It had been a few years since I'd first been here at Empanada Lady. I thought the empanadas were good then, and they still are! This is a cozy place right off of Bloomfield Avenue in Verona. There's a parking lot in front and plenty of seating inside. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken with Gorgonzola cheese empanada. The empanada has a great crispness and is stuffed inside with great flavors. Dipped in the sauce, it was outstanding. They have their own bottles of iced tea here which was very good. I'm sad to give this place two stars when it used to be so good. I used to come here all the time before I started Yelp Elite and three cheese empanada was delicious. This last time the three cheese empanada had only one bland cheese and completely lacked flavor. I tried the pizza empanada, but the pizza sauce had an off flavor and didn't add to the overall flavor. We tried the Dubai chocolate empanada which we were very excited about, but were completely disappointed. The inside and outside were bone dry and it completely lacked flavor besides the chocolate bits. To add insult to injury, for four regular empanadas and one desert empanada it was $35 without tip. They have certainly increase their prices but decreased the quality of their food. Service was good and the ambiance is cute but the food was such a let down. My favs include spinach and feta, kale and plantain, BBQ pork, chicken and potato, but all are very good. This week my hubby and I tried the Tuesday pork special w 3 sides and I finally tried the Cubano. Very good. Pay cash and she reduces credit card surcharge. Dinner and lunch! Went to a food truck fair and tried the Empanadas. Fully enjoyed them so the next day we decided to head to the cafe. As we approached we weren't even sure the cafe was opened. But it was, a nice family style ambiance, like Grandma's kitchen. There was only one customer and the workers appeared to be struggling to complete the transaction of her order. So we were patient, but no one acknowledged us, and it got to the point where even the customer stepped to the side and insisted they take care of us. The workers continued to ignore us, so we just simply left. Won't return to the cafe just based off customer service or lack thereof. We come across the truck again we'll indulge. read more

The Empanada Lady was in my neighborhood so I decided give them a try. I ordered a Chipotle BBQ Chicken & Cheddar, Pulled Pork and Spinach Feta empanada. The empanadas have the initials set in the dough so you know which one you are eating. The dough was crunchy and tasted home made. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed because these empanadas had NO Latin flavor as advertised and were way too expensive. The 3 were $15!! Let's start with the chicken. The chicken wasn't shredded well. I bit into ligament and fat which wasn't pleasant. It wasn't seasoned and tasted like bbq sauce and chicken. My empanada didn't have cheddar cheese, a chipotle flavor or salt/pepper. The pulled pork tasted like more like a honey based BBQ sauce without the fundamental spices, salt and pepper. The spinach and feta was also disappointment. It tasted just like frozen spinach and barely had feta. It was bland! I am not interested in trying the Empanada Lady again. Wow what a bad place to get a food. First they are not authentic. I ordered chimi and they gave me an american burger and called it a chimi. I also ordered yuca fries and they gave me regular fries. Tried this for the first time at the Sussex County Music & Food Truck Festival. As a family, we ordered 4 different empanadas - BBQ Mac and Cheese, Buffalo Chicken & 2 Southwestern (chorizo). My favorite was the buffalo chicken as I felt that had the most flavor. The southwest chorizo was also delicious. I wish the BBQ mac and cheese had a bit more flavor/spice then it did. Only other thing was we didn't know which empanada was which until we bit into it so we had to try them all and trade but other then that, would definitely eat again. read more

Came here to buy empanadas for a pot luck based on their reputation stated by others. Place is cute and kept very clean. Bought a dozen (6 chicken and cheese and 6 samosa). My coworkers/ classmates did enjoy them and liked the flavor (especially those that are vegetarian as that's why I got 6 samosa filling). Cost however wasn't appetizing. A dozen cost me $72 ($6 per empanada) when paying with a card. There seems to be a small discount for cash but it didn't seem like much. Very expensive for empanadas. Also labeling wasn't as clear as the employee stated as a samosa was packaged with a chicken and cheese empanada ( I stressed that I would be serving vegetarians) but luckily the vegetarians in my group didn't mind as the dough was only touching and not the fillings. Good food but the service is shocking. We've ordered from here through friends before so being local, we went in to give them business on a random weekday for lunch. We walked in to order, two employees saw us and walked to the back. We waited 20 minutes in the front of the store blatantly ready to order- no service. It's like they didn't want the business? The first time I went I just thought she was having a bad day or was tired of walking back and forth to the table so I let it slide. The next time I went (like a week later) she did the same thing! She needs to fix that ASAP! Another -5 because she doesn't label which empanada is which. The second time I went I ordered about 8 or 9 empanadas, they were put into a tin foil pan with no labeling( I didn't realize this until I got home) so my brother and I literally had to open every empanada to figure out what they were.
