Reading the over 2000 reviews of this company, I'm not surprised by my experience albeit too late. The up charge selling of additional services along with the rapid talking by counter people with the difficulty of understanding leads to charges you may have agreed to, but did not fully understand. Add jet lag on top of that you have a bill that defies any other car rental company. I'm furious and prior to dropping off contacted customer service. Said I needed an explanation by Monday morning. Did everything they told me to do in an email. Never heard back. Called twice.Waste of time. If traveling from the US, suggest you find another carrier. Had two cars. I like SiXT as a car rental company, until now, they'd always done well by us. However, I've now had a run-in with their customer service due to a rental I picked-up at this location. The local staff was competent, communicative, and very much desired to make sure I knew everything I needed to know as an American renting a car in Ireland. They get 5 stars, but the company's customer care department gets zero stars, and will get a very stern letter from my lawyer if this keeps up. The problem is that the car they rented to me at this location in Dublin had an expired Tax medallion. I did not realize this until I was fined for that several days later. ---How could this possibly be my fault? In fact, how could I be expected to even look to see if this was a problem at the time I picked up the car? I have now had three go-rounds with SiXT over this issue. In the first attempt (in late May, via phone from the parking lot where I found the ticket on my windshield), the SiXT agent assured me they would handle it, and that I could ignore the fine. A few days ago (early July) I received a written notice - actually two of them - from the parking authority in that town, notifying me that the fine was overdue. How could they have gotten my name - and address - without querying SiXT for this information? In other words, SiXT was putting the blame for this on to me without acknowledging their responsibility for this issue. The other day I emailed a complaint to SiXT with supporting documentation to show this is an issue they must handle - including scans of the original rental reservation and the two notices. That complaint was rejected this morning, stating that I am responsible for the €60.00 fine, and would be assessed an additional $40.00 administrative fee if I did not pay it immediately. I am willing to accept that SiXT made a mistake and gave me a car with an expired Tax Disc: such things do happen, after all. But I won't sit still for a company that keeps on blaming me for its own error, and threatens to fine me an additional fee if I don't pay up! SiXT is making it really hard for me to consider using them ever again. read more

AWFUL - Really a terrible experience, renter - and especially tourist - beware. Our rental car died on day 6 of a 7-day rental. A mechanic came out to look at the issue and said he couldn't determine what the problem was so they'd organize a replacement by morning. At lunch - after having to cancel a tour we had setup - I had to call them after not receiving any updates from them. Despite them previously saying they'd get me a replacement car, I was then told when I got a hold of them that they could not get me a car in time so they instructed me to rent a car for the day and submit the receipt for reimbursement. After submitting the receipt for reimbursement, their customer service department did not respond to me for over two weeks. Before leaving Europe, I tried to call the help # I was given and was constantly told no one from customer service was available to discuss the issue and they would get back to me soon. It cost $4 per minute from my US phone to keep trying to get an update. I had not only the full price for their car rental on my credit card, but the replacement rental as well on my credit card at that point. When I was back in the US, they told me they were hoping to have a resolution soon and then did not respond to me for 2 weeks - after I had already paid both the credit card bills. 2 weeks later, they said their mechanic determined we left a door open or left something on that drained the battery so they would no reimburse me for the car I had to rent or the massive inconvenience I experienced over the last 2 days of my trip. This made no sense as I explained we'd been driving the car for 2+ hours with no issues, and moments after turning it off, went to turn it back on to move parking spots and it wouldn't start. This was just a really disappointing experience with a company who clearly did not care about the quality of service they were providing and suspected that because I was a tourist, could just get me to go away by ignoring me and letting time pass. It was very frustrating as now that I'm back in the US, I have little recourse other than to write negative public reviews and hope to help others avoid a similar experience. read more

There are so many other options at the Dublin airport, save yourself the trouble and do NOT book here. They have no concept of customer service. We arrived to pick up the vehicle within the hour grace period to find that they had already given away the car. Unfortunately, due to my mother's mobility issues, we had needed a very specific car and the one they gave away was the last one they carried. Their solution was to try and give us a car that would NOT meet her mobility needs. Once we found one that would work (it was manual transmission but my husband was able to drive it), they would not give us the rate for the cheaper, manual transmission and insisted on charging us the rate for the automatic transmission car which we did not get because THEY GAVE IT AWAY. The manager was completely unhelpful and basically said to go somewhere else. We were desperate for a car and decided to take it against our better judgment. They wouldn't even waive the daily extra driver fee we incurred as my husband now had to drive since my father did not drive manual transmission, but he was officially listed as the driver. Bottom line: These people don't care about their customers AT ALL. And sadly and shockingly were not willing to help out their disabled customers either. As I started in this review, save yourself the headache and choose one of the other rental car options in Dublin. read more

Suck! Even though my credit card verified that they would insure me, these guys refused it saying they needed a written letter from them. I checked with other people who used other car rental places and they didn't have this problem. That added another $200 to my total. The girl at the counter also lied about the cost of an upgrade that I luckily caught on my bill before I signed it. Your just better off going with another budget car rental place. read more

It was an hour long wait in line at around 1pm on a Thursday. It felt like it wasn't moving at all. It appears that at the airport terminal there may be an option to pre-sign a contract, and those that did that were taken care of pretty quickly. Once we actually got to the customer service counter, however, they were really good. Sebastian was very helpful and detailed. When he saw our bags and our car choice, he identified that it would not give us the needed trunk space. He switched out our car for a larger one with ample space. When we got to the car we saw it didn't have a trunk cover to hide our belongings, so the manager, Steven, came out to help and got us on our way! Would have had a much higher rating were it not for the long wait. The service was good otherwise. read more

It sounds like a reoccurring theme with this company having bad service. Like one of the other reviewers I was charged for "scuff marks" on the front bumper when I returned my car. The first question the attendant asked me is if I had taken out insurance for the rental, when I replied yes he said "Don't worry, there will be no charges to you". Two months later I saw a charge for $360 to Sixt Rent a car and later received an e-mail saying "Sorry for the delay in completing your damage assessment, here's your bill". When I turned the car in I did not agree to the damage assessment nor did I authorize deductions from my credit card. I've turned the matter over to my bank but for those who are thinking of renting here, RUN DO NOT WALK! to any other car rental company read more

I'd give a 0 star rating if I could. My sister's first time in Ireland. Went to the Sixt counter and they used the shadiest business tactics to get them to buy insurance. They wanted proof that the credit card company would cover it. When we showed the paperwork, it wasn't enough, and they demanded we call the credit card to ensure Ireland was covered. This after an overnight flight. I come to Ireland often, and no other rental agency has ever required this. One of the worst rental car experiences. Ever. read more

Disgraceful customer service. Arrived after red eye from California to the longest wait at a baggage carousel ever experienced -1.25hours. THEN the Sixt experience began! Of all the desks Sixt had the longest, slowest lines. Got to the front of the line and the guy about to serve us declares he's going on lunch break. He could see it had taken us a long time to get served. The we finally speak to an agent. I tell him we want to decline insurance as our Visa signature credit card provides primary coverage making additional insurance redundant. He asked us for a letter of coverage. Already exasperated I may have uttered wtf. I said he could call the number on the back of the credit card to confirm. He told me "I don't like your tone sir, if you don't change your attitude I'm not going to serve you". I asked if I could use his phone to ask my credit card to fax him a letter. He refused - forcing us to take $120 of insurance we knew we didn't need. My wife came over exhausted - he was just as rude and blunt to her. I said in customer service it helps if you show a bit of compassion and empathy. I think he had it in for Americans who think they're entitled to customer service and he was going to show who was boss. Called the customer service number "this mailbox is full". We did get a decent car. I now dread the rental return experience. I've used Sixt a lot and normally swear by them and tell everyone to use them - not after this debacle! read more

We rented a car from Sixt for two weeks in October 2013. Avoid them like a plague. When my flight was changed to arrive at Shannon Airport (where Sixt has no office), Sixt refused to cancel my rental. Instead, they told me I would lose my entire payment. So I had to drive from Shannon Airport to Dublin to pick up my rental. When I returned the car two weeks later, the Sixt technician who examined it told me there was nothing wrong. Today, I received a letter from Sixt informing me that they were charging my credit card over $200 for a damaged tire (even though I had purchased Sixt's "tyre and windscreen" coverage. I will never use these company again. I though I was getting a good deal. Instead of paying a bit over $500 for a two-week rental, my charge has grown to around $1700. Beward of this company. They will RIP YOU OFF!!!!!! read more

What a horrible experience! Thay can't get anything right. It began at the terminal with 6 people in front of me it took an hour to get to the counter only to find out that if you have an online reservations you have to take the shuttle to the car park (I wish thay had a sign ir something to let you know) Wich is impossible to find since there was no sign. As I found out I was not the only miss informed one Sinc there where more people confused in the parking lot looking for the shuttle pick up. At last when we found it. we waited about 20 minutes in the rain just to find out that it isca van that can take 8 people or so. So we had to wait for another 45 minutes in the rain for the next one. When we get to sixt car park we had to wait another 55 minutes to find out that thay misspelled my name and there for would not rent me the car. Thay then proposed to cancel my original online reservation ($590) And make me a new one for a smaller car for $1475!?!? I don't think so! Thank you sixt for a waist of my time. So when I first signed up for Sixt Car Rental in Costa Rica I was amazed and in love with the quality of beginning to end service provided by Paul. It made me love Sixt so much my friend & I chose to use it in Ireland as well. So we booked our reservation with Sixt and while at the counter we were offered a GPS/Phone device for 19 Euros a day to give up access to phone calls, internet, & gps. I specifically asked the lady who was helping us with our reservation, "Are you 100% sure this will work all over Ireland, because a lot of my friends said they struggled with signal all over." She insisted yes that it will work we would have no problems with signal. So here two girls go on their way in confidence in hopes that we had everything we needed leaving the airport to travel all over Dublin. It didn't take long but the phone didn't work as promised. Actually, the phone lost signal a lot! We got lost even with the GPS because it lost signal. We also did not have connection to the internet and when we did it was slow. If ever in Ireland again, I won't be renting with Sixt and using their electronic GPS device because I don't appreciate being told something will work and then it costing me a lot of money for not working. read more

I have rented a few times from Sixt as I do travel to Europe often. I never had a problem before. However due to this experience I will never rent from this company ever again. I purchased this rental through PriceLine, as listed as EZ Car Rental. Arrived at the airport, looked for the EZ counter with no luck. Asking around at other counters determined that SixT Rental was the carrier for EZ. The customer service wasn't horrendous, except for the fact that the service rep advised that "by law" they had to charge insurance, although my US policy would have covered me even overseas. The daily insurance was EUR 28 (or about $42), which would've been the daily rental at several other places. The AVIS rep, whom I contacted to find out where EZ was located warned me that SixT rates didn't include insurance and so seemed much cheaper than other, more reputable companies that do factor in insurance into their rates. He was correct. I'd never use this company again... read more

First of all we thought our experience was good, until we realized we were taken advantage of. We were given a car that was not safe (pulled VERY hard to the left and so cheap we could hear nothing but road noise as driving). We made a complaint and request to trade the vehicle on day 2 and NEVER a received a response. The whole vehicle including user manual is in Chinese, so we had no way of knowing how to use some vehicle features. We were told by the SIXT staff that the insurance we purchased through Expedia for $11 a day (full coverage) would not cover the vehicle and we're talked into paying $59/day. That is absolutely 100% untrue and we were cheated out of $295. We paid $1581.04 for 5 days for a horrible vehicle (BASIC Nissan March). I was supposed to also get an economy car (Ford Fiesta or equivalent) and the Nissan March is not, in fact it's the cheapest/smallest death trap. I was told by SIXT staff I could get a refund from Expedia for the insurance I purchased through them, which is 100% false. Your staff should not lie to get up sales and you need to safety check your vehicles. For a little perspective we returned the car to SIXT on day 5 and rented from another company paying $1100 for a Toyota CHR (SUV) for 7 days fully loaded with navigation including English manuals and I was not up charged for insurance since I had already purchased it through Expedia. Terrible experience from being lied to, to the quality of vehicle, to lack of responses to concerns of safety, to the astronomical unfair pricing. read more

I rented a luxury SUV and the next day when we were on the highway it started to rain. I turned on the window wipers and realized the driver side window wiper was completely missing. How this was overlooked I don't know. Called and they said the only options I had were to 1) Drive to a garage buy a wiper and they would reimburse me later or 2) wait 3 or more hours so someone could come pick us up and take us to do the exact same thing, only that would cost 100 euro. It is so unsafe to drive we had to wait. When it finally cleared up we drove to a garage and purchased a replacement. After that our entire day of holiday was ruined because we missed all our activities. When we got back to drop the car off the lady outside said I had to go in to get the reimbursement taken care of. However the line was really long . I finally got to speak to a supervisor and the "only thing he could do" was tell me I had to email customer service? What is is the point of a supervisor that can't do anything. He said we would hear from them within 24 hours and it has been days. We had to wait so long in a line we didn't need to be in we MISSED our INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT! I was so upset. BE CAREFUL RENTING HERE. If they can overlook something as important as a safety item, what else are they overlooking in the vehicles they rent. Extremely disappointed in them as a company. read more

My husband and I currently live in Europe and have rented many cars from multiple services. This is the worst, waste of time, company I've ever dealt with. To put it short and sweet they lie on their websites about prices. Scam you out of refunds and are rude as all hell. If you are planning on renting a car in Ireland please look into Dooley's company. For me, renting from SixT Dublin Airport was about as sensible as handing my credit card over to a gambling addict. Awful. Months after I rented from them, they're doing their best to continue to rob me blind and there's nothing I can do about it because the Terms & Conditions of rental (even with their so called "Top Cover") leave you wide open to claims relating to virtually every part of the car that could be damaged. So do not be surprised to find €100s deducted from your credit card by SixT Dublin Airport months after the rental - it's quite frightening. It's not like the service at the airport is especially good either. Expect to be queuing for ages then left waiting outside in the pouring rain with luggage and 3 small children in tow waiting for the transfer bus that never comes. My advice - get some good separate car rental insurance, document every detail of the car when you take possession of it and most of all, choose another company that at least makes some effort to look after you at the airport. read more

Avoid Sixt at all costs. I was told at the Sixt desk at Dublin airport (July 2018) that the car I had pre-booked and pre-paid (€226) could not be driven away without more payments. This is a first for me. I've experienced aggressive sales tactics at reception desks before, pushing for the usual damage waiver cover - which I've always rejected - but have never been told I cannot drive the car away without paying at least another €144 - a 62% increase - in basic comprehensive insurance. I was perfectly happy to drive the car and risk the full amount - but was told by manager Patrick that he personally wouldn't allow it. No refund on the €226 already paid was offered. I was with my heavily pregnant wife and two year old son. I had no choice at this point but to pay the extra €144. I have since been through the paperwork I received both when I booked the car and after I had entered my details before arriving at the desk. Categorically there is no mention that the car cannot be driven without further payment. This was a disgusting money grab - and illegal. read more

Without a doubt the worst car rental experience I've ever had. Incompetent, dishonest & woeful customer service. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID! We were due to pick our car up at 20.00, but our ferry was cancelled so were put on a later ferry which was also delayed meaning we didn't get into the port until midnight. As soon as we knew about the cancellation at midday we tried to call the office 20+ times & left several messages explaining we were going to be late but still wanted the car & would be there to pick it up once we eventually arrived. We left our details & requested a call back when they could. Once we got up to the airport it was closed so we had to stay at a hotel at the airport rather than go on to our planned destination as we didn't have a car. We went back to Sixt in the morning around 8.30 to pick the car up & finally get on our way after the disastrous & exhausting journey we'd had so far. We were informed our car had in fact been given away & there weren't any others available!! Was done in a very matter of fact way with no apology, remorse or empathy. So despite making the booking a month in advance & paying for it in full we were told you don't have a car, we don't have any others & there's nothing you can do, so we were stranded! I was shaking with anger, still angry about it now. Sixt have a really good reputation on the continent but this outpost at Dublin airport seem to be flying in the face of that. Wish I'd read some of the reviews before booking as would have avoided, just saw it was Sixt & went with their normal reputation! Wish I hadn't bothered! In says in the small print if you are more than 2 hours late your car will be given away. I can accept this, but not when you've tried to contact the office 20+ times, left several messages explaining the situation. They take advantage of whoever they can, stay away My grandparents rented a car and were told they had to pay an exorbitant amount of money extra because they didn't have a credit card only a debit card. They don't get that Extra money back and they still had to pay road assistance. Customer service is a load of shite They have payed with a debit card for several other car companies and nothing like this has ever happened Customer desk agent proceeded to repeatedly lie to them in order to get them to pay the extra fee and after walking ages to find the shuttle to get to the car hire they were tired and not up to dealing with something like this €1000 extra for paying with a debit card is NOT OKAY Never again and will strongly strongly advise everyone I ever meet to never go near you guys read more

BUYER BEWARE! We rented a car from SIXT Car Rental through a third party website carrentals.com and got a nasty surprise when we went to collect the car. SIXT wanted to hold €1100 as an excess damage waiver on our credit card. The third party website, rentalcars.com never mentioned this additional requirement. And once at the counter at SIXT, they would not let us cancel the reservation unless we paid an €110 cancelation fee. SIXT were blaming rentalcars.com for this dilema and rentalcars.com were blaming SIXT. It seems to me that since they are somehow partnered together that they should give all the rental information upfront before you rent and not wait until you arrive at the counter. The week before, we rented from Hertz who only require a €200 hold on your credit card. Lesson learned! Next time, I will stick to the larger more reputable companies and book directly from their website, that way I won't be bounced around like a ping pong ball in the 'Blame Game'. read more

Sitting in the Dublin airport as I compose this. Sixt took our reservations, through orbitz and now has no car for us. Have been up to the counter a few times and have been told different stories by different agents. Overbooking and delays are one thing, but dishonesty shows such a lack of integrity. I am very disappointed with Sixt in Dublin airport. Update 3 hours later: now they required us to buy an 'optional' insurance package or they wouldn't lease out the car. An agent basically admitted this bait and switch tactic is what they do to make their cars appear to be a good value on websites like Orbitz. One more Update: another 2 hour later. After one more hour of waiting in the pick up location (4 in total), Sixt sent us out to enjoy Ireland. Total invoice was 2 times what they had quoted us on Orbitz. The GPS I had rented stopped working after about an hour and would not take any more charge. Calls to Sixt went un-answered and Voice mails were not returned. Only after Orbitz contacted them directly did we find that Sixt Dublin would only exchange the GPS in their airport facility. The car drove fine, but the entire experience with the company was so bad I was very surprised and I would strongly advise against this agency for car rentals. read more

Like other reviewers have already reported, it was a very ugly scene at the counter when I told them I was not interested in their insurance package. Like the others, I had a letter from my insurance company saying I was fully covered for Ireland. When I mentioned that prior to booking I had already discussed insurance with their Customer Service, I was told that the US people don't understand how things work in Ireland. As I was walking away to pick up my car, the Rep was actually yelling at me saying "do you realize you will be driving uninsured in Ireland?" Talk about intimidation. Because I had been warned about the Dublin Rental car desks - all of them - not just Sixt - being the best in Europe at Bait and Switch, I became a member of the Sixt Club so that I could prepay (i.e. not have to negotiate at the counter) and be guaranteed "Express service" upon arrival. There was only one line at the counter. Was told they had a manpower shortage and couldn't provide Express service that day. At least 3 people in front of me were also Express Pre-Pay customers. Took me 45-50 minutes to get to the counter. And then another 20-25 to argue over the insurance with them. ALSO be aware that Sixt Customer Service desk is only open M-F, 8:00-5:00 EDT. Heaven help you if you have a problem that transcends one of their local service desks. Other than all of that: We were happy with the car. Because they didn't have the economy model we had booked, we were upgraded without extra charge. And once we got thru the booking line, the drive-away process was quite efficient. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. They scammed me out $500 for nonexistent damage. They refused to let me decline CDW without a hardcopy of the insurance coverage signed by someone at the credit card company, when in fact it is an automatic benefit of the card. They charged me for window chips when in fact the chips were so small, they could have been there on initial inspection. Seriously, look at the ball on the tip of your ballpoint pen. As previous reviewers have pointed out they made every effort to bump up the price with add ons that were not in the original rental cost, they made it very difficult to use my valid CDW credit card insurance pushing me towards their expensive cdw policy. I suffered a flat tire on the trip two days in, called the sixt office and they told me that there was nothing that they could do. They left us on the side of the road without a vehicle for 16 hours! Customer service was very very poor. They finally towed us a replacement vehicle for a $1000 fee!!!! This was the worst rental experience I have had and will not be renting from sixt again, to top it off they are now charging me tolls on roads that I did not even drive on.... read more
