When I dropped it off at the Shannon airport, it was all fine. Then I saw on my credit card bill I was charged over $1,200 in new charges and didn't receive any of the $350 back I was charged in Dublin. Also side note (a small dent shouldn't be $1,200 regardless of this situation!!!!) I have been trying to call and email for 4 days and there hasn't been any communication back to me, only that they are busy and will get back but the charges have come through. Overall a really terrible experience from an amazing trip. I'd love to take this review down if someone calls me back and we can get situated.

Unfortunately, a recent experience in Italy…read moresuggests some of their staff do not understand how easy it is to damage a long-established brand. On Monday 29 September we took out a Fiat 500 from your Firefly division at the Hertz desk in Lamezia airport. The staff member was a bit surly but otherwise efficient. The car was fine. Unfortunately there occurred an incident which any car renter dreads. On October 2nd our car was damaged and we took it back to Lamezia airport to replace it. Dealing with Hertz reassured us we were not dealing with any Mickey Mouse company. We expected sympathy and a swift settlement. Instead despite the police report, we were treated as if we had caused the problem (fire-damage possibly caused deliberately whilst we were parked outside a restaurant eating inside). Our experience was not only traumatic but was made unnecessarily unpleasant. Not only did we have to pay the full €1500 excess, but we lost the use of our car for our holiday. Initially, the member of staff refused to replace the car at all. Only after making a fuss did he relent and say we could take a car. However, this offer was virtually meaningless as we would be liable for all damage i.e. no insurance was offered at all. Neither would he let us take the damaged car back. His attitude was totally unsympathetic to our traumatic experience in a foreign land. He was surly and became positively rude and aggressive when we refused to allow him to keep the original police report (There was no problem with him keeping the copy he had taken). Given his stance, we obtained a car from a company that wanted our business. Worryingly, if the incident had happened outside a town we could have been left stranded in a foreign country through no fault of our own. We had not fire-damaged our car as the police report and numerous witnesses could testify. In potentially stressful situations you expect brands to live up to their promise to minimise these type of problems. That is why you purchase their product. I thought we could rely on Hertz to provide a service of a certain standard, not to give the impression they could not care less. I am sure you will agree that this type of behaviour is not acceptable to a company with your reputation and would want to ensure that other customers do not have to go through our experience. I look forward to hearing from you.

Car review After…read morereading the reviews of this location, I have to say they're a little unfair. I've rented from Sixt numerous times in the States, and have always had a positive experience. I went here knowing it would be different than how we conduct rentals in America. The main complaint is the excessive hold they place on your credit card upon check in, and this seems to stem from misunderstandings. The hold/deposit decreases based on how much insurance/excess you select. If you opt for no/low coverage, or want to use your credit card CDW, then yes, they will place a significant hold to secure the car. I opted for the €0 excess, so the deposit was only €100. I don't really blame them for this; if you have never driven in Ireland before, you WILL damage the vehicle. There is simply no room for error, and mistakes will happen. The first time I drove a car there, I ran into bushes, grazed the passenger mirror on a fence, and severely curbed the rims. Luckily, Enterprise didn't charge me for that; however, even in the States, Sixt is known for documenting every minor scratch you put on their cars - especially the locations with the AI camera arches. Anyway, as for the experience, I arrived to the Sixt counter inside terminal 2, and was pleasantly greeted by Adelina. I provided the necessary documents, she confirmed the protection/insurance selections, provided a free upgrade, and gave clear instructions on how to get to the vehicle lot. I took the shuttle over, quickly found the car, and was on my way. I was assigned a Renault Captur, and though it had high mileage, it was clean and in good mechanical condition. I put well over 1,200 KMs on it over six days, and got decent fuel mileage. Overall, you have to consider their point of view - renting to Americans who are accustomed to driving on the right, with roads considerably wider and easier to drive than Ireland's. As a result, they protect their vehicles for inevitable damages. Set your expectations realistically and protect yourself as much as possible, even if the protection is more than the rental; it's worth the peace of mind.

Basic insurance is €200 plus you have to pay a €2000 deposit!! Yeah €2000! If you choose no insurance you have to pay a €5000 deposit!! The middle insurance that only requires a €150 deposit added €600 to the cost! The fact that after you get off a long flight you are hammered with an hour of sales pitches then have to hand over basically all of the discretionary find for an entire vacation is ABOMINABLE! As for the car: total junk. The brakes scratched and squealed the whole time, the key was literally taped together and fell apart the whole trip. It was so frustrating to keep track of the pieces. RUN FROM THIS PLACE!

Even with that, I reluctantly gave the second star as my experience from pick up to drop off was without issue! This location is situated away from the airport and requires a shuttle to and from. Shuttle is easy to pick up at both areas and is constantly running. The line inside fills up quickly as every bus load has around 20 folks, all who are after a car, majority automatic cars. If that is the case, be prepared to wait on those busy weekend days, even if you reserved. We reserved an automatic and initially was told they were waiting, however got lucky as someone returned one as we were getting to the counter. Our reservation saved us, so I highly recommend reserving a car. Service at the counter was fine. They were not friendly, nor un-friendly. It was as efficient as it could be and ended with keys in hand. The car was solid. A Skoda model that got great gas mileage and had plenty of interior space. It was nice, even though odd, to be directed to return with the gas tank empty. Due to our limited amount of driving, I returned with half a tank, and weirdly suspect that has something to do with the additional charges. As for the return, all seemed fine. Pulled in, parked, got it looked at, printed receipt in hand and then hopped on the awaiting shuttle. None the wiser to the pending $250 that was coming my way without explanation mere days later. I have since reached out to Hertz twice, but have gotten no response at all. I am now disputing with my AMEX as an unauthorized charge seeing that I have gotten no response or detail as to the reason for the charge. These are always the same horror stories. Completely ruins the overall experience, which for the most part, was wildly successful and positive. Overall, I won't recommend to not rent from Hertz at all, but be mindful and cautious.

We rent all over the place and usually have to wait HOURS! So service and efficiency was great. Our little car was a happy little car until we drove out to Clifden midway through our trip. We hit a rock in the road and immediately got a flat. We were super lucky because we were near a hotel and had an area to pull over. Ireland is full of long stretches of narrow roads so luckily we didn't end up in a dangerous area. Anyways we were missing the tool to take off the lugnut protectors (small narrow tool). They are anti theft protection so we ended up having to borrow a screwdriver and pry them off. We would not have been able to do this unless we were near the hotel. Again, lucky. Got the donut on, drove the 33 min to clifden no problem. The next day we called budget to figure out what to do about the tire. They had us pay to replace it (80€) and reimbursed us at the end of the trip. Kept the receipt and had no problem. We had low tire pressure on the way back to the airport but that didn't result in any issues. Returning the car was fine but we only had half a tank for lack of time. 54€ penalty. It's 40€ for a full tank. Annoying but normal. Overall it was kinda expensive but we didn't book ahead of time so we should have done that!

DO NOT RENT FROM HERE!…read more And if you have rented from Avis Dublin and you are dealing with questionable / fraudulent damage claims, please share your experience directly at avisirelandscam@gmail.com. I am putting together a case against these thieves. Similar to others, I had a horrific experience and have got myself entangled in their lucrative claim circle. After immense pressure to get the expensive insurance, I declined and put down an absorbent amount for a deposit / hold of $5k. After I returned the vehicle, I received a note about damage to the bumper for a 26-50mm (1-2 inches). I disputed this claim immediately and truly know I did not cause this minor damage. Given the possibility that it may have happened while I had the car e.g. valet, while it was parked, etc. I asked for additional information to demonstrate / prove that it happened within my care. This local Dublin office has been completely unresponsive, other than to give me a ludicrous breakdown of the repair fees. No proof that it happened within my care. I would also note that the scratch is so minor, as seen in the picture, I or anybody wouldn't have noticed it at pick up for a rental car. You're typically looking for more material issues, not little tiny wear and tear that you see on every single rental car you've ever had. Now let's get into the breakdown in the charge for said tiny scratch. Not only did they have the audacity to put a bogus invoice together for around $1,600 usd, they also charged a depreciation fee for another few hundred, bringing the total charge to over $2k for a tiny scratch that they have no concrete way of even demonstrating happened while I had the vehicle. It gets worse. The same company they (Avis IE) went to for the auto body work quote is owned by the same gentleman who owns Avis Ireland!!!! So to recap, step 1. Over pressure on insurance., step 2. Make fraudulent claims of damage that is way over emphasized and really just normal wear and tear, step 3, get a quote from a company that you also own with rates that are just absurd., Step 4. hold people hostage because they took the option for a high hold on their card. Since I'm in it for the long game, in my next post, I will list out all of the articles of incorporation and research on the auto repair shop names, owners, pictures, etc. I see myself as a principled fair person, but what they did is wrong and I will take this as far as I need to go to expose them and get justice. Please contact me with your experiences avisIrelandscam@gmail.com.
