Besides receiving the nastiest looks on the planet, no one said so much as a hello nor introduced themselves. Acknowledged my children? Not a chance. Okay, a smile for the birthday girl? You guessed it. At this point I'm so uncomfortable, I offer to help set up to perhaps shift the energy. They deferred. We enter the gym and thankfully the kids were able to enjoy because as I said above, the facility is very nice. The staff members softened after my mother said something because frankly, it was upsetting. If you're a parent, you know birthdays are a huge milestone so a little kindness goes a long way in making the day special. Admittedly, I am probably too laid back and should have something but I was too stunned by their behavior. Forget the extra special touches that literally every other facility does such as music preferences of the birthday child, I didn't even want to interact because they were so unfriendly and wildly unapproachable. Party ends and you better believe they were vacuuming and spraying tables by the literal minute the party ended. My kids see their cousins about twice a year and I couldn't even enjoy the moment because I felt the eyes glaring for us to leave. I am imploring you to take your hard earned money elsewhere. I will gladly host your child's party myself to save you the experience we had. Never in my life have I experienced staff this rude in my 40 years of existence. What a heartbreak.

One time she was assigned to a balance beam that was too big for her to mount. No one noticed, and she just stood there watching the other kids practice on the beams. Another time there was a substitute coach who had her try something that was way too advanced, and she fell. At that point we were done.

The girls run laps around the dance floor and then stretch barefoot on carpeting that looks like it hasn't been shampooed in a decade. After having a friendly exchange with Alex over email about having my daughter join a comp class and asking if it was ok for a three year old to try it, we were gobsmacked by the rudest head teacher leading the class. Granted, our child doesn't acclimate well or easily to new experiences and was clingy for the first 20 minutes, but she started to warm up a bit and followed the class with help from me. How is it then that the lead teacher zones in us and says very rudely and with a thick scowl, "Your child is too young, she is not ready!" Any normal parent takes this as a cue to leave so I led my kid to the parent area and began putting on her shoes. Lo and behold the lead teacher actually followed us and began to scold me! She says, "Why did you leave the class?!" Hey Lady! I am almost 40 years old. This isn't the movie, "An Officer and Gentleman". You're not the Russian version of Louis Gossett, Jr. And I'm not Richard Gere. You're not here to break me or my daughter down in order to gain some sick satisfaction of having us beg to stay. So I yelled back and said, "You said she's not ready, so why should we stay?!" And that yes, I agree she's too young but I've never experienced such a rude approach from a teacher talking to a prospective student. The teacher shakes her head at me and says she's never had a parent talk to her like that and that "I'm not her (kind of) parent." Well good! I'm not paying my hard earned cash for an unfriendly, military-like extracurricular environment. Really, What adult talks to another adult like that? This odd "tough love" "destroy your confidence" approach is as archaic as the building that houses this gymnastics class. Completely ridiculous. Anyone reading this - stay far, far, far away. I recommend Nina's Gymnastics in Maspeth where the teachers are NORMAL and it's in a legit studio/gym facility.

The water quality and temperature have been maintained very well at most of the times. If they occasionally fall short, the management would adjust soon as they get emails or verbal messages from members. Yes, I have to admit we are a bunch of pool snubs. Lol! Most people who workout here only do so because they have personal trainers that are affiliated with their gym. The personal trainers here are excellent but there is a price to pay for excellence. Their workout classes are awesome but super expensive to pay per class is $20.00 and to pay for unlimited classes a year it in the thousands. The only reason I was able to experience this gym is because I used to get reimbursed by my former employee. The clientele are mostly stay at home moms who can really afford to do what they please. I can only hope that one day I will be there working out again haha :)

I'm a big fan of the JCC--the facility is great, the crowd is vibrant and diverse, there's great…read moreprograms, and the staff is smart and genuinely helpful. So why only four stars? I joined to swim, and the pool itself is excellent. The problem is what happens right before people get in: no one showers. I've seen people go straight from the basketball court, still schvitzing, into the jacuzzi (ew!). I've even seen lifeguards hop in without rinsing off. When even the referees aren't following the rules, as stated on the sign there, it's not a great sign. All this isn't exactly appetizing. I've lived abroad and traveled quite a bit, and there's a cultural aspect to this. In France, skipping the pre-swim shower is unthinkable. In Iceland, someone actually supervises your scrub-down before you're allowed into the hot pots. In Mexico City, where I swim in a private gym akin to the JCC, it's definitely enforced. In Japan--forget about it. I've raised this three times with Steve Miller, the director of health and wellness. His view is that they add enough chlorine to kill the germs and that people should know better, but there's no real way to enforce it--lifeguards need to watch the pool, not police showering. (Though they do other distracted things like testing the water.) His proposed solution has been new signage--but who knows when? And I'm skeptical a sign will succeed where social norms have failed. It comes down to education. Most people in the pool where caps, for instance. Why? That's what they were told. So, why not tell them to shower? It's simply a matter of priorities, which this doesn't seem to be. Maybe I'm the only one who cares--based on the evidence, that might be true. But for a place that does so many things right, this one issue, for me, is hard to ignore.
