I don't have pictures of the two loaves that I bought on a whim just before they closed, but I can say that I would travel the 3 hours back to buy more. The cranberry, walnut bread was beautiful baked and every bite was the perfect ratio of cranberries to walnuts. I also purchased a flat of focaccia with feta and olives. It was so good with olive oil and with some dipping marinara sauce. If I lived closer, I'd buy all my baked goods from them! I found a picture!!! This is why I should review and post within 24 hours. Best Sourdough bread on the West Coast. I grew up in San Francisco California in the 50s 60s until I received my draft card and went into the Army. My grandmother owned and operated a restaurant in San Francisco from the 1930s to the early 1970s. I ate Sourdough bread every day while growing up. Almost all of the sourdough bread bakers in San Francisco are gone now. I never thought I would ever taste GREAT sourdough again; then I tasted Empire Bakery's sourdough. I am now a regular customer and if YOU like REAL sourdough bread you must get your mouth around Empire Bakery's sourdough. I really enjoy bread. Like a lot. I stopped by Empire Bakery with my SO and wanted to just check out the offerings. There didn't seem to be a menu posted anywhere! There is, however, a metal rolling shelf, full of focaccia. Since it was our first time there, I asked if anything was dairy and egg free. The man who was at the cash register was judging me heavily and kind of off-putting. The people standing in the back also stared at me in an uncomfortable way as well. But whatever... I was there for the bread. Turns out, there is just one focaccia bread they make that is both those things: the rosemary and sea salt focaccia. It was so good. The bread was fluffy, airy, tasty, delectable!! My SO got the olive and feta focaccia which he loved. And he's not really a bread person. When we were leaving, I heard the woman behind me in line ask for a cranberry walnut bread, which they didn't have on display and was never mentioned by the cashier. There was also a fridge that had some take-and-bake items and maybe day old items? Anyways, get the focaccia for sure. The other stuff I can't vouch for. read more

The rosemary sourdough had the perfect balance of sour, tender crumb, and chew. The aroma alone of that loaf takes you to a happy place. Their jalapeño and mozzarella focaccia is best reheated for a few minutes in a hot oven, split horizontally, and stuffed with your favorite sandwich fillings. We were looking for a bakery that makes rye bread with caraway seeds. We stopped in here several times looking for rye and were told that it was only made once a week. After several attempts we were finally told that the only rye that they made was a sourdough rye. According to my husband it was TASTELESS. I thought that the bread had a weird flavor and did not taste like rye or sourdough. If I could give this place zero stars I would have done so. read more

Came here after a yelp search and reading reviews in search of some good bread for sandwiches and clam chowder. This place didn't have good bread, it had AMAZING bread! The bakery itself smelled so good when walking in and they were right there making bread. Purchased the roasted garlic sourdough, it had so much flavor and was so soft. The price was comparable to grocery store bread and this is fresh baked. My only disappointment was that I didn't buy more and pick up some of the other types of bread they make. Tuesday cannot come quick enough so I can pick up some more. read more

I just wish I lived closer to this bakery and their hours were longer. Best bread and baked goods in town. I highly recommend the focaccia bread but all their bread is incredible. I don't know if they still make ravioli anymore but those were SUPER good. They use to have a restaurant/wine bar and it was my favorite place in town to eat (hands down). Best French onion soup EVER. I found out not long ago that you can often purchase loaves of their bread in Charleston at Chucks seafood. Just a tip in case you get to the bakery and they are closed. I was born and raised in the Coos Bay/North Bend area. I can honestly say after decades it is still difficult to find cuisine that I consider worth writing about. Left a long time ago and have been fortunate enough to enjoy cuisine in the finest of restaurants. I have family in this area and visit often. I was hesitant when one suggested I try the focaccia bread in this small bakery in Empire. It is fabulous-Italian perfection- i haven't tried anything else there but when I hit town I'm ordering a half a sheet of it! We got some pastries here this morning; a pain au chocolat and a cheese and berry danish. Both were delicious. I inhaled the pain au chocolat while standing at the counter, it was that good. Four sticks of good quality chocolate, which was still a bit melty from the oven, and a super crisp and flakey outside. Stumbled upon this hidden gem while picking up dinner around the corner. We kept eyeing the store while waiting for our food and decided what the heck, let's go check it out. We had come at the end of the day so after reading all these reviews I was a bit bummed we missed all the good stuff. However, we did pick up a loaf of sourdough and a right-out-of-the-oven baguette - OMG, to die for!! The baguette didn't last long - ate the ends as soon as we got home. We decided to go back the next day to pick up some to bring back to Cali and found out they were closed - so bummed. Until we're in Coos Bay again...we will have to wait. read more

Execution, Execution, Execution it makes a world of difference. Brought home a loaf of Sourdough bread. Why would you put a loaf of warm bread in a plastic bag?? The loaf was wet, spongy and light weight. The flavor of tartness was there but what happened to a nice crusty outside? It wasn't there. Peanut butter cookies under cooked grainy chew the sugar wasn't incorporated.The flavor was there but texture so lacking. Hidden local's spots are always the best. If Empire Bakery in Coos Bay were on "5th Ave." there'd be a line around the block!! My wife and I discovered this treasure a couple of years ago and we refuse to buy our baked goods anywhere else even though it's a 40 minute drive for us. I'm serious! The bread is to die for. We have never tasted such delicious sour dough bread and the cranberry-walnut is crazy delicious!! Chocolate chip walnut cookies from Heaven! If I won the lottery I'd finance this family bakery so the rest of the world could experience this fantastic food. Stopped by while exploring town on foot and found the gentlemen working to be very friendly. Sampled some of the bread, which was fresh and delicious. Upon completing my venturing around town I returned to purchase some of their cheesecake (Oregon Berry). I returned to the hotel and shared the half cheesecake with the rest of the family. Everyone (all adults) held a high opinion of the delicious dessert. I am by no means a dessert expert, however, this was the best cheesecake that I had sampled in my adult life. It was not overpowering, very smooth as opposed to most being very rich and overly sweet. I enjoy pastries and will visit them in the morning on our next trip to try them out. Thank you to the staff for making a tourist feel like a part of the community. In conclusion; the staff is friendly, pricing seems competitive and the food was delicious. On a side note, if you like sushi, they highly recommended the Tokyo Bistro around the corner. read more

Gotta love those hole in the wall places that turn out to be fantastic. Would have never found this place if not for a friends recommendation, but I'm so happy I did. Stepped out of the rain and into the delicious smell of the roasted garlic loaf being pulled out of the oven. It was heavenly. They are a tiny little space but they have a lot of variety. Bread, wine, cheeses baked goods, coffee, frozen house made pasta, pizza & more bread to take home for later. I visited on a rainy day but there was a small outdoor seating area that would probably be nice in better weather. I was really impressed with this little spot. I ended up with a Rosemary salted focaccia that melt in my mouth. And a Rosemary loaf sliced for sandwiches later that was also good. Happy to have found this place.
