I started seeing Hayden shortly after moving to San Diego five years ago. My mom had just died, my…read moremarriage was falling apart, I was fairly newly sober, and I was struggling with childhood trauma issues. On top of all that, the anxiety and depression that had plagued me my entire life was rearing it's ugly head. I had already been to three other therapists in San Diego, but i just couldn't find the right fit. I found Hayden on Yelp and was hopeful that he might work for me because of his great reviews, even though at that point I was feeling hopeless that I would ever find the help I needed. I'm not sure what we talked about that first year. I don't think I really said much to Hayden at first since I was working on trusting people and as a rule, Hayden doesn't talk much - his style is more thoughtful listener who empowers people to find their own truth. What he also does - and I'm not sure quite how he does it - is to create an incredibly safe, non-judgmental, and professional environment for healing to take place. He held space for me for months until I was ready to really confide in him. During that time I sometimes didn't like him (because I didn't like anyone then!) and I was sometimes annoyed that things weren't happening fast enough. Or that they were happening too fast! But once I was convinced without a doubt that what I sensed from the beginning was true - that Hayden was a knowledgeable therapist that genuinely cared for his clients - I was able to really start making progress and start healing. I've continued to see Hayden over the years, sometimes more frequently than other times. He's helped me to get over childhood trauma, grow my company, become financially secure, stay sober, deal with high maintenance kids, and now he's helping me through a divorce. As much as he's counselled me through so many different aspects of the human experience, probably the most valuable thing that has emerged through my work with Hayden is that I've discovered an inner source of strength. And joy, acceptance and self-love are now part of my day-to-day life. I can't recommend Hayden highly enough! If you are feeling hopeless, desperate, anxious, depressed, and/or struggling with anything, he just might be the therapist that changes your life.

Throughout my life, I struggled to find happiness, hope, and a sense of self-worth. Over the years, I sought help from numerous therapists and other mental health professionals, but nothing seemed to make a lasting difference. Eventually, I lost hope that my life could ever truly change. Then a friend recommended Sayaka, describing her as an extraordinary therapist. Despite my previous experiences, I decided to give therapy one more chance. That decision changed my life. In just 10 sessions, Sayaka helped me accomplish something I had never believed possible. For the first time in my life, I began experiencing genuine happiness, hope, and an appreciation for simply being alive. Her compassion, insight, understanding, and remarkable ability to connect with people are unlike anything I have ever experienced. She helped me recognize that I am worthy of love and happiness, and she fundamentally changed the way I see myself, other people, and the world around me. Today, I wake up happy, look forward to each day, and find joy in even the simplest moments. My relationships and interactions with others have changed dramatically because of the new perspective she helped me develop. I have known many exceptional people throughout my life, but Sayaka stands apart as someone truly extraordinary. I cannot promise that everyone will have the same experience, but I can say without hesitation that working with Sayaka was the most transformative experience of my life. There are people who make a difference in our lives, and then there are those rare individuals who change the very meaning of life for us. For me, Sayaka is one of those rare individuals. I will be forever grateful.

Dr. Sayaka has literally been nothing short of a LIFE CHANGER for my husband and I, individually…read moreand as a married couple together. I am aware her main focus is sexual therapy, but she's also an excellent individual and couples relationship therapist, so please consider her if you need that, as well. A note for those afraid of or think therapy is not for them: Luckily, my husband and I have never had hangups about seeking professional assistance off and on when we get "stuck." We've seen a variety of therapists throughout our relationship from about year #2 on. That sounds like we have major issues, but we really don't. We are 16+ years into our very happy and successful monogamous relationship. We love and respect each other, we are each others' best friend, and we enjoy each other's company more than anyone else's on this planet - and always have. We live, work, and spend ~23 hours of every day together - BY CHOICE. No relationship is or can be perfect, but that hasn't stopped us from trying! When we identify an issue that keeps popping up and can't seem to work it out ourselves, we seek help to get past it. We love and respect each other so much that we know it is important. We aren't egotistical enough to think going to therapy is weak or that if we can't work it out on our own, it is not meant to be. We realize that couples who have issues and choose NOT to seek help are the ones that don't value their relationship. We value ours so much that seeking help is a no-brainer and it has always served us well. Having said that, of all the therapists we have seen, Dr. Sayaka has been the best, hands down. She has helped us both individually and in sessions together to fix some MAJOR life-long issues we each have that affected our relationship together and with others. There has to come a time when you "graduate," as she calls it, and while we both would still enjoy fine tuning ALL of our issues, Dr. Sayaka gleefully told us one day that we've graduated and there is no need to come in for regular sessions anymore. In our experience, this is unheard of; almost all therapists are happy to continue to take your money as long as you want to give it. Dr. Sayaka was goal oriented in her approach and knew further sessions would have diminishing returns since we had both grown so much individually and together over the 1.5 year we spent with her. She pushed us out of her nest! Between the two of us, we worked on issues such as letting go of childhood trauma, abandonment issues, alcoholic tendencies, anger, unrealistic expectations, getting closer and deeper emotionally, being vulnerable in general and with others, trust, not needing other's approval and wanting everyone to like you, respecting individual time/needs, perfectionism, and more. We covered a lot of ground and we each have grown a TON. And, so yes, sex is also much better since we are closer. It's all actually pretty amazing. You have to be willing to show up, do the work, and be active in your growth along the way to see the amount of change we have seen. But, it's worth the investment in time and money if you are at a point where you are ready for REAL change. Many people WANT change, but aren't willing to work for it or move through the uncomfortableness needed to achieve it. We were both there and willing, so we saw the results with her guiding us every step of the way. Now that we have graduated, we still practice the homework she assigned us, which is key to having lasting results. We love it though and it doesn't feel like homework; it feels like we get to play fun games together and benefit from them - a win-win! We even proactively share some of the exercises with our friends because we have seen such amazing results from them. I could go on and on about Dr. Sayaka, but in short, if you're stuck, you want change, are willing to work for it, and don't know where to start...RUN (don't walk) to Dr. Sayaka. She will greet you with her warm compassion and smile. She will be direct, present and compassionate. She will sit silently holding a space for you as long as you need and even cry with you through the uncomfortable times and the great breakthroughs. She is emotionally intelligent, as well as very intuitive. She is NOT a normal therapist; I'd put her up against anyone out there...and I have been to MANY therapists in the past. She is the one who has "fixed" us, individually and together, for now. We both have an easily accessible armory of tools to refer to when our instincts kick back in and we could not be more grateful to her for that. Will we likely see her again? Yes. Because we don't have expectations we won't have something in 5 or 10 years that comes up as our lives change that will benefit from an outside impartial professional. But, I can honestly say that I look forward to that day. If you are not growing and changing for the better, what are you doing with your life? And with growth, comes growing pains. It's OK. GO SEE HER.

Dr. Goldstein and the entire staff at San Diego Sexual Medicine (SDSM) are absolutely incredible! I…read morespent nearly five years in and out of generic OB-Gyn offices and pelvic floor physical therapy before finally making an appointment at SDSM and receiving the care and treatment that I had been longing for. I was diagnosed with Congenital Neuroproliferative Vestibulodynia at my very first appointment. I greatly appreciated the immense amount of time they give new patients not only for thorough testing but also for education. My first appointment was three hours long, one for testing, one for education with Dr. Goldstein in his office, and one with their in-house professional sex therapist. Specifically for my condition, I value their holistic approach to sexual health and medicine. Making sure their patients are not only physically healed, but since many of us -myself included- are diagnosed with sexual trauma and PTSD, they make sure we are healing mentally as well. It took Dr. Goldstein three hours to diagnose what other doctors had dismissed for five years. I cannot convey the significance of just receiving a diagnosis. This condition had left me emotionally drained for years. It ruined my wedding night because I had no idea why sex had hurt me so much. Educating me on my condition empowered me and allowed me to finally talk about my condition with confidence. All of this goodness and we haven't even covered treatment! My initial blood work showed lower levels of testosterone which can also impact sex so Dr. Goldstein opted to treat that first before moving to surgery. I really appreciated this outlook. He was in NO way pushing surgery as a money grab. If a less invasive approach could work, he took it. After a few months with the testosterone supplementation and no improvement in my condition, I was scheduled for surgery. Dr. Goldstein and his staff do a phenomenal job at preparing you for surgery. Your surgery packet explains everything from your medication regiment, cost breakdown, doctors note, to post-operation care. If asked, he will provide you with names and telephone numbers of other women who have gone through the surgery. Known as the "Vestibulodynia sisters," these women were immensely helpful and considerate to take the time out of their schedule to help other women (like myself) walk through the same process. As someone who is now listed herself to be contacted in case any future women have questions regarding the surgical procedure, I can tell you that we are ASKED to do this and give PERMISSION to Dr. Goldstein to provide our phone numbers to future patients. This is not required of us, and if someone should choose to keep their information private, SDSM would happily do so. He only provides are names and phone numbers, nothing else, and should a new patient reach out to us, it is entirely up to our own personal discretion about what health information we would like to share. Words fall short to commend each and every single woman who helped me when I was first walking through surgery. We live in such a sexually charged culture that experiencing painful sex can often feel incredibly isolating and to know I had this "sisterhood" helping me, encouraging me, and preparing me for this major surgery was so comforting. Lastly, no, they do not accept insurance . But if there is anything I've learned about our healthcare system in the last five years of realizing I had something majorly wrong with my body, it's that our healthcare system is broken. I've been better served by doctors who do not accept insurance than by ones who do. As I mentioned previously, it took Dr. Goldstein hours to do what no other doctor(s) had been able to do in YEARS. If I had just gone straight to SDSM to begin with, I would have saved myself, and my marriage, copious amounts of time and money. Medical procedures are expensive, yes. But, would I trade back the financial investment for more hours crying on my bathroom floor, panic attacks in the bedroom, and inability to look my husband in the eyes?? NEVER. Dr. Goldstein and his entire staff at SDSM gave me back my sex life, my dream of having a family, and renewed intimacy with my husband at nearly 30 years old. 10,000,000 gold stars.
