I've never been to a Buc-ee's, but my family and friends have ranted and raved about the jumbo beaver-inspired travel centers for several years. With that being said, I immediately made a strong correlation between Buc-ee's and The Texan. After a long swim in the hotel pool, my daughters and I reviewed the dinner offerings in the sleepy town. I suggested we just go check out The Texan and at least restock on fluids and snacks for our upcoming beach trip. As soon as we walked in, we all gravitated to the grab-n-go section. Cold items included salads, sandwiches, fruit and veggie cups, boiled eggs, pies, and other desserts. Then we drifted towards the hot items: pizza, tacos, burgers, and other plates, but I was curious about the BBQ sliced brisket sandwich ($9.99). It was so good! Not soggy. Loads of brisket! They also had donuts, kolaches, and muffins in another display. Here's the rest of our supper menu: + sweet tea drinks (medium) = $1.69 + sweet tea (large) = $1.79 + Nutty Bavarian dessert in a cup = $4.49 + 3-piece cake balls cup = $6.99 + grilled chicken sandwich = $8.99 + 5-pc jalapeno poppers = $5.99 + a large meat lover's pizza slice = $3.99 + pecans Great service. Restrooms, a beer cave, wine selections, souvenirs, indoor dining area, and gas/diesel pumps also available. Big rigs have their own area. The only bummer was they sold out of these really cool dog stickers with the Texas flag.

The food options were plentiful but the chopped beef sandwich and fries that I got were a bit disappointing; the fries were once crispy some hours ago but became a soggy lump of sadness once trapped in its plastic container in a hot box. The buns in the sandwich were also smushed/soggy beyond repair with moisture and residual pickle juice; the disadvantages of lower food turnover definitely affects the freshness of the product a bit. They still have a good selection of chips, drinks, and merch so it's a step above the usual run of the mill stop.

Or not but whoever she is, she's wonderful. We got ice cream, fudge, and truffles! All so good my pregnant heart was content. She was so gracious with samples and understood that sometimes when you're pregnant you think you want something and then it's awful. She even wanted to ensure that I sampled some of the fudged before committing. So kind! And not to mention she read the ingredients of the fudges and truffles to me so I could ensure I wouldn't get any I was allergic to. Extra mile points. The ice cream is Bluebell and the variety of flavors they have are GREAT! You can simply check the Bluebell site for which ones are gluten free which I did. We're heading back over from Port A, yes that's how great the service is in comparison to places on the island, to come here again.

Not unusual for many of the businesses nearby, but fighting for a spot in the end may not be worth it. It seems the place is mostly attuned to locals. Light on any kind of greetings, you place your order inside and they'll bring it to you wherever you are sitting. The food came out in an appropriate time and after that, don't expect to see anyone again as it is largely self service with condiments, napkins, etc. available on a nearby cart where you also will leave your baskets at the end of the meal. The food itself was only ok. We ordered the happy hour mozzarella and marinara dippers (dear readers, this is simply a single grilled cheese cut into four triangles. Delicious! And only $4, but the wording on that could maybe have been better...) the chicken salad sandwich with potato salad, and the shrimp tacos. The chicken salad errs on the sweet side, which the brioche bun only adds to, and was in much need of a hot sauce which I did add but still wasn't the largest fan. The potato salad was really good, but the indication on the menu that it was spicy was misplaced - it is yellow, sure, but not spicy. As for the shrimp tacos, again not fantastic but the shrimp was cooked quite perfectly. The combination of ups and downs put this smack in the middle for me. We had planned to stay for a few drinks, but decided to hop to a few other local businesses to see if we could find a better vibe. Overall, I would say this is a good spot to feed kids quickly and on the cheap(ish) and maybe hang and chat with friends.
