I picked Empowerhouse Acting Studio after watching testimonials from alumni about the Owner/Acting Teacher, Melissa Thompson Esaia. The common thread I heard in all these testimonials was that Melissa was a passionate and committed teacher who understood how to balance teaching, compassion, and accountability. Having worked with her for almost 2.5 years now I can say she does this better than any teacher/leader I have ever worked with. In doing so, she has created a safe learning environment at Empowerhouse AND an expectation for excellence. It is not an easy task to do both! Not only has finishing my Meisner Technique and business training empowered me to call myself an actor, but I feel like I am a better person who has more confidence in who I am. Additionally, the Empowerhouse community has become like a family. I have been supported and helped by Empowerhouse alumni both in the Bay area and in LA. The group I finished the training with (see the photo) are truly family to me. Becoming a member of the Empowerhouse community and being taught by Melissa has been a life-changing experience!!! I would recommend this studio to anyone who wants to learn the craft of acting in a supportive, nurturing environment with the most amazing teacher!

Very highly recommended! You'll graduate from this training program with such a robust toolbelt of skills, which you'll be so grateful to have cultivated. Taking this Meisner training at Empowerhouse Acting Studio is truly foundational and transformational. Rest assured that you will learn how to become a professional working actor with earned confidence in your skills. Melissa is such a gem and she named her school aptly. She genuinely empowers you to be the best authentic actor you can be. Not all Meisner schools are equal, fyi, and it took me an extra 45 minutes to commute to Empowerhouse compared to the other Meisner school in SF, but the extra drive was SO worth it you have no idea. I really can't give enough praise to Melissa and her magical Empowerhouse Acting Studio. What a beautiful experience it has been. I will miss it dearly!

I just completed my two year Meisner training program at Empowerhouse this week and can't believe how far I've come, all thanks to Melissa. She didn't just teach me to be a better actor and the true craft of acting, but also to step into myself, trust myself, and to feel confident in my own skin in all aspects of my life. It all went by so quickly and was such a life changing experience! Melissa is not only an incredibly kind and talented human being, but she's 100% dedicated and skilled in what she does. There's nobody else like her! I've never seen someone care so deeply for each and every one of their students the way Melissa does. You can really feel how much she believes in her students and wants to give them all the necessary tools to succeed. She will help and guide you every step of the way in the loving and safe space she's created that is Empowerhouse. She will also expect the utmost level of professionalism from all of her students in her classroom, which I greatly appreciate and admire. I can't thank her enough for everything she's done for me. Love you Melissa!

I've danced for Mahea for 7 years. She is a brilliant teacher, a lover of music, dance, cultural history of Hawai'i and Tahiti. She is respectful, tactful, patient, kind, sincere and wonderful. She is the owner of the center for international dance. She made me fall in love dancing hula kahiko and hula auana. She taught me how to dance gracefully and be gracious. She hosts the most intricate and fun workshops on how to braid a haku lei, decorate costumes, and even, hosted a few workshops for meditation. She may come off very stern but she only expects the best from her dancers. She may seem trivial at times but she is a perfectionist. I love her like she was a part of my family. I've competed with the halau at Tahiti Fete San Jose, performed at numerous Ho'ike Pau Hana shows. If I didn't move out of the East Bay, I would still be dancing for her.

However, when she moved into the pre-professional program, she was loads happier. We've loved each of the teachers she has worked with so far. The class sizes are small, and the kids get the individual attention they need. The teachers are kind and seem to truly love nurturing young ballet students. The two performances (nutcracker and spring recital) are lovely, and really show the skills they've been working on. My daughter looks forward to her classes each week, and genuinely enjoys what she's learning. She's developed really nice friendships with her classmates as well, which is great. The only thing that concerns me a little is the fact that the studio has moved away from stage performances, and all performances take place in the small studio theater. I do think it is important that young people have the opportunity to perform on an actual stage with set pieces and such, in front of an audience beyond their families. I am hoping this aspect will return to the program once things stabilize (we are still in post-pandemic mode in a lot of ways!) and there's funding to support this again. That being said, the performances that happen at the studio are quite beautiful in their simplicity, and the dancers are obviously proud of their work, and enjoy their time on stage.
