Returned 2/18/25 - large portions, chicken fried well, but very greasy egg rolls and lame fried rice. Tons of food - enough for at least 2 meals - but not the highest quality this time on a Tuesday night. The almond chicken was pretty great - fried crispy with a decent gravy/sauce. However, the egg rolls were so greasy, I couldn't eat them. Like, there was oil in the bottom of the bag they came in. Honestly, they didn't taste that fresh either - like they might have refried egg rolls from the day before. Of course on a night when I ordered extra. The fried rice is also pretty lame - plain white rice turned around in a wok with oil. No veggies at all, not even the basic frozen ones. I think I'm on the hunt for a new Chinese place. Very disappointed We have ordered Egg Fo Young and fried rice couple weeks ago and it was delicious. Tonight we ordered Sesame chicken and it was awful. The chicken tasted like it was left over. It was dry with thick breading and the rice was dry also. The egg roll breading was wet inside. I called to ask for a credit for another order. She offered me $3.00. We spent $35. Ordered from Empress Garden on Friday night, almond fried chicken, fried rice, stir fry broccoli, and egg rolls. I instantly got sick and my daughter a couple hours later and through the night. This is a terrible experience. I spent $35. The shrimp fried rice didn't have any shrimp top it off. I ate my dinner at five. Woke up at nine throwing up. I'm Providence Hospital right now with food poisoning. Don't go there. This was on Christmas Eve....... i'm in the hospital overnight because of their nasty food don't go there. To use a cliche, this place is a hidden gem! Situated inside a hallway in the corner of a strip mall, it is easy to miss. Once inside, you'll be pleasantly surprised! reminiscent of the old time "Chop Suey" houses scattered around Detroit in the 60s. Clean as a whistle and they even have a small bar in the back. They are short-staffed, so you must order and pre-pay at the front desk. They give you a number like at a cafeteria, but don't be put off by this odd start. My son and I grabbed a booth and split an order of fried dumplings while we waited for our luncheon combinations, his was the General Tsao's Chicken, mine was the Szechuan Chicken. My family has enjoyed this restaurant for over 40 years and it never disappoints. I have tried almost everything on the menu and it's all delicious. They cook all the proteins to perfection: pork, beef, shrimp, chicken, etc... I love the Singapore Noodles, which has shrimp and chicken in angel hair pasta and curry. Beef with Pea Pods in another favorite dish. The beef is very tender and the sauce is delicious. Their fried rice dishes are a delight. I like the Yong Chow fried rice because it has chicken, ham and shrimp in it. I always get an egg roll--crispy of the outside and yummy on the inside. Vegetarian options too. They also offer dinner and lunch specials. Very friendly service. They have a dining room but it's currently closed due to Covid. Carry out only. I'm so glad they have remained open, continuing to provide excellent service and food during the pandemic. Easy pick up window and customers are requested to wear masks. I'll start by saying the restaurant is nice on the inside. Traditional Chinese restaurant interior. Service was horrible. Said my carry out would be ready in 15 mins but turns out 50 mins. The food was a complete rip off. They said they would serve in quarts but gave smaller servings. I even went back and told them but they didn't correct my order. 4 of us tried the food and we all agree. The flavor was lacking. The sesame chicken didn't taste like normal sesame chicken - tasted like frozen food. Same for the sweet n sour. The lo mein had an after taste that was off putting. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant near home. I always order the shrimp egg foo young with beef-fried rice, and a spring roll. I'm always satisfied. The food is always fresh, the service is quick, and the restaurant isn't too crowded. I like that once you sit down, you can choose from plenty of appetizers, and the food comes out shortly after you're done with your starters. The soda is straight from the can, so don't expect any fountain drinks. It's slightly higher pricing for local Chinese dining, but it's worth it (in my opinion). read more

We weren't expecting much based on the reviews but we were craving chinese and there wasn't much around us as we were from out of town. The restaurant is nicely decorated. They were not crowded (only one other table with 2 customers) so we were able to be seated immediately. The young male server took our order (drink and food). We ordered a glass of wine, water, veggie spring rolls and a veggie dish each. The rolls came quickly and were pretty good. The dishes arrived soon after and my dish was great. In fact, it was probably the best fried tofu I have ever had. The brown sauce gave the tofu and veggies a wonderful flavor. My husband enjoyed his dish with white garlic sauce and veggies with white rice. There was enough for us to take back to the hotel and have for another night, which was even better. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the service was not great. After taking our order, we didn't see our server again until we asked for to go boxes and our check. Our meals were brought out by someone else from the kitchen. We didn't receive a refill of water or asked if we wanted another glass of wine. I actually had to flag him down to get the boxes and check. Other than that, we would certainly go back or get take out. read more

I have to say I'm very disappointed with my experience at Empress Gardens yesterday. When working for Channel 7 back in the late 70s, early 80s, Empress Gardens was their go to because the food was fresh and delicious, but then I moved away. While in Southfield yesterday, I decided to place an order for "Shrimp and Broccoli" and "Almond Chicken". The lady (or child) answering the phone was not only abrupt, but she hung up on me before I could ask how long it would take. Now, I'm a forgiving person and would have overlooked this had they been extremely busy, but when I arrived there was absolutely no one there - the place was empty. After spending over $35, we then discovered the food was horrible! The egg rolls, although they had bean sprouts, tasted like cabbage and didn't taste fresh. The fried rice was old as if it had been sitting for a day or two. I even tried to reheat it, to no avail. Although the almond chicken was plentiful, it was thick and tough, the gravy was watered down, and the broccoli was mushy. I've always loved Chinese food, but stayed away after some of the rumors started circulating. But after this experience, I won't be returning and will just start cooking my favorite Chinese recipes myself. read more
