My father's work require steel toe shoes and he has been going to Penn Lee since 1992. It's a real nice "mom & pop shop", family owned local business. It's a little hidden gem in the Minor Mills section of Wilkes-Barre. This could be its only fault if you are not familiar with the local area. Fast-forward to present day: They no longer carry Nike sneakers, or any sneakers for that matter. However, they have a beautiful selections of shoes and boots. My current favorite selection is their offerings of Clarks Originals. When you walk into the store, the main floor has a showcase of men's and women's casual shoes and boots, and men's dress shoes. From the main floor, if you turn to left up a slightly inclined ramp, you will find yourself in a narrow section of the store. There they have a plethora of a selection of steel toe work boots! If you work in an industry requiring steel toe foot wear, Penn Lee is the place to go!

However, this does mean I get to go first. When I was a kid, well over 30 years ago, my mom and dad used to take me to Gino's to get shoes. Back then, they were just one of a number of shoe stores in the Back Mountain. Today they are the last, staying around with good quality and great customer service. First, a warning. Gino's specializes in kids' shoes and athletic shoes. They do have some men's and women's shoes, but not the selection you would find at a department store. But in the types of shoes they specialize, I have not seen better quality, and the selection rivals many children's shoe stores. On our last trip there, I was impressed by the sheer variety of toddler and kid's Crocs they sold. What is even more impressive about Gino's though, it the customer service. Even though the store was busy when we arrived, we were helped relatively quickly. My wife and I really wanted to get Crocs for our little boy, but the pair we wanted was too big in his size and too small in the next one down. The salesman actually took the time to show us why that particular style was cut different and pointed out the others that were not a standard cut either. He must have known how everyone of them was cut, because he suggest one color, that fit perfectly. How many stores still have sales staff that know the product that well? Finally, Gino's remembers its customers. As we were checking out, I said hello to the owner. After not seeing me around the community for over 20 years, he still remember who I was, and we had a really nice conversation. Does it get any better?
