Showed up for my appointment and the desk person told me that my insurance (Aetna) only covers standard eye exams every TWO years. I have never heard of this in a lifetime of getting eye exams. I said that this sounded wrong to me because every insurance plan I've ever had includes one eye exam per year--that's why they're commonly referred to as "annual" exams. The guy said, "Well, the doctor will still see you today, but you'll need to pay for everything upfront." I said that I won't do that because it defeats the purpose of having insurance. Of course at this point, they've already got my insurance. I didn't have time to call and check on my plan/policy there in the store; so I just left. Just checked, and of course my insurance covers one eye exam per year. Maybe it was just a mistake on their part, but it happens to be the type of "mistake" that is often used as a tool of insurance fraud. Awful.

It pains me to write this review of Dr Cheng. He has an excellent bedside manner, explains things…read morethoroughly and seems like a genuinely nice person. Unfortunately, my eye exam last month resulted in a significantly weaker prescription than my previous one from nearly two years ago. Dr Cheng explained that this can happen with aging, so I had glasses made from the new prescription. The distance correction turned out to be too weak. I returned for a recheck. Dr Cheng was patient and kind, especially because I had some difficulty judging the choices during the subjective refraction. The revised prescription was slightly stronger in sphere in one eye, but had substantially weaker astigmatism correction, particularly in the right eye. I had another pair of glasses made ... and these are even less usable for distance vision. Both prescriptions are much worse than what I have from two years ago. I am not placing all the blame on Dr Cheng, since the subjective refraction depends partly on my responses. But after I specifically reported that the first prescription was too weak, I do think the recheck should have produced a prescription that was more clearly validated before I left. I have now paid for two sets of glasses with progressive lenses ($$$) that I cannot use and am back to square one, scheduling another exam with a different optometrist. YMMV, but unfortunately this was my experience.

With a dozen reviews on Yelp, the majority of which were five stars, I chose Fabulous Optical. There are no walk-in appointments because the doctor is not in daily (at least not yet). Luckily, I snagged an appointment for the following week. Funny enough, hubby and I arrived super early (despite the rainy weather). We were greeted, instructed to complete the intake form, and have a seat. The receptionists (both the one who booked our appointments and the one who did the intake) were incredibly personable. It did not take long before we underwent our eye exam with Dr. Lev Mazniker. Short yet sweet. He was conversational and took the time to explain the health of my eyes. We later proceeded with trying on frames to make our final selection. I will admit that choosing a pair of frames is my least favorite part, but the saleswoman was on hand to tell us which shapes and styles worked best with our facial structure. She even shared the two payment options and worked out a discount since our insurance covered little to nothing. I misplaced my glasses and the manager was kind enough to use security footage to track its last location - without hesitation. Thank you for going above and beyond to provide stellar customer service! Even my mom, who is also a customer, said she had no complaints during her appointment weeks prior.
