Isn't it every patients dream to have your doctor's full attention and to leave not feeling like…read moreyou were just another number in a long waiting room line? Well, I finally received that care with Dr. Le. Hallelujah! At the end of December 2025 I had an appointment at one of Beach Eye Care's locations. My initial complaint was glare when driving at night, my eyes watering spontaneously, plus it was getting harder to read fine print. Welcome to middle age. One very important detail you should know about me is that I have a STRONG phobia of anything coming at my eyes or put into my eyes. I DESPISE IT!! Unfortunately, an Optometrist's office is the mecca of doing just that. Deep breaths. At this appointment they expectingly tormented my eyes with drops and machines until settling on a prescription for eyeglasses. Huh? I was unprepared for that outcome. Honestly, I felt a little bullied into buying them. Nobody really explained anything to me, and it all felt very transactional. Still, I picked up the eyeglasses the first week of January 2026. And sadly, I didn't notice any difference and my symptoms continued. I also got headaches at the end of each day. Not fun. Needless to say, my feelings of confusion and anger from my December appointment carried over until I was seen again the last week of February 2026. This time at a different Beach Eye Care location where I met Dr. Le. I admit, I was frazzled and threw mini tantrums in the doctor's chair. Both at the idea of spending money on eyeglasses I didn't think I needed and at the tests she was doing to my eyes. I know she was just doing her job, but again, my phobia can't be reasoned with. It's the worst! Although Le's patience and communication was surprisingly soothing and tampered down my ridiculous bitching. I've had dry eyes since my mid-twenties (I'm currently 42). In the past, doctors just prescribed drops (never over my dead body would I use those liquid torture bottles) and surgery on my tear ducts (which I did have, under heavy anesthesia, yet it wasn't successful). So, you can imagine my amazement when this doctor FINALLY explained my condition in a way I could understand with an approach I could actually use. Turns out I did need glasses I just wasn't trained how to use them properly. That statement might make me sound like a total dummy, but being my first pair, nobody told me the top half was for driving and the bottom half was for reading. How was I supposed to know?? Dr. Le continued to pull out all the stops! First, by holding a model eye where she pointed out different parts of mine that were being affected. Then she explained each of my conditions at length so I could understand what was actually happening with my peepers. She also used an iPad of images that my eye looked like from the inside and what it could look like if I didn't start warm compresses twice a day. Furthermore, her assistant put two videos on my phone to watch later (which was embarrassing for me because I had to have her do it. Technology, am I right?) which was helpful. What I'm trying to say is cue the singing choir and release of doves under a glowing light because these two were magical. If you ever need an eye doctor you MUST see Dr. Melissa Le. She is by far the best out there. She works at their Kemps River location on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday and their First Colonial location on Thursday. You won't be disappointed. (And again, I apologize for my outbursts. Sigh.)

I'm someone who processes out loud and changes my mind approximately 15 times (especially with glasses!), and they were endlessly patient and supportive through all of it. We even ended up chatting about dogs, furniture building, sewing, and hobbies--which somehow made the whole experience feel relaxed and human instead of transactional. Even though I'm circling back to switch colors, I felt nothing but encouragement and kindness the whole time. Mikaela and Ryan truly listened, helped me think things through, and made what could've been an overwhelming decision actually fun. If you want knowledgeable people who are also just really pleasant to be around, these are your people.

they don't respect patient time My appointment was…read morescheduled for 11:45 AM. When I initially booked the visit, I clearly informed the staff member that I had an important meeting at 1:00 PM. I was assured that there would be plenty of time to complete the appointment, especially since my meeting location was only about 10 minutes away. I arrived early at 11:35 AM and was taken in at approximately 11:50 AM for an eyesight evaluation, which was completed by 12:05 PM. After that, I was left waiting in the exam room until 12:45 PM without any communication or update from staff. During this time, I could hear staff members laughing and socializing in what appeared to be a lunch break. I found it highly unprofessional to leave a patient waiting for such an extended period while staff were disengaged, without any consideration for the patient's time or schedule. Due to the delay, I was forced to leave in order to avoid being late for my important meeting. When I informed the receptionist that I needed to leave, I was asked to wait briefly. Another staff member then came out and said the doctor was ready to see me, but by that point, I could no longer stay without risking being late. I was told that someone would call me to reschedule the appointment; however, I have not received any follow-up communication. Additionally, I would like to make it clear that I do not expect my insurance to be billed for this incomplete and unsatisfactory visit. If a claim is submitted, I will dispute it. This experience was both frustrating and disappointing. I hope you will address these concerns to ensure better time management, communication, and professionalism in the future.

The technology that they have is crazy futuristic. CVP Surgery is the place to get any eye surgery, they spent some serious dollars obtaining the latest technology available. Today I reported at 09:35 for a 09:50 appointment and finally saw the doctor at 11:40. During this two-hour period, I spent 3 minutes getting checked in and checking acuity and pressures. I spent another 3 minutes getting eye photos and an hour and a half waiting. This is typical for that office. When questioning the delay, much of the staff was flip, unconcerned, and/or clearly annoyed. My vision prevents me from driving so I must impose upon others for transportation, and those kind people are also adversely impacted. I see other aged patients with canes, wheelchairs, and creeping at a snail's pace and see the discomfort on their faces as they wait and wait and wait and wait. It is sad. I hear the sarcastic comments of other patients as they wait and wait. When I discussed this with Dr, Rappaport, he told me that the staff is supposed to give regular status on the wait times but I have never heard jack. Never a status, never an explanation, and God forbid, never an apology. Such a status report would at least allow the opportunity to get a refreshment or reschedule in extreme cases. Had I treated ANY of my customers with such rudeness in my business dealings I would surely be unemployed and bankrupt. This is shameful. I have witnessed other specialists resolve this situation. It COULD be fixed, but as long as the money keeps flowing in, nobody seems interested respecting very people that who are responsible for the Tidewater Eye Center existence.

The reason for the poor review goes against the Riverside Hospital where the surgery was performed. During preparation for the surgery, the nurses and aides at the Riverside Hospital push you to get a "little" anesthesia for the surgery to ensure that you're comfortable during the procedure. Now, NO ONE from Cullom & Farah's office talked about anesthesia during the surgery and the need for it, but I thought - hey this is the same stuff you get at a Dentist's office so what's the big deal! Months later, after all the bills were paid by my insurance, I was hit by an additional $1,500 bill by Riverside Hospital! Surely, the staff at Collum and Farah should have been aware of what Riverside Hospital was doing and discussed the need or lack of anesthesia before I had the surgeries!
