I've never been to a Buc-ee's, but my family and friends have ranted and raved about the jumbo beaver-inspired travel centers for several years. With that being said, I immediately made a strong correlation between Buc-ee's and The Texan. After a long swim in the hotel pool, my daughters and I reviewed the dinner offerings in the sleepy town. I suggested we just go check out The Texan and at least restock on fluids and snacks for our upcoming beach trip. As soon as we walked in, we all gravitated to the grab-n-go section. Cold items included salads, sandwiches, fruit and veggie cups, boiled eggs, pies, and other desserts. Then we drifted towards the hot items: pizza, tacos, burgers, and other plates, but I was curious about the BBQ sliced brisket sandwich ($9.99). It was so good! Not soggy. Loads of brisket! They also had donuts, kolaches, and muffins in another display. Here's the rest of our supper menu: + sweet tea drinks (medium) = $1.69 + sweet tea (large) = $1.79 + Nutty Bavarian dessert in a cup = $4.49 + 3-piece cake balls cup = $6.99 + grilled chicken sandwich = $8.99 + 5-pc jalapeno poppers = $5.99 + a large meat lover's pizza slice = $3.99 + pecans Great service. Restrooms, a beer cave, wine selections, souvenirs, indoor dining area, and gas/diesel pumps also available. Big rigs have their own area. The only bummer was they sold out of these really cool dog stickers with the Texas flag.

The food options were plentiful but the chopped beef sandwich and fries that I got were a bit disappointing; the fries were once crispy some hours ago but became a soggy lump of sadness once trapped in its plastic container in a hot box. The buns in the sandwich were also smushed/soggy beyond repair with moisture and residual pickle juice; the disadvantages of lower food turnover definitely affects the freshness of the product a bit. They still have a good selection of chips, drinks, and merch so it's a step above the usual run of the mill stop.

Or not but whoever she is, she's wonderful. We got ice cream, fudge, and truffles! All so good my pregnant heart was content. She was so gracious with samples and understood that sometimes when you're pregnant you think you want something and then it's awful. She even wanted to ensure that I sampled some of the fudged before committing. So kind! And not to mention she read the ingredients of the fudges and truffles to me so I could ensure I wouldn't get any I was allergic to. Extra mile points. The ice cream is Bluebell and the variety of flavors they have are GREAT! You can simply check the Bluebell site for which ones are gluten free which I did. We're heading back over from Port A, yes that's how great the service is in comparison to places on the island, to come here again.

Pulling up into the parking lot, we got extremely lucky and saw a few people walking out; otherwise this little parking lot is completely full. The shop itself is also pretty small, basically a hallway down the entire unit, with a bar on the left and a row of small tables on the right. There is some outdoor seating available as well. We ordered lunch to-go, which was pretty quick and easy, as our order was already prepared when I arrived and I was able to use Apple Pay. I noticed their packaging was very nice. We ordered the Philly Cheese w/ pasta salad, the Teriyaki Salmon w/ mac 'n cheese, and also Ahi Tuna sandwich w/ the soup of the day, being broccoli and cheese. My Philly Cheese was tasty, but on the salty side. My bride absolutely loved her Ahi Tuna and the kiddos enjoyed their Teriyaki Salmon. Overall, the food was excellent (but it is pretty pricey). We definitely recommend this spot in you are in the area.

It's the kind of place folks drift into and, before long, start calling their own. The people there carry themselves with quiet pride--no fuss, no show--just a steady hand at their work and a genuine welcome for whoever steps through the door. The menu ain't thrown together. It's been shaped with care, like a well-tuned string on a guitarra, each choice meant to stand on its own but better still when taken together. The flavors come through bold and honest, with a little flourish here and there--nothing overdone, just enough to remind you somebody back there knows what they're about. It's a small spot, sure, but that only draws folks closer. Feels a bit like gathering under a shaded porch after a long day--easy talk, shared laughter, and the sense you're among friends, whether you've known 'em years or just met 'em. Every greeting carries the warmth of old ties, like you've been welcomed back rather than simply let in. And the food--well, it doesn't hold back. Each bite's got a richness that settles in and makes you slow down, take notice, and then go back for more. It's the kind of meal that stays with you, the way a good story does. Spend a little time there with friends, and you'll come away knowing you've found something true--a place where the spirit of San Antonio, with its charro heart and neighborly ways, lives on in every plate set down and every hand extended in welcome.

So, when co-workers wanted to go yesterday, I jumped on it. Don't get me wrong. I love the vibe of this place. I LOVE their story. It's very NY/Northeastern deli feel (they're from Pittsburgh, but you get my drift, right!?). No nonsense. Small inside area. No tables inside. Just enough room to look at the menu, order, and go wait outside. I opted for the chicken bacon ranch on hoagie. What came out was a decent size sandwich, but incredibly messy and soggy. There was so much juice/ liquid the sandwich quickly became unmanageable and just disintegrated. Look, if you're going to serve a sandwich that messy, please upgrade your napkins. It was a one bite - two napkin ratio. The sandwich was good, but the mess and difficulty eating it just took away any enjoyment. Additionally, the flies outside rivaled the worst I've experienced. Do you remember the scene in the Lost World, Jurassic Park movie when the hunters found the Rex nest!? Okay, okay, maybe not that bad, but it was a lot. Hang some fly bags or strips or somethin'. Found price to be a little high. By the time I bought chips and a drink, plus tip: $22. Just FYI: my co-worker disagrees. He thought it was the BEST SANDWICH HE'D EVER HAD. So, yes, go give them a try, but bring a beach towel for clean up.
