I waited a few weeks after my return to write this review as I had, an honestly still have, a pending inquiry about a random charge I received a week after my return. Even with that, I reluctantly gave the second star as my experience from pick up to drop off was without issue! This location is situated away from the airport and requires a shuttle to and from. Shuttle is easy to pick up at both areas and is constantly running. The line inside fills up quickly as every bus load has around 20 folks, all who are after a car, majority automatic cars. If that is the case, be prepared to wait on those busy weekend days, even if you reserved. We reserved an automatic and initially was told they were waiting, however got lucky as someone returned one as we were getting to the counter. Our reservation saved us, so I highly recommend reserving a car. Service at the counter was fine. They were not friendly, nor un-friendly. It was as efficient as it could be and ended with keys in hand. The car was solid. A Skoda model that got great gas mileage and had plenty of interior space. It was nice, even though odd, to be directed to return with the gas tank empty. Due to our limited amount of driving, I returned with half a tank, and weirdly suspect that has something to do with the additional charges. As for the return, all seemed fine. Pulled in, parked, got it looked at, printed receipt in hand and then hopped on the awaiting shuttle. None the wiser to the pending $250 that was coming my way without explanation mere days later. I have since reached out to Hertz twice, but have gotten no response at all. I am now disputing with my AMEX as an unauthorized charge seeing that I have gotten no response or detail as to the reason for the charge. These are always the same horror stories. Completely ruins the overall experience, which for the most part, was wildly successful and positive. Overall, I won't recommend to not rent from Hertz at all, but be mindful and cautious. read more

Adding to the DON'T RENT FROM HERTZ DUBLIN reviews! First an overview: I booked through Chase Travel and got an extraordinary price, just 5 Euros/day! I was provided a voucher to present at check-in. Shuttle from airport to offsite rental was fine. Upon checking in I denied insurance, they said they had to have the email proving I had insurance. To be fair, this was stated on the voucher and I missed it. It took about 20 minutes dealing with Chase and getting said email sent. Once I had that the renting was easy. Agent said to return the car empty as their price was better than what I would pay in Dublin (never have I ever heard this). Return was quick and easy. Now for the issues: Hotel valet in Galway lost my car key. We called the Hertz location I rented from (George Evans +353539152532) and they say they have to request the spare key from the Fiat dealer they bought the car from, have it delivered to the hotel in Galway, and that it would take 2-3 days and I would have to pay for a new, authentic Fiat key to be made at a cost €633 plus €100 admi. Mr. Evans says, "The hotel is paying for it, don't worry about the cost". I am only in Ireland a week, I am not staying in one city for three days to wait for a key. The Hotel offers to book me another rental car so I can go about my trip. Nice offer, but I am still 100% responsible for the original rental car. I would prefer not to leave it there and hope it all gets settled while I am travelling. And God forbid it gets stolen or damaged. Instead, the hotel and I decide to call a locksmith and see if they can make a key, at the hotel's expense. It worked! Sweet! But in creating a new key, it voided the codes on all existing keys (including the backup key the dealer had). Hertz says we now have to pay to have TWO keys made and they have to be authentic Fiat keys made only by the dealership they bought the car from. €1,266 is the price they quote. RIDICULOUS. I figure I will deal with it later and get on my way to enjoy my trip. The next day the hotel calls and someone turned in the key. So they are excited, we now have the original key and don't need to get a new key made. Wrong, Hertz insists since the locksmith voided the code on the original keys, two keys still need to be made rather than recoded. Hotel and I both call multiple Fiat dealerships and locksmiths. ALL of them confirm the original keys can, in fact, be recoded, and new keys do NOT have to be made. I make multiple requests of the HERTZ Dublin franchise to give me the contact information of their dealer that they insist the keys have to be made by. Nothing. They saw the opportunity to make money and new I had no power. Multiple emails to them asking for the contact info or confirmation from the dealer that keys had to be made went unanswered. And when I returned the car (a day early...no credit) the charge for two keys is on the receipt and I have no way to dispute it or talk to anyone. I am frustrated and this is consuming way to much of my mind and time on vacation. Yes, it is the hotel valet's fault, and the hotel was amazing to work with and promised to cover the cost. What a scam! I secured a week long rental for a couple hundred dollars. For all my decades on Earth I have used my Amex for rentals to protection without needing to purchase insurance. On arrival to Hertz I was told we were REQUIRED to purchase insurance in Ireland unless I had a letter confirming liability coverage. This was written NOWHERE for me to be prepared. FURTHER...I had selected a car advertised as having a 4 suitcase capacity. At the counter I was told my 3 bags would not fit!!! The representative said he needed to give us a slightly larger car but would not charge us much more....my bill for the rental went up to $1700!!??? With two children with me after a red eye and a line behind me, with a shuttle's distance to the airport and all our travel plans dependent on car rental - I felt my hands were tied. It was WAY more than we could afford. So angry. And Hertz's response is that it is out if their hands because it is indepentaly operated?! Subject: Extremely Disappointing and Unprofessional Rental Experience This was by far the worst rental car experience we've ever had--bordering on extortion. I reserved a car (see attached reservation) for my daughter and her friend. Upon arrival, the rental agent refused to accept the credit card stored on my daughter's phone--despite the fact that she has used it without issue all over the world for the past five years. The agent also rejected her other physical credit card (which includes collision damage insurance) simply because the name didn't fully match the one on her California driver's license. Instead of being helpful, the agent pressured them relentlessly to purchase additional insurance using scare tactics and intimidation. Fortunately, my daughter's friend also had a credit card with collision damage coverage. Once they insisted on using it, the agent could no longer justify refusing it--so instead, she issued an entirely new rental in the friend's name, but changed all of the original reservation terms. She imposed a much higher daily rate, added a "late service fee" (which had not been part of the original reservation and typically doesn't apply to loyalty members), and charged a staggering €5,000 deposit--clearly to intimidate them into buying insurance. I've traveled extensively and never encountered a deposit this high. I've even read reviews of others being charged €2,000 deposits--perhaps Americans are being unfairly targeted? To make matters worse, the car's phone charger didn't work. This forced them to stop mid-journey to charge their phones--wasting precious time and risking getting lost without GPS. The entire experience was hostile, unprofessional, and felt exploitative. We later found out this location is a franchise owned by the Boland family (Eamonn, Maire, and Sean). Hertz USA, or even international customer service, cannot assist in resolving any issues with this location--it's essentially a private business operating under the Hertz brand with none of the accountability. Contacting them is nearly impossible; no email is provided, and they only list a phone number. Even Hertz USA won't give out direct contact information. We will absolutely avoid renting in Ireland in the future--and certainly will never rent from Hertz again. read more

If I could give a negative stars, I would. STAY AWAY, this company is dishonest. Absolutely dishonest and horrendous experience. They rented me a vehicle in bad shape, only drove it for a little while before it had a major mechanical failure (clutch failure). They charged me ~$2800 for a bad clutch, and said I was the one that caused the issue. I submitted a rebuttal, but they said if the car was in bad shape, I should have said something even though the failure was the first significant sign of the issue with the car. They also triple charged me for the rental period, but eventually corrected the overcharge after I filled a complaint. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. I recommend reporting them to the Irish Consumer Protection Authorities (CCPC and ECC Ireland), also, submit a complain to Hertz International, as this company is a Licensee of Hertz. Just because it had a chip in the windscreen which was smaller than a cotton bud and Autoglass themselves said they wouldn't even bother repairing it as wasn't required. Absolutely disgusting! Hertz rent a car in Dublin is a scam. Had a printed reservation with returning the car to Cork but picking up in Dublin. I am also a Gold Rewards Member. The rate at the counter was over $250 higher than the rate on my reservation. They also do not honor the Amex insurance that comes with my card. Have never had problems with this insurance before. We had a very lovely experience... I was petrified reading the other reviews on here and elsewhere. We reserved through Delta, breezed through the line due to being President's Circle- and we were on the road quite quickly. We did document every scratch, dent, imperfection with photos and video prior to leaving the premises. We vacuumed the car before returning and we were not penalized for anything additionally. Unfortunately, we had left a backpack in the trunk of the rental and didn't realize until we were entering security at the airport. I am a 20 year Hertz Gold Club Plus member who has travelled internationally and rented cars during that time. This is the worst location I've ever dealt with. To start, I rented an automatic car, but somehow got a manual one. That wouldn't usually be a problem as I drive a manual SUV at home, but the shifter was on the left hand side instead of the right and I was scared I'd get into an accident learning how to shift. So back to the rental desk to get an automatic shift car, and find out that I have to pay an additional $120, which made a $350 car almost $500. Then I asked about a toll pass, and the location says, the rental agreement covers the toll pass. No, it doesn't. I received a bill today because I took the M50. This rental site has bait and switch down to a science. Thankfully I did research on Hertz International before I rented the vehicle and paid for the complete cover insurance option, otherwise they would have tried to charge us for that as well. We rent cars everywhere from Italy to San Diego and have been very satisfied. We will NEVER ever again rent from this Hertz franchise. I don't trust them at all. read more

This email is to complain of Hertz poor service and Liabilities to endangering my family after renting me a car that was in poor condition and unsafe. It is unconscionable to believe Hertz would rent such a car. I paid Love Ireland 1,100 Euro to rent an Audi A6 (or similar). At Dublin Airport, I was talked into upgrading to a 'Hybrid' Volvo AC60, paying an additional 800 more Euro. I was given a car where the batteries on the hybrid side were dead. When I tried to charge at the castles/hotels that we stayed at, I was told the chargers were for 'residents or employees' only. So, I was dependent on the motor part of the car, not being able to utilize the electric side of the car. Even worse, beginning June 1st, we had a flat tire. Before you say, "That's not our fault...", We had to fill the tire several times. We even stopped by Hertz at Shannon Airport. They told us, "It's not our problem and you have to go fix it yourself." Are you serious?!! I had to leave the Hertz rental facility with an unsafe car?! I went to MacIntyre Tire in Shannon to get fixed. There was a screw in the tire and they plugged the hole. Because of Hertz in Shannon, I lost half of a day in our travels. Not even 2 days later, the same tire was going flat again, leaving us stranded in Clifden. I called Hertz who sent me to A1 Tire in Clifden. Kiernan was great. He showed me multiple plugs in the tire. He showed me how one plug was leaking and stated the tire should have been replaced and never put back onto the car by Hertz. There were too many holes, making the tire unsafe! Again, we lost another half of a day, getting Hertz car fixed. I spent a lot of money with Hertz. I was traveling with my wife and disabled son. I depended on Hertz to make my trip safe and enjoyable. Instead, Hertz became the distraction and the worry. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. TARGETS SOLO FEMALE TRAVELERS. Same thing as other reviews regarding paying in full, only to find mandatory insurance charges upon arrival that are required to drive the car off the lot. This practice would likely be deemed illegal in the US. They tried to bully her into getting extra insurance because of the "high winds" on Irish roads. (The car can't handle wind??) Upon return, scammed my girlfriend by claiming she was responsible for a small scratch on a hubcap already covered in scratches and owed the equivalent of 400 USD. Was so small the walk-around pictures did not even have the resolution to capture it. Employee claimed it "looked new" because the other scratches looked duller. Also stated she should not have declined the additional insurance a week earlier, tough luck. Girlfriend requested records of previous damage. The records indicated another "single scratch" charge for the same hubcap. Another pattern of small scratches on the same hubcap likely incurred another charge for a third renter. In total, that hubcap alone probably made these scammers ~1,200 USD. Or would have if my girlfriend didn't successfully dispute it; the credit card company also called BS. They eventually told her to get lost and take it up with Hertz corporate. She had done her due diligence already and (successfully) disputed the charge directly with her credit card instead. read more

HERTZ DUBLIN AIRPORT STAFF ARE COMMISSION CONMEN AND HUSTLERS. AVOID! AVOID! I've been hiring cars from Dublin airport for the last 30 years. The early noughties were the wild west years where every company would try to con you for insurance or damages. In recent years it seemed this was over however the Hertz/ Thrifty branch have a strong taste for nostalgia. The front desk staff here are hustlers and conmen, plain and simple. They are on commission for the insurance Hertz/ Thrifty sells on cars and will do everything to not accept your credit card so they can get their commission. Below I outline how they tried to con me and what you can do if you find yourself in a similar situation. Special mention goes to "Stefan", in case that's not his real name he's the short, squat little man with the very loud dublin accent and a demeanour that threatens to break into outright aggression. If he's there you'll definitely hear him before you see him. Also look out for "Lelisha" who seems to be in on the con as well. If you look through the other reviews you will see numerous other customers have had the same problem at this branch, all of a sudden credit cards which were used to insure the car (and are likely used all of the time) somehow don't work at the office. Well lo and behold the same thing happened to me. But that's OK! Because instead you can purchase Hertz's extortionate car insurance that is upwards of £30 a day there and then (despite insurance already being covered on your credit card that they are pretending doesn't function). This can easily lead to your total car hire fee doubling if not tripling! So how does this work? We had already paid for our car hire and went to the hub to collect the keys. When it came to putting our credit card into the credit card reader to confirm the insurance it kept getting declined, even after having our credit card provider stay on the line and confirming that there were no problems at all with the card. Our provider said that the Hertz office were trying to put it through on chip and signature and they should be able to do so on chip and pin or just signature, "Stefan" claimed this was impossible. He insisted it could only be put through on chip and signature which was being declined. In reality he was doing this on purpose to push you towards paying for Hertz's own insurance. After spending two hours trying to outline how the card was working and the provider being on the phone to verify this, we finally relented and said we would take the insurance so we could start our holiday. However...... when it came to be time to pay for Hertz's insurance we also had to use our credit card as it was the only card we had. CAN YOU BELEIVE IT, our credit card all of a sudden wasn't declined by their card reader and they asked us to put a pin in. Upon pointing this out they panicked and got their manager and in the space of a minute, probably in order to save face, the manager was able to put the credit card through on signature. If this happens to you: 1.) Refuse to deal with "Stefan", he knows all the tricks so demand to be served by someone else and ask for the manager. 2.) Call your credit card company to confirm that your card is working just fine 3.) If you relent and take their insurance, Either use the same or another credit card on the chip and pin and when it comes time to enter your pin, point this out to them that your credit card is suddenly working. 4.) If you do have to accept their insurance, you should be able to make a claim for it with your credit card company as the fault is clearly with their card readers. Check with your provider for what evidence is needed. read more

I booked with Hertz by the Dublin Airport in mid April of 2022. I booked specifically with Hertz because the other rental companies in the area had really terrible reviews and I went with a recognizable brand that I had booked with before at another location and had a good experience. The day before picking up the car, I read the reviews on here and was terrified that I was going to have a bad experience. I think, for the most part, these negative reviews are from folks who didn't really understand how car rentals work in general. I also assume that most people who have a good experience do NOT write reviews. I rented a compact four door with a manual transmission. I booked a few weeks in advance. It cost about €1200 all in for 8 days (including insurance). This is expensive for a car like this, but due to an international shortage and it being the Easter holiday week, I was happy with the price. If we had booked earlier, it would've been cheaper. If we had booked later it wouldn't been almost four times the price. So, book in advance if you can. I paid with my AmEx card. They didn't hold a deposit. I assume that they didn't hold a deposit because I paid with a Credit Card and I also paid for their insurance. Based on the reviews on here, I took a number of precautions. I thoroughly inspected the car on pickup and pointed out any additional issues with the car. The guy at the counter didn't have me sign anything initially, but the woman in the lot had me sign the document. I shouldn't have needed to ASK for this but I did and it was fine. I went straight to the pickup place rather than the hertz counter in the airport because I was coming from Dublin City. The checkout process was super easy and quick (as was the return). I paid extra for the insurance. This wasn't an upsell. It was necessary because I didn't have my own insurance that would apply to the rental car (I have my own car insurance, but I live in the United States). This was a fixed amount per day (I think €30 or something). I paid at the counter. It wasn't more than what I was quoted at the time of booking. The guy at the counter explained this all to me and it was all above board. I learned that they only cover the tolls on a specific road where there aren't any actual toll booths (M1). They said they would bill me after the fact for those tolls. I went through twice at €3.20 each. Hertz billed me exactly €6.20. For the other tolls, I made sure I paid them when I went through. There's usually an attendant, or a way to pay with a card or cash and a machine. I never had a problem where I was unable to pay the toll at the time of going through. Point being: pay the tolls as you go through them. When returning the car, I made sure to fill up the gas, which is a normal requirement for car rentals. I also made sure to Vacuum the inside of the car and get rid of any trash. This is also pretty normal. After 8 days all over rainy Ireland, this was necessary. I didn't get charged any cleaning fees. There are plenty of places just SOUTH of this Hertz location on SWORDS ROAD (R132) where you can get gas, vacuum the car, or even put it through the car wash if necessary. I wanted to book the car for an extra two days, but the rate had really sky-rocketed to nearly €500 per day! Needless to say, I called and asked this before hand so do NOT assume that the rate at the time of booking will be consistent with extra days. If you need extra days, try to book them in advance so you don't get hit with extra fees. I returned the car on time for this reason. FYI they give you a 30 minute grace period. Also, another bit of advice. If you can drive stick and you're used to driving on the right hand side of the road, it is VERY easy to adapt to driving stick on the left hand side. The pedals are not reversed (still clutch, brake, gas left-ro-right). And the configuration of the gears is the same as well (1st is top left, reverse is bottom right). You're just using your left hand to shift instead of your right. It was harder to adapt to driving on the left in general than it was to using my left hand to switch gears. Maybe I'm lucky but this was all fine and the rental went as it should. If I get hit with any additional surprise charges here I will update this review. read more

Do not rent from this company. I'm extremely displeased with a recent two week rental of a luxury 4/5 door vehicle from Hertz Ireland. I reserved an automatic luxury vehicle that stated an Audi A6 or similar for 1039 Euro. When I arrived at the airport, there were no Audi A6's in the fleet. Instead, the representative pawned off a 2017 Audi A7 with significant damage on the left-hand side of the vehicle (see attached photos). I didn't notice the damage until I arrived at my residence in Galway as the driving seat is on the right side in Ireland. The representative didn't mention anything about damage when assigning the vehicle, which leads me to believe I was an easy target as I had just come off an international flight and was noticably exhausted. Midway through my trip, I woke up to find the car wouldn't start due to an electrical issue. After waiting 2 hours for a representative from the roadside to address the problem, they told me it was a battery issue. The car had completely shut down, and there was no electrical feature left on inside the vehicle. Upon inspecting the battery, the technician determined that due to the aggressive marking on the car battery terminals, the car had battery issues multiple times before. Since it was a 2017 vehicle with battery issues, he believed it had sat in a lot for an extended period and was only taken out during the holiday period to make up for Hertz overbooking vehicles. I was charged an unjustified bill for the call out, which came to 150 EUR even though it was a vehicle issue and not a user error. Upon reporting this to the head claims office in Wexford, the representative dismissed the facts and said that it was user error, completely ignoring the facts stated by myself and the roadside technician. I also missed an important business meeting due to this mishap. If that sounds bad, listen to this, the vehicle given to me was determined an upgrade from an Audi a6, which I reserved. That upgrade cost an extra 500 EUR on top of the base price. So the amount for the two weeks came to 2133 Euro, which included two hours wasted, a faulty battery, 150 euro, and a condescending claims representative in Wexford for a battered 2017 Audi A7. I spend thousands of dollars annually renting from different Hertz locations. worldwide. I am a gold member and have rented in 12 different countries. I have never in my life experienced such awful customer service as I did in Ireland. Because they couldn't provide me with the vehicle that I reserved, Hertz should have upgraded me to the next best car for free. Usually, when you book a car, you receive a model of that year or the one of the previous year, NOT a car that is two years old with significant visible damage and a damaged battery for a surcharge of 500 euro. Please remember that Hertz in Ireland is an International Franchise and thus they do not hold the high standards that you assume when you book with Hertz in other countries. The Dublin Airport Hertz Rent A Car was awful. I highly recommend that the buyer beware. We booked and paid for our car weeks in advance and once we arrived were surprised by an added fee in the contract. The contract did not state the actually amount of the fee and exceeded what was printed at their desk. This extra fee tacked on another 500 euros. That is around $600 dollars and this made it the most expensive rental car that we have ever rented. The associate at the desk said that if it was not paid we would not have the car. We needed the car so we took it with the understanding that we would be disputing it with American Express. When we returned the car the check in associate acknowledged that the fee did not seem quite right but stated that once you take the car you are stuck with the added expense. Luckily Hertz has a partnership with American Express so I am sure that everything will eventually be resolved. read more

We had a little bit of a wait in line. So if possible I definitely would recommend getting to the Rental Car station as quickly as possible but if you have to go through customs sometimes it is what it is. Staff was very friendly and helpful once we got to the counter things went very smooth but we also had pre-registered for the car. read more

I had a wonderful experience with Hertz at the Dublin airport. Now ours was a little on the expensive side, however nothing was an up sell. Being that we were driving on the left side of the road we went with a manual ( which cost more) and got the full coverage insurance since we were driving throughout the country. With some of the narrow roads we went through, I am so happy we did. Luckily we did not have any accidents but knowing if something happened we were covered, was all I needed for my peace of mind and anxiety. Additionally the check out process and return process was very simple. I am an anxious traveler and everyone was kind and helpful, not to mention the signage at the airport was very helpful. It is also cheaper to have them fill up the tank upon returning which made life that much easier. read more

I joined presidents club earlier this year and had booked a Renault Grand Scenic for a recent trip on the 01/09/23. When I got there, I asked for an upgrade as one of the entitlements of presidents circle. The answer I got from the rep at the counter was a blank no without any explanation. He then told me that all he had was a Dacia Jogger manual for the price I had booked or a Hyundai Santa Fe which would have cost an extra €100 a day. I chose the Dacia as I have had it with car rental companies taking advantage. For 6 days I paid nearly €1700 for the worst heap of shit I have ever driven. You had to plug your phone in on the dash usb only for maps to work from your phone only to have to keep plugging it in and out because it stopped working every 5 mins!. The only thing it had going for it was that it had space for bags. I have now decided that Hertz isn't for me and never again will I go back there. Presidents circle me arse!. read more

I have two issues with my rental experience that were negative. First, the hotspot we rented does not work in Northern Ireland. Something we were never told. As we were only using our phones via wifi, it left us in the dark ages for a few days. Yes I know its a different country, but why cant the satellite work there as well? The major issue was when we returned the vehicle we were told that there was a slight scuff on the passenger side mirror and quarter panel. We were told wed be charged 388 Euro for them to buff it out. First of all, I have no idea where this damage happened or if it was my fault. I almost strictly use Hertz and am a Gold Member, while I had a great experience with the Kerry Airport team, I cannot day the same for Dublin. Pick up of the car felt very much like a "transaction", I don't expect a red carpet to be rolled out but maybe some kind of a smile and genuine interaction would be nice! The first car we were given did not start. Don't know if the previous renter used the wrong gas or what happened but we had to go all the way back up stairs and get a different car, you'd think that would be something checked before the car is listed as rentable? Not the end of the world, inconvenient since we were on a strict schedule but whatever.... Lastly, I had some discrepancies on my billing I wanted a explanation for/cleared up and as I am in the US and cannot easily call Dublin, I emailed their customer service through their website. The initial reply was just a copy of my recipes, something I obviously already had, and no explanation. I replied asking for more help, and no one answered me at all. Sent another email.... no reply...... So I called Hertz in the US... shocker, they can't do anything for me because this location is essentially privately owned, they can't even call them! Finally it took me tweeting Hertz Ireland for someone to help me! They contacted the necessary people and finally someone emailed me, but their emails were unhelpful and lacked any sort of customer care. Ridiculous. This unfortunately had really left me with a sour taste in my mouth and the next time I rent a car overseas, I will likely reconsider using Hertz. read more

BELIEVE THE BAD REVIEWS AND DON'T RENT HERE! You are required to buy their collision damage waiver. If you're renting from the USA, no credit card company will give you collision damage coverage for Ireland. There's good reason for that: credit card companies know these rental companies are SCAM artists and don't want to deal with constant claims. There's a minimum $2000 euro deductible for the required coverage and you can be absolutely certain they will find or manufacture something to take that deductible. Our car had a 6" scuff mark to the undercarriage front left bumper. (Had we seen it before returning the car, we could have easily gotten it fixed at a local shop) In the US that would have cost about $75-100 to fix. But they charged us $1000. They justified it with a work order that my autobody shop laughed at and told us was a complete scam. We have no recourse, and you won't either (other than leaving a bad review). SCAM ARTISTS! Upon arriving to pick up our vehicle we were asked if we wanted to upgrade to which we replied no. Then we were asked if we wanted manual or automatic. We thought since the steering wheel is reversed as well as the clutch, plus driving on the opposite side of the road, having an automatic would make it just a bit easier. When we returned the vehicle after our rental period we were told that accepting an automatic was considered "an upgrade." Our initial rental was for $100. They had the audacity to charge us $749.00. Yes you read that right. From $100 to $749.00 for something they never told us was considered an upgrade. PLUS! PLUS! PLUS! PLUS! PLUS! PLUS! PLUS! We acquired a small nail in one of our tires along the way, and because of HERTZ "EXTREMELY" high standard, they told us they would NOT repair the tire but instead they needed to purchase an entire new tire. And for some odd reason the insurance that we paid extra for did not cover the tire because apparently in Hertz's alternate universe the tire of the vehicle was a completely. separate. entity. from the vehicle itself. Along with the vehicles glass. $281.00 was the price we were told would be charged to our credit card. I drive an Audi A4 in the States, the tires are wide and expensive. If you like to wait in long lines to pick up your rental car this is the rental car agency for you. I was looking at booking a rental car through Expedia.com for pick up at the Dublin Airport & the most economical automatic was through Hertz, which was actually pretty surprising. I paid for the rental car online through Expedia & didn't give it a second thought until I had to pick the car up a few weeks later in Dublin. Hertz was at an off site location for their rental car pick up so you're bussed from the airport to Hertz. But once you are here that is when the long tedious wait begins. Just to get to a customer service person took 90 minutes. At that point I had wished I booked with the other rental car agency as there was maybe a 10 minute wait at best. I'm not sure if the reason for the extremely long delays was due to the other agents trying to upsell to other vehicles and/or amenitites to people or if they couldn't find their reservations, etc. But whatever they were doing it caused quite a long back up. Now the agent I ended up talking to was very nice, did not try to upsell, found my reservation, double checked that it was paid,etc. The only thing I ended up getting extra was the GPS. After processing all the paperwork my agent took us outside to do a walk around of the vehicle & marked a few dents & dings, double check everything & then we were on our way. Something you need to be aware of is there are several toll roads & they do not have actual toll booths, for instance the M50 Motorway as yo make your way out of Dublin. I found out when I got to my destination in Portmagee. You need to pay via the internet within a certain amount of time otherwise you will incur fees which the rental car agency will take out of your credit card that is on file & they can get exorbitant. Another thing that you will run into has to do with car insurance & a security deposit. As I stated I booked my car rental on Expedia & I actually purchased the car insurance offered to me online. When going over everything the agent offered me their car insurance to which I replied I had already purchased it online through Expedia where I booked the car. The agent told me that the insurance I purchased is basically useless there & if I did not get their insurance now then I would have to pay a large security deposit to cover any damage to the car. There was no mention of this on Expedia's website. Had I known about this I probably wouldn't have had such a look of horror on my face when they agent mentioned this astronomical amount that would be placed on my card. I opted for the security deposit as I had already purchased the insurance through Expedia (why pay for insurance twice, right?) & I immediately emailed Expedia shortly after getting the rental car & was reassured that if anything were to happen to the car their insurance would take care of it. So be aware that this will happen if you don't purchase Hertz's insurance while you are standing at the agents desk so you need to either purchase the insurance or make sure you have plenty of room on your credit card as it will also take about 3 or 4 days for the hold charge to come off once you have returned the vehicle. If I were going back to Ireland would I rent another car through Hertz? Mmmm, probably not, unless they were the only rental car agency there...maybe. read more

It was super confusing to try and find this rental car drop-off point. We had picked up our car in Shannon and wish they had warned us that the Hertz in Dublin was not connected to the airport. Fortunately, we arrived early enough to not need to stress about getting to our plane on time. Once we found the drop-off, my mom stopped the car and they told her to park it somewhere else. She struggled to turn the car back on (a common occurrence during our trip) and the guy just stared at her. Like, thanks so much for the help, dude-who-is-getting-paid?? Eye roll. Eventually she parked and we were annoyed so instead of throwing my back out again, we requested assistance getting our bags out of the trunk. Someone reluctantly helped us (thank you) and loaded them onto a shuttle bus. Once the bus was full, we were driven to the airport gate and they removed the bags again. I found it extremely stressful to rent a car through Hertz in Ireland and I honestly wouldn't recommend their services even if you did have experience driving on the left. They charged me 250 euros to clean the car upon return. I'm not exaggerating, there were a few pieces of garbage (like maps and an empty plastic bottle) and it needed to be vacuumed after spending a week traveling around Ireland and eating in the car a few times. That's it. 250 euros. INSANE. They also charged me 936 euros for a new bumper after I scratched the corner of it, which I do admit to doing so I knew I'd get charged, but 936 euros?? This was my recent experience with Hertz at the Dublin, Ireland Airport. It will be my last. Initially, I thought I booked a good rate through AAA with a reputable company, Hertz. 40 Euros for a week plus some taxes. Hertz sent me a written confirmation, "What You Pay at the Counter, 66.33 EUR." One thing that was on the confirmation that I'll definitely pay more attention to next time was, Location Type. This Hertz is an "Independent Licensee." Seems like that means they paid to use the Hertz name, but Hertz as a company has no control or influence. If you call them for assistance, they won't intervene. The other thing about the confirmation was that it listed all insurance as "optional," but when I arrived at the counter, I was told that even though I declined collision coverage, I could not decline "supplementary liability." This coverage was 49 Euros, for the week, more than double my original quoted rate. I found it rather convenient that my original quote said all insurance was optional, but when I arrived, I was subjected to a hard sell on multiple types of insurance. This Hertz licensee expects documentation before they will even consider waiving any of the extra coverage they want you to buy. I actually brought a letter from my credit card company, and without that, they would have insisted that I purchase the collision coverage too. By this point, I suspected that I was the victim of a bait and switch, a promise of a low rental rate that suddenly more than doubled because of supposed mandatory insurance charges. Since there was no forewarning, you don't really have an opportunity to try and bring full documentation with you. And, you've just gotten off a transatlantic flight and just want to get out of the airport. I expect they know most people won't cancel the reservation and walk away. I found it deceptive, coverage quoted IN WRITING as OPTIONAL became mandatory. The car itself was nice, and when they gave me the keys, they also showed me several pictures with little red circles in various places, purportedly showing existing "damage." In hindsight, I should have realized this was the groundwork of their next scheme to extract more money out of this rental. Apparently their belief is that all cars should remain in pristine showroom condition forever. There is no allowance for normal wear and tear at this place. That would probably negatively impact what I perceive to be their business model, that every encounter with the customer is an opportunity to pile on additional charges. Thus, it was really no surprise when I was charged an additional 165 Euros for what they even referred to as a superficial scratch or scuff on one of the wheels. I was told this estimate was the maximum, and it might turn out to be less. Of course it wasn't less after all. In the end, what was supposed to be a 66 Euro rental was almost five times higher, 350 Euros. Too bad I didn't buy the collision insurance you might be thinking. That would have cost me almost exactly as much as the charges for this new "damage." Wasn't that a remarkable coincidence? Ireland and its people are generally lovely, but this place, my first and last stop on the Emerald Isle, left a bad feeling. You might want to look elsewhere, because I suspect that unless you encase the car in bubble wrap, they are going to find some scratch and charge you for it. read more

Terrible, simply terrible. I guess I should have read these reviews before because I too can honestly say it's the worst car rental experience I've ever had. I made the mistake of trusting the brand name. Upon arrival, exhausted and out of our element in a new country, they tell us we will owe almost $1,000 US dollars when I had been told we would owe around $300. I don't know what scam they're trying to pull or who would pay these insane "insurance" rates, but it's criminal. GO RENT FROM EUROPCAR! We had a much better experience from start to finish using them. I have already launched a complaint with Expedia and am asking that they not work with this location. I recommend everyone complain to their booking company if they used one. read more
