If you want to do it right, get only what you need, and save money, go with EPX for a whole-house generator. We have a large house in Alpine, CA,. San Diego Gas & Electric turns off the electricity about four times a year, sometimes up to two days, when bad Santa Ana Winds can down pole wires. These blackouts were painful. I contacted EPX and two other big names for a quote on a whole-house Generac generator. If you read Consumer Reports and other reliable sites, Generacs are the best and most cost-effective A received a phone call within 10 minutes from Jerry, the sales guy. Jerry was friendly, knowledgeable, precise, and understandable. He knows his engineering and cost-cutting solutions. He's funny, too. He designed for me a system that gives me what I want, while he cut corners on pricey things I didn't need. His system and price were much better than the big guys. Jerry keep saying, "You don't need that, let's design it right and save money." (My family and clients will tell you that I usually hate to be corrected.) Since I'm a construction attorney and General Contractor, I frequently watched what the installation crew was doing. The foreman Nick, Omar, and Justin were pleasant, fast, and clean. Nick's descriptions were clear and precise. All gentlemen. Everything was completed as promised and on-schedule. As you may know, on-schedule hardly ever happens in the construction industry. You couldn't even see where they ran the LP gas line through the lawn. Mikaela, in the office, has the happiest, can-do-now voice, and is on top of the details and schedules. I have a lot to say and all of it is good. I don't remember ever having had a better experience with a contractor, and I've dealt with a lot of them in the last few years, both at our home and another location we own. I was referred to EPX through the Costco website, which offers whole-home generators, including installation. This is a particularly good deal because, at the end of the process, you get a 10 percent Costco shop card for the total price of the installation, including tax. Pretty good bonus, but after comparing bids from other contractors, the EPX contract price turned out to be the lowest even without the Costco discount. After I requested a referral from Costco, I got a call from Louis (not using last names online to protect privacy) and he came to my house and scoped the project. He was polite and friendly, and answered all questions promptly and clearly. That was true throughout the project whenever I had a question and wasn't sure whom on the team I should ask. Either Louis had an answer or he promptly referred me to someone who did. In general, one of the best things I liked about EPX is that they always responded to queries in person, by phone or by email, and did so promptly and clearly. That was true of the entire team, both in the field and in the office. Louis came up with a very detailed plan--more detailed than I could understand. I had a bunch of technical questions and Louis answered them promptly and clearly. I then got a bid from another reputable contractor and decided to go with EPX, largely because they were cheaper--much cheaper when I factored in the Costco discount. They gave me a completion date about 4 months out, which included drawing plans, obtaining the necessary permits scheduling the crew and delivery of the generator, digging the necessary trenches, running the gas line and electrical cables, re-configuring the electrical breaker panel and hooking everything up. I thought this was a reasonable time given that I had bought a honking large generator (48kW) and wanted to locate it 100 feet from the gas meter and 50 feet from the breaker panel. I insisted on that remote location (see picture), which involved removing a lot of greenery and digging through ground that was full of roots and rocks. No problem; no extra charge. The projected completion date was July 23 but the generator was up and running more than a month early (mid-June), despite some delay in the project to accommodate my schedule. As I said, the generator is big (see pictures) and the access to the installation site was difficult (more pictures). EPX drew up plans and got a permit with no involvement on my part; the permit fee was included in the contract price. As expected, digging the trenches for the gas and electric pipes was difficult, but the EPX teams came out and worked diligently and cheerfully for about 2 weeks, spread out over about a month, to accommodate my schedule and coordinate delivery. Everything went smoothly and the teams in the field were invariably polite and cooperative. They had to shut down the power a couple of times and gave me lots of notice and coordinated with my schedule, as I work from home and have lots of zoom meetings and needed access to my computer for my work. I want to give a shout-out to the team: Field-team leaders Jorge and TJ, and team members Justin, Blake, Joseph, Alex, Matt and Travis. They were cheerful, hard-working and as unobtrusive as possible given the scope of the work. I also had nothing but pleasant and helpful interactions (by phone and email) with office-team members Kendra, Ashley, Kellsey, Mikaela and, of course, Louis. I hope I didn't forget anyone, but no matter when I called, whoever picked up the phone immediately recognized who I was and either had an answer or quickly put me in touch with someone who did. Just a few nights after the generator was put in, we had an unexpected power outage The lights went off for about 10 seconds and then went back on like nothing had happened. It was entirely seamless. The rest of our bock was totally dark. One other thing is the warranty: Generac includes a 5-year warranty but EPX extended it to 10 years. The other contractor I considered also offered a 10-year warranty but it was conditioned on getting a service contract with them, which cost about $1000 a year. That was one of the big financial considerations in my decision to go with EPX. If you are thinking about a backup generator in Southern California, you owe it to yourself to give EPX a chance to bid for the job. EPX installed our 18KW generator over the last two days. The product was tested out, and worked even better than expected. The worksite was left clean and presentable overnight, and the finished product was so carefully installed as to look almost invisible -- like it has always belonged here. Phil and his crew left a pristine site, and were easy to ask questions of, and quick, responsive, and accurate in their answers. Also, it turns out, EPX will continue to monitor the health of the machine! Since we live in a manufactured home, the permitting process had to go through State, County, AND fire reviews, which took an awful lot of time (they've been snowed under since the outbreak of fire season), but installation took only two days (forecast had been up to 4 days) and the power interruption was only maybe three hours (forecast had been 4 - 6 hours). Long story short: permitting takes a loooooong time, but the product is worth the wait and price, and the installation process is everything you'd hope for. Phil and his installation team are great, and the front office staff is helpful and well-informed. read more

We've been in the market for a generator for about a year and have spoken with several companies. Solar too. I depend on life and death oxygen equipment and power outages are definitely no bueno. In both cases we never really found a comfort level with any of the generator or solar companies interviewed. Something was always off. And you just can't be too careful, especially for a big cash outlay, a giant investment like this. In the end we opted out of the solar conversation and focused 100% on a stand-by generator. That's where EPX came in. I got a call from Jerry Prince. Right off the bat I knew he was a straight shooter and based on my knowledge from previous sessions with other providers I know my stuff and rapidly discovered Jerry did too. Instant comfort factor established. He even came in lower than the other guys and offered a lot more value. For example we didn't intend to power the entire house but that's what we ended up doing because it makes so much sense. They also fast-tracked our installation date. It was supposed to be in May but we requested sooner and they had an opening and May became March. Fantastic! Two day process. Install guys were easy and conscientious. They walked us through the entire process, capped off two sprinklers for us when installing the dedicated gas line for the Generac, worked around our schedules (twice) when shutting off our power temporarily on Day two, and did a wonderful job cleaning up when they were finished. Now in the event of power outages we have no more worrying about being without oxygen, which is such an incredible relief I can hardly explain it! Seven year warranty. EPX remotely monitors the generator to make sure all things are working properly and it maintains itself with a six minute automated cycle every other week for maximum performance. Recently had a 26kw Generac generator installed at our property by Jorge, Rob and team from EPX group. The whole installation only took 3 days and they done a really professional job with the installation. Communication was great keeping me informed on required power shut offs, job completion, as well ensuring I got all my required essential loads on the 200amp automatic service disconnect. I don't recomand this company since they have not been honest with me , they received my money and promised to deliver and install the Generator in 4 to 8 weeks. It took them almost 1 year to get the product and when they came to install it at my home they didn't want to install it, they took it back promising me that they would give Full my money back they never did. They are crooks, I am taking them to small claim courts. I bought them from Costco and Costco says that they cannot do anything about it and Coastco said they are crooks as well. read more

This is an unsolicited review for which I thought was essential to anyone interested in acquiring the services of Energy Product Experts (EPX). I am a retiree of a large California Consumer Protection Agency that regulates the activities of Real Estate/Subdivisions for the entire state. As our society is becoming highly exposed to the possibilities of our energy resources being attacked by foreign sources, my wife and I decided that it was time to explore the acquisition of a standby/backup electrical power generator to protect our home electrical system. After much research, we chose EPX to install a whole-house Generac generator. From the very beginning of the installation process, we could not have been more pleased with the entire EPX crew. These gentlemen were the epitome of what consumer service professionals should be. This EPX crew consisted of five personnel, including Philip (the site supervisor), Alex, Giovanni, Jorge, and Tyler, all whom were very impressive in the execution of their respective assigned duties. This was a very cohesive team working together to complete their tasks. The worksite was kept clean and the men were friendly and very cooperative in answering any questions we posed. The job took two (2) days for completion and we honestly hated to see them leave. At the conclusion of the job, I personally thanked each crew-member by name and let them know how much we appreciated their service. Working with EPX was such a wonderful process. Every person from the office to the install team did an amazing job. The biggest shoutout to the install team with Zach. We had a tricky install due to our layout and plus it was extremely hot weather. The team never complained and genuinely got along. They showed up first thing in the AM and stayed till end of the day for 2 days. They even returned on the 3rd day to make sure everything was buttoned up. Totally disappointed with the service. Called this company through Costco for whole house generator. have to leave a message with the live answering service, received the phone call from the company 5 days after to book an appointment a week ahead for the middle of the Saturday. I made changes for that day to meet the sales person between 3-4pm . Received the call from sales person at 2:45pm telling me he is almost 2 hours away from me. I asked the sales guy for his office to call me for reschedule since I couldn't stay home and wait for him. So far its been a month haven't received any phone calls back to reschedule that appointment. Seems like they dont want my business. Beware of this company! My story is weirdly similar to Amelia R. who posted a review on this site. Signed the contract Sept. 2022 and was told to expect installation by early December. After providing a city permit to expedite the installation, and waiting six months hearing excuse after excuse, and going through a power outage, I told EPX that I wanted to cancel the order. They sent a crew out three days later without making an appointment and on a national holiday. There was no one home, so the crew left. They said that to cancel, I would have to pay $2500 for the (unscheduled) missed appointment plus a $1500 restocking fee. Since I had gone through Costco, I contacted them, and explained that it was illegal to charge for an unscheduled appointment. They agreed and after getting one check that was well short of the agreed amount, Costco went back to EPX and I eventually wound up paying the $1500 to get out of the installation. Because of their foot dragging, we also would have missed out on a Generac offer for a warranty extension. read more

I started discussing my energy needs with EPX group in August of 2022, I was approved for financing and signed my contract in September of 2022. According to the sales person I was not going to have to get a permit unless I wanted to ( I chose not to) and my contract stated that my project would be completed by mid-December. The sales team did not communicate changes or additional information needed in the planning process and. I often didn't know they needed information until I called them to check on the progress. I was later told that they "had" to pull a permit, and this is the reason why my project had been delayed, of course after I called very frustrated that I had heard no updates. My permit was not approved until late January 2023, by which time my financing cancelled out. When I reapplied, I was not approved, and I tried to cancel the project since EPX had broken the contract, but was threatened that I would be charged for the permit (that I didn't ask for) and 20% of each item that had to be restocked. After lots of back and forth the sales Manager Joe asked me to apply for a Synchrony bank card which I did, and my project was finally started in March. I tried contacting Synchrony to find out what the plan would look like and what the monthly payments would be but found out it would be up to EPX Group. Once the project was done, I tried to pay my bill using the Synchrony credit card and was told I would be charged an additional 3,000 dollars for using a credit card. After much back and forth it was discovered that it was the sale manager Joe's job to set the payment up. I was sent a document to sign and no additional information on how the payment would work or alternative plans. Unfortunately, I learned after the fact when I did the math that the payment, I was assigned was far too high for my family. I called Synchrony to see what could be done and they again said that only the company with whom I had made the purchase could change the payment plan. Needless to say, three months later, after several delinquent payment reports were made on my credit, I still have no resolution to the issue with my plan. I have called this company more times than I can count and have a slew of emails in which I have tried to elicit solutions and movement on my project. It is a month of more between responses from Joe each time he desirdes to grace me with a response. I have to say that the front desk ladies are very nice, and the installation team was great, but Joe and his sales team are drastically unprofessional and do not care about customer service or taking accountability when they are in the wrong. I attempted to speak to Joe's supervisor or somone above him and was told that there is no one above him. I had to enroll in a hardship plan with Synchrony in order to resove this issue and discontinue the hits to my credit. I would never recommend this company to anyone who needed energy solutions. I have reported them to both Generac, and The BBB. read more

Long over due review. After initial frustrations due to supply chain issues from Geneac. My generator was finally installed a few months ago. Had our first power outage yesterday and the system worked flawlessly! Once power was restored, I did have issues with the system going back on the grid. Made one call to EPX and they got me in touch with the right guy to walk me through getting power back from SDGE. First thing this morning there was someone over from EPX to trouble shoot and make sure that it doesn't happen again. read more

I have had more experience with contractors than most home owners having built four homes myself. When it comes to contractors there are a lot of losers out there. EPX is NOT one of those. They recently installed a generator at our home in Julian and I must say everyone from Britney in the office to everyone of the techs that came out on the job were exceptional. After waiting one year for them to begin, I was informed that they could not install the generator to work with my solar installation as promised and that the generator could not be installed in the area designated in the contract. If this company were competent, they would have known both those facts, and disclosed them, before asking me to sign a contract and submit a deposit. read more

Contracted with EPX Group to install a PomCube NetZero Plus backup battery for my home. The vast majority of my contact with EPX prior to installation was with Kendra Thomas. The installation was performed by Jason and his crew. Phil was here for the inspection and finish work. I rate Kendra with 5 Stars!! What an AWESOME - OVER The Top customer service rep!! Immediate answer to my email questions regardless of the time. I would email a question at 7:30 pm and have her response before 9 pm same day. Another question at 7am with a response by 10 am. She really made the whole process very pleasant. She made me feel as if I was either the owner of the company or the most important customer they had. Both Jason and Phil, I also rate with 5 Stars. Both of their attention to detail, professionalism, courtesy, patience and genuine desire to make sure I was kept informed of the install process/inspection process. Both Jason and Phil were very happy to answer my 200+ questions about the install and operation of the battery. Their answers were clear and in terms I could understand. All three - Kendra, Jason and Phil not only met the definition of customer service but exceeded it to the level that they should be used as the role models for others to strive to emulate!! Because of my experience with them, I will be contracting with EPX Group to install a second battery. After a substantive supply chain wait, I had the Generac generator installed at the end of last year. Once the site for the generator was determined, the installation was prompt and efficient. However, the installer said we did not need a permit for the job and that was our first mistake. The generator was spliced into a breaker on our existing electrical panel. After their departure, this over load caused the bus bar in the panel to melt down and I lost all electric for the entire house and the generator did not even come on. I called EPX and they told me it was not their installation problem and to call an electrician. I called an emergency electrician out and they got my panel back up temporarily but had to disconnect the generator as it was over loading my panel. The electrician said you are lucky the house did not burn down. I then had to have the panel replaced because of the burned out bus board. This was a permitted and inspected replacement and the inspector said the generator should never have been spliced in like that on my old panel and that it would never have passed inspection. That panel replacement cost thousands of dollars and took months to find a new panel during the supply chain problem. I did not ask EPX to reimburse me for any of that expense. When it came time to re-hook up the generator, I asked my home contractor to do it at my expense, as I no longer had faith in EPX. Apparently, the battery in the generator went dead during the period that it was not on line so EPX was called out by my contractor and they came out and installed the battery. Even though the contractor related to the installer the problem they had caused and the cost and aggravation to the home owner, they still saw no problem with billing $405.50 for the battery installation($120 for the battery and the rest for their trip out to the house). I was so incensed, I called Steven to tell him they needed to write this expense off. He was extremely argumentative, said he would not write it off because it was between them and the contractor and that I should just stiff the contractor. He also gave me some nonsense about the electrician calling them to relate the problem to them and then telling them they did not need to come out because the electrician was replacing the panel. Steven thought this was a sufficient attempt on their part to remedy the situation and that the electricians instruction to not come out gave them all they needed to wipe their hands of the problem. I was unaware of this call and Steven did not see it fit to follow up with the homeowner. He told me that since it was over a year since the initial installation, the 1 year included monitoring was up and they were no longer responsible for anything. I asked why if they were supposedly monitoring the system, they had not called to say your system is off line. At the end of this I would say the "100% installation satisfaction guarantee" advertised on their website is a complete farce and that EPX is a good vendor only as long as you have no problems. The minute there is an issue they are argumentative and unresponsive. A company that stood behind their service would not only have written off minimally the trip for the battery installation, but would have offered an extended year of monitoring.
