White Mountain Peak is the highest peak in the White Mountains of California, the highest peak in…read moreMono County, and the third highest peak in the state after Mount Whitney and Mount Williamson. Elevation 14,252 ft Distance: 14 Miles roundtrip. Out and back. You start at an elevation of 12,000, so you're only going up around 2,000 - 3000 in elevation. It's kind of tricky for me to figure out since you're going up and down a few times on the trail. The hike is pretty easy for the first 3 -4 miles. There isn't too much of an elevation gain. This part of the hike reminded me of the opening scene from the Sound of Music. The last 2-3 miles are tough. You're basically just going UP. The terrain is similar to hiking West Mt Baldy (lots of loose gravel, tons of rocks). But not as bad. I only say this because I'd slip more hiking Baldy, and I didn't slip once hiking White Mountain Peak. You can see the summit from far away. And on a majority of the hike the summit is in your sights. This could either motivate you or de-motivate you... knowing how much further you had to go. Hiking this trail was an experience. When we were there, it was pretty windy. We didn't see too much wildlife. I only saw groundhogs. *I think*. And we saw a lot of sheep at the Research Station 2 miles from the beginning of the trailhead. Since the elevation at the top of White Mountain Peak is at 14K, you may experience elevation sickness. There is no bathrooms at the top of the mountain but there is one clean one at the start of the trail. Getting to the hike was pretty difficult as well. For 22 miles, before you get to the trailhead you're driving on extremely rocky off-roading type of roads. If you're in a small four door sedan it'll take you an hour to drive that. I would suggest taking an SUV.

I did just because I wanted to do this! You can camp at the trailhead, the day before the hike to acclimatize. We camped on Sat, and started hiking at 4 a.m, and came back to the trailhead around 11 a.m. It is windy on the trail and the top. I put downjackt and hood all the way. They were welcoming and assisted promptly with adjusting our reservation so we didn't have to move sites mid-stay. The campsites are well-maintained. Steph and Tatiana scurried about keeping the restrooms spotless and preparing sites for the next campers. They too were very friendly and helpful. The campground has many wonderful sites, some by the creek, others more private on the outer edge, still others with open areas where families and children can play. It's an advantage that about half the sites are first-come-first-served. East Fork Campground is our favorite Eastern Sierras place to camp and this was our third trip.

Changing rooms and showers (no soap allowed).No balls or inner tubes allowed but small noodles are ok. All employees were friendly. Overall an awesome place. It'll always be a gamble, so if you're planning to camp for the weekend, come EARLY to try and net a site. I stayed in site #2, which is stupidly large in comparison to the other sites. There are spots for 2 cars, and we even had our own private trail leading to a babbling river. There is potable water, clean bathrooms, and even a few deer sightings! For $23 a night, we were living large. If you forgot anything, there is a market by Glacier Lodge a mile up the road selling the essentials (and apparently, BBQ on Saturdays). However, it was our camp hosts, David and Takota, who really made the stay special. David gave us a personal tour of the grounds, and we got to see his "Twisted Forest," his crystal collection, and he pointed us towards some natural hot springs! We even got his mixtape...aka CDs of the local radio show he hosts...that proved to be awesome to listen to on the drive down. Takota is David's very cute giant dog pal. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back in the Fall season to witness the color change!

If there's one…read morebit of practical hiking advice I can offer, it's to camp here for at least two days before hitting the trail if you live at a low elevation. I was not acclimated and it made my hike unexpectedly grueling. It's an absolutely beautiful hike, and I wish I was less focused on simply breathing! The entirety of the campground is surprisingly fancy as campgrounds go. Lots of manicured public spaces. But the store always seemed closed which probably had something to do with the government shutdown happening at the time. Directional signage within the campground (to specific site numbers and to the trailhead) is pretty awful and I wasted a decent amount of time trying to find my site. I got up pretty early to hit the trail (just as the sun rose), and had to use AllTrails to point me to the trailhead. In early Oct, it can get pretty cold up there so setting up camp at 4:30pm wasn't ideal. Try to get there earlier bc it cools down really fast. My specific site (26) was really private and very nice. It looked just like the pictures on Recreation dot gov. It sits beside a bubbling little stream, yet mosquitoes were never an issue. It was also the most level and tidiest tent pad I've ever had the pleasure of sleeping on. There was a major drop-off between the car pull-in and the campsite, so I had to be extra vigilant about not breaking my neck during the frequent back and forth loading and unloading.

Aspen trees for miles…read more I always make a point to stop here just to witness the Aspens changing color, a breathtaking transformation that typically peaks in late October. It's absolutely worth the short detour. Located approximately 20 mins from Yosemite's entrance at Tioga Pass. These golden groves are located just before the entrance to the campground. While I'm not much of a camper myself, I did stroll through the site to get a feel for it just incase I ever change and become a camper. It's serene, quiet, and beautifully nestled alongside Lee Vining Creek. The area is shaded by trees and offers amenities like restrooms and picnic tables. If camping is your thing, I recommend checking out their website for more details. Even if you're not into camping, catching the Aspens in their autumn glory should be on your list if you're in the area between late October and early November.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon without a reservation, and began to mildly panic one we learned most of the sites had already been taken. Luckily we came across some super friendly Aspen Campground regulars, who invited us to share their double site which just happened to be situated in a prime spot right next to the beautifully bustling river - SCORE! The Big draw to Aspen is hands down the fishing. It just so happened that right before we arrived the local hatchery dropped a load of fresh trouts, ready to be hooked! This was my first time fishing, and I was able to catch (and Cook) my very first fish! If you like to fish and you like to camp, going to Aspen is a no brainer. The trees are also large and plentiful, so if you come, don't forget to pack your hammock!
