, two custom leather chairs), I started searching the web for some reviews of Ethan Allen, which made me pretty nervous. There's some biting criticism out there about the quality of their more recently-made pieces, and about their customer service when a problem is encountered. I was very relieved to find that the customer service I received from this store was excellent, when I ran into some trouble with the quality of their pieces (since resolved). The desk was delivered with some damage (to the edges of the desktop) and defects (lock mechanism installed incorrectly and made worse by a shoddy repair at the factory). The delivery personnel were the ones who noticed the damage to the desktop, and volunteered to leave the desk with me while we waited for a new top to be delivered. I noticed the problem with the lock after they left, and called the store, where the very nice lady said that the delivery personnel would inspect the lock when they installed the new top. After a little while, a new top was brought out to the house. Once again, the delivery personnel noticed that the top was damaged/defective, and decided not to install it (it was worse than the first). They inspected the lock, and determined that the whole desk should be replaced. They left the desk behind so I could continue to use it until a new one was delivered. In a reasonably short period (given that this is a furniture purchase), a new desk was brought to the house. It mostly passed inspection (it was missing a few pieces of hardware, which were cannibalized from the previous desk and installed by the delivery personnel). Once completed, the delivery guys took the old one away, and left a complete, undamaged desk in its place. There were thankfully no problems with the chairs (beautiful and undamaged on the first try). So, in short - this store has great customer service, and continued replacing and replacing the defective furniture that their factory sent to them until I was satisfied. read more

Truly exemplary! We previously purchased a pair of swivel chairs and were tickled with how beautifully they turned out. The designer worked tenaciously to find exactly the right fabric to match the existing room. The result was stunning. But the true genius of the Ethan Allen team became apparent on a subsequent order which did not play out according to script. When a custom upholstery order went wrong, Ethan Allen immediately turned the challenge over to their project manager Julie Bonner. Julie then moved heaven and earth to "make it right". From consoling voice messages assuring Ethan Allen's commitment to our satisfaction, to basically redoing the project, enlisting additional designers, personally overseeing each step of the redo, answering each of our calls in s timely fashion, and continuing to assist with a subsequent order, Julie personified excellence artistically and practically. The end result was in a word, magical. We could not be happier with the Ethan Allen products, the Ethan Allen personel, and the Ethan Allen commitment to actual customer service. We started buying furniture for our kids from them 20 years ago when we would visit Boise. We went to EA in search of new living room furniture (just moved here and found that our furniture would not "fit" the smaller scale). We had a great experience, and I owe it all to Jena Burkman, a particularly talented designer at EA. She is a great listener (which translates into someone who picks up on styles you will want to live with for a long time!) , and has a fabulous sense of color and space. Jena worked around two pieces we wanted to keep, and helped us select a smaller scale sofa, rug, coffee table, side table, lamp, and chair for the living room. She kept us informed of each piece's arrival time, and asked if we wanted it delivered (or wait for additional pieces to arrive). I probably shouldn't say this in case Jena is not always able to do this, but she met the delivery people for each arrival at our home! She wants to see how each piece looks, and she cares about whether you like/love the result. Just a sidenote -- we don't live in a huge home where you might normally expect this sort of service -- she just cares about every customer! Really disappointed to arrive at the Boise, ID store ready to buy only to find it open to Private Invitation customers only. I have purchased with Ethan Allen in the past, different state, $$$$. I had 2 sets of furniture , 2 full rooms 11 pieces picked out and Ethan Allen was my first choice but now I am taking my business elsewhere as I am ready to buy right now. You might be thinking just come back at a later time. I have limited time off that does not corresponds with their business hours. By the way, there were no customers in the store when I arrived. We are downsizing after many years and weren't sure what we needed to make smaller spaces look comfortable and like the home we have always wanted. I looked at most all furniture stores in the area and finally stopped in at Ethan Allen in Boise. I was lucky to have been able to meet with Monica Lange one of their many designers. Monica is knowledgeable, respectful and truthful. She has a unique ability to make shopping for furniture fun! She is such a creative person who seems to be able to put colors and styles together in such a way that she makes something difficult for me look easy and you end up loving it! I am so happy with the new looks we created together. I never felt pressured or like my opinion didn't matter. She is such a good listener and helps you create beautiful rooms full of great quality, timeless pieces. I can't believe we ever even looked anywhere else for new furniture. Disappointing customer service from Ethan Allen. I would not recommend purchasing anything from Ethan Allen if you would like to receive your furniture in a timely manner or kept informed about the status of your order. I was expecting superior customer service as Ethan Allen claims to offer high-end furniture and design services. My husband and I ordered a leather sofa and ottoman from Ethan Allen in early September and are still waiting on the ottoman to arrive. The customer service in the beginning was excellent, once we placed our order and put half of the cost down we were informed that our sales associate would contact us within 7-10 days and let us know when our items would be ready for delivery. After 10 days and no phone call, we called to see when to expect our items. Our sales associate failed to call to provide us an initial update and also failed to call to inform us that the items would not be coming in on the subsequent anticipated dates. When we called to check the status and ask why it was taking much longer than expected their response was that the furniture is "made by humans." In fact, the only phone call we ever received was to schedule delivery while we were out of town and request that we pay the balance in full before receiving the sofa in our home since they would have to hold the item for so long since we were unavailable for delivery. We finally received the sofa, but we are now more than two weeks beyond the second anticipated delivery date of our ottoman and have not received any updates from our sales associate and when I called they were unsure when my ottoman would be ready. I will not purchase anything from Ethan Allen in the future. read more
