Unfortunately I have one major complaint. The Takoyakis were not fresh and hot. They came out very fast which is surprising considering how long it usually takes to make them. I can only assume they were pre-prepared and finished to order. You could argue that I took pictures but I only needed about 5 minutes for that and all the Takoyakis I had in Japan still burned my mouth even after that time. These here were warm and could be eaten as a whole which I would never do in Japan! SERVICE Lovely service. The staff also explained the different Takoyaki variants on your plate at the table. ATMOSPHERE Small and simple restaurant. I decided to sit at a table outside because I felt it was nothing special. RATING If my Takoyakis were hot and "fresh" it would have taken me back to Japan instantly. I think when you put an item on the front of your menu, you should give it your best even if the customer has to wait. I will gladly wait thirty minutes or longer for hot and fresh Takoyakis. They still get my recommendation!

I used to live in Japan and am resigned to eating random quality sushi in Europe, but this is best I've tried in a long time! True, the chefs are not Japanese, but they make a big effort in food preparation and presentation. The rice is good quality and delicately flavored, the nori is crispy. The menu has a nice assortment of white fish like hamachi and tai and is a mix of traditional pieces and fried/cheese rolls that are popular in Europe. They even flambé the eel and other fish in true Japanese yaki style. The setting is lovely, it's a converted alcove beneath the S-bahn, directly off the SW corner of Savignyplatz. They do things Japanese style here: take a seat at the bar and order directly from the chef! They will carefully prepare each plate fresh, rather than leave it on the little boats. Our miso soup was a little sweet, but tasty, with tofu and wakame. Plates are served with two nigiri pieces, like in Japan. The portions are very generous, the fish is carefully cut. At 3e/plate on the lunch deal (and Sunday eves), this is incredible value. I'll be coming straight back next time I'm in Berlin!

The anime murals on the walls and doors were so well done that I felt transported to a different world. I started with a glass of wine. The best part was that I started with a Pinot noir sample, and it wasn't what I really wanted to drink. They let me change my drink to a lovely full-bodied dry Cabernet, which was fabulous. I ordered the Lachs / Avocado / Mayo and the Jakobsmuschel / Tobiko / Avocado. The rolls were very easy to eat. I assume that mayonnaise on sushi is a theme at the Catch. Next time, I'll try the sashimi. Overall, the experience was memorable in a good way.

Salmon soup was really a thai lemongrass soup with a couple of pieces of salmon in it. Drinks were fairly priced; white wine was oaky but not too bad, and the saki was surprisingly good given the lack of choices. Sashimi bowl was overly flavored: you had to scrape off the sauces and sesame to get to the fish flavor. The fish was nice, but the menu lied: there was no eel in the bowl. There was a lot of lettuce, however. Speaking of lies, the waiter absolutely refused to honor Yelp's free Prosecco with checkin offer. In many cities, this place would be a disaster, but I grade sushi in Berlin on a curve, since this isn't the town for that cuisine, and I did appreciate the atmosphere of Zen, despite some of the shortcomings of food and service.

Ladies and gentlemen: This is Heno Heno my new favourite japanese restaurant! They serve a handfull of dishes which are on point. My favourite was (when I still ate meat) the gyu-don which is a rice bowl with a beef stew. Add the onsen tamago (poached egg) to get it authentic. The bowls are in three different sizes and for a super small price. I haven't checked all their dishes yet but my friend who has been in Tokyo for a year likes it there. Escpecially for the semi-authentic interior. For vegetarians I recommend the veggie donburi which is rice topped with a spinach salad and seaweed in sesame. Love it here! Not mind blowingly good but a decent home cooked meal which in all fairness is what they are trying to do. SERVICE Staff was nice and friendly. Standard Japanese service which is a good thing. ATMOSPHERE Nice restaurant. Simple, a bit dark yet warm. RATING Four stars because even though they do Japanese home cook meals I think even in that specific area the flavors can be approved.

This would be a great date spot. The waiters and waitresses were just the right amount of attentive. And now onto bigger and better things--the sushi. Coming from a Los Angeles native, I really do have to say that the sushi was absolutely on point for the price. We ordered the sushi platter for 3, and let's just say that they were far more generous than I had expected. The portion was enough for two relatively hungry guys, and one slightly peckish girl. The sashimi was great quality, and most importantly, fresh, and the rolls were very flavorful and nicely wrapped. The only roll I couldn't have cared less for was the cucumber roll--but then again, who ever likes the cucumber roll...The presentation was great, and to be totally honest, I'm not quite sure if it was the company or the food, but the dining experience overall was absolutely solid. I only wish that I remembered what rolls exactly came with our platter, or how much exactly we each had to fork up, but I guess that's indication of a great dining experience, is it not? When you willingly open up your wallet post meal and dump anything and everything you have onto the bill, you know that the food was good. For the sake of a more comprehensive review, I'll head back and give the platter a second go...definitely don't mind if I do, and neither will you! Udagawa is my homeboy…read more I don't even see why I should justify my love to this place since I am not even willing to accept any other rating for this restaurant. Udagawa serves a lot of japanese homecooking and bento boxes. During lunch time you can order great bentos with a miso soup. This place it not trying to impress you with fanciness. Their focus lies on the serious food game they play and damn they play it well. Their Katsu for example is piece of perfect crispyness which is just on point. No fancy garnish just the real deal. Ok I kind of lied about the fancyness since their bento does look kind of pretty BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT. They are good because of the taste and not because of their look. (And you can't blame bento for being simply concepted this way) I have only very few japanese restaurants I'd recommend and this is one of them.
