On return the line was backed up past Hertz, and the attendant who told me to stay behind an unoccupied car was saying that sometimes it just gets busy (at 2PM on a Sunday), and that he "can't move at 1,000 miles an hour". The agent who checked us in did a quick barcode scan, said "leave the keys on the dash", never asked about any issues, and ran away. Really not a good experience.

Easy and simple. After a belligerent customer tried to parse and debate the language of contract terms, a rep named Abbas got to us and was super friendly and helpful. Gave my reservation package that I confirmed a couple days prior, received my car, and learned it was a level better than expected. Very helpful for this trip. A quick four minute walk across to the parking facility and I was literally on the highway within 20 minutes of stepping up to the counter. Vehicle was clean and ready to go. Minor scuffs in a couple spots, which is normal for a rental in my experience. Ran well and like the drive for a large SUV. Return exchange was super smooth with no lines. The Budget rep was friendly, and I saw the folio receipt in my email within minutes. We were in line for flight check-in within 10 minutes of pulling in to return the car. Reviewed my receipt and no surprise fees. Bonus points from reserving from my Alaska Airlines account, too. Boom. I'll use these folks again next time.

Let's start with the good: It's aptly named. Definitely the cheapest car rental place out of ALB. I got a pretty new, clean, Nissan Sentra. Unlimited mileage. When I brought it back there were no hidden fees. I paid exactly what I was told it'd be. Now the bad: No counter at the airport itself. You have to wait outside at the taxi stand for the shuttle. This sucks in the winter (though I will say the wait was short and they did drop me right at my airline when I was flying back). The actual office is very cramped. There are desks right next to the counter. The guys were all playing grabass right in front of the customers. Ugh. They didn't walk around the car with me to check it out. They just pointed me in the direction and said where it was. Also it'd be nice to know how to work the radio and where all the controls are and such. The point is you get what you pay for. If you're a cheapskate like me you might not mind this agency. If you want to spend more money on a better agency you'll probably be happier. Also, pay attention to the fin print!

Then, paying with a debit card isn't good enough. You also have to provide a major credit card OR proof of your returning flight. I had to get out my laptop and sign into my email to be able to show proof of my return flight to get my car. Again, I was not happy. This was the most inconvenient way of renting a car that I have ever experienced. Next time, I will pay more or get an Uber. Dang it, don't be Thrifty! You deserve better.

They assured me that they stayed to cover customers whose flights were delayed- that peace of mind was important, although we didn't need to rely on it after all. The rental pickup is a short walk across the street from baggage claim. The agents were friendly and efficient. Did not try to sell me things that I didn't want. They provided an adapter for my phone cable and helped me make sure I was able to hook into my phone guidance before leaving. The car was clean and in excellent condition. Return was equally quick and easy. Good price and great experience.

It was only then that I found out that Dollar is not located at the airport but is ten minutes away and requires a shuttle. I called the shuttle at waited ten minutes for it to show up. The rest of the process was smooth. I was concerned about returning the car to the location and catching the shuttle at 6 am for my morning flight, but that went smoothly too. There are two issues that resulted in my low rating. The first is the off airport location. This is not made clear at the time of the reservation. I would expect both Dollar and United to have been transparent on that point. Second, the car rental location is understaffed. There is often only one person checking in customers and driving the shuttle. You can see how this could be an issue. However, the service was friendly and I had no issue with the car.
