We've had a Vanworks Switchback since October 2024, roughly a year and a half. We've put about…read more13,000 miles on it, including a few thousand miles on rough USFS and BLM roads. We've spent just over 100 nights in it across all seasons, with nighttime lows as cold as -25F and daytime highs above 100F. It's our third campervan and by far our best. Ours is a 2024 Sprinter high roof / extended body (22'9"). We worked with Barry to figure out the layout and options that would work best for us. We ended up with a modified/customized version of the Switchback 170". The layout is super comfortable and plenty roomy for our family. The built-in features (kitchen cabinet with drawers, sink, and fridge, overhead cabinets, bench seat, flares, bed, water tank, etc.) are all high quality. They are lighter and sturdier than the built-ins in our previous vans. The bamboo wall/ceiling panels and countertops are sturdy and look downright classy. And the Espar diesel heater kept us toasty warm through two ski seasons. We had a few minor issues with the battery system early on, but Barry and his team took care of them quickly and without any hassle, and the electrical system has been reliable ever since (solar panels, 5000 W-hr battery system, 12V and 120V outlets, lights, etc.). Barry also helped to trouble shoot a few other minor issues with the heater, one of the vents, and one of the after-market windows -- he walked me through everything by email and over the phone and we quickly resolve the issues. I've been very pleased with Vanworks' customer service. Vanworks was easy to work with throughout the purchase, design, build, and payment. Clear communication, transparency, and responsiveness throughout (along with patience with all my questions and persistence in working with us to finalize our design). I highly recommend them.

We hired Carter's Care RV, owned by Scott, to upgrade our 5th wheel to a lithium battery system --…read moretwo 300AH LiFePO4 batteries, an MPPT solar charge controller, an inverter/charger, and a battery monitor with a smart shunt from Redodo. What should have been a straightforward upgrade turned into one of the most stressful and expensive mistakes we've ever made. From the start, I explained that we were new to lithium systems. Scott said he had only worked with Victron systems but claimed he had the additional components needed. He promised to follow up the next day, but I didn't hear from him until I reached out again three days later. His estimate was a single lump sum with no breakdown of labor, parts, or taxes. He originally said the job would take one day. Instead, it took two and a half days because he repeatedly left for other obligations. I asked multiple times for his hourly rate, and he finally told me he "just knows how long a job will take." Major Issues After Installation After the installation, the battery monitor showed the batteries at 16AH and 16%, estimating 62+ hours to fully charge. Scott told me to leave the 5th wheel plugged into the house. The next day, nothing had changed. When I contacted him again, he said the batteries were in a "deep sleep" and needed to be "shocked" with a jumper pack. The real issue was that Scott never programmed the battery monitor, even though I provided the full installation and programming instructions twice. When he returned, I handed him the instructions again, and he admitted he did not know how to program the Redodo monitor -- something any RV technician should research before agreeing to install. He also incorrectly advised me to never use lithium batteries below 50% and to keep the RV plugged in at all times. This is simply not accurate for LiFePO4 systems. Safety Hazards Found by Another Shop A few days later, we took the 5th wheel in for unrelated warranty work. The technicians found multiple serious safety hazards caused by Scott's installation, including: No heat shrink on any cable ends, leaving wires exposed Incorrect color identification -- no red/black heat shrink to mark positive and negative A negative cable with exposed wires touching the metal frame Batteries not wired correctly in parallel The negative cable to the inverter/charger only halfway attached Improper 110V AC wiring -- connections not in junction boxes, bare wires left exposed A 30‑amp wire spliced into a 50‑amp line, wrapped in electrical tape, and left on the floor The 30‑amp wire from the inverter not tied into the breaker box correctly Multiple exposed wires and wires touching the frame, creating fire and shock hazards The inverter/charger was installed upside down. When I pointed this out to Scott, he insisted it was not upside down -- even though the printed labels and words were literally upside down. He left it installed that way. Damage to Our RV Without asking, Scott rummaged through my husband's workbench for screws to secure wiring. The screws he chose were too long and went straight through the subfloor into our bedroom and bathroom, leaving five holes in our linoleum floor that cannot be repaired. Additional Costs We Incurred Because of Scott's unsafe and incomplete work, we had to pay another RV repair shop to: Remove and re‑terminate all battery cabling with proper heat shrink Correctly rewire components into the breaker box Properly label the breaker box Install a DC‑to‑DC charger (which Scott never told us was required to protect the truck alternator when using lithium batteries) Final Recommendation Under no circumstances would I recommend Scott or Carter's Care RV Service & Repair. The convenience of mobile service is not worth the risk. We learned this the hard way. The repair cost us our vacation money we had saved up.

Jack came to our house the same week we called and fixed our generator. We were impressed by his work so we talked to him about a leak in our bumpout that had made a big soft spot in the floor. There were other various things that we wanted to have done: extra storage shelves, new countertop, fix our ladder. We brought the camper to him in April of 2023 and he said he would have it back to us by June. So in June I asked him if we could have it back by the 4th of July. He said there was no way it would be done by then. So in October I asked him if it would be done by Thanksgiving and he said it wouldn't be possible. At this point I was very curious on how it couldn't possibly be done after 6 months so I told him in the first week of January, 2024 that we were moving to Maine in the spring and we needed the camper back by the end of March or early April at the latest and he said it would absolutely be done. I drove up to his house in the middle of March and it appeared that the camper hadn't been moved or worked on since we had dropped it off almost a year earlier. When I asked him about it he texted me back and told me the camper would be done at the end of March as per my request. By the end of April I still hadn't heard from him, so I began texting him asking him when I could get my camper back. He kept brushing me off, saying that the camper was done but he was putting on the finishing touches. But by the middle of May he still wouldn't give me a date to pick up the camper and at this point I was sick with worry because we were moving and we were packed up and ready to go and had plans all set to move across the country. So my husband went to his house the day after Mother's Day and it still hadn't been moved. Up until the very end he made me believe that it was done. The night before we were set to move to Maine we drove up there and the camper was all torn apart and nothing had been done. He put subfloor on top of the rotten floor and it was all spongy. All of the cabinets had been torn apart and strewn about his driveway. I told him to get his tools out of the camper and I was coming back to get the camper in the morning. When I came back he was still trying to put the floor down. I told him to get out and give us back our camper. It took him another 4 hours to do his halfway job, trying to salvage what, I don't know, and then his wife gave me the invoice. $8,500. What. The. Actual. F*$&!!!!! I looked at everything, incredulously, and asked as politely as I could, how in the world they thought this job was worth $8,500!!! His wife told me it took him 3 tries to put down the floor. Seriously?! How can you charge someone $170/hour for your work and you have no idea how to do any kind of construction. I'm not paying someone to practice their craft on my camper! If you don't know how to do the work, do it timely, do it right, then you have no right to make people believe you can do it and then never give them back their camper. So Jack and Bria, thanks for nothing because we were so heartbroken and sick over the whole thing that we ended up trading it in. We got a whole $24,000 on a trade instead of the $40,000 we could've gotten if you hadn't touched the camper in the first place. Add in the $6000 we paid you to destroy our camper, and the $500+ a month in hotel rooms we had to pay for in the last year when I was taking care of my dying father, another $1000+ to completely reschedule our entire move, and losing an entire summer of camping with my kids and family because of your lies and deceit, we're out about $30,000. I would love to take you to court and destroy you but I'll settle for the good people of Colorado running you out of business and their state themselves. Good people of Colorado and the rest just passing through or vacationing, do not trust this business!!!
