The pricing for an 8-week course (2hr session) seems pretty reasonable compared to other language schools - it's not the cheapest, but it's not super expensive. I really appreciated the school's administrator's quick responses to all of my questions prior to registering for my course. The school's website provides VERY detailed information about registering for courses, refunds, time commitments, etc. My professor (Rossy) is amazing and very patient in helping her class reach its language goals. LOL, I think she has a worksheet/example for EVERY possible linguistic situation. I do appreciate the small class size, which gives all students a chance to have a more personal experience. Actually, I was quite shocked (in a good way) that a couple other students have been working with Rossy for over five years. Although most of the courses are virtual (I could be wrong about this), I wish that there were some in-person courses/options especially for the weekend sessions. However, I understand that times are changing, and we as a society are moving to a more virtual world. Perhaps, this is outside of ISL's responsibility, but I wouldn't mind the incorporation of at least one in-person event/experience within course. However, I guess arranging an in-person event/excursion could be left to the discretion of the the course's professor and/or the students. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend ISL.

Here is what I really like about Spanish Blackbelt: The classes are casual; we meet at the local Starbuck's that is very close to my house. The class is small; there are only two of us. There is homework and it can be challenging. There is a strong focus on grammar and spelling. It can be daunting at times, but it is all online and it is very well organized with lots of visual aids. The teacher, Alejandro, is great. He is charming and warm and very encouraging. We speak only Spanish during the class and I've never been made to feel awkward about my rather clumsy skills. I'm only half-way through the Yellow level and have decided to continue to the next level. I truly wish I could wake up one morning and simply know how to speak Spanish. But, I think Spanish Blackbelt might be the next best way to become a Spanish speaker.

From a volunteer perspective, the Center provides so much support and training for its teachers (who do not need to be professional teachers, so this helps), including a ready-made curriculum and textbooks. Though I've been an ESL tutor in the past, having this institutional support was important for me as I wanted to be well-prepared for my students. The teaching set-up also requires each class to be taught by two teachers, which is very helpful! The students come from all around the world and have many different reasons for being in the program. I loved laughing with them, learning from them (as well as my co-teachers!!), and even learning a few things about the English language myself.

COVID protocols are also not followed, as teachers don't wear masks in an attempt to overcome technology issues.

The workbook that Marks Education has created is so helpful and full of all the information you need for the test. Incredibly well thought out! He also gave me actual ACT and SATs to give me practice so that when I walked into the test I knew what to expect. He also had awesome packets and review materials, as well as previous AP tests to help me prepare for the AP tests I took Ryan gave me confidence in an area that is hard to feel confident about. He always motivated me, and knew how to help me in areas that I was struggling in. Called the office to explain exactly the driving skills we wanted the instructor to focus on and asked them to note that with the instructor. We arrived early at the Bethesda office. Office was closed with a sign saying their instructors will meet you there if you have a scheduled lesson. When the lesson time came and went, I called the first posted phone number, which was out of service. Not a good sign. The second number was answered, and we were then contacted by the instructor who had parked on the street outside -- the first of multiple communication issues. The instructor had no idea why we had scheduled a lesson. Compared to "the competition" in our area (the one with ex-cops, which we previously used), the instructor was unfriendly and unwelcoming --- not a good thing with a new, un-confident driver. After the lesson, my daughter told me that the instructor hardly gave her feedback while she was driving, gave her turn and other directions at the last second, and told her to slow down instead of speeding up to be closer to highway speed when she was merging onto the highway. When she first entered the car, the instructor was playing loud talk-radio. When my daughter asked if he could turn it off (at least she had the sense not to be playing talk-radio during a driving lesson); he turned it down, not off, until she asked again. I don't expect miracles from a driving school, but we know from experience that Habesha's service and professionalism was far below the competition.
