En Lai has always been our go-to Chinese restaurant in this area. We stopped by last night to order dinner after a failed attempt to call the store, as their phone lines were down. There were about five people waiting in the lobby before us, but the wait was relatively quick--probably 15 minutes tops. I ordered orange chicken with vegetable fried rice. This is my go-to at Chinese restaurants and this meal hit the mark. The orange chicken was crispy and had a great flavor. It tasted like a natural orange flavor, as opposed to an overly artificial one. The fried rice was my only gripe. The only vegetables in the vegetable fried rice were broccoli and carrots, cut in really large pieces. I would've preferred smaller pieces and a wider variety of vegetables. I went here today and I got crab Rangoon as well as fried dumplings. The BEST food I've had in so long! The worker/owner (not sure) was the sweetest and very helpful with my questions. It came with regular looking fried rice but what I'm assuming was supposed to be chicken was some pieces of white spongy pieces of God only knows what?? This used to be our favorite place for Chinese for many years. As new places began to pop up around Shorewood, we ventured out to try new places and have yet to find a true favorite. Tonight, we decided to return to EnLai and it was very disappointing. First, the portion was half of what it used to be. Second, I ordered the chicken and Chinese vegetables and it was not even edible. The only way I can describe the chicken is stringy rubber bands. I have never seen or tasted anything like it. The vegetables were very few. I wound up throwing it all away. I'm not sure if this place changed ownership or what the explanation is for the awful food, but if they continue to serve up what they did tonight, they won't be around much longer. read more

We only ordered 1 item, to go, to eat on the road - pepper steak. Delicious... but a bit greasy... should use less oil. Also, owner needs to staff more. Only 1 man was on duty. First time trying this restaurant yesterday and it will be the last time, I will not be ordering from here ever again. Made a online order for delivery at 5:45pm and didn't receive my food until 8:45pm. I'm a pretty laid back and patient guy but over 2 hrs was unacceptable. Online it said it would take up to an hour for it to be delivered and I'm ok with that. That hour passed so I gave them another hour and then I called to get a ETA. They said, the manager who deals with online order is busy on another call can we call you back at this number. I said sure. 15 mins and no call back. I called them back, didn't even get to say hello and they knew it was me right away they told me it was on the way. Then received my food at 8:45pm and they close at 9:00pm. I used to come here quite often, years ago. It was one of my favorite Chinese restaurants and definitely the most consistent in terms of food quality. Although it's still pretty good, there is definitely a decrease in that regard and I wouldn't go out of my way again just to come here. They've made some changes since the last time I visited. They've added a Thai ice cream area. I can't speak for the quality of that as I haven't tried it here yet but it might be a good change especially since Thai ice cream isn't widely available yet in the area. We came here with my wife and mom and ordered a few dishes. We had the pan fried noodles with chicken, moo shoo chicken and pineapple chicken. All of the entrees tasted fresh and delicious. I do have 2 major complaints about the whole experience though. The service is pretty lacking in terms of forgetting to bring utensils or extra plates for everyone, etc. we also ordered some food to go and although I assume it was fresh and prepared after we ordered it, it smelled pretty disgusting after sitting in the car for not even 5 minutes. Overall this is still a decent spot, but nothing to rave about. I think some of the reviews of this place are a little bit harsh but overall the rating is about where I would put it. Not bad but not amazing. If you're in the area and craving Chinese cuisine, give this place a try, but if you already have plans somewhere else don't go out of your way for Enlai 59. Also as with any Chinese food, who knows how it'll sit with you. read more

Absolutely disgusting. I ordered takeout and the inside of the restaurant is deplorable. There was a circular child gate set up in the dining room that looked like it was a play area for a small child. There was also a pack and play set up in the dining room that was loaded with dirty diapers. It was very off-putting. The food was pretty gross too. They have the worst orange chicken I've ever had. I didn't care for it at all, it tasted off. I requested a 'medium' spicy level for it as well and it had zero spiciness. I'd like to give En Lai 3.5 Stars - it's somewhere between A-OK and I'm a fan. Decent enough Chinese food and very reasonable prices. They have an extensive menu, so anyone will be able to find something they like. Crab Rangoon was A-OK, Teriyaki Chicken on a Stick was A-OK. The General Tso's Chicken (breaded, drenched in sauce) was pretty good......not that spicy. The portion size is very generous. Sweet and Sour Shrimp - skip it. Small shrimp with way too much breading, and sauce. Egg Rolls - OK. Shrimp in Lobster Sauce - well, I thought that's what I ordered. Not sure if the girl asked 'garlic sauce', but what I got seemed to be about 10 nice shrimp floating in the bottom of a container of egg drop soup. Very strange. This is one of the best chinese take-out places I have been to. Their prices are decent and their portion size is good. Their entrees taste different from each other and we felt that it tasted more unique rather than having four different entrees taste the same with the same sauce. There are coupons at the clipper or save magazines and you can cut a deal with it. Loved their boiled dumpling/wontons and crab rangoons. Their egg roll is pretty good too. Our all time favorite is the general tso chicken, mongolian chicken and their fried rice is pretty neat too. This is definitely the best in the area. We were so excited that there was an Enlai in Shorewood because the one in New Lenox is so wonderful. Well this one is on the other end of the spectrum. Food is just okay and the service is the worst I have ever seen in any restaurant. They don't even honor what is on the menu. If an item says it comes with rice, you might want to verify when you place your order or you will find yourself without any. We were also told that they do not make some of the items on the menu. After multiple messed up orders, we will never order from them again. read more

It's ok. Egg roll is not vey good. Had sweet and sour chicken. It was ok, but no green peppers and no pineapple. Had to pour on the sweet and sour sauce myself out of a bowl. Tea is no good.
