It's still a popular tourist attraction and you can see it all from the sidewalk. The interior design is a mix between art deco, pink neon, the Chrysler Building, Italian modernism, a chic speak easy, Trump Tower and a velvet Palm Springs mid century living room. After looking at a few different firms online, I got good vibes from The Rental Girl (TRG), a boutique real estate agency here in Los Angeles, that also handles apartment searches. I liked the fact that the company is on the smaller side (around 20 or so employees, I believe), so that you really get their full attention. And for me personally, it was also a big plus to support a women-owned business. For apartment searches, they offer a couple of options: 1) You can sign up on their website to access listings on your own. or... 2) They also offer a concierge service, where they take inventory of your specific needs and wants and then do a customized search for you, which includes setting up walk-thrus, handling paperwork, and basically taking charge of all the less-fun aspects of looking for a new apartment. Their concierge service is made up of a team of people who each cover a different area of Los Angeles. For the area I was looking in, I was assigned a terrific, friendly dynamo named Itza Campos. She took great care of me every step of the way, serving as a sounding board (and even a therapist at times, lol) as we considered various apartments, before landing on just the right one. It was a true pleasure working with her and I really can't thank her enough for all the help she gave me! TRG concierge service isn't inexpensive -- it's equal to the price of one month's rent on your new apartment -- but I have to say that I consider it money VERY well-spent. Yeah, something with low ceilings and paper thin walls. Life would have been miserable. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Then in a last ditch effort, I contacted Gil at 213 to see what he could do. He sent me a few emails full of listings that might fit. He knew which places had actual bedrooms and which ones didn't. He also had the inside private listings that you can't just easily find on your own. The place that he found us was great. We never would have found it without him. He showed me some nice lofts that I didn't see on Craigslist. There were other agents who also specialized in downtown live/work loft. I talked to one guy who told me to wait a week before receiving listings and offer loft tour by paying some fees. However Gil doesn't ask any fee. He only listens to what you want and will send you several lofts information with photos right away. When you need to see the loft, he shows up there on time. As I'm Japanese and always on time, I was impressed that he was always there before me. At the end, I didn't get the loft through Gil. I wish I did because he was so nice and professional.
